Ashan 17, Arc 724
„Let me get this straight“, Tristan’s grandmother Ebony said as they slowly walked through the streets of the Glass Quarter, their arms linked. “You offered to build a pond for your new Igelak friend, but you don’t know how to build a pond, so you’ve decided to ask some to help you. And you think that the best place to find someone who can build a pond for you is at a community garden where people can rent planting boxes and grow vegetables.”
“Please tell me, Tristan, why don’t you just hire an engineer?” she wanted to know and raised an eyebrow ever so slightly. There was nothing condescending about her tone of voice. She didn’t sound as if she thought that his idea was stupid either. She spoke calmly. Her grandson might be a little on the eccentric side sometimes, but he was definitely not an idiot. He had been a duke once. He had officiated a literal Immortal’s wedding and saved lives as a healer and alchemist.
If he wanted to go about something a certain way, he usually had a good reason.
“First of all”, Tristan told his grandmother. “I need someone who knows something about plants in general and gardening in particular for my project, and the people at the community garden are more likely to be familiar with those things than engineers – or know someone who is. Secondly, hiring an engineer who usually works on houses or roads is excessive in my opinion. I just need someone who knows a little about building things and digging holes. Thirdly, the people at the community garden probably have a shorter waiting time and might appreciate my money more.”
And fourthly, I want to make connections – and friends. I want to get in touch with people from all walks of life and not just members of Rharne’s high society”, he added.
When she heard that, Ebony smiled and inclined her head slightly.
Tristan nodded in turn and together, they approached the community garden. They were dressed comparatively casually, in clothes that were, while of excellent quality, not overly fancy or flashy. They didn’t want to look out of place here, but look as if they actually belonged.
