Major Traditions

This is not a complete list and will continue to grow.

  • The tradition held in highest esteem by the Yari people concerning religion is the quiet respect given to anyone religious or marked by an Immortal. The Yari people prefer to keep displays of their religion confined to their houses of worship, their own homes, and confined to their own daily lives. To each their own is the mindset. However, proselytizing, public preaching, or admonishing another person's lifestyles because of your own beliefs, religious or not, will quickly be answered in kind by a dual at minimum.
  • Shrines of all types, for all deities, are tolerated. What this means is that shrines are rarely, if ever, attacked, desecrated, or otherwise damaged. To do so invites harsh, and often swift consequences.
  • All shrines are viewed as public. Even those within a home or on private property. While often considered annoying, it is tolerated. Because of this, shrines are usually placed outside of the home, and most homes don't bother to lock their doors, or even have locks in the first place. That said, usually some sort of gift is given to the owner of the private property the shrine sits within.
  • Shrines on private property are expected to be maintained and kept respectable by the owners of the property. Defunct shrines often come with demands by various worshipers.

Minor Traditions

This is not a complete list and will continue to grow.

  • Whenever something random or unexpected happens, saying "You've taken your payment Aelig, bug off" or "Aelig got his due," or variations.
  • For the Mercenary Companies that lean toward more toward to direct battlefield conflict, there is always an Aelig Touched. This is a soldier whose placement breaks the perfection of the formation, so as to not offend the Immortal.
  • Yari children regularly avoid stepping on people's shadows, for " Audrae is always watching." This is much less common among adults, though not unheard of.
  • Before a Yari leaves the city to travel abroad, they have a special meal with one specific individual. This person is usually of importance to them, and is who they are beholden to upon return, in order to tell the story of their travels, as an honor to Cassion.
  • Saying thanks to Chamadarst after a successful trade of goods or services for money.
  • During the first storm following Dry Season, Yari go en masse to the Crags and stand there during the storm, to experience the blessing and strength of Chrien. Mer swim in the dangerous waters at the base of the Crags. Additionally, Yari go during when they believe is the last storm, to be blessed during the Dry Season. This causes some contention, as the guesses are not always accurate. Those that get it wrong are believed to have wronged Chrien and are the Spited. Those that get it right are believed to be the Storm Touched during the dry season, meaning they might attract the extremely rare storm during that time.
  • Those that are greedy are often referred to as "Being the type to pickpocket the winds themselves" in reference to Delroth.
  • Adulterers that are banished from town receive a double branding on their way out, both upon the face. The first brand, a broken circle, marks them as banished from Yaralon, applied to left cheek. The second brand, a flower blossom, applied to the right cheek, is to brand them as Edasha Touched.
  • When a person is thought to be dead, but brought back or recovered, they spend an entire arc cutting their own skin, anywhere on the body, and drinking their blood, once per trial. This is a large sacrifice to be given to Famula for "resurrecting" them.
  • When entering a bar, tavern, or other alcoholic establishment, a Yari never buys a drink for themselves first. They buy a drink for another person, and will wait to order and drink their own once that drink is done. This is a sacrifice given to Ilaren.
  • Those who have gone 'war crazy' are said to have been seduced by Kata but have not yet consummated. They are given their weapon and clothes, and taken to the Maiden's Refuge, and instructed to seek out Kata, and seduce her. Only this can heal them. None have ever returned from this quest.
  • The phrase "Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice, fuck you Mastes," is commonly used.
  • When a new home is being built, one of the foundation stones is dedicated to Moseke. This 'Moseke Stone' is also recovered if the house is torn down, or house must be rebuilt, and is incorporated into a new Moseke Shrine.
  • Asking "What's Ralaith think?" instead of "What time is it?"
  • Never saying Vri's name aloud.
  • West facing windows are closed prior to dusk, and east facing window opened prior to dawn. This keeps Xiur and predators out, and welcomes light and Ymiden.
