Graceful, lithe and half a head taller than most human women, Jaene could easily be mistaken for a full-blooded Eídisi with her pale turquoise skin and blue hair—wasn’t it for her dark iris and darker pupils. Anything but a vain woman, Jaene favors the practical over the fancy in her style of dress: simple pants, belted tunics and study boots make up her most every day wear.
History Jaene is a former researcher of Viden University, turned independent scholar and blade mind for hire. When not advancing the academic interests of paying clients, she focuses on her own studies and what she cares about most: unravelling the mysteries of the mind and why people do the things they do.
Abandoned at birth by her young Eídisi mother (who out of shame over her ill-judged tryst with a colleague had left Viden to give birth to her during a 'research' trip) Jaene grew up as an orphan in the streets of Korlasir where she learned early to combine human entrepreneurial acumen and the Eídisi lust for knowledge, gathering and compiling information for interested parties—for coin. She was not yet seventeen when she first set foot into Viden, scratching together her tuition fees by doing the drudge work for fellow students and masters alike. Whenever it was procuring rare specimen in the hinterlands or overlooking experiments her patrons didn’t want to dirty their hands with, she would do it as long it was tangent to her own interests or garnered her the resources needed to continue her studies. Against the odds, Jaene made her certificate.
Among her colleagues, Jaene is relatively well know (in certain circles, anyway), if not overly well-liked. In the academic field, where everyone is jealously guarding their finds, her venal and often ruthless attitude is eyed with caution. Although she hasn’t many friends at the university, her reputation as of not only being competent but also reliable and discreet keeps her busy enough with commissions.
In 710 Jaene is approached by a patron showing an interest in the Avriel condition and the time of inner turmoil following their childhoods. She doesn’t ask who hired her. Why they wanted to know. Only how much they were willing to play. Over the next couple of arcs, she turns up and investigates the cases of several young Avriel terrorizing small villages in and around the Hotlands. One case, a failed ransom, is Pharan. Annoyed villagers sell him to her, only to get rid of him. Pharan turns out to be not only a thankful subject for her studies, but, once they came to an understanding, also someone willing to talk about his experience, his perspective. Jaene is the one who teaches him how to get his anger under control, first to test this or that theory, later so they could talk about Jaene’s research.
For four arcs the two of them travel together, working on Jaene’s studies, before she initiates him into Empathy. Although it would be easy to claim she shared her spark because she felt sympathy for someone who like her was only looking to find his place in the world after having been abandoned (and maybe she did feel a vague kinship) – the truth is she initiated him because he was useful.
Personality Level-headed • Secretive • Determined • Inquisitive • Ruthless
Relationship with PharanJaene is Pharan’s past and future mentor. The two of them travelled together for a couple of years before Pharan’s return to Athart. Since his mentor avoids the city they have seen each other only occasionally since. It is mostly when Pharan is traveling that she uses her Attunement to drop in on him, making him help her on this or that odd quest in exchange for small tidbits of information before setting out again.
Their relationship is mostly professional. As an Avriel he can go places Jaene can’t or can’t as easily and has a unique insight into the Avriel psyche which is useful for her ongoing work. In turn, she is a better source for information about Empthy and magic than the magic averse Avriel. He doesn’t know she conducts her studies for someone else.
Mage Mentor Note: Jaene Tuon is the Mage Mentor of Pharan, and is available in Athart. If you wish to share her as a Mage Mentor, contact an Athart mod.
