Random Acts of Cruelty (Sephira)

5th Cylus, 719

There are fifty two languages that are currently used in Idalos. Some of those languages are harder to learn than others. But it is a well known fact that it is easier to learn a language if you are already fluent in another language within the same family because some words are similar. It is also important to keep in mind that building blocks are important; the alphabet leads to words, and words lead to sentences.

Ari'sora paused in her reading to consider what she had just learned. The thought that there were fifty two languages was a fascination one to her. She wanted to learn them all. That some languages were harder to learn than others were made perfect sense to her. Languages that were only spoken by one people, or only in a small area wouldn't have as much written about them that more common languages would. And unless one learned the language from the natives, having a book or a teacher who was fluent in the language was crucial to learning the language itself. Both of those would be harder to come by if a language was rare, and seldom used.

And as for it being easier to learn a language if you were fluent in a language in the same family as the one you want to learn...well, I've already come across something like that. Since Scalveen has some words that were taken from Common, I'm having an easier time learning it than I would have if the two languages were completely different. she mused.

The part about building blocks seemed to be especially important, so Ari'sora made a mental note to remember it before she continued on with her reading.

Morphology is the study of words, how they are formed, and their relationship to other words in the same language. Morphology skills require an understanding and use of the appropriate structure of a word, such as word roots, prefixes, and affixes. All of these are considered to be morphemes. Morphemes are the smallest meaning bearing units of language. In essence, morphemes are the building blocks of language.

And the building blocks are important. Ari'sora told herself as she read.

Words can be either simple, or complex. Simple words only consist of one morpheme. They don't have internal structure, and they can’t be split into smaller parts that carry meaning or function. Some examples of simple words consist of run, walk, swim, can, do, cat, and sleep. Complex words, on the other hand, consist of two or more morphemes. They do have internal structure, and can be split into smaller parts that carry meaning or function. Examples of complex words include sleeping, worker, and runner.

When she reached the end of the chapter, Ari'sora felt torn. She would be quite happy to read some more. An entire trial spent in the library was her idea of fun. But she had errands that she needed to run, and only a limited amount of time before she had to get back home to her daughter. So with considerable reluctance, she put the book she had been reading back on the shelf, and made her way out of the library.

When Ari'sora reached Little Korlasir, she paused to look at the blacksmith shop curiously. She had heard a lot about it, but had never been herself. One of the people who were teaching her how to defend herself suggested she go there to buy her weapon once she had reached the point that she was ready for one. According to her mentor, the shop sold the usual weapons and armor, but you could also buy jewelry there. And it also offered a number of services like engraving, and the reinforcing of locks and picks. Her sister, Mi'zuri had told her than Little Korlasir was run by Hurk, an imposing looking human man who was a lot friendlier than he looks.

Little Korlasir was located between a bakery, and a general goods store. And it was the latter that Ari'sora was interested in now. She made her way towards the store, but before she could go inside, she heard a strange sound coming from a nearby alley. After a few trills of hesitation, she decided to go see what had caused the muffled thudding sound.

When she got to the alley, she found a person on the ground. She couldn't tell if the person was a girl or a boy, but they were small enough that she believed them to be a child. That child was on fire. To Ari'sora's horrified eyes, it looked as though the fire had somehow jumped from a torch that was attached to the opposite wall to the child. And it couldn't have been an accident because the torch was higher up on the wall than the child would have been able to reach had they been standing up. The child thrashed on the ground for a few trills, then was still. And through it all, the only sound was the fire crackling hungrily. Something had prevented the child from screaming.

"That will teach you to run into me, little girl. You won't be running into anyone else now, will you?"

Until the man had spoken, Ari'sora hadn't even noticed him, transfixed on the horrible sight of a child in flames as she had been. The man was huge. Easily well over six feet tall, and his broad, muscular shoulders made him look strong enough to lift an ox with one hand. His back was turned towards her, so Ari'sora couldn't see his face. But he had dark skin, and tattoos of fire covering his arms.

Ari'sora felt sick. She was cold, but it was an icy chill that had nothing to do with the weather. Her feet were rooted to the ground. She didn't think she could move if her life depended on it. Time itself seemed to move strangely. Each beat of her heart seemed like it took forever to come.

When he shifted his position, Ari'sora could see that he had a tattoo of a spiderweb on the back of his right hand. It almost felt as if she had been caught in a web. Her thoughts skittered through a thick haze that her mind was trapped in.

Then he turned, and the spell was broken. Ari'sora caught a glimpse of dark eyes that gazed at her coldly. Icy terror stole her breath away. Was he going to burn her alive the same way that he had burned that little girl? In that moment, she found that she could move again, and she bolted.

Ari'sora didn't know how long she ran, but she knew that she couldn't stop. She couldn't hear the sounds of anyone following her, but her heart was pounding so loudly that it drowned everything else out. Ari'sora kept running until her strength ran out and she collapsed, shaking in reaction to what she had just seen.

"She didn't scream." she mumbled numbly, still trembling.

"She was burning, but she didn't scream."

We all live in different worlds.

Our own little microcosms that make up our lives. To-trial Ari’sora lived in a world of books and language. Not far away was someone else who was living in another world entirely, and the two were about to collide.

            “Move Ethan!”

The command snapped across the rooftops of Little Korlasir as crackling crimson skysteps ignited beneath the Rupturer’s feet. She crossed just above the skyline of Scalvoris Town, circumnavigating all of the twisting streets and alleyways that her partner was being forced to contend with. The sky above was dark but illuminated by the stars and moons as it was Cylus.

Ethan, a brown haired young man ran below in light leather armor with a broad dagger strapped to the small of his back. At his collar was clipped a Flame Element’s pin. Beside him ran a white wolf, Sephira’s companion Wyn who she had met in the Maze. The Emean creature now ran patrols with the soldier; this was mainly because she kept chewing on Sephira’s furniture if she left her cooped up in her house for too long. The Element had no intentions of buying a new couch if Wyn ruined her current one.

Above them Sephira ran as the spotter in the sky, her Rupturing holding her aloft as she ran across the surface of miniature portals. They were on the trail of reports of some sort mage who had attacked an adolescent earlier that day, and a scout had just reported another sighting in this area. The Special Assistant had been sent in to investigate along with her partner

Sephira funneled ether into her Attunement Spark, and stretched out her awareness as she hunted for any residual Notes of Magic hanging about the area. A few things pulled at her attention but within trills Sephira’s attention was stolen away from her magic.

Someone was running away from something in a hurry a street ahead of her. It was a very small girl with black wings...an Avriel. Or at least an Avriel half-blood. The Special Assistant knew that look of panic, she knew the way people ran when they were terrified for their lives. And that girl was running like her life depended on it.

The Element whistled sharply, catching her partner’s and Wyn’s attention as she began descending, angling the Skysteps downwards to hit the surface of a roof running. Her booted feet skidded across roof tiles before she slid off the edge. A gloved hand snapped out to catch the edge of the roof just in time to slow her decent before she landed on the ground a few yards in front of Ethan and Wyn who were just catching up.

“Why are we stopping?” Ethan demanded. The ex-undercover officer was winded, nearly doubling over from the exertion of sprinting through the Scalvoris Town cityscape. Wyn simply looked excited and was barely panting from the run.

“She saw something.” The wolf swished her tail and yipped softly before darting forward toward the young girl that Sephira had spotted. She had collapsed near the corner of one of the poorer residential districts. The white wolf pranced up to Ari’sora and sniffed her experimentally before licking her on the cheek.

“You were there.” Wyn said matter-of-factly. But it was clear she was not referring to the crime that Sephira and Ethan were investigating, but rather to the Maze. The wolf’s glittering amber eyes peered at the mixed blood Avriel with concern.

“Are you alright?” Sephira asked as she walked up behind her canine companion with her hand resting on her sheathed saber. Attached to her collar was a flame shaped pin and an onyx pin that marked her as a Special Assistant and a Flame Element. Ethan of course stayed a few feet behind to continue catching his breath for the moment.

“What were you running from?” The mage asked knowingly, looking intently at Ari’sora with her onyx black eyes.

So they may remember each other from the Maze since those memories are all shared. Wyn is also here, Sephira's wolf companion from the Maze.

Also just a note, but Sephira has an Attunement overstepping mutation that has caused her eyes to be turned completely black, with no visible pupils.

Shock slowed Ari'sora's thoughts, filtering them in a thick haze. When the wolf spoke to her, she wondered for a trill if maybe this wasn't some horrible nightmare that she was trapped in. But...no. "You were there." the wolf had said. And there was only one "there" she could have meant; the maze.

"So were you. You're like Shadow, only she's a cat." she said softly.

The wolf's amber eyes seemed to glitter as she stared at them. Amber eyes...light. Not like the cold, dark eyes that the man had had. Ari'sora shivered. Light was good. And maybe...just maybe...light was safe.

Someone asked if she was all right, and she shook her head. She wasn't all right. She wasn't certain she ever would be all right again. As cruel as Ren'zar had been at times, he had never burned anyone alive before. What kind of person could do that to someone else? Was anyone safe in a world where people who were cruel enough to burn someone alive were free to do as they wanted to others? Ari'sora felt cold, and sick, and very, very small.

When that same person asked her what she had been running from, that snapped her out of her haze just enough to look up at the woman with wide, terrified eyes that were haunted with what she had just seen. Her eyes widened even further when they fixed on the flame shaped pin the woman was wearing. Flames were bad. Fire had burned that little girl alive at the hands of a monster. She must have been in terrible agony...but she never screamed. Not even once. Ari'sora blinked slowly. No...this flame was different. This one meant that this woman was an Element. Not a monster like that man. Besides...if she had the wolf who was sitting beside her with her, then that meant that she was at the maze too. She swallowed hard, and tried to gather her skittering thoughts.

"Him..." she stammered in a small voice as she gestured back the way she had come.

"Back there...in the alley. She was burning. H-he said...that it would teach her a lesson. That she wouldn't r-run into people anymore..."

Ari'sora's breath hitched in a ragged sob.

"She was burning...but she didn't scream. Not even once. She was just a little girl. She isn't much bigger than Kelf, and he's only three."

                      Ari'sora shuddered.

"I'm sorry...I couldn't...I couldn't do anything. It was too late...I only know t-the child was a girl because h-he said so."

Could she have done anything to save the little girl if she had gotten there sooner? But what could she have done? The man was huge, and she was just barely learning how to fight. What could she have done against a monster that could control fire?

"Then he saw me...and I ran."

Ari'sora struggled to gather her thoughts, but the haze fought her, and time was moving strangely. Some trills it seemed to drag on endlessly, and in the next, it raced by too quickly for her to process. In her attempt to compose herself better, she focused on the small details. And in doing so, she noticed the woman's eyes. They were completely black. In some ways, they looked more like her own eyes than those of most people she had seen.

"Your eyes are a little like mine. Can you see the wind currents, too?" she asked.

It might have been an odd question to ask with everything that had happened, but focusing on the small details seemed to be helping her to not fall apart completely as she was on the verge of doing.
