[Lysoria] Apple, Part 2

Ashan 35, Arc 697

"Lord Victor, it’s time for your riding lesson!"
Mistress Jeanette, Victor’s riding instructor, a human woman in her thirties with blonde hair that she wore in a bun and dark brown eyes told the young noble. Said young noble was currently lying on his belly in his fancy four-poster bed, reading a book of very simple fairy tales in Rakahi which was a bit of a struggle (the grammar was different from his native Common, although Victor didn’t know much about grammar at his age; to him, Rakahi was just more or less just weird).

When he heard the woman speak, he abruptly slammed the book shut and jumped up, a wide smile on his face. He loved riding. He had learned to ride approximately an arc earlier, and while he had never gotten as good as his brother (who he was always being compared to, even though they didn’t have much in common) he did manage to stay in the saddle most of the time these trials. Sometimes, Apple, the black and white pony that he usually rode, even moved in the direction that he wanted her to move in which was great!

Once he had put his shiny black riding boots and a nice jacket on (Mistress Jeanette insisted that he wear a jacket as it was still a little cool outside around this time of the arc), the little lord was ready to go and followed his instructor through the fortress with a spring in his step and a grin, much to the amusement of the various servants that they passed by.

Before long, they were in the stable, and Victor fed Apple a carrot (in spite of her name, the little mare preferred those particular vegetables), and then he grabbed the reins and tried to mount her, with little success. Once Mistress Jeanette helped him a little, he managed to get into the saddle though, and then he pushed his feet into Apple’s sides, and soon they were on their way out of the stable and went on one of their tours of the fortress grounds that he loved so much. Mistress Jeanette rode next to him, on her own horse, but she watched him closely so that she would be able to intervene at a moment’s notice, and occasionally she told him what he was doing wrong and corrected him.

They were moving at just a little above a snail’s pace, but Victor wasn’t aware of that. In his opinion, they were riding really fast, and it was so much fun, and he couldn’t wait until he was finally old enough to accompany his father and his brother on one of their hunting trips.

Maybe he’d shoot a bear!

They had bears in the forest outside of Lysoria, right?

Re: [Lysoria] Apple, Part 2

Victor’s trial was filled with all kinds of different activities, from morning to evening, in spite of the fact that he still had not reached his tenth arc yet. He had etiquette lessons, politics lessons, dancing lessons (he hated those, he just wasn’t very graceful!). And then there were language lessons, mathematics lessons, history lessons and a wide variety of other things that his parents considered to be necessary for a noble to know. And he wasn’t even the heir!

Sometimes, he wondered how many more lessons his older brother had to endure because he would take over one trial and pitied him, but most of the time he was just frustrated because he could never do what he wanted. There was always more work, and if he complained, someone was bound to mention his duties (that also included getting married and continuing the family one trial, even though he couldn’t even imagine kissing a girl!).

After lunch that he ate in the dining room at a huge table, even though it was just Stefan, their parents and him, he had a class on foreign politics (because being familiar with Lysorian politics was apparently not enough). Most of his classes took place in the library. His politics tutor was named Cecilia, and she was an older human woman with grey hair that she wore in a thick braid and equally grey eyes (her skin was rosy rather than grey though).

“So, Rynmere”,
Cecilia said and looked at Victor who was sitting opposite of her, at the big table, a notebook in front of him and a quill in his hand (he was not very good at writing with a quill which was of course why she insisted that he needed to practice with one; as a noble, he needed to write in style). “Rynmere is ruled by a king or a queen. In addition to that, there are seven noble houses, Andaris, Venora, Krome, Burhan, Gawyne, Endor and … what is the seventh noble house, Lord Victor? Do you know? Lord Victor?” she repeated when he didn’t answer immediately.

Victor looked up from his notebook in which he was secretly working on a very crude drawing of a horse rather than writing about foreign politics (because he couldn’t stop thinking about Apple), looked at her in confusion for a moment, as if she had been speaking in tongues, and guessed, “Luther?” He was pretty sure that he had heard that name before, when someone had discussed the recent developments in Rynmere, so it was a noble house, right?

“No, Lord Victor”, Cecilia replied. She sounded a bit disappointed. “Luther is not simply a noble house. The Luthers rule Rynmere. The seventh noble house is called Warrick. Please write that down, Lord Victor. I will ask you about it again tomorrow. Now, let’s talk about the noble houses of Rynmere in more detail. They are all a bit different from each other”, she continued, and Victor let out a loud sigh.

“By the way, Lord Victor”,
Cecilia told him just a few moments later and looked at his masterpiece that he’d tried to hide from her disapprovingly. “I would greatly appreciate it if you could stop drawing now. Your next arts lesson is still three trials away.”

Re: [Lysoria] Apple, Part 2

As a grown man, Victor would often think about those trials with a kind of wistfulness and wish for them to return. His life had seemed so simple back then, and happy and carefree. He had used to hate his lessons, but looking back, he realized that they had been necessary, and that his teachers had, for the most part, meant well and not been sadistic. He even wished that he had made more of an effort when it came to his dancing lessons.

There had been several occasions when knowing how to dance well would have been useful.

Back then, over twenty arcs earlier, his parents had still been alive and well (they had died when he had just been a teenager, and quite unexpectedly at that), and he had adored his older brother and looked up to him rather than hating him with a passion because he had ordered his lover’s execution (Stefan had changed after their parents had died).

He had not been forced to make any hard decisions either. There had been some talk about his duties, but in hindsight, it had not been as bad as what had come later (and there had of course not been a mage prison).

Eight arc old (minus a few trials) Victor was not happy, and he did not consider himself blessed or anything like that though. He was just in a bad mood because after all those lessons he had to do his homework even though he just wanted to go outside and ride Apple some more. Maybe he could just do his homework really quickly though? He thought about that for a few moments before he realized that his teachers would probably notice if he did his homework in a hurry. They always did. And besides, mother and father would be sad.

He didn’t want them to be sad though. Even though his parents were often much too busy with politics for his taste and made him learn all those things, he loved them with all of his heart. So, he continued to write, and he even tried to not make too much of a mess with his quill, even though it was really hard (the thing refused to do what he wanted, and he just never seemed to be able to get enough ink into it, no matter what he did).

Finally, he was done though, slammed the notebook that he always had to write his homework in shut with all of the strength that he could muster up (which was not a lot of strength) and made his way to his father’s office. He’d considered just sneaking out of the fortress, but the last time he had tried that, there had been a lot of guards, and he had gotten into a lot of trouble. So, he would beg his father to let him spend more time with Apple instead. It was already almost evening (but not quite late enough for dinner yet), so Lord Amielle was probably not as busy with politics and such anymore, right?

Comments: I enjoy a trip through a character's memory lane, and this one did not disappoint. Mistress Jeanine is a very nice woman and teacher, and it's no wonder he enjoys spending more time with Apple instead of studying politics with Miss Cecilia.

I honestly hope to see more threads in this vein with Victor, as I've become pretty invested in the relationship he had with his pony. Maybe a proper conclusion would be a fun way to bring it to a close, or continuing it for a while before getting to that point.

Great writing, enjoy the rewards.
