Winston's Works ~ The Singing Shield
The dense canopy of Sweetwine forest stretched overhead, filtering dappled sunlight onto the lush undergrowth below. Ancient trees, their gnarled roots intertwined like the hands of old friends, stood sentinel around a serene clearing bathed in an emerald glow. This clearing was a secret haven, hidden away from the known paths and frequented only by those who stumbled off the beaten path or made a home of the forrest's depths.
Birds chirped melodiously in the distance, and the distant babble of one of the forrest's many brooks provided a tranquil backdrop to the unfolding scene within the clearing.
Amidst this serenity was a sudden and quite unnatural burst of sound that echoed through the trees. Birds scattered from their perches, and a startled doe darted out of the underbrush, disappearing into the shadows. The sound and great orange light billowed into the forest canopy, casting eerie shadows upon the clearing.
In the center of the clearing, amidst wildflowers and ancient stones, crouched Winston. He was partially sheltered behind a large rock, wearing his protective apron and goggles as he held one half of a
Chi Stone
in his hand. The other half was attached to a refined Firestone (Imedyte), mounted on a tripod with its feet embedded deep into the earth beneath it.Chest
was at the edge of the Clearing, nestled in the undergrowth, well out of harm's way and Angela was back at Sweetsong, safe and sound. He was determined not to take any unnecessary risks with his testing this time and thus he was a good safe distance himself, should anything go wrong and quite ready to duck behind the rock.Justifications
Hi! So, rather then write up the actual construction of the shield itself, I wanted to make a little bit of an adventure of it and demonstrate some danger of Ensorcelling and so instead have gone down the route of writing an adventure around him having done this already.
Thus this thread picks up on his assumed success in the crafting of the item itself (for which see justification threads below) and then having some trouble thereafter
The shield itself and all its capabilities have already been approved in this PSF.
Also, I have put together this tracker to lay out where and when he has done the various things this shield requires to be done to prove he's been working towards this shield's success for quite some time.
The only things I'm aware of that have not before been done that this thread would then be introducing is the actual combination of all these things (which to be clear is within his skill level and approved in the PSF) and the use of the Mountainstone (Territe) Well's smog to negate the fire, etc.

Right now, it was undergoing its final testing, out of the way of any potential passer-bys, and surpassing all of Winston's expectations as
it negated the stream of fire hitting it with ease and swallowing the Wells offensive power
. The immaculate carvings across its surface were gradually turning a darker emerald green as the metal absorbed the energy of the Well. It had taken a season of effort to emboss the visage of the tree on its surface, but it had been well worth it to see Kisaik's Home Tree upon it in its full splendor.Behind the shield, placed immediately within its sheltering presence, was a very delicate looking and eminently presented whipped cream cake. For its sins to the waistline of many a poor sole, it had been made the test subject for the shield's protective capabilities and
was currently sitting quite happily as the Class 1 well short its stream of fire at the shield
.He had followed his designs meticulously, working the Class 2 Mountainstone (Territe) into the metal and imbuing it with the many properties that gave the Grave Gold weightlessness, strength, magical affinity and fire resistance.
As the glow of the flames from the Well lit up his face, he pressed the attack, focusing more energy into the Chi Stone and thus forcing the fire from the Firestone to become stronger.
"How much can this thing take?" Asked
Joe
from beside the ferret."Nat share, bot MOCH mar den dis Well shud be able tuh throw at et. Me used a Class 2 Well tuh negate de magic, soh dis should be a breeze." He replied with a little glee in his voice.
"Does it have much more to give? That fire Well thingy? Perhaps we should hit it with a little lightening as well?" I little mischief lit up in his eyes as the suggestion was made.
The Cadouri chuckled as he shook his head. "Noh, mun, one ting at a time far naw. We will test it bit, by bit, don't yuh worry." He focused a little more energy into the Well. This was the first time he'd really pushed the limits of a Well, but he didn't want the shield for his good friend Kisaik to be anything but perfect and so it's testing would be complete. "Me tink dis Well cun do jost a littal mar... Doh per'aps me may need to smoosh anodda one intuh et tuh upgrade de fars a littal?"
"You done that before?" Asked the spirit conversationally.
"Oh yus. Et's nat a prablem. Yuh jost gat tuh find de Wells, dat's de..." The Well began to shake a little as the energy flowed through it, pushing it now beyond what it could take, something he might have noticed sooner had he been holding it in his hand... Or paying more attention.
He stopped being distracted by the Diri and double his attention back onto the Well, bracing himself down behind the rock just in case. With a frantic gesture, he struggled to maintain control over it, to reduce the force going through it, but it was all too late, or he was not yet experience enough to recover it as the Well exploded in a thunderous bang, sending fire out in all directions.
The shield, cake and all, were sent tumbling, the tripod was wrought asunder and all three of them, ferret, shield and cake, felt the ground give out beneath them as they tumbled into darkness.
Joe opened his eyes as the shock of the sound and light subsided. The quite clearing was once again still and empty... More empty than it had previously been by a very alarming degree. For one thing, it no longer contains a ferret! "Winston? Winston?!..." Chest hopped up and began to trot towards the center of the clearing. It was now covered it detritus that surrounded a
little crater and there were cracks and gaping holes in the ground
.The Diri turned to the locomotive luggage as it trotted purposefully towards one of the holes, far to small to accomodate it. "Chest.. Chest! Yes! Where is he pal? I can't sense him, I think he's out cold!"
Chest attempted to fit into the hole in the ground, but it was for nothing as the dirt began to fall into it, making the hole smaller. "No, wiat, stop!..."
