Advanced Settlements

Introduction

There comes a point where a Settlement no longer fits into the restraints of The Settlement System and becomes larger / stronger / more than that. At that point, it becomes an "Advanced Settlement". An Advanced Settlement is maybe a small hamlet, a barony, a village. It's more than a settlement and - of course - there are no limits to what it might become.

When Do I Transfer Over?

That's up to the settlement leader. There are, however, basic requirements you must meet.

  • Your settlement must have a population of at least 80
  • Your settlement must have an order of at least 80%

So, What's The Difference?

Fundamentally - you are no longer concerned, at this point, with Order or Population in such small detail. This has become a hamlet, a village, a fleet, whatever it may be - and you now need to focus on two things

  • Areas of Need
  • Areas of Growth

Advanced Settlement Tracking Thread

When a settlement is agreed to be an advanced settlement, then a new tracking thread is created. This is split into the following sections.

Resources

  • These are things you have. That might be buildings, land etc.
  • When you first become an Advanced Settlement, resources are the snapshot of what you have achieved in your Settlement so far.
  • These are expanded by writing. If you want to add a circus - then you'd best build one!
  • Resources also includes people (NPCs), animals, things like discounts or bonuses that you've build up in your settlement.
  • WP are also included here. Same Taxation rules apply.

Areas of Need

Each Advanced Settlement has 3 x Areas of Need. These are :

  • Physical (This is the "physical" need for structure / infrastructure. It is the need to have somewhere to sleep, shelter from the weather, and food to eat.)
  • Safety (This is the need for safety and security. At first, this is quite simple but it will become more complex and consider such things as law and order)
  • Belongingness (This is the need to belong where you are - it's the need to be part of the community. )

These three needs are as present in a pirate crew as in a barony. How these needs are experienced in your Advanced Settlement will be discussed at setup of the Advanced Settlement.

Status & Objectives

  • Each area of need has a status - this is shown in terms of a percentage (%). At startup all Areas of Need are 0%.
  • Each area of need has up to three objectives. These will be determined by the mod overseeing your Advanced Settlement and will give you things to work towards. They might be quite broad (eg: "Plan how you will use this land") or might be very specific ("Have a party!").
  • Once a need has been met, you should post in your tracker and the mod will award 5% for each met objective.
  • Until you are at 50% in any need, you will have 3 objectives at a time in each one. Once you reach 50%, you will have 2 objectives. This demonstrates how it is harder as you progress.

What You Might Become a.k.a Areas of Growth

Areas of Growth are opened up in one of two ways:

  1. Reaching a threshold of 50% in an Area of Need.
  2. Via stories which go outside the current objectives.

Areas of Growth function in the same way as Areas of Need, however, they develop along the theme of the Advanced Settlement. They are things that your Advanced Settlement can live with / function without - but which add to it. These will be mod-determined but, if you have an idea for what they might be - reach out and discuss.
