Arc 721, 121st of Ashan
Darius had made his own way to Sweetwine Wood for the first time in his life. He was a proud Scalvorian, but the majority of his time had either been spent in Scalvoris Town, on the Hollow Sea, or - especially since early Cylus - on Faldrass. He was proud of what had been achieved in Hopetoun, and of the resilience shown by the settlers despite their many challenges.

But it also felt good to have a brief reprieve of responsibility, and to allow himself to be led once more, and to be in the same room as a number of familiar faces made it all the more appealing.

Darius listened patiently as Chancellor Kristoff Manyon offered free tuition at the University of Scalvoris, and while he was sure it was a generous offer, the bearded blond wasn't certain that he'd take it up. He had spoken to Yeva before of his reluctance to sitting in a classroom, and he sent the redhead a quick glance, for it seemed the type of reward that would appeal to his friend.

When Felicia Du'Wintre began to speak, Darius' eyes fell upon the satchels that waited upon the table, and he felt a tingle run down the length of his spine. No matter how hard he tried, the Scalvorian was finding it difficult to ignore a nagging sense of déjà vu. The previous trial had marked exactly one arc since the Faldrass eruption, and that, too, had started off as a well-meaning expedition, with equipment resting on a table, and it felt as though history might be tempted to repeat itself.

Similarly, there were a number of faces in the meeting room that he recognised from that previous event: Balthazar, Oram, and Yeva were amongst those that were familiar. They had each received polite nods of greeting when he'd entered, but Ari'sora had not. When he heard that they were to be organised into groups with a local guide - just as they had been at Faldrass - Darius silently hoped that the half-avriel was in someone else's group. As soon as he realised that she was with Yeva, the mariner felt a pang of guilt for having selfishly wanted such a thing.

Even so, he held back as the invitation was made to collect equipment. He wanted to see if there would be any arguing over the gear, just as on the Faldrass expedition, and he only realised he'd been holding his breath when no such situation eventuated.

Darius was one of the last to step forward and collect a satchel, and he was only just beginning to rummage through its contents when the first guides entered the room and began calling the names of those in their groups.

Yeva and Ari'sora's group would be with Jasper Seams, who Darius recognised from more than an arc earlier, though he wasn't sure if the professor remembered him. Either way, this interaction seemed much more professional than their first. At least there were no bananas within reach...

By the time Alison introduced herself, there was no doubt about who would be in the group she was leading. Darius had met Bao previously, and although he wasn't sure how the cadouri would fare on such an expedition, he knew even less about the others.

"Well met," he greeted Alison, Elijah, and Zoro. "I'm Darius Baer."

He laughed at the guide's unexpected jest, noting the misfortune of the name of their destination.

"Aye, does this make us knights errant, seeking Fool's Errand?" he chuckled at his own attempt, but his own humour was cut short be Zoro's sneezing fit.

When the young man appeared to have regathered himself, Darius looked over the map as he resumed his satchel rummaging, and his fingers settled upon something cold and unfamiliar. He pulled out what initially appeared to simply be a plain piece of metal, but upon turning it over, he saw his own reflection, and realised it was a mirror. Unable to resist, he bared his teeth, and rubbed a finger across the front ones to dislodge a small piece of food that had stubbornly made its home there.

"Now they're squeaky clean," he stated to nobody in particular.

At Alison's mention of cooking, Darius chuckled again.

"I'm no cook," he openly admitted. "I don't mind travel rations, though, if pressed. I'm used to sea travel, and you sometimes don't have many tasty options! To that end, I should be able to help us navigate the waters on the way to Fool's Errand, and I've climbed a piece of rigging or two, so hopefully the trees aren't too much more difficult."

He looked to Bao, then, for the cadouri was the most likely to be their best climber - even if it took every bit of willpower to resist asking if he could lift the furry creature up onto his shoulders.

Re: Sweetwine Song: Base Camp.

121 Ashan 721

There was something eerily familiar to the woman about the journey. While less nervous at her own ability than she had been the arc prior at Faldrass, she couldn't help but wonder if the ending of the day's adventure would end in tragedy. Throughout the speech from Kristoff Manyon, Yeva felt her stomach flipping.

Thankfully, she was not alone. Many familiar faces had signed up. She noticed the mage first. Yeva smiled and returned Balthazar's wave, slipping beside him with a sense of relief. They had their moments but more often than not, Yeva enjoyed Balthazar's company. He was observant; unconventional but hardworking. The last job they had worked together on had involved an erupting volcano and he seemed to be thinking similarly, his elbow poking into her arm, "Hopefully this goes better than the Faldrass expedition, right?"

The medic snorted at the coincidence. There was no denying that his words held true even if it was a grim memory. Yeva wasn't sure she could handle another island-wide catastrophe. She nudged him back, elbow bouncing against his side repeatedly, "Hopefully." then, with a deep breath, she shook her head, her next words a bit more serious, "No deaths this time." Speaking of which, maybe she could lighten the mood, "Balthazar," she whispered, hand covering her mouth as a mischievous smile began to upturn full lips, "Why did the ghost go into the bar?" Yeva paused, grin remaining as she stepped forward and grab her bag, amber eyes flashing in his direction. It was no secret the man enjoyed a strong drink, and she thought he might enjoy the punchline, "For the boos."

Chuckling, she looked up to see Darius not far away. There was also Oram and Ari'sora. Yeva scooted over to put offer more distance and busied herself with checking supplies. Water flask, dried food provisions, and a map, just as Ms. Du'Wintre claimed. What she hadn't expected to find was a pair of goggles made with a mix of leather, metal, and glass. The lenses themselves were not clear like spectacles, but faintly pink, like the soft petals of a spring rose.

"Hello," she lifted a hand, shyly stepping forward, "My name is Yeva of Rharne, I'm around 22 arcs old and my areas of expertise include research, medicine and the study of language, particularly in relation to the art of cryptography," Was there anyone in their group who knew of it? She searched their faces for recognition, "Which, is really just a fancy way of saying I break codes and solve puzzles. Not to be confused with cartography... which is actually a fairly common misconception".

Sometimes she never seemed to notice how heavy someone's gaze could be until she had many pairs on her at once. Yeva suddenly felt shy and had to remind herself why she was here.

Her other team members had up-sold themselves quite a bit, or at the very least were clear on the pros and cons of their involvement in the expedition, "I'm here today as a member of the Order of Adunih and the Intelligentsia, with personal interest to learn more about the area," she glanced at Jasper and then Shl'drei who both seemed to have ties to nature, even if they were on opposite ends of the skill spectrum, "Outside of some gardening and alchemy, I have very little knowledge about the wilderness... Although I have read excerpts from Smooglenuff's Guide To The Flora & Fauna of Scalvoris: Volume 5 and Leslie Breumoi's Herbalist Handbook. If any of you know where I could find volumes one through four... Please, let me know. Hm, I've been known to be a bit erudite, so just shoosh me if you have to. My feelings will be hurt," she smiled at her group, making a reference to Jasper's introduction with a bit of truth of her own. She was sensitive, whether that was a strength or weakness remained to be seen, "But it won't get in the way of my work. Anyway, it's very nice to meet you all. Um..."

Yeva shuffled her feet, wrinkling her nose. Her face was starting to feel warm and she chewed her lip, "That's all." she turned, "Oh!" Liar, "Sorry - I forgot to ask: Professor," she turned to face their guide, hand itching to get her notebook. She looked down at the more detailed map and found Widow's Valley, studying its visualization, "You mentioned not much is known about the area... May I ask what is?"

Sweetwine Song: Thread Review

Overview

Because of PC-driven actions, this thread can not be completed. The storyline for the "War of Slags Deep" simply overtook this and - since Scalvoris is then in a deep freeze from the 30th - 38th - AND people are going to Sweetwine to potentially free the Induk, I feel that the only appropriate solution here is to cut short these threads. There will be another "Sweetwine Song" event - after everything has been finished with the Egilrun War.

If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a PM. Thank you, and sincere apologies for cutting short a seasonal event.

In terms of this event being caononical, we can't assume that - so please feel free to assume that you did a small exploration for the University - and met the people you met here. Basically, consider that it did happen, but not like this / this big. Hope that works for everyone and thank you for your patience.

Included in this is the loot of your basic equipment / bag. Your unusual item is also fine to keep but it is a mundane / non magical thing.

You may also choose up to 5 non-skill knowledge on each PC / NPC in the thread.

Kalortah, Shl'drei, Oram, Balthazar, Elijah, Bao, Zoro, Alyssia, Darius, Yeva
