Tongue Twisters
Tongue Twisters is a small cozy tavern in the south east corner of Scalvoris Town. The outside of it is made of ship wood that has been repaired by the university and Saoire’s school since adopting it as a knowledge hub. Engraved on the door is the name of the shop carved into the wood in Scalveen and Common (anyone is welcome to add the name of the pub in another language to the door).
Inside, the atmosphere is not that different from any other tavern. There's a warm fireplace, several round wooden tables that allow everyone at a table to face everyone else, a large wooden bar, games in one corner, and a small stage for bards in the opposite corner. Bards are paid to play here at times, but they must sing and they must sing in a language other than Common and Scalveen. A shelf behind the bar holds a series of books on languages from around Idalos that have been annotated by Cunyuega herself. She will never let these books leave the walls of the pub, nor even the shelves when the pub is open, but during the day if you manage to impress her she may just let you use the books during the day.
But this isn't a tavern just anyone can drink at, for it is exclusive to members. And members must prove themselves to Cunyuega, the owner and only bartender that ever works there. All members must at a minimum speak (conversational level) Common, Scalveen, and one other language. The purpose is to maintain the atmosphere of the pub as a knowledge hub for the university and Saoire’s school.
The tavern is a place to "trade tongues" as Cunyuega likes to put it. Here, linguists, travellers and polyglots gather together to speak in a variety of languages. It’s an opportunity for individuals to learn new language and practice their current languages in a relaxed atmosphere.
Membership Testing:
Testing in a new language comes with a variety of tasks set by Cunyuega, and three others fluent in the select language, chosen by Cunyuega. The tasks must be performed before the whole of the tavern on the day of testing. They must:
- Perform one song, piece of poetry, or small theatrical performance native to the selected language.
- Must compete in a drinking game with three of the judges using only the language
- Must write and read aloud a self evaluation in the native language (if a written language is applicable, otherwise must be spoken). These usually takes the form of creating a piece that may later be performed by another testee, as previously described.
- One additional task custom made for the applicant. This additional task must be requires its own additional thread and often involves translating a piece.
All members get special flagons, made from a special blend of the various Scalvoran Sands, by a master glassblower in Egilrun, to be incredibly durable so that it is terribly difficult to break, even when trying. Members get a gemstone added to their flask for each fluent language beyond Common and Scalveen they have obtained. All of this is paid for and provided by Cunyuega herself, and all services in the tavern are free to all members.
Many people in need of translation services will come to Cunyuega's to find and hire a translator. Though they are not allowed inside the pub, they may slip a posting under the door for Cunyuega to pin up on a notice board inside the pub. Cunyuega herself no longer takes jobs, but she does maintain a vast network of contacts to help find jobs for her members. Cunyuega's prices for hiring her translators is often steep, but she does guarantee the quality of their work.
Excluding the hiring of translators, all services are refused to non-members. However, services include food, drink, temporary board (no more than 30 trials), access to translating jobs, games, shows and performances.
