[Scalvoris] Lore

Image
Image
Welcome To Scalvoris!
Despite its location in the north east corner of known Idalos, Scalvoris is a name known throughout trading and sailing circles for its prosperous economy, jolly citizens, intriguing history and sudden changes. In more recent times, Scalvoris has become a cultural melting pot and area of scientific interest, growing in renown for its varied flora, fauna and geographic landmarks. Various small villages dot the land, including Darbyton and Havardr. The main cities include Scalvoris Proper, which claims to be the capital of the island, and Almund.

Following the Shadow Beast attack of Vhalar 716, a strange mist settled over Scalvoris and when it lifted, the place had changed geographically. Soon the demographics and culture shifted too. Now a growing centre for scientific discovery, unusual flora, fauna and geographical oddities, Scalvoris is quickly making a name for itself as a place where vast treasure and great adventure can be had by those brave enough to venture there.

Scalvoris Lore

Image
History
Image
Formerly a home to pirates and cut-throats, Scalvoris has changed considerably. Now, due to the disappearance of the twenty Pirate Lords following the Shadow Beast attacks, Scalvoris has become a place where great adventure, treasure and marvellous scientific discoveries await those who wish to seek them out.

The history of Scalvoris is roughly split into three sections. Before Arc 616, Scalvoris was a small, isolated island where the few residents there struggled to survive. Its remote location and lack of access to resources meant that it was largely unknown and unimportant. As more records have been found, and people who are interested in history and such have bothered to ask those who live on Scalvoris, more information has emerged about this time. It was a time when those who lived on this rough and dangerous island split into tiny villages worked just to keep alive. However, even then, there were whispers of strangeness in Scalvoris ~ the unusual sands, many of the unusual animals are depicted in artwork which has survived, be it carved on to the wooden structures in Almund or painted on cave walls.

Also, Immortals' Tongue has been known to be a place of wonder and fear, awe and mystery for a lot longer than written history exists for. There are those who believe that once, the Immortals walked the land of Idalos and when they did - Scalvoris was where the junction was between their Domains and the earth. There are others, of course, who say that this is a lunacy and the ramblings of mad men.

Who is right? Who knows?

However, on 1st Vhalar in Arc 616, twenty Pirate Lords arrived in Scalvoris, claiming the place for their own and heralding the 100 Pirate Arcs. The original twenty Lords made The Pact (as it was referred to) and they held to it until the 1st Vhalar 716.

No one except the Lords themselves knew what was in The Pact, but it kept the peace for one hundred Arcs exactly. During that time, the island flourished economically and developed trade relations with other towns and cities in North East Idalos. However, it was culturally strangled by the Pirate Lords and, so the rumour goes, something very strange happened on the centenary of the Pirate Landing. All that is known for certain is that on the 1st Vhalar 716, the third era of Scalvorian history began.

There is no doubt, however, that the Pirate Lords made a massive impact on Scalvoris. Many in Almund, especially, wish for their return or mourn their passing from Scalvoris. Their names are well remembered, though their faces are no longer seen.

Note: These NPCs are "mod only" NPCs and may not be played by players. Thanks!

As the shadow beasts attacked Idalos, on the 1st Vhalar 716, great changes happened in Scalvoris. The twenty Pirate Lords disappeared in the first wave of the attack and a strange mist descended over Scalvoris. For one hundred trials exactly (some say one for each of the Arcs the Pirate Lords stayed) the island was inaccessible. What happened during that time? Those who were there do not speak of it and so it remains a tantalising mystery.

When the mist cleared, the island was irrevocably changed. Previously inaccessible waterways opened, inhospitable waters calmed and a wealth of flora and fauna seemed to flock to the area. People arrived from all over Idalos, some of who spoke of arriving on boats which sped across the water at incredible speed, or having flown on the wings of strange blackbirds.

This third age of Scalvorian history has brought with it new challenges and new opportunities. First and foremost has been a reaching out to the nearby Viden. Scholars from the Viden Academy were quick to send expeditions to this mysteriously changed island. Their initial findings were clear, and still hold true. .. ... Scalvoris has many secrets to tell for those who wish to explore it.

Scalvoris Lore

Image
Timeline
The timeline for Scalvoris is relatively straightforward
Image
Arc Event(s)
198 First recorded history of civilisation on Scalvoris. Early settles describe it as a "rough and inhospitable land"
220 The Immortals' Tongue is discovered by a group of explorers. They report that there are many wonders there, including the constant sound of whispering wherever one is on the island, and that the devout can speak to the Immortals themselves.
221 Priests and worshippers start to arrive in pilgrimage to the Immortals' Tongue.
247 First small village set up in what is now Darbyton ~ the inhospitable landscape and awful weather makes it hard to eke out a living
253 A large trading vessel crashes off Treid's Mouth. Survivors become settlers and they work to try and survive. Winter is harsh that arc and many of them die.
260 Strange swirling lights appear around Immortals' Tongue on the 1st Vhalar. The pilgrims there, all to the last one, fall victim to dreadful insanity and start experiencing horrifying hallucinations. Within ten trials they have all jumped to their death in the icy waters.
270 The swirling lights around Immortals' Tongue disappear, also on the 1st Vhalar. The strange whispers which can always be heard remain.
271 Second generation survivors of the crash of 255 are now fully integrated into Darbyton. This village is not thriving, but is certainly surviving and its inhabitants are a hardy bunch.
298 A new set of pilgrims arrive on Immortals' Tongue. They come from all over Idalos, yet they all arrive within the same ten trial period.
318 A massive storm hits the island of Scalvoris on 1st Vhalar. Legends say that it lasted for 100 trials.
350 Darbyton is now a well established, secure village.
352 During this arc, five large ships crash and run aground at Treid's Mouth. Survivors decide to band together and form what will become Scalvoris Town.
367 Reports of Darbyton being attacked by strange "night creatures" circulate. The village is more or less decimated with only a few survivors. Determined that they will not be beaten, they start to rebuild.
375 After more arcs of battling extreme weather etc, Darbyton is again established and population is growing. Numbers are starting to grow in Scalvoris Town, too.
382 First records of Gunvorton existing. It is spoken about as though it was already there, though.
416 Legends say that the seas around Scalvoris boiled for 100 trials during Vhalar 416, no ships could get in or out. Yet Treid's Teeth (the iceburgs) did not melt. Written accounts at the time speak of a dense fog constantly hanging over the waters, tinged dark blue.
500 Almund is founded and The Tower is noted for the first time in any known records. It is referred to as a military structure, but no more than that is said.
546 Scalvoris is becoming known and smaller villages are popping up. Immortals' Tongue has a reputation for being a very important area to the Immortals, which has resulted in a small but steady stream of pilgrims.
616 1st Vhalar ~ Pirate Lords arrive.
716 1st Vhalar, mist falls, shadow beasts. Pirate Lords disappear
716 100th Vhalar: Mist clears, Scalvoris is changes in many ways, with the waterways more open and even more strange flora and fauna than before (and before there was a lot!)
716 1st Cylus: The Viden Academy in Scalvoris opens its doors.

Scalvoris Lore

Legends / Immortals

Scalvoris ain't like other places, see. You gotta understand, boy, there's things what 'appen here which just don't make sense. They always 'ave, you know. People think it's the Pirate Lords, or some mist or whatnot, but I tells you, an' I tells you it true. There's forces working here on this island what no man nor woman, no race on Idalos understands.
Brandel, resident watchman, Watch (prev).
There are many and varied legends surrounding Scalvoris, the vast majority of which are, at best, wildly apocryphal. However, there is no doubt to those who study history that something very strange is going on. Scalvoris has been the sight of storms which lasted for a hundred trials, boiling water which lasted for a hundred trials, people arriving from all over the world in the same five-trial period and, frankly, all sorts of weirdness, for literally hundreds of arcs. Twenty Pirate Lords ruled this place for a hundred arcs, each one of them vicious and yet their Pact held for... yes, you guessed it, a hundred arcs.
Image
Serious students of the island will discover, also, that 1st Vhalar is a significant date to the island. A lot of it's strangest occurrences have happened or, at least, started on that date. The most recent one still burned into living memory for many. There are as many legends about the strangeness of Scalvoris as there are ears to hear them but all of them agree on one thing ~ somehow, the Immortals are involved. Some believe that the Immortals themselves watch over the island.

Will the truth of this strange island ever be discovered? Is there, in fact, only one truth? It is certain to say that, as of right now, Scalvoris is a melting pot of culture, an area of scientific exploration and discovery. The opening of the Viden Academy marked a very important thing, and it marked Scalvoris as a place of interest to serious scientists up and down Idalos. It is that, of course it is. But more, oh so much more than that...... Scalvoris is filled with secrets.

Who will discover them?

Scalvoris Lore

The Towns & Villages
Image

The capital of Scalvoris, Almund is the place where the influence of the Pirate Lords is still most felt. The city has been built over time, as the buildings are the skeletons of old boats. Retired boats have been progressively stacked on one another, building up the city from sea-level up. Often plain and weather beaten on the outside, and even at first glance on the inside, a more careful look will reveal that even the most humble abodes tend to boast carvings and other woodworking that would cost hundreds of Nels anywhere else. Some of the most talented woodworkers on Idalos can be found in these humble homes.

Almund has become the seat of the council for Scalvoris Island, where law enforcement, education and all civil and military decisions are made. There is an underside to it, also, in that Almund has a reputation for having previously been one of the most dangerous places in Idalos to live and some of the underground factions maintain that. There is danger here, no doubt, but at least these days one has to go looking for it, or be really in the wrong place at the wrong time.

For all that it is not the lawless place it once was, however, Almund is still the place where laws are least adhered to and where almost everything nefarious is available ~ for a price.

[Scalvoris] Lore

The Towns & Villages
Image
Image
Darbyton is a well established little village, most of the inhabitants are quick to point out that they were the first proper settlement in Scalvoris history. Although primarily focused on logging, enough hunting and trapping goes on to largely fulfil their own food needs and almost every home regularly grows bean sprouts to help make sure nutritional needs are met. Between that and spruce tips and the like, very little is imported, which fits in with the nature of the people who live here.

The people of Darbyton are extremely self reliant and proud, and less likely to give in to vices than most of Scalvoris. Still, almost all of them have ties of one sort or another to the people of Almund, Harvardr and Egilrun. It's quite common for inhabitants of Darbyton to go work in Egilrun for a season or two to save nel, often to contribute to a dowry to bring someone in from Almund of Harvardr. This is mostly necessitated by the relatively small size and population. There is always at least one scholar who's main job is tracking bloodlines to ensure inbreeding does not occur. Luckily, given the fluid population of Almund, this is rarely a problem. However, this being said, Darbyton has a surprisingly diverse population compared to the rest of the island, and a high percentage of half-breeds.

After all, the Darbyton residents will be very quick to point out that they, of all the islanders, have had to survive the longest. Made up of the descendants of a number of different shipwrecks, they have had to accept all and everyone. They have a strange mix of being very proud of being Darbyton residents and believing that they are the best of Scalvoris' folk, and believing that everyone is equal.

The shallow bay Egilrun is situated upon is used, these trials, for crafts and crafting. From boatmakers to weaponsmiths, glassblowers to metalworkers, the sound of hammers and saws can be heard almost every break of the trial, with crews working in shifts to produce the beautiful craftsmanship which they might, one trial, become famous for. After the shadow beast attack of Vhalar 716, this place changed to the point that it started to reflect the cultural diversity and melting pot that Scalvoris had become.
With unfinished boats in the water, makeshift workshops and more permanent shops side by side, the buildings of Egilrun are rough and utilitarian. The men and women seem to reserve their true craft for the beautiful pieces they create. There are some singular homes, but barracks style accommodations are common and there is a mess hall where most eat together. Egilrun has become the place which provides for the island of Scalvoris; from the glass vials needed by the science expedition to the clothing and uniforms for the resort, it is a place which represents the people here.
In the most recent arcs, Egilrun has become more and more famous for it's glass and glasswork. This is especially true in light of the sands of Scalvoris and the fabled "rainbow sand" in turns makes truly wonderful glass. It is also starting to develop a reputation around the island as a place where there is fun to be had and good food, too. Fundamentally, Egilrun is on the up and up in terms of it's place on the island, not least because of the stunning crafts which come from there.

Gunvorton used to be a rather nondescript and unimportant area in Scalvoris. However, it's logistical importance and tactical use became more and more evident following the shadow beast attacks of Vhalar 716 and, since then, Gunvorton has become much more influential and important to the residents of Scalvoris. It has several docks and piers, a few warehouses, two barracks and a stable. It is used primarily as a landing point for supplies which are then brought overland to the Tower and Scalvoris Proper via the ever-increasing number of roads on the island.

As trade begins to increase in Scalvoris, Gunvorton is becoming more and more busy, the roads are being maintained and built and the place is starting to get a feeling of being a hub of activity. Small structures are being built, more warehouses and traders appear every trial, it seems. It is whispered that, for those who are willing to invest of their time, monies and effort, Gunvorton might be a very lucrative place. Is there the booming black market here which is whispered of? Are there places where anything is for sale, but nothing comes without a significant price? So some of the residents of Scalvoris will tell, whispered in Taverns and other places where the danger of being overheard is ever present.

But if it was the case surely, then, Gunvorton wouldn't be overseen by such a kind, sweet lady?

The Towns & Villages

Harvardr is made up almost entirely of yurts. While any single building may be disassembled and reassembled elsewhere, there are always enough left here that it has become it's own little village. What was once wholly a mobile camp of fisherman, sealers and whalers placed to take advantage of migrations is now just as likely to have full families, some who have been there for several generations.

Kayaks and other simple boats are used to pursue migrating whales, and handheld spears and harpoons are then thrown at them. As well as injuring, these weapons are usually tied off to inflated bladders or other flotation devices which further slow and weaken the whales. Occasionally a weapon may be tied off to a boat, but if the whale is not weakened enough and dives, this can result in the boat being lost, and with the temperature of the ocean, the would-be whalers as well. When weakened enough, or dead, the whales are dragged back to shore and butchered there.

Seals, sea lions and walruses are also hunted, though these are hunted on shore as there are rookeries of each dotting the shores and they often bask on passing icebergs and nearby sea rocks. Fishing is primarily done from small boats with nets, as almost all the larger boats are dedicated to piracy or other less mundane concerns. There are many here who are skilled in fishing, hunting, fieldcraft and many and varied skills of survival.

Almost all excess is transported to either Almund or Scalvoris town. Although fish are common around all of the island, the whales, seals, walrus' and sea lions come predominantly from here. This means that, whilst Havardr is small, it is a vital cog in Scalvoris' economy.
