Faith was exhausted, he knew that. They'd spent some time together in Karem's realm the four of them and that had been lovely. But for all that she put on a smile and a brave face to the rest of the world, everything that had happened had hit the young woman and hit her hard. She had been unprepared on every level for the attack and then, for being a general. Faith had, of course, done her best and Padraig had seen the toll it took on her. But what had been worse than anything, the worst of all of it, was the encounter in Uthaldria, in the hidden Coven base, where she had seen how Rose was - somehow - tied up in Ellasin's past. There, Faith had held their daughter for just a moment and there, the little girl had literally crumbled to dust in her arms.

It had hurt her more than anything had ever hurt her.

She hadn't tried to hide it from him, there was no point. Besides, she'd finally found something which was too big an emotion to put into her hands and so, Faith had just done her best to swallow it down, to ignore it. Because she simply couldn't deal with it as it was, so she made sure that she didn't think about it. It wasn't healthy and, eventually, it would out, she knew. But up till now it was just too raw, too much, too painful. After all, she needed to be able to put one foot in front of the other and to function for the sake of the children if nothing else. So, that's what she had done. She had focused on the twins and poured all her love, attention and focus into them.

But, of course, she still had duties. Things to do. Padraig thought she should take more time off, Faith knew, but she had to get back to some kind of normal and so, she'd been off to Viden in the day time for the last few days, but she'd been glad to come home and be with the three of them. The twins, nearly two arcs old now, soon to celebrate their second birthday in fact, were chatty and giggly. Their personalities had continued to develop in the way that they'd been, frankly, since birth. Noah, with his mop of brown hair and pale silver eyes remained the determined, scrappy one of the two. Most of the time he simply sat back and watched, content to let his sister do the talking and the working out. But when it came down to it, he was the one who would face a challenge head on. Madison seemed to be almost his reverse, physically. She had her mother's black hair and eyes the deep golden colour of Padraig. Ever the curious one of the two, she was always looking, searching, trying to work out. Their Velduris wolves, Starr and Nova, were constant companions and it was there, in their home in Rharne, that Faith was able to just be herself.

Katie had, of course, spoken to Padraig about her concern for Faith. Katie saw a young woman barely older than a child herself and, frankly, Katie felt that Faith had been pushed beyond any reasonable human limits. If she could have a chat with this Ellasin character, Katie told Padraig passionately, then she'd be giving her a talking to and then some.

However.

Faith was due home, any moment, and Padraig - by virtue of their shared bonds, knew when she got there, of course. As the front door opened, Padraig could sense that Faith was feeling ... unlike anything she'd ever felt before. She was elated, terrified, and most certainly in shock. She was stunned, to her core. The depths of her feelings were such that, as they walked in to the house, her hand firmly clasping that of their daughter, Faith felt and heard Padraig move. He was worried, she knew. Worried about her and what she was feeling, because he could sense it.

He was going to come out here, out into their hallway, and he was going to see their daughter. Faith knew her husband and so, she dropped to her heels where she was and she turned Rose around by the shoulders, to face her. That way, when Padraig came in, charging in to save her, he would have a moment of him knowing before Rose saw him. He'd need that, she knew. The emotions would hit him, just as they had her.

So, when Padraig burst out of the living room, into the hallway, there was Faith, kneeling and looking at a child. A child with long hair, tied back in a neat braid with a ribbon. Faith didn't look at Padraig, she didn't have to. He'd already realised, she knew. But to buy him the time he needed, she said to their daughter, very solemnly. "Welcome home, Rose." Rose, for her part, smiled and kissed Faith's nose. Then she turned and looked at her father. Faith watched with bated breath as the little girl looked at him with a question in her eyes. One that only he could answer.

He knew that Faith would be returning soon. But it wasn't in his nature to watch out the windows, to pace the hallways or study the horizon for any and all approaching figures. It wasn't that he lacked concern or care or even a sense of anticipation. It was that he did much better with distractions. And so he'd spent the time up in his workshop and lab. Besides, their connection was such that he'd know the moment Faith came near their home. And he knew that she wouldn't be alone.

He could feel all her mixed emotions. And though they often tended to share and feed off of each other in that way, this trial he'd come a case of nerves quite honestly. The jitters were his own. Which was strange, he'd thought. It should only be a sense of elation, mixed with some concern. After all, she was bringing their daughter back home. The one they'd believed had been out of reach forever, until now. It was completely and utterly unscientific, and yet he was nervous and had questions. Rose had had the time already to become reacquainted with Faith.

As for him? Would he know her? Would she know him, or would he be a stranger to her? Would she have been gone so long that she'd be as much somebody else's, as she was theirs? They weren't questions that scholars tended to ask themselves, that was for philosophers who weren't proper scholars at all in his opinion. But there they were nonetheless. At any rate, he sensed the arrival, heard the latch on the front door turning even from up in his turret, and he headed down. Cyrus and Katie appeared to have made themselves scarce to the extent that he hadn't the foggiest where they'd gone off to.

And then he stopped in the threshold at the bottom of the stairs and took in the sight of Faith and their daughter. Even with the girl turned towards her mother, he imagined that she looked like a mix of Faith and himself, she was beautiful, and there was no question that she was theirs. His eyes glistened with tears not shed, and he didn't even stop to think, how very illogical it was for a scholar like him to tear up. And then he smiled gently when Rose turned around, and his heart swelled.

Did she know him, he wondered when she gazed at him? Or were there other questions in her eyes? Either way, he dropped down on his heels in order to seem more approachable, and he smiled. "Hello Rose. I'm your papa." He didn't approach her, in case she'd rather he didn't. But he did extend a hand, just in case she'd come to him. "I've missed you very much. A lot of people have, even the ones you haven't met yet like your great-grandpa and grandmother, and your mother and sister. They all love you already."

It was all so terribly complicated for the adults in the room. So complex and uncertain, so needing definitions and ideas and .... so very much more than mere words could describe. Faith fretted, Padraig pondered and the pair of them whipped themselves, and each other, into emotions and fears and a whole swirling mess. There was an instant, and by nature of who they were it was for both of them, where Faith felt like her heart might burst out of her chest, so deeply filled with emotions and fear and worry was she.

Yet, to Rose, it was none of those things. She saw Padraig, and a question lit the young girl's eyes. Turning to him, her black hair framed a face which was shaped like his, had pale white skin like Faith and his amber eyes looked back at him. He dropped to his heels and Faith let go of Rose's hand. She didn't push or encourage, because that was not either of their ways but it was still a signal. Rose's head tilted slightly and then a smile lit her face at his words. She was older than she should be - maybe five or even a small six - and she charged at him and wrapped her arms around his neck. "I know who you are, silly." She pulled back and the little face looked at him seriously. A single small hand was lifted to his face and smiled at him. "Hello, Papa."

She frowned slightly, thoughtfully, when Padraig told her that he'd missed her and she nodded. "I saw you. Sometimes in a blink. You and Mama. It's confusing because Ellie is old now, and we were friends." She meant Ellasin, of course, and Faith's eyes were on the two of them, her husband and her daughter, as Rose simply chatted away. "I'm glad she's better now. We met Famula, an' she's my grandma." This caused a wrinkling of her nose and then, Rose declared. "So she's your mama? Because Mama's mama gave her away. The spider-lady's daughter said so." Faith quirked an eyebrow and gave him a slight shrug. She'd explain all of it later.

"I've got a brother an' a sister an' they've got wolves?" Rose seemed disinclined to detach from Padraig. Looking up at him with eyes that were like looking in a mirror, except her unfairly long lashes, she placed a finger on his nose. "I didn't miss you, but I wanted to be with yous." She was evidently an earnest little girl with a very serious expression as she looked at him. "An' I didn't like that you were sad. I could see it, sometimes, when I blinked." She leaned her head, resting against him and then he felt her grin. "Can we explore? Will you show me ev'yting? Have I got a bedroom? That's my own?" As she spoke, it was as though the Immortal influence was starting to fade back from her. She began to - just in moments, snatched here and there - sound like a little girl. Over the next few days and weeks, they'd see that happen more and more.

When Padraig talked about her having a great-grandpa, though, Rose's eyes widened. "Is he really really really old? Another grandma? Like Famula but another one? An' a brother an' a sister too? Do we all live here? Where is ev'ryone? Did they leave because I was coming? An'... oh look!" It was like Cosmo knew, Faith thought and she smiled in pleasure as the large glow-in-the-dark dog came up and gave a low bark. Rose looked a little unsure and Faith wanted to jump in. But, Rose and she had been able to spend a little time together already, and this was Padraig's moment with her. So, Faith stayed still and watched as Rose obviously wanted to greet the dog, but didn't quite dare to. Instead, she moved just a little closer to Padraig. "Is he friendly?" She whispered. "I don't know about dogs."

Notes: Aww man, this Rose plotline always gets me in the feels and you know that. You know that and you posted it anyway. And I had to be the one to review it. ;)

Kidding, I am happy about reading this thread though. I remember reading it back in the day when it was first posted and enjoying what I saw. I hope to see more of Rose in around the world in the future.

Also, she gets to meet another dog, another dog that isn't Gnasher. I'm certain Rose will enjoy her new home and her family that she's been away from so long.

This was beautifully written.

PS Padraig, if you come back and want points/knowledge for this thread, please pop up and resubmit to the review Queue for your own rewards. Thanks!
