[Sweetsong] The Seed that Dreamt of the Sea

Image

Kisaik was standing astride the shoulder of the Pirate King, as the latter helped out on Lady Vega's family's ship, one of them. It was called the Waking Dreamer. A very pretty name for a nice ship. It was Kisaik that had insisted the ex-pirate's help would be invaluable to keep the boats seaworthy, and the Pirate King was all too eager to prove that he was here to be a member of the community, even if there were some who seemed to think of him still as a pirate. It was possibly even worse when it came to Vega's clan, the Lei'noxes. Reese was particularly adamant about Kisaik and his Majesty's boarding of the Dreamer.

"Oh not to worry. He doesn't need a chaperone, but anyway I'll be with him helping the entire time." Kisaik tried to ply on some semblance of sensibility and compromise with Reese. He was finding it not very effective, even with Kisaik's impeccable manners.

"No, no pirate shall board the ship while I can draw steel." Reese replied, his face stern and stony. Kisaik tilted his head in frustration.

The Pirate King looked as if he was about to say something, but then Shon appeared, and called his brother away from the gangplank that led onto the deck of he Dreamer. "Reese, he's with Sir Chip. If Sir Chip vouches for him, and if Vega vouches for him, we may as well use his help."

"Yes exactly my thoughts!" Kisaik said, "My friend here is just wanting to show that he can work for the good of the clan as well as anyone, and wants to make sure your boat is nice and sea worthy."

Reese cast a glance toward Shon, hurt pride evident on his face, but then shrugged with a huff, and went to assist his twin. "Fine, but I'll be watching. I have eyes on every belaying pin on this boat. Mind yourselves."

Kisaik smiled, and then tapped the Pirate King on the shoulder. "See? It's all coasting downhill from here!"

The King winced, and said to the tunawa, "I don't think downhill means what you think it does, but I appreciate the sentiment."

So saying, they got to work, sorting the gardening situation, which happened also to be Reese's domain on the boat. There was a small place on the ship that had salt buoys, and a little growing garden to keep citrus fruits growing on the deck. Kisaik marveled at the idea of using the open sea as a growing field, and his mind was awash in all manner of ideas along those lines. He hopped down, and then blinked toward the salt buoys. He'd not seen them before. Although he'd grown up in the South, he'd spent most of his time in Magani, and avoided ships. This was his first time encountering the strange weed.

With a tentative bite, he nibbled on the leaf, and brightened up as its properties were revealed to him through his Green Lore.

"Oh my! Imagine if I could make a tree boat that drank the sea water!" Kisaik blurted out the idea as soon as it occurred to him.

Reese, who was already not entirely disposed to trusting Kisaik, by virtue of his leading a pirate onto the decks, scoffed as he watched them sorting out the salt buoy flesh barrels....

The Pirate King however, quirked a brow, at least having the virtue of curiosity about his acquaintance's idea. "How on Chrien's sticky backside would you accommplish that, Chip?"

Kisaik rubbed his hands together as he chewed on the salt buoy's flesh, and continued to think on it. "If I could find a good tree seed, and grow it up to become spliced with the salt water absorption of the salt buoy, and also the fresh water production, I coulld make a huge fleet of garden boats, living garden boats!"

"Can you..." The King asked, "Do that? What is this, some woodfolk magic?"

"Plain old fashioned gardening! Turned up to the heights of possibility!"

Kisaik waved at Reese. "I really must insist that you be a part of this brave new venture, Reese. Your skill at both engineering, and woodwork, and gardening can ensure that this is a success. I can shape wood well enough, but I need to know how it ought to take shape... What do you say?"

Reese must have been intrigued, because he asked a follow-up question, and the annoyed tone that had been there previously was fading. "How large will this ship be, exactly?"

Kisaik thought on that, pleased that Vega's cousin was willing at least to hear him out. Then he lit up, "Ahh! Large enough to accomodate a sizeable crew of my kind, perhaps cadouri. I don't want to exclude big folk either." Kisaik frowned as he thought about it. "I suppose I can convince the Sweetstone tree to help me build up a tree, about this many fathoms long." He held up the fingers to count.

"That's about the size of a ketch..." Reese said. "You think you can do that, shape an entire tree into a boat. A living boat?"

"Of course!" Kisaik said, "But it won't float well without your expertise, I don't think." That was settled then, Reese had just about talked himself into the shaping. "But that will come later, I wanted to secure the agreement before I even think about changing a tree's natural shape."

Reese nodded, grunting. "Fine. I'll help make it seaworthy, and let you know how you ought to grow it. But don't expect me to step foot on it. It sounds... strange."

The tunawa frowned, but nodded, understanding the biqaj's skepticism. "It'll work! Trust me!"

Then he collected his seeds, the riversteel seed from his hair, and set off toward the Sweetstone tree.

There, his tribe was gathered, as he'd bid them to do. A few signals of acknowledgement passed between the small tribe of tunawa. Then they began work, tracing the spiritual sigils in the earth, toward the epicenter of the seed's planting, as Kisaik put it in the ground. "Oh Sweetstone! So recently grown yourself, will you grant vitality to this fledgling seed that dreams of the sea?"

They poured special fertilizing tinctures into the ground around the seedling, tracing little canals that fed into the planting sight, as Kisaik instructed. A two separate points, he placed the flesh and bladder of the sea buoy in a duvet, and then the leaves of the sea buoy in another. Splicing both the trait of converting salt water into fresh water, for nourishment of the tree as a whole, and also to generate fresh water from its leaves, that it might nourish soil on the deck of the ship, for growing of other plants.

They chanted and danced and sang, all the tribe did, as Kisaik performed the rites at the center to coax the diri of growth from the Sweetstone Tree, that it might grant the tree the power to grow to full measure in a few trials.

Over the next few trials, Kisaik was hard at work, along with Ce'nija, shaping the tree into the proper shape and form, sculpting hollows for the crew to sleep and also for cargo. The tree-ship grew fast, so they had to work equally as fast, and consultation with Reese were short and to the point. He told them what they needed to know to form sails from the leaves of the riversteel tree-ship. Then how the masts for those sails to be born upon should sprout from the deck as if they were branches. In the end, they had a good shell of a ship, but it needed more work before it could be seaworthy.

A casting-off ceremony!

Kisaik arrived at the shores of the eastern edge of Fool's Run. There, he and several tunawa tribes people who volunteered to crew the ship and maintain it, were assembled. Reese was there too, and the Pirate King, who stood somewhat amused as the tunawa set about preparing the ship to take to the water.

"Now I dedicate this ship to the spirits of Sweetwine! To Ilaren for the precious bottle of sweet wine that was fetched from market today. And to Ashan, without whom I would not have the positive connection to the spirits today! Huzzah!" So saying, he smashed the sweet wine bottle against the prow of the ship. And so the tunawa crew pushed it off from the sands of the beach, and into the deeper waters.

The sails perked up as they took tot he salt water, the flesh of the salt-buoy infused as a trait into the riversteel roots, while the leaves glistened with fresh moisture, water that was clean and drinkable, and would keep the soil of the deck fresh.

"Huzzah!" The tunawa cried, as they sailed off to explore the ocean. Kisaik stood at the figurehead of the shp, searching the distance for the beauty of it all.

Re: [Sweetsong] The Seed that Dreamt of the Sea

Rewards Requested

Notes/Warnings: A few abilities were used here to create a living ship made of riversteel wood, spliced to drink the salt water and convert it to fresh water, to sustain it as a living thing. Soil is built into the deck of the ship to further nourish the ship itself as well as a garden. Kisaik used a whole raft of abilities here:

Arboreal Wizardry

Kisaik:

Knowledge:
Gardening: growing a riversteel tree, in a moment's notice with spiritual help
Mount: Pirate King: A royal mount
Seafaring: Every new ship requires a casting off ceremony
Singing: Performing a ritual song doesn't require a stellar voice.
Woodworking: Collaborating with other woodworkers and keeping on task to shape the wood the way it needs to take form.
Woodworking: Shaping a ship from a live tree.

Loot: A living ship (Ketch of Good Quality), made of live riversteel wood, spliced with the ability of the salt buoy to filter sea water and produce fresh water from its sails, which are specially designed to moisten the soil, as well as collect in drinking vessels. It's a ketch of good+ quality, crafted by Ce'nija, Kisaik, and Reese (sweetsong npcs)

Comments: Wow!

Sweetsong sounds like an amazing place. An actual (former) Pirate King lives there. I really liked the way you used the different NPCs in this thread, Kisaik, and the first ship, the Walking Dreamer sounds amazing. I’ve never heard of a ship with a garden on it before!

Kisaik is a quirky and highly creative PC, and you play him well in that regard. A tree boat sounds fantastic!

I like how you described the process and had Kisaik and the NPCs work together. The ship sounds amazing, and I love the ending of the thread, with Kisaik standing at the figurehead of the ship, searching the distance. I hope he’ll have lots of adventures on his new ship!

This warrants Loshova progression in my opinion. Feel free to post a thread in the PSF!
