The cities and villages of Melrath are as varied and diverse as they come. The capital of Raelia is the the jewel of this western kingdom, playing host to a merchants, artisans, Aesir priests, as well as a cut throat political landscape dominated by the nobles of Raelia. To the south in the depths of the Myrkvior Forest lies Melrath's second largest, and oldest city, Fensalir. Here people have learned to live alongside spirits and the natural world by maintaining their loyalty to traditions laid down the first Melrathi. To the east lies the small fishing village of Noatun, and to the western mountains rests the Mer city of Verimeer, the brewing town of Alivilda and the alpine village Vormund.

Speak!

Illuvia stood casually at a nondescript blacksmith's shop. It was run by an artisan known to offer blade sharpening services. In the folds of her cloak, the kitchen knives nestled snugly, awaiting the artisan's careful attention. The knives yearned for the touch of skilled hands to restore their sharpness. One of her fingers was wrapped with a bandage because the dull knife had failed to chop an onion and she’d nicked herself.

"Morning, lass. What brings you to my humble forge?" the smith inquired, wiping his hands on a coarse rag. He smelled bad but it was hard to notice with all the other smells in the market.

Illuvia offered a polite smile. "Good morning. I've brought these knives for sharpening. They've served me well, and it's time they regain their edge."

The smith's eyes gleamed with a craftsman's appreciation as he unwrapped the bundle, inspecting the knives with a seasoned eye. "Fine blades, these. I'll have them sharp as new in no time. You're a cook, I reckon?"

Illuvia shook her head. "not really. If I were, I could probably afford better knives."

The blacksmith chuckled, a hearty sound that reverberated in the workshop. "Aye, these aren’t the best. Still should get da job done doh. Leave these with me, and I'll have 'em ready for you by day's end."

"Thank you," Illuvia said, handing over some of the weapons on display, as if wishing she could pick them up and practice with them.

“Luvi is that you?” called a voice from her left.

Illuvia found herself at a familiar juncture, where the vibrant markets beckoned with promises of adventure. As she navigated through the bustling crowd, a friend approached with a cheerful invitation to join in a spontaneous shopping spree.

"Come on! The market is calling, and I've heard there's a fantastic new shop. It'll be a blast!" urged her friend, a twinkle of excitement in her eyes.

She considered the tempting offer, a brief hesitation crossing her features. "I appreciate the invite, truly. It's just that I've set aside today for some focused magical practice. There are specific things I need to work on, and I've found that distractions can be a bit, well, counterproductive."

Her friend tilted her head, curiosity evident in her expression. "Can't you practice magic while we shop? Multitasking, you know?"

Illuvia chuckled, appreciating the suggestion. "As much as I'd love that, magic for me requires a level of concentration that's hard to maintain in a bustling market. I might end up hurting myself, or someone else. I wouldn't want magical mishaps on our shopping adventure."

Her friend burst into laughter, envisioning the whimsical scenario. "Alright, fair enough! But you owe me a raincheck. We'll have our shopping spree another day when there's no risk of accidental pumpkin transformations."

Illuvia grinned, relieved that her friend understood. "Deal! I promise we'll plan a shopping day soon. Meanwhile, I'll be at home, elbow-deep in my studies. Wish me luck!"

In the solitude of her room, Illuvia, ever the ambitious mage, embarked on an experiment with drawing runes of strength on her body and attempting to tie them to verbal triggers instead of touch triggers. Intrigued by the idea of controlling the runes through spoken words, she gathered her thoughts and began the intricate process.

Illuvia's finger traced the lines of the Rune of Strength on her forearm as she murmured the chosen verbal trigger, "Empower." However, her initial attempts were met with disappointment as the rune remained dormant, unaffected by her command. Frustration crept in as Illuvia grappled with the challenge of synchronizing the verbal trigger with the runic inscription.

Undeterred by the initial setbacks, Illuvia adjusted her approach and drew the rune on her other arm. "Strengthen," she declared, hoping for a different outcome. Yet, the rune showed no signs of responding to her voice command. Illuvia found herself in a cycle of experimentation, attempting various phrases and intonations, only to face repeated failures.

As Illuvia persisted in her pursuit of a successful verbal trigger, the room echoed with her determined yet increasingly exasperated voice. "Enhance. Fortify. Boost." Each attempt was met with the same lack of response from the runes on her skin. The challenge of bridging the gap between spoken word and magical activation proved more daunting than she had anticipated.

As frustration lingered in the air, Illuvia took a moment to reassess her approach. The complexity of tying verbal triggers to runic magic became apparent, and a sense of humility settled in. She acknowledged that mastering this aspect of the arcane arts would require patience, refinement, and a deeper understanding of the intricate connections between words and magical intent.

With ethereal energies dancing at her fingertips, Illuvia delicately drew the Rune of Strength on her arm. The lines glowed faintly with magical essence as she prepared for the next step. Brimming with confidence, she took a deep breath and declared, "Enlighten!"

"What am I doing?" Illuvia muttered under her breath, casting a critical gaze at her own magical blunder. "Empower, Illuvia, not 'Enlighten.' Focus!" Her internal dialogue turned into a brief string of muttered swears as she scolded herself for the lapse in concentration.

She tried to switch gears and focused on honing the clarity of her magical intent. Each breath became a deliberate step toward mental clarity, a necessary foundation for the intricate dance of words and magic. With unwavering determination, Illuvia channeled her energy into the singular purpose of making her magical intent as crystal clear as the pristine runes she carefully etched on her skin.

Determined to shake off the frustration, Illuvia chuckled at her own folly. "Alright, let's get this right," she mumbled, ready to embrace the whimsical challenge of combining words and magic.

There was a pause as she gathered her thoughts and to her surprise, her arm lit up with a soft glow as the Rune of Strength responded. Illuvia blinked in confusion, realizing her comical failure – the rune activated not on the intended word but on a completely different one. A momentary spark of amusement crossed her face at the unexpected outcome.

Undeterred, she decided to embrace the humorous twist she unintentionally introduced. With a chuckle, she tried again, this time with a playful tone. "Energize!" The remaining runes on her body remained unchanged, and Illuvia burst into laughter at her second comical misstep.

As the whimsical failures continued, with words like "Pineapple" and "Tickle," Illuvia found herself enjoying the unexpected twists. Her body flickered with magical responses that mirrored her lighthearted attempts. Each failure became a source of amusement, turning the frustration of previous practices into a delightful journey of discovery.

In the midst of laughter, Illuvia stumbled upon a surprising revelation. The rune seemed to respond not just to the words she spoke but to the her intent. "Empower!" she declared with a mix of determination and a subtle grin. To her delight, her body resonated with magical energy as the Rune of Strength responded appropriately. Illuvia, now with a smile of accomplishment.

Illuvia's giggles gradually subsided, replaced by a thoughtful expression. The whimsical failures had added an unexpected layer to her practice, but she realized that for the audible triggers to become a truly reliable asset, they needed to respond consistently. Her gaze shifted from the glowing rune on her arm to the notes scattered around her room.

"This is fun, but fun won't cut it when it matters," she muttered to herself, a touch of seriousness in her tone. Illuvia understood the importance of reliability, especially in the heat of magical combat. Her fingers traced over her skin, applying new runes to test as she contemplated the balance between the magical and the practical.

Luvi tried calming down to be serious for a few more attempts but her results were mixed. It became clear that she wasn’t going to master this aspect of Hone magic in the span of one afternoon.

Deep within Illuvia's being, her magical spark flickered like a hesitant flame, uncertain and wavering. It resonated with a subtle sense of confusion, a reflection of the intricate connection between mage and magic. Illuvia could sense the latent power within her, a dormant force waiting to be harnessed, but its uncertainty cast a shadow over her attempts to wield it with precision.

Illuvia found herself grappling with the subtle resistance emanating from her own magical essence. It was as if the spark within her questioned the commands she issued, a silent dialogue of doubt echoing within the recesses of her consciousness. She reminded herself that the magical spark was not an adversary but a part of her own essence, a force waiting to align with her intentions.

"Some things just can't be rushed," Illuvia admitted, acknowledging the wisdom that consistency and reliability demanded time and practice. The mastery she sought wasn't an instantaneous feat but a gradual evolution, shaped by the ebb and flow of her magical journey. In the weeks to come, Luvi would practice daily and eventually she would reach her goal.

Just some casual banter about your incredibly rare and powerful magical abilities. NBD

:P

How a shopping trip to repair some knives leads narratively to some magic practice I'm not quite sure. Still it's written well and there's enough personality injected into this magic grind to give me something to sink my teeth into as a ready.

Enjoy the rewards!
