Magic Mutations Woe

Abrogation

Spark Theme & Persona

Theme: Imprisonment ~ The abrogation spark above all wishes to restrict and restrain movement, to govern precisely how ether, objects and bodies move. Always the overriding intent is to restrict, restrain, and set limits.

Spark Persona: The Arcane Gaoler ~ The Arcane Gaoler wishes to rule the way that Woe moves other bodies and his own. It will manifest its will in the way he moves first, taking on strange behaviors such as refusing to step on cracks in the floor or walkways. Othertimes it may demand that he only take an even number of steps when going to a specific locale.

Witchmark

Witchmark: A scar in the shape of an Umbral Silence rune on his chest. The tissue of the scar is blackened by the risidual energies of the Umbral rune.

Mutations

Competent

Leg Shackle : The Arcane Gaoler has forced a slight gait disorder upon Woe, to where he will often walk, with one leg lagging behind as if it has been shackled once too often. It only appears when he's walking at ease, and doesn't interfere with acrobatics or sneaking around, or other active maneuvers.

Approval

Knuckle Spurs : The use of quick barriers has produced one of the first effects on his physiology. The use of barriers and quick shields has strained the joints of his hands, to the point where their knuckles have bulged slightly into spurs. On one hand, this increases the bone density and strength of his hands, yet at the same time limits their movement range, and makes it harder for them to flex backward.

Expert

  • Rattling Shackles: The arcane gaoler likes to remind it's host that it is in control, and as such makes its presence known when he isn't actively using its magic. When not channelling abrogation magic, the sound of chains lightly rattling follows him as he moves. It is only lightly audible, not over the sound of crowd noise or such, but in complete silence may be heard. Approval
  • Chamber of Silence: Building from the theme of making noise when it isn't being used, as in Rattling Shackles, when Woe has flipped a field, it will be apparent, as a sudden and pregnant silence expels ambient noise. It won't stop anyone from making noise individually, but will have a palpable air of menacing, flat silence. Like the silence before one's ears pop from a change of air pressure.Approval

Previously Approved

Agoraphobia The Spark will engender a dislike or outright fear of open spaces, which is tempered by Woe's discipline skill. While his discipline may mitigate much of the fear of open spaces, the spark echoes his intolerance and it will tend to overspend ether on its shields and fields while in open spaces. There's a slight benefit to this as it will usually confer extra strength and resistance to these shields, but the added strength of the shields is always accounted for in ether expenditure.

Approval

Lock and KeyThe arcane gaoler is a spiteful and hateful spark, and will not always tolerate the movement of energies of even Woe's magic through its fields. Thus, his Exception ability from Abrogation has grown strict and will only allow a chosen specific technique to move through its fields, rather than all techniques within an entire discipline. On the one hand, this allows Woe an added control over his fields when going against mages who share his other disciplines. On the other, it disrupts his spell-casting through his own fields by severely curtailing the freedom ordinarily allowed through Exception. Before allowing a technique to be given an Exception, he must meditate at least a few bits in order to alter the field to allow that technique to pass through.

Hone

Spark Theme & Persona

Theme: Sadism ~ The Hone spark takes great satisfaction in cornering, outmaneuvering, and trapping prey. Once the prey has been caught up in the trap, it especially takes delight in twisting and warping their physical being with runic magic.

Persona: Umbral Arachnid ~ The Umbral Arachnid is primarily an arcane trapper, a tactical entity that seeks to corner and encase its prey in a latticework cage of peril, whether by way of physical impediments and/or arcane traps. The Umbral Arachnid values control, manipulation, order, and self-preservation. It despises the concept of altruism, chaos, and emancipation. The Umbral Arachnid sees itself as a cardinal entity, a monarch among sparks, and is hungry to affirm supremacy over its host and every other spark he possesses.

Approval

Witchmark

A series of jagged runes marking the skin of his collarbone, with shadowy edges creeping over that area of skin. They formed sharp and jagged edges as they wormed their way across his neck, and winding around it, formed from several Umbral runes.

Mutations

Competent

  • Umbral Weaver: The Umbral Arachnid has sunk its feelers into his various divine marks as well as his other magics. Thus, he will be strongly compelled to pair his use of the mark and other magics with umbral traps and umbral runes directly applied alongside them. Refraining from using the magic alongside his other abilities will test his discipline, scaling with the power of the ability or magic used. Approved: here
  • Creeping Shadows: The edges of Woe's shadow has grown long, jagged, thorn-like protrusions to its profile. Their appearance is blatantly obvious to any who see him casting a shadow, and they writhe as he moves around. In addition, when shadows fall upon Woe, they will writhe over his skin in strange, distorted patterns that are quite impossible to ignore in bright lighted areas, or under daylight. Approved: here

Expert

  • A Pale Shadow: Woe's appearance is beginning to change as he progresses with the evolution of his spark. His hair has turned from stark black to ivory white. His eye sockets have sunken in, with darkened skin around them to suggest sleeplessness. His body and limbs have thinned, his fingers are more spindly. His arms and legs have become slightly longer with sharper edges along the joints. Approved: here
  • Shadowy Visage: When Woe activates his core runes on himself, they will cause his formerly pale hair to turn black, with shadowy tendrils extending from each strand. His shadow, if present, will disappear and sink into the rest of his body, causing the Creeping shadows to go wild with movement. Approved: here

Master

  • Arachnid's Mantle: The Umbral Arachnid wishes to announce its presence to the world. As such, four spindly, etheric limbs have sprouted from the back of Woe. They are dark in color, similar to the Umbral Tendrils, with jagged edges and rune-like in appearance. These may be used, whether Woe's hands are full, to draw runic traps on surfaces and runic curses on victims. The limbs can be hidden, folded beneath cloaks and such to an extent. Yet this may only be accomplished with sufficient concentration on the part of Woe, as the Arachnid doesn't wish to hide. The concentration needed is usually minimal, until he uses hone magics, at which point the amount of concentration to keep the mantle under wraps ramps up with the level of the rune used. So for a master level technique or rune, he'd require master levels of meditation and/or discipline in order to maintain the concentration needed to keep his mantle from revealing itself. Approved: here
  • Marked for Torment: When Woe draws umbral runes on victims, he will feel a strong compulsion to harm them in the most excruciating and drawn-out way as he can. The level of discipline needed in order to refrain from indulging in this compulsion is comparable to the level of the rune drawn. A master-level rune or technique will require master discipline in order to resist the temptation. Approval
  • Shadowy Web Trail: When Woe is focusing ether on himself whether through core runes or other techniques, his shadow drags webbed patterns across the ground where he walks. This makes it easy to track him by anyone who has a mind to. He cannot suppress this mutation by any conventional means (outside of soothing with expert attunement). It will always manifest when he is focusing his ether with hone magic on himself. Approved: here
  • Umbral Tendrils: A set of jagged runes have begun to hover over the hands of Woe. They are deepest black in color, and emit a vapor that scintillates with potential for conducting etheric energies. These runes follow the motions of his fingers as he carves runes. If he happens to be holding a weapon with which he draws runes, the tendrils will extend to the end of the weapon. There they would be able to brush the runes onto any surface he strikes. Approved: here

  • Marked for Sacrifice: When Woe draws umbral runes on victims, he will feel a strong compulsion to harm them in the most excruciating and drawn-out way as he can. The level of discipline needed in order to refrain from indulging in this compulsion is comparable to the level of the rune drawn. A master-level rune or technique will require master discipline in order to resist the temptation. Once a season, he will be compelled to seek out a specific victim, often singled out by the spark, to sacrifice to the Umbral Arachnid. Such a sacrifice is the only thing that can fully keep the compulsion at bay and controlled. The Selection of the victim is often random.
If he fails to follow through, whether because he's confined or restrained or otherwise unwilling to, he will suffer double ether drain, commensurate with the power of the umbral rune he drew. Approved: here

Empathy

Spark Theme & Persona

Divine Pathos: Eight-Pronged Pathos

The Empathy spark of Woe seeks to force itself into his everyday manipulations. It also wishes to insinuate itself into his Divine Heritage from Sintra. To this end, it intends fully to latch onto the abilities born from that heritage. It will begin by attaching itself to his personality and altering his predilection for sadness and self-blame and lightening up those emotions. At later levels, it might start to affect his Mortalborn abilities. Approval

Witchmark

The witchmark is somewhat subtle, showing as dark circles underneath Woe's eyes, as if he's losing sleep. If one looks closer, they can see them as dark multi-colored strands underlying the skin beneath his eyes. Approval

Mutations

Competent

  • Comfortable in the dark: Whereas Woe's natural inclination is to wallow in self-loathing and misery, the Spark wishes to uplift him to the divinity to which it feels entitled to share in. As such, while he's able to perceive the darker emotional forces at work in others still, he is not as influenced by them himself. Approved: here
  • Venomous Words: Words have power, and the Mortalborn of Scorpions' words can be as potent yet slow-moving as thick venom. With the influence of this Awakening, Woe will find he's no longer able to manipulate the tangle of other people without making verbal contact. Aside from that, when he does use empathy in tandem with words, he can affect a delayed response in the person. Should he choose to employ a delayed reaction, they will only feel the effects of the changes a break or so after he's gone. Approved: here

Expert

  • Nocte Tectus (Clad in Night): As Woe's Spark develops and insinuates itself into his Divine soul, it begins to skew more toward his own domain of scorpions as well as that of his mother, of all arachnids. This has led to an affinity for nocturnal activity, where Woe's emotions will run stronger during the night time. This will prompt him to seek out and enjoy nighttime activities over those engaged during the day. In addition, he will find himself gravitating toward wearing dark shades in his finery: darker and richer colors/shades of reds, greens, blues, grays, browns, and blacks. Wearing white or lighter shades of his articles of clothing will make him uncomfortable. His skin has taken on a web-like silken texture, which makes his skin more pale while also reflecting more light. Approved: here
  • Transcendent Mood: Since being infected with the Empathy spark, Woe's moods have been shifting and hitting him stronger than any mortal's ought to be. Woe will now suffer greater highs, and deeper lows from time to time as his tangle reorders itself. This can have beneficial or deleterious effects, depending on his success at using and reordering the threads of his tangle. Through use of embroidery, during these episodes, Woe can make near-permanent changes to his tangle through embroidery, which often results in a corruption. When Loom later becomes available at master, he can make permanent changes to others during these episodes by transplanting a portion of his tangle onto another person, although this has a moderate failure rate, and will often result in overstepping into corruption. Approved:here

Master

  • Spiritual Nimbus: When Woe casts Empathy magic on another being an aura appears around his head that is visible to the target(s). For novice techniques, it appears only as a slight tint change in his eyes. For competent techniques, it appears as a thin line of light around his head, as well as shimmering flecks of color in his eyes. For expert techniques, the halo will expand to form a backdrop of multicolored light. The color of the light lays bare his emotional resonance, and his eyes burn with the same intensity as the halo. When using master techniques, the halo becomes blinding and obvious to the recipient of the spell. His eyes become mesmerizing and difficult to avoid looking at. Approved: here
  • Silken Radiance: Woe can see the impression of the underlying tangle of people he looks at. If he gets the impression that they're feeling a particular emotion (and it doesn't necessarily have to be true), he will see the colors of that emotion radiating from small threads that peel off their physical form and float just around the outline of their body. Approved: here
  • True Neutrality: Woe will cease to see things in terms of right, wrong, good, and evil. Instead, he will see deeds, acts, events, and people as relating to the emotions they most evoke or inspire either in himself or others and as such ascribe to them that emotional resonance. Things are not right or wrong, good or bad, they are sad, infuriating, lovely, or soothing. This is to say little of Woe's opinion of one emotional alignment or another, as that is liable to change as he evolves as a person. Just that he will no longer see matters as being 'good' or 'evil'. Approved: here
  • The Gray Fog: To other people, Woe and his clothing and belongings will appear as a figure desaturated of all color, dull in coloration devoid of pigmentation until he notices or knows they are there. This is not to say that his desaturation conveys any sense of camouflage. It is very noticeable to any who can see him. Once he has become aware of their presence by any means, however, he and his belongings, influenced by the colors of his tangle, will only then begin to take on color and definition. Approved: here

Attunement

Spark Theme & Persona

  • Attunement Theme: Spider's Web
  • Attunement Persona: Web Strummer

Woe's Attunement spark, similar to his Empathy spark, tries to insinuate itself into his divine heritage as Sintra's son. As such, he will tend to hear the frequencies as more vibrations or desperate whispers of prey caught on his web. The Attunement spark seeks to broaden the scope of his web of influence.

Witchmark

The first mutation of Attunement, the Witchmark is seen in the eyes and only if one looks closely. They will find that the pupil and sclera are divided by a myriad of proportionate lines, almost as though the eyes were deconstructed and places back together. Woe's puzzle pattern takes on that of a typical spider's web, with four-sided compartmentalization. They're barely discernable unless one is right near him.
