History

Throughout the history of Idalos, every race and species has had a ‘pecking order’. There are those who are the “most”. In human terms, that might be the most popular, most beautiful, most intelligent, most sporting …. The list goes on.

Then, there are those who are the opposite.

As true as this is for the mortals of Idalos, it is for the animals. The creatures which walk on land, swim in the oceans or fly in the air. There too, there are the misfits, those who do not conform. Yet, among them there are often exemplary and wonderful members. And Saoire saw them, and she took in the weird, the unusual, and the lost of each species. It is well known that the Immortal of Gifts and Mentoring takes in the lost and lonely, that anyone is welcome in her realm. However, over the last many many arcs, some of these creatures have managed to rise above the normal members of the species.

While other Immortals created races, Saoire did not. She simply gave those who she chose, her Cadouri, a Gift. Like many of Saoire’s Gifts, this was an excellent and wonderful thing. Saoire’s gift basically picked up all the strange and the usual and encouraged them to develop until they created their own society. Any creature that had close interaction with a Grand Fracture, that got messed up by magic or overexposure. All the mammals who got mixed with spirits or ended up drifting into the Beneath somehow. Anything that came into contact with any of the very weird things that exist in any of the local cities that have unexplained powers.

Anything that reasonably would have either died out by itself or become some hideous unique monster down the line, she took in and nurtured.

And then they developed. And they mixed. And they interbred, and all sorts of strange things.

This is how Saoire cultivated an entire race of small mammals into a very unique, and utterly bizarre society, that would have every other Immortal (including even Aelig and Syroa) scratching their heads in disbelief. Then, in Zi’da 720 - after a very difficult arc and a time when everyone needed a reason to make them smile - Saoire settled on the island of Scalvoris and, as the Star Turtle landed on the damaged volcano-island of Faldrass, so too were the Cadouri seen more and more in the world of Idalos.

Appearance

The Cadouri are bipedal versions of small mammals. They might be very obviously a single animal (eg:a small talking otter), or a mixture of a few different animals (rabbit / raccoon etc). Tending towards being short, the tallest Cadouri known was six foot tall, most come in at around the 4 foot mark. They vary in build and stature. Tails are commonplace - or as commonplace as anything is for this race.

OOC Note

The Cadouri appearance gives no advantage whatsoever to the player. If they have sharp teeth, that’s fine - but those teeth don’t do more damage. They might look like a very short bipedal cat, they can have cat-ears - but they don’t have cat hearing. If they have wings, they can not naturally fly.

Psychology

Each person within Idalos has their own personality as no person is the same as the next - and the psychology of each Cadouri is influenced by the mammal(s) it represents. This being said, lifestyle and socialization have a lot to do with a person's habits, views, and judgments and, up until this point, Saoire has nurtured them all.

They tend towards playful and often rather naive to the reality of the world. Saoire has nurtured them up to this point and, therefore, they have known only her society. Now that they are branching out over Idalos, they are encountering things which - no doubt - will be new and difficult. Saoire worries for her children, but she knows that for all their good humour and peaceful attitudes, they are strong enough to face the future.

In a general sense, a Cadouri is likely to be enthusiastic and optimistic, sometimes more than might be expected of the situation. They find joy in the smallest things and tend to treat everyone as if they were an old friend. They eat a lot - a very surprising amount for such small creatures and, as a general rule, they are usually kind.

Perception of the World

The Cadouri see the world as a place of wonder and delight. Having been kept largely sheltered by Saoire until Arc 720, they find wonder and delight in things around them.

The downside of this, however, is that they are often not very savvy when it comes to the ways of the world of Idalos. For some of the Cadouri - those most sheltered by Saoire until this point - the world is something of an overwhelming place.

Culture

Food

If there is one thing that all Cadouri agree on, it is that food is very important. Maybe because of the Gift Saoire gave, or perhaps a mere quirk of nature; whatever the reason the Cadouri universally have a large appetite. They enjoy good food, rich food, and the pleasures of something which tastes good. There is no one specific diet for them - even if there is for the animal race they most seem like.

Education

Being Saoire’s children, Cadouri children are schooled from a very young age. The mercantile aspect of their society is built on apprenticeships and they firmly believe that learning - both formal and informal - is a life-long endeavour.

Traditions

Gift giving is a tradition in Cadouri society; it is something which is as commonplace as a greeting. There is no expectation of a gift back and, although they celebrate every single celebration to it’s max, it doesn’t take a holiday or festival for a Cadouri to give a gift. The best gifts, in their minds, are the ones where someone literally sees something and thinks “Oh, that would make a great gift for ….” or makes something specifically for someone else.

Marriage, Courtship, Etc

Cadouri society is generally one of acceptance. As long as you don’t hurt anyone, most anything goes. Therefore, there is no expectation of any particular kind of relationship. Some Cadouri mate for life and have beautiful ceremonies - others have multiple partners at a time and everything in between. Usually, though, if there’s a chance for a party, they’ll take it - and so are as likely to celebrate someone deciding to end a marriage as they are to celebrate starting one.

Trade

Trade is a strange thing in Cadouri society. They will trade for necessities - but not luxuries.

Non-Violence

Saoire’s children practice non-violence and come from a nonviolent society. This does not mean that they won’t fight or learn combat skills, just that their society is not a violent one.

Clothing and Grooming

The clothing and grooming practiced by the Cadouri tends to be highly individualistic. Personal taste and style is encouraged for a number of reasons. Firstly, it means that individual gifts can be made or bought and also, it celebrates the individual and unique nature of each one of them.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and Crafts are treasured in Cadouri society and the greatest gift is one which has been made. The emphasis in terms of arts and crafts, however, is on making things which will bring joy and pleasure to those who it is made for. So, a blanket must be warm, of course, but it should also be beautiful in the eyes of the person receiving it.

Technology, Religion, and Worship

Technology

Although not a hard and fast rule, Cadouri tend to like gadgets. Little gizmos or strange whirligigs are often the order of the day. They are a very diverse society but there are a disproportionately large number of innovators among them.

Religion

As a whole, the Cadouri adore Saoire. She is their saviour and their “creator”. However, individuality is highly prized and they do not follow her without question. They are used to being able to approach her and ask questions, to know what it is that is happening and why. This means that, in the main, they follow her.

Worship

It will be no surprise to anyone that the Cadouri have a lot of religious ceremonies, all of which are basically excuses to eat and have a party. There is no such thing as formal worship or temples - that’s a very silly idea to them. Worship and religion are a way of life to them.

Reproduction, Aging, and Death

Nobody knows why, but reproduction and the process of aging works exactly the same for the Cadouri as it does for humans, although they tend to live a little longer. They can be mixed race, however any child born of the union between a Cadouri and a Naerrik or a Lotharro is never anything but a Cadouri.

Language, Script, and Names

Languages

There is no specific Cadouri language, they speak Common.

Script

There is an appreciation among the Cadouri of penmanship and they tend to practice the art of calligraphy.

Player Notes

The Cadouri have been in existence for hundreds of arcs, however, they are new to Idalos. They have been in Saoire’s Domain until now. To visualise Saoire’s Realm, it is a much larger version of “Saoire’s Dream”, the area of Faldrass where Saoire has settled.

Although this race have been in existence for a long time, they have been sheltered from the other Immortals. Therefore, there are no Mortalborn of this race.

Other than Saoire, the other Immortals have been unaware of this race - therefore, their reaction to the race is, as yet, unknown.

There are no restrictions on magic.

Only PCs created after the 20th of December, 2020 may be this race.
