17th Cylus, 718
Scalvoris Town

A pall of unease hung over Scalvoris like a mist.

How long ago had it been now since the killings had started? An arc? More? Tio couldn't quite remember when he'd first heard about it, but with every season that passed more bodies had turned up bearing the same signs; signs that all pointed to a serial killer stalking the island. The victims back then had all been prostitutes, the kind of people few cared enough about to be concerned with, and so most people had been content to keep their heads down and wait for the Elements to eventually sort things out like they always did. The unwritten rule was that as long as you weren't a prostitute you were safe, and that had been enough assurance for the residents of Scalvoris to sleep easily at night.

Yet who would have though that it would be the catching of that serial killer that brought things down from bad to worse?

'Skinny Jim' had been found butchered in the streets last season, along with a note from some nut calling himself the Prince of Eternal Mercies proclaiming himself to be the real monster in town. The Elements had found evidence to confirm that Jim was indeed the killer, and despite the violent nature of his execution and the threatening message attached to him the citizens had rejoiced that the serial killer had been taken care of. But now more people were turning up dead, each one bearing the calling card of this Prince of Eternal Mercies fellow, and wanted posters had gone up around town offering a reward for the capture of 'Cuckoo', the name of the man behind the title. As if that wasn't enough, groups of vigilantes had sprung up all over the place, attacking and branding whoever they believed to be a criminal (often mistakenly), and among certain circles there was talk of a group of fanatics gathering together for some unknown purpose. Now it wasn't just prostitutes in danger. Now nobody slept easily.

And like it or not Tio had become wrapped up in this problem when it had encroached itself into his world. Last night, the same night that three women across Scalvoris had been found dead with a message from Cuckoo, a small group of vigilantes had jumped some of his crew as they came back from a night of drinking. His crew had been able to run away with little more than a few nicks this time around, but who knew if they'd get so lucky if it happened again? Tio was the captain, it was his job to lead the charge against anyone who threatened his men, but how did you fight against a group intermingled throughout the population of the island? The only solution he could think of was to catch the man behind the murders, the one emboldening all these vigilantes to act up, and turn them over to the Elements.

It wasn't that Tio had suddenly turned into some law-abiding goodie two-shoes, but in this rare occasion helping out the Elements was in the criminal underworld's best interests. These vigilantes were only crawling out of the woodwork now because Cuckoo had made the Elements look weak, and now they thought they could get away with doing whatever they wanted without fear of reprisal. This 'justice' they claimed to be carrying out was nothing more than egotistical posing and an excuse for violence; after all if they were truly concerned about the criminals around town they wouldn't have waited for a serial killer to come along to inspire them! But if the Elements could make a show of putting Cuckoo on trial and regain their lost strength those vigilantes would scurry back down their holes and toe the line again in a heartbeat.

It was to that end that Tio found himself in Scalvoris Town that night, in the streets outside the house of one of the murder victims. The Elements had cordoned off the place when they'd come to investigate that morning, but now that the moon rode high in the sky they seemed to have all gone home, leaving only one soldier by the front door to stand guard. In order to catch this murderer Tio figured his best hope was to investigate the scene of the murder for any clues, and then make some inquiries about what he found to his network of underworld contacts and see if any leads came up. The snow dusting the city made the handholds along the wall slippery and cold as Tio clambered his way up them, forcing him to take it slowly and carefully, but thanks to the darkness of the night, the power if his ring and his own natural skill in stealth and acrobatics he was able to make it to the second floor without being spotted.

With near-silent footsteps Tio crept through the house, and slipped through the door into the room of the crime scene. It was a grizzly sight; blood stains were splattered everywhere, the slight whiff of decay hung in the air, and in the centre of the room a white sheet lay over the outline of an unmoving woman, red stains indicating the many areas that lay directly over a wound.

Tio bowed his head in a silent gesture of respect for the departed, then began looking around the room for clues. While investigation wasn't a strong suit of his, there was a lot of mess around here to work with. Surely there must be something about that could be of use?

The interior of the Flame Troops command post was far preferable to the chilly night air Sephira now found herself in. She had spent the evening at Redwood Redoubt cleaning up residual paperwork concerning a criminal necromancer she had recently brought in a few weeks before with the help of Flame element Keim’an.

She normally kept to herself when around the other Elements, but the mage could not help but notice the rise in activity at the command post now that a new serial killer was gallivanting through the streets of Scalvoris Town. While she had not been directly assigned to the case of the “Cuckoo”, all Elements were encouraged to keep their eyes open for potential hints at the identity of the killer. This gave her a bit of license in visiting the latest crime scene that night. The Elements had made very little progress on the case thus far, so Sephira rationalized to herself that there was no harm in snooping around a bit.

There were less people on the streets than normal tonight. As the Element emerged into the marketplace from the archway that led to the command post she immediately detected the wariness clinging to those that were out past dark. People were frightened, and even the added presence of extra Elements on guard duty didn’t seemed to bring any comfort to those fears. The Elements needed to end this quickly, before people started losing faith in them as their protectors.

Moving north toward a more residential district, Sephira caught sight of the cordoned off area marking the latest crime scene. A single Land Troop guard was posted outside to ward off thieves or nosey neighbors. For a moment the mage considered sneaking inside and avoiding an uncomfortable conversation, but she was fairly certain she would be allowed inside since the flame pin at her collar marked her clearly as a member of the Flame Troops. Everyone knew the Flame Elements were specialists who dealt heavily in the most difficult investigations. Hopefully there would be no questions asked simply on the assumption that she was assigned to the case.

Approaching the guard, Sephira only glanced up very briefly at the sandy haired man and gave him a curt nod.
“I thought you lot were done for the day.” The guard mumbled while he fished in his pocket for his keys.

“Wanted to take one more look, see if we missed anything.” The mage said crisply with a slight edge of authority, acting as though she had every right to be there.

“Aye, let me get the door.” The guard said grumpily as he finally pulled forth a ring of keys that he jangled loudly in the air before moving to unlock the front door to the home.

Thanking him, the woman turned the knob and stepped forward to proceed inside. Sephira was not sure what sort of grisly scene she would encounter when she entered the home, but she silently prepared herself for the worst.

It was always a travesty when these sorts of things happened in the nicer areas, but no one gave a shit when the killings were happpening in Almund. Lavana seemed more interested in following the trail of cultists, more then she cared for the loss of a citizen in Scalvoris.

Shed come across gossip at the bar and decided that she too would investigate. After all Raskalarns Greatest Failure, would not abide by the worship of false idols. Lavana, her sister Valtharn and Raskalarn deserved such devotion and if she had to butcher the cucks boys and make them bend at the knee to bask in the splendour of the holy trinity then she would cut them down and make them see the light .

A worthy sacrafice in her agenda to reunite her family as one strong unit a strengthened eternal empire never before seen. Lavana would stack the bodies and climb a mountain of corpses to simply touch her twin star. She would leave the cultists in ruination only to build the foundation of her own faith on there shallow graves.

The mortal born heard the jangling of keys and saw a familiar face. She remembered that element soldier, she was a portal wizard. Sephira, they had worked together not long ago saving people from the wreckage of a hovel.

"Good to see you Sephira, I heard about the murder and wanted to see if there was a connection to whats been happening in Almund." She smiled, certainly she couldnt have forgotten her companion that saved those people in the storm.

17th Trial of Cylus during Arc 718
Vega knew about the Prince of Eternal Mercies and she had information, thanks to Arlo having a friend, which meant that this whole "cult of the Prince" rubbish made her want to find people and discover if, when two heads smashed together really hard it did look like two watermelons. That would be just about a good thing to do. So, she'd decided that at some point she was going to investigate this.

Then, Cylus turned into the crazy season where all this really weird stuff happened to her, and them and Vega had decided that she was going to have a few trials off. Whilst visiting the Order of the Adunih to get some contraceptives, she'd tried to help an orphan boy and in doing so had ended up being possessed by some sort of fire-demon thing, having touched the death forged rose which meant that she turned weapons into molten lava, just solid, and said flames and lava crept up her arm. She'd run off to the mountains, trying to make Arlo think that she'd left him but he hadn't even noticed because he'd been transported to Emea in some part of Cassion's Game. When that was over, he just appeared on the mountain with her, so as running away plans went, hers sucked.

And that had been the first three trials of Cylus. It just got more weird right up until they'd woken up a few mornings ago and found that Arlo was, in fact, aged. Add in to that the fact that she had suffered a concussion and had an almost constant headache and Vega felt that a few trials break was a really, really good idea.

Which is why, of course, it just wasn't going to happen.

As she was walking, she saw Lavana. She'd met her before, when the two of them had helped out after the super storm. Lavana, Vega had decided, was a nutter. Not a usual kind either. Oh no, the slow cooked, boil in the bag, mad as a box of frogs kind. That was not her favourite sort, but that notwithstanding, Lavana seemed to also be a pretty reasonable person and so when Vega heard the woman say that she was here because of a murder, Vega sighed. "Yer a bloody slavedriver, you are," she muttered to XIur and grinned, just in case he was listening.

Then, she walked up to where Lavana was. There was no hesitation whatsoever. "Wotcha. I was jus' on my way back from the Glass Temple, cos it's Xiur's birthtrial," she said, apparently seriously, and she grinned at Lavana. "An' I heard you. There's been a murder? Can we 'elp? Vega, by the way. Nice to meet ya." She smiled at Sephira and then looked back to Lavana. "How're you doin'?"

As it turned out, investigating a crime scene was actually quite a bit more difficult that Tio had though it would be. It wasn't that there was a lack of evidence mind you, just that he had no clue what exactly any of those clues were supposed to mean, or how they fit together to discover who the murderer was. The wounds on the body for example looked like they'd been made by a knife or a short sword of some kind, but what good did knowing that do him when practically everyone on Scalvoris either had such a weapon or could get their hands on one with ease?! Being a detective was difficult!

It was as he stood there in the dark, staring blankly at the room in the hopes that some kind of inspiration would suddenly strike him, that Tio hear the sound of muffled voices coming from nearby. It sounded like there were people at the door, talking to the guard stationed outside, but what on earth could they be here for? The obvious answer was the murder, but he'd never heard of the element troops coming back to investigations in the middle of the night unless they absolutely had to, so that seemed unlikely. Someone hadn't spotted him climbing in and called the guards had they? No, maybe he was just overthinking this; after all it could just be that a passing group of civilians had stopped by to talk to the sentry.

The talking stopped for a moment, and Tio jumped as the sound of keys rattling in the front door lock echoed through the house! Oh bugger, they really were coming in! This was kind of an incriminating position to be found in!

Quickly Tio began to look around for somewhere to hide! Underneath the bed or inside the wardrobe seemed like the obvious places, but if these new arrivals were proper detectives they were sure to search those areas. Should he go out the window then? No, the snow outside had made the walls too slippery to climb in a hurry, and he wouldn't be able to close the window behind him without causing a noise. Damn it, why couldn't the murder have taken place in the house of someone wealthier?! At least then he'd have more things available to hide behind!

Since there was nowhere to run or hide, it looked like he'd have to resort to plan C; try and blag his way out of trouble. He'd need to do a fair bit of lying of course, maybe try some bribery or flattery, but he was pretty sure he could pull this off. He was here to help after all, just not for the right reasons. How hard could it be to make them see that?

Just before opening the door Sephira was interrupted in entering the home by the appearance of a familiar face. It was Alva Thorn, the woman who had helped her rescue a couple during the brutal storm that hit the island a couple weeks before. She appeared rather unchanged from before with her warrior’s bearing and the slight gleam of insanity in her eyes. The Element really didn’t know how to feel about the strange woman, although she could appreciate that at least Alva seemed to have some kind of moral compass that had led her to helping Sephira several trials before. Granted that compass might be a bit cracked and persnickety, but at least she had one.

“It's good to see you too Alva” she replied tepidly. “I heard about the murders in Almund, the Elements have been looking for connections between the two, but leads have been hard to come by.”

Sephira shifted uncomfortably at the faintly cracked door, she was a little unsure about protocol concerning non-military personnel and a crime scene but she thought she at least owed Alva a favor. If the woman wanted a peek at the scene then at least it Sephira would be there to keep things under control; Or to attempt to keep things under control, Alva was as unpredictable as a half-starved feral cat.

The guard a few steps away from them seemed unconcerned, though the mage caught him glancing their way from time to time. Reaching into her coat Sephira pulled out a single gold nel and tossed it to him. “Go get yourself a drink; I’ll take over for the next break.” The guard caught the coin midair and looked at her with a perplexed expression. “No need for two of us to be here.” She said casually with a slightly over enthusiastic shrug. The man stared at her blankly for a trill before giving her a twitch of a smile and setting off toward the nearest tavern. As his footsteps disappeared into the distance Sephira watched aghast as a red headed woman whipped around the corner and greeted Alva like an old friend. Her tangle of unruly locks drifted in the cold air while she went on about Xiur’s birthtrial. The mage had never been one for worshiping anything or anyone. Granted no immortal had ever given her a reason to give them an ounce of her time.

The appearance of the second woman immediately made up the soldier’s mind. Things were going to get out of control if she was ferrying more than one person into the house containing the latest murder victim. Turning to the cracked door she pushed it open to lock it from the inside, glancing back at the redhead with a frown.

“Well met Vega, I’m Sephira, but I’m afraid….” Her words faded out to an uncomfortable silence as the door fell open and the Element heard the frantic thumping sound of someone rummaging around in the bedroom. Her hand snapped to her saber, the door creaking as it fully opened to reveal the darkened living room. The mage surged forward, her boots stopping furiously against the wooden floors as she whirled around the corner into the bed chamber; her blade hissing with a metallic hum as she unsheathed it and stood in the entrance of the room. The moonlit figure of a man was clearly defined in the middle of the chamber, the grisly crime scene laid out at his feet.

“Who the hell are you!?”

Sephira had utterly and completely left the door open for Vega and Lavana to do as they pleased but she was far more concerned with the presence of a damned burglar looting the house. Trills before entering the bedroom the mage considered for a moment that perhaps the invader was the murder himself, returning to the scene of the crime.

A familiar voice caught Lavanas attention, and she was so right with her assumption that the Mortal Born was absolutely nuts. There was something inside her that was kicking and screaming trying to break free as even she felt uncomfortable in her own skin at times.

She was nice and courted her with friendly words, candy coating her real feelings towards her or at least that's the impression shed been given not really forgivin the woman for retracting her offer of introducing her to Arlo, a person she had put on a pedestal in terms of knowledge of her problems. Xiur didn't matter to her, so she nonchalantly brushed that conversation to the side as perhaps being absent minded feigning concern for the murder in the nicer end of the island.

Lavana, did know this game and she too could play it well as she smiled warmly.

"Oh, hi there.
Yea, been murders happening all over Almund. Figured I'd see if there was a connection."
As she tapped her two index fingers together to emphasize the point. "Yea everything's good, thank you for asking" she said although nothing was further from the truth, as she was deeply aggrieved with her.

Lavana had taken her attention off of Vega for more favorable company, element or not Sephira was reliable.

"Why thank you, I'm glad to see you looking so well, after the super storm.
It's understandle, but who would I be if I didn't try to help"

She watched her give a coin to a guard before shooing him off to the bar before they opened the door and headed in, only discover the moonlight figure cast in shadow.

Lavana busted out laughing "Holy shit, no wonder crime is so bad on this island. That guard wasn't worth shit, what was he doing staring at the sky like a turkey? He was better off at the bar! The perpetrator came came back to shag the corpse, how lovely" Lavana couldn't get over it, absolutely hilarious on every level.

"So tell me stranger? Is this your handy work? Returning to the scene of the crime for one last look at your victim, don't play I know your sort you ner do well.

Well start talking..."

If Vega had the first idea of what Lavana was thinking or how she felt, she'd have given her a mouthful, but she didn't so she just grinned slightly. To Sephira, she turned the same smile and nodded. The Element was just in the middle of saying she was afraid, but then her words stopped dead. Vega looked as she opened the door and she frowned slightly. "No need to be afraid, it's a'right," she said, most genuinely. "I know him. Not a lot, but a bit. I've seen him runnin' around naked any'ow, an' I'm here to tell you, he's nothin' to be scared of."

Lavana walked in and Vega did the same, after reassuring Sephira (which she hoped did reassure her). Inside the house there was, indeed, someone she knew. "Tio. You don't 'alf get around?!" The man who she had competed against in the Darbyton Derby seemed like a bit of a dweeb if she was honest, but she couldn't imagine him being a murderer. "What in the name of U'frek's wet spot are you doin' here?" Looking around she tried to make sense of what she was seeing. "Look, though, it's not 'im. There's blood everywhere, an' none on 'im." That would be nigh on impossible, judging by the amount of blood that was in here. The young mixed blood looked at it carefully. "Plus, the blood has footprints in it, but none of them 'is size. Look." Glancing down at Tio, Vega raised an eyebrow.

"Dude, you've got smaller feet than me. Huh. I guess there is a link between the size of them an' yer tackle, who knew?" She grinned at him, slightly, but she really didn't want Lavana to kill him. Or vice versa, of course, but her money was on the twitchy mortalborn. "Alright, it's possible that I can work out some of what 'appened 'ere. Followin' tracks, I'm a'right at. But I need the lot of you to show me the bottom of your feet, an' then not move." It was easy to look at the blood and see who'd walked through there, after all, but it was the tracks outside of the blood that was important.

"If that's a'right?" Vega said to Sephira. If the Element was happy with her lending her hunting and tracking skill, then Vega would do so. She was able to more or less work out what happened, she said and she was very confident in that. "It'll take me maybe a quarter break, maybe an 'alf. You guys could search the upstairs, the study. See what the victim was up to, what they were involved in, that kind of thing. Try an' not disturb stuff though."

End of the trial, those were her skills and she was happy to offer them. However, she didn't do anything till Sephira gave the ok. If she did, then Vega would get to work.

The first person to walk though the door was a lady with red hair and a similarly coloured coat, upon which the flaming badge of the fire troop was proudly displayed. She didn't immediately strike him as the soldier type, so given the circumstances it seemed a fair guess to Tio to assume that she was some kind of investigation specialist. In contrasts to her the woman who came in next had tough features, leather armour and a claymore, the sort of gear he'd expect to see on a regular element soldier, but no badge connoting such an affiliation. A mercenary perhaps? He didn't see why a fire troop member would need to hire such a person, but then again he couldn't say he knew that much about the elements besides how to avoid them. Upon seeing him the two of them both issued their own expletive filled demands to know who he was, and Tio raised his hands in a gesture of surrender and backed away slowly as he replied.

"I assure you, there's a perfectly good reason for thi-..."

But thankfully it seemed that fate was watching over him that day, for out of nowhere a familiar face appeared to defend him in an admittedly roundabout way. "Firefly! Perfect timing!" He cheered, beaming at Vega with a million watt smile. He couldn't claim to know her that well, having only met her once before at the Darbyton Derby, but just having anyone to vouch for the fact that he wasn't killer material was a blessing right now. He nodded along enthusiastically as the mixed race explained that he was nothing to be scared of, and added onto the end with a thumbs up. "That's right. I'm completely harmless."

When Vega asked what he was doing here he puffed his chest up proudly. "I'm investigating. I figured that here would be a good place to look for leads on that Cuckoo guy who's been causing trouble all around town, so I let myself in... through the window... and had a looksy around. I didn't have time to explain to the guy downstairs the importance of my quest, but if I could have I'm sure he would have understood." He looked over at the two strangers. "And my highly refined powers of common sense are telling me that you and your two friends here have come for the same reason."

Come to think of it this arrangement could work out quite nicely. The vigilantes harassing his crew would only fall back in line when the Elements established their power again, so it made for sense for an Element officer to be credited for the capture of Cuckoo rather than some random bounty hunter. Four pairs of eyes would also be a damn sight better at investigating than one anyway.

He smirked back at Vega when she made the quip about his feet. Well if that's how she wanted to play it then game on. "Aww, don't be mean Firefly. How's any man suppose to compare to your hairy halfling feet? It's no wonder you and Arlo like to travel so much, you could step halfway to Hiladrith with those things." Despite his good natured bickering he raised his feet like she asked and followed her instructions, willing to let the huntress do her thing. He didn't miss the way that Vega deferred to the woman in red however. It looked like she was the leader of this little party after all.

"So then, Ms..." He said as he turned to Sephira, pausing in the hopes that she'd offer her name. "A thought occurs. We all share the same goal here, and although I'm not much of a detective I do have my own little web of contacts that you might find helpful. How about you let me join your party? I make one heck of a good sidekick, and I have a handful of skills that might come in handy." He extended a hand out for her to shake. "So what do you say. Partners?"

Sephira sent a cutting glare Lavana’s way as she made a quip about the Elements and their ability to guard their crime scenes. The mage didn’t much care for the sour attitude regarding the Elements that was beginning to take root in Scalvoris. True, crime had increased and they seemed unable to stop these copycat killings but the Elements had a difficult job. Sephira was unsure if there were too few among their ranks or if perhaps there were too many that lacked the training and skill to do their job adequately. Either way, there was a reckoning coming for the Scalvoris military, of that the woman was certain.

Once they had all gathered in the room with the intruder, Vega quickly explained that she knew the man, the mage examining him carefully with narrowed eyes as the red headed woman recounted her latest encounters with him. Apparently they knew each other well enough for Tio to be using an odd little pet name with the woman. Sephira frowned, her lips creasing at the edges in muted disapproval.

While Vega and the man called Tio began chatting in the middle of a rather gruesome murder scene Sephira found herself pressing the fingers of her free hand to her head in irritation. This situation had gotten utterly out of control and she was at the end of her rope. There was no telling the trouble she would be in if the deputy found out she had compromised a crime scene to allow a friend inside to take a look. However, they had at least a single break before the guard returned...maybe if they located a lead on the case then she could get Vega, Lavana and Tio away from the scene before anyone was alerted to her error. All the better if they made some headway on the killer’s identity; maybe she could use this to her advantage.

At that moment the intruder, or Tio rather, asked her name and if she would play along with an impromptu investigation.
The mage didn’t so much as speak her name as much as she snarled it.

“Sephira...” It was clear she was cross, and exasperated with them all, but there was a special level of malevolence in her voice when she responded to the man who had broken into an Element’s crime scene.

“Fine!” she snapped frostily. “Vega, do what you can to track down our suspect and everyone…please try not to disturb any evidence.” Perhaps the words came out a bit sharper than she realized but thankfully, she didn’t give a damn about bruised feelings.

“Lavana and Tio, go upstairs and check for leads. I’ll remain with the body.” She barked whilst pointing toward a nearby staircase.
“We have less that one break, get moving.”

The mage turned to the body of the murder victim, ignoring the others as she began her own investigation. Her softer gentler Attunement spark seemed to flutter to life with a delicate touch as Sephira began channeling ether in an effort to detect the Frequency of the house and the murder scene. She closed her eyes and began reaching for the notes. It was unlikely that she would detect anything specific, but perhaps she could get a taste of the killer’s own Frequency, at least enough to locate the direction he took following the murder.
