Obriviyanah finds Zihaqihs lost in the Crystal Forest.

31st of Saun 711

The crystal city of Uleuda is accessed from the minds of the Yludih. A safe haven from the persecution suffered in Idalos, Uleuda provides a place for Yludih to learn about their people from the Ancients, congregate together about the light bringing crystal Yldria, and begin the process of unlocking their 'gates' to eternal life.

31st of Saun
Arc 711
(Obriviyanah: age 14)
(Zihaqihs: age 11)

It was quieter here.

In Uleuda, it was quiet everywhere. Hidden within shared Yludih mindscape, their sanctuary city was a dazzling, crystalline place that would still the heart of any poet. Winding continuously through the diamond spires was a persistent song of slow, percussive chimes. Meanwhile, its people moved along in slow, uneasy rhythms. Each of them were crafted of the same glimmering crystal as the structures in they built together.

Several times, Ylanikinteh had taken Obriviyanah on awkward tours through the city, introducing him to older Yludih. Most looked very much the same. Others were shrouded and deeply colorful.

He thought it was strange that in the waking world they each had so many faces, but in this one, it was difficult to tell them apart.

But mostly it was quieter here, in the Crystal Forest beyond the amphitheatre. Obriviyanah sat on the long, smooth incline of a gigantic jutting crystal shard. He gazed out over the hatched skyline of the landscape into the black of the nothingness beyond.

He wasn’t sure how long he’d been reclining here. A few hours maybe?

The Yludih, he had quickly learned, were a people of suffering. Most had lost close family, others were rejected or betrayed by those they trusted. Although Obriviyanah had watched the murder of his own mother, a story he was reluctant to tell, it seemed not to matter here. His tragedy was only another drop in the well.

Well, so what? He had nothing to prove. He didn’t want sympathy, nor did he have the energy to sympathize with anyone else. Obriviyanah felt just as alone here as he did in the waking world.

At least he did, until his solitude was interrupted by a small voice piercing through the soft din of gentle chiming.

Obriviyanah ignored it at first, not certain what he was hearing.

“Mom?”

Mom?

Obriviyanah propped himself up on an elbow and leaned over the side of the crystal he’d perched on. A little Yludih wandered beneath him, twisting around frantically as she searched the diamond maze around them.

“Mother?”

“You shouldn’t wander out here too far,” Obriviyanah called down from his ledge. “Not that it’s dangerous, but the nothingness is…”

Well, he didn’t know. But it felt unsafe.

Obriviyanah pushed himself up, rolled onto his knees at the edge of his platform, and then dropped down to the ground below. The force of the impact threw him to one knee, but it only hurt a little.

“Ow.” He stood up and dusted himself off. As if there was anything to dust. “Are you lost?”

ih frowned at her father, something she tried not to do but when he shook his head she couldn't help it. It wasn't often he denied her things but he was denying her this. But she couldn't understand why or why he looked as frustrated as she felt.

"I said no."

"But if we find her-"

"Not this trial, Zihaqihs."

T
he Yludih girl stiffened but did not ask again, watching her fathers shoulder relax as he walked away to speak with someone else. He never had answered her questions, not that day and not an arc later. It felt like it was a hammer, chipping away at her every time he gave her no answers. Zih wasn't angry with him per se, but but the small well of darkness in the pit of her stomach wanted to swallow her whole when they just waited endlessly with her mother no where. The same darkness that pulled her from her fathers footpath, back the way they came with a strange urgency. Passed the walls and into the tall outlier of crystals, maybe her mother hadn't reached the city yet. Maybe the strained panic in her fathers voice behind her was encouragement. Maybe it wasn't the pounding of her pulse in her own ears around her as she called out.

"Mom!"

T
here was nothing but a blur of crystal as she raced through, legs burning until she slowed, the echoes of her fathers distant voice too far away to push her own. Was she running from him or to her mother? Did it matter? Why had no one-not a one-helped them find her? Why wasn't Zih allowed to find her?

"Mother!"

H
er voice cracked on the last one as she both stumbled, and there was nothing but the echo of her own voice at first. It was only the echo of the second set of words that made her turn, for a moment, even though she didn't recognize the voice, Zih seen her mother. Arms open, no strangers using her face, nothing to bar the older from the younger. But this Yludih was too small, not as small as her but far from the adult or color her mother was. The shock of someone, not the someone she wanted made her lips tremble, voice like grating rock as she stepped away from the boy.

"Y-you're not my mom." The accusing words weren't what she meant to say, and she shook her head as her voice wobbled even more. "I d-don't think I'm lost."

A
nd she didn't care if she was. Maybe her mother was lost too. Maybe that's why she couldn't come home and her father never answered. Something to quell the crystalline tears that threatened to spill as she regarded the other child with wide eyes. She wanted to tell then it was her mother who was lost, wanted to tell them anything but the words stuck in her throat like grit. If there were people she couldn't have gone far enough to find anyone but-

"D-do you-can you help me?"

H
er parents always told her to be unmemorable but they'd never mentioned with their own, and right now she didn't care. Maybe he'd seen her mother. Maybe he knew the forest. So many maybes but the darkness in her stomach swallowed them hopeful maybes up like it was starved, leaving her trembling slightly as she stood and likely looking very much like she'd either shatter or collapse at any moment.

Re: As is the mother, so is her daughter.

The small Yludih stared up at him. Sweet. Diminutive. Vulnerable. All the things Obriviyanah had forgotten how to be.

“Y-you’re not my mom.”

Obriviyanah gave a ghostly smile as he knelt down to get closer to her level. He rested his arms on his thighs, balancing on the balls of his crystalline feet.

“No I’m not. Sorry about that.”

He gave the girl a quick onceover. Uleuda was a bizarre place in the perspective of fleshy mortals. Everything glimmered, transparent translucent, opaline, and multi-faceted. It did not follow the same rules as the true, waking world. But from what he could observe from his native Yludih perspective, the girl didn’t seem to be harmed.

She didn’t think she was lost, she said. Obriviyanah doubted her honesty, but if she wasn’t lost, her mother must have been.

“I haven’t seen anyone out here but me.” He nodded at her. “And you. I’m Obri, so you know. What is your name?”

Obriviyanah pushed himself back up to his feet. He rubbed at his translucent neck as he cast a quick survey of their surroundings. All the Yludih within Uleuda, as far as he knew, were back within the walls of the city proper.

“D-do you—can you help me?”

He turned to the girl again, smiling broadly once more. It felt nice to smile, even if it was just a show for someone else.

“Course I can.”

He offered out his glimmering hand for her to take.

“Come on. When was the last time you saw your mom? Where would she have gone?”

Yludih child was unlike a human one but Zih wasn't sure if her families rules still applied and at that moment she didn't care. If it found her mom she was sure she'd be forgiven, she might even get praised for thinking outside the box. After all, she couldn't ask non-Yludih. And if her father wasn't going to help her then someone would have to, her mother wasn't just gone and Zih knew it. She had to be somewhere becasue the alternative...

"N-no one? Are you s-sure?" Her hiccups came now, eyes falling away from him as if she could find her the moment the little Yludih looked away. When he introduced herself, her eyes flicked back, surprised. Manner were one thing but her parents never had her introduce herself. Names were note-worthy. It took her several seconds to try and figure out what she was supposed to do in response, even longer when he held out his hand. Other children did this, not her. But her fathers hand was not there and it'd been so long since it'd been her mothers. And he was bigger than her, bigger Yludih knew things. They had to. "Z-Zihaqihs."

W
hen she finally took his hand she gripped it tightly, not so much out of confidence but with the realization of a few things. He might ditch her there, and she could likely run back the way she came except...she didn't know which way that was, and two was that she was suddenly very, very nervous. Her legs shook and even her hand shook in his, his words ringing in her ears strangely before she looked away, unable to say the words to his face. As if, when she said the words out loud it would both make them true and might make him take back his offer to help her find her mother. Still, they were hard to press out, and she choked on the silence several times before finally speaking.

"In...Ashan."

Z
ih conviently left out that it had been the previous arcs Ashan. And that her mother used to visit the Uleuda every trial and had not been seen in so many Zih had lost count, only watching the season pass, each digging a little deeper into the pit on her stomach. Widening it until it could swallow her whole. The last question was entirely ignored because the truth was, she didn't know. Her mother was her mother, where would she go but home? But she wasn't home or in the Uleuda or anywhere within the Yludihs small grasp. Every trial of her life her mother had been there and now she wasn't. And the image of a slightly older version of her mother, who had very much not been her, seemed to glimmering off the crystals of the forest, making her press closer to Obri. In the distance she thought she heard the voice of her father but she didn't want to go back to his silence and the others who patted her head but wouldn't tell her anything. It her chest ache to think about but she tried to force it down even as more words bubbled up, confused, she couldn't get her body to do what she wanted. To move or speak and it was frightening. Like watching someone else move her.

"She's l-lost." Her voice shattered like glass. A scream that wasn't quite reaching the surface. "She went t-t-to get tomatoes."

Re: As is the mother, so is her daughter.

"N-no one? Are you s-sure?"

"Yeah. Sorry, kiddo."

It had been a long while since Obriviyanah was around other children. In another life, he ran with a small cabal of human, Ithecalian, and Biqaji friends, most of them as poor and hard done by as he was. Although not the fastest or the strongest, he'd easily been the most charismatic among them, and thought of himself as their de facto leader. It was always Rolysseus who invested in their collective curiosity and led them on their misadventures into the odd corners of Rharne. His own mother had still been alive, then.

When she at last told him the truth about what they really were—shapeshifters hiding among common folk—he had withdrawn entirely from the rest of the world. It had turned everything he believed himself to be into a lie. His origins, his religion, his future aspirations, his identity, his very name. All into dust.

He had been thirteen at the time, but he felt like his childhood had ended on the day he learned he was Yludih. Rolysseus had refused to meet with his friends after that. He wouldn't talk to them, and after a while, they stopped coming round to ask for him. That life was done.

"Z-Zihaqihs."

"Zihaqihs," Obriviyanah echoed back with a nod. The Yludih language was so cumbersome. "That's a heavy name for someone so small. May I call you Zizi?"

Meeting Zihaqihs felt like opening a window back into that old life again. He remembered what it was to bond with and care about others. To see someone so in need of compassion and a guiding hand. Obriviyanah felt a wave of grief come over him. He missed his old friends. He missed who he used to be.

She clutched at his hand desperately. She seemed as lost and alone as he once felt.

As he watched, Zihaqihs was having trouble finding her voice. The words were choking off in her throat. This wasn't right. Lost children were upset, but she looked completely overwhelmed. There was something else at work here. Obriviyanah patiently waited for her to speak, gently lighting his hand on her other shoulder.

"In...Ashan."

"Ashan?"

Cripes. That was awhile ago. Obriviyanah thought maybe it had been a break or two since she found herself on her own. This wasn't just a misplaced child, it may well have been an orphaned one.

Another one. Curse the world.

"She's l-lost. She went t-t-to get tomatoes."

"I see." This was beginning to look like a lost cause. Still, the girl needed company. "Well, let's look around. Maybe we'll find a clue. You lead the way, kiddo." He squeezed her hand back. "I'll stay with you, alright?"

At least he could stay long enough for her to calm down a little. If her mother had been missing for two seasons though, they probably had roughly the same chance of finding his mother. The important thing was to give her company and comfort. Uleuda was the only place where Yludih didn't need to feel isolated. And besides, the crystal forest was pretty. He didn't mind wandering it.

"So, Zizi..." Obriviyanah asked as they began to weave through the tree-sized crystals jutting up from the opaline earth beneath them. "Who's been looking after you? Your dad around?"

hen he said he had not seen anyone else her face fell more. It made sense, logically she hadn't seen her mother since the previous arc, for her to be wandering so close to the city and never be seen by friends or family couldn't happen, right? But it still hurt to know she had not been seen at all. There were too many possibilities that way, many that the young Yludih couldn't and wouldn't let dwell in her head though they screamed the loudest and were only broken by his nickname. She glanced up at him in confusion, not really understanding what he meant by heavy, it was a word so how could it be heavy? But she nodded slowly.

"Mhmm." Something that had built up in her chest released ever so slightly when he didn't let go of her hand. If her dad wouldn't help her look, then Obri would. The thought of finding nothing was a looming space in front of her literally and figuratively but she pulled gently and headed off deeper into the forest of rocks and crystals. Each shadow caught her attention but her mothers face never peeked out, her shoulders hunching even as she struggled to stay focused. "I..."

F
or a moment she trailed off, unsure of how to answer that. If he wanted to know of the quiet that fell over the house, of the things no one said, of the long days without her mother home, of the comfortable, empty seclusion of the water, of the hours of napping to sit in the Uleuda napping. Or if he meant that she was an orphan, or if she only felt like one some trials. The question didn't have one answer, not one she could articulate, unsure of what he meant and her own feelings.

"Y-yes. My dad. He...d-doesn't want to look...this t-trial."

S
lowly she began to move quicker, trying to throw the words behind and as if she could still hear her fathers voice in the distance, the word "no" ringing in her ear like an endless echo. Did he not want to find mom? A dark question she often shoved down, right along with: did he care? Why didn't he talk about her? Why wouldn't he tell Zih anything? And so many others like it. Instead she gazed out with determination, but it lacked any hope or fire, just nerves and energy. Desperation evident in her speed-walk that was nearing speeds of a jog, the only thing stopping her from outright sprinting was the hand wrapped around her own. A link back to common sense.

"Yanah. M-moms name is Yanah." Hesitantly she elaborated. "If...if you seen her or-or maybe heard her name b-b-before?"

Carefully she glanced at the other, stumbling a bit from trying to keep pace and stare up at him. As if she could find the truth in face rather than his words, as if, if she looked hard enough he'd give her the answer she wanted.

Re: As is the mother, so is her daughter.

Obriviyanah allowed Zihaqihs to lead him on the cold trail of her missing mother. She was probably dead. Yludih seemed abnormally inclined toward untimely ends. However, the young girl was obviously not ready to accept that reality, and it wasn’t his place to push it on her. She needed compassion and company more than she needed the truth.

At least, that’s what he felt after his mother had left him forever.

"Y-yes. My dad. He...d-doesn't want to look...this t-trial."

Aelig’s balls, thank the stars. She still had at least one parent around. That was a relief. She was far too young to be out on her own already. Although, the verbage she used… her dad didn’t want to look? Was this the fanciful rambling of a shattered young mind or was there something more going on here?

Gad this was starting to get complicated. One thing at a time, Obriviyanah. This was none of his business, and it was better not to get too deeply involved. Yludih all lived very strange lives, he was coming to learn.

"Yanah. M-moms name is Yanah. If...if you seen her or-or maybe heard her name b-b-before?"

That was a pretty bad stutter. Obriviyanah wondered if it had something to do with her obvious anguish. He made a note to ask Tobias about stutters later. He seemed to know about things like that.

“Well…”

Yanah was the Ulehi word for one. It was a common element in Yludih names. His own name, in fact.

“I don’t really talk to anyone here very often.” It was the kindest answer he could think of for her. “Much less ask their names. So I really couldn’t tell you. I guess it won’t help to ask what she looks like.”

Actually it might. Older Yludih usually had some color to them, or other unusual flourishes, but like most dead Yludih, she had probably died before her time.

“Tell me about your dad.” As Zihaqihs slowed, so did Aiden. She seemed unsure. “Let’s talk while we check that clearing over there. Why doesn’t he want to look for your mom? Is he mad at her?”

ih blinked. It hadn't occurred to her that others might not talk with people as well, that they might stay quiet and prefer to be away from everyone. She once more looked deep into his face, momentarily distracted from the search, before staring hard into the crystals around them. As if she could change their reflections into her mother and feel-

"N-no." She paused, voice soft, almost a whisper. "M-mom had color. S-some...it was p-p-pink."

I
t was almost enough to send her to her knees, the pit inside her stomach waiting to consume her until there was nothing left but when he offered the clearing she latched onto it. A wave of adrenaline spurred to to near try dragging him to the clearing. Like it would be easy as finding her mother right inside, sitting and waiting. But his question slowed her, made her stiffen a bit. Once more the dark pit bubbled up before something like shock made it fade to background noise.

"I-he-no!"

T
he outburst surprised even her before she calmed herself. But his questions dug hooks into her mind, questions she tried not to think about coming to the surface once more. Obri may be right. What if her dad wanted her mom to leave? What if that's why she left? What if he didn't want to look becuase he was made she left? What if he didn't want to look because she was de-

"He...d-dad is sad." Zih thought to her own quiet loneliness in the house, imagined her father sitting like he did sometimes when she got home. Still and in the dark. Her breathing hitched. "She...mom, s-she's been gone for a-a-a long time. Since A-a-shan in, um...710. B-but I know h-he wants to l-l-find her! We n-need her!"

S
he rushed the end as the entered the clearing, trying to cover her slip of the year in an avalanche of more words. People never wanted to help once they knew, their gazes turning into helpless, useless pity, the same gaze her father had some days. Though his often mingled with hurt. Zih could guess why but she couldn't put it to words, and she loved him but she couldn't stop the way she felt. Releasing Obri's hand she ran around the clearing, and from a different viewpoint, it might almost look like she was playing. Peeking behind every crystal no matter how large or small until there was little left for her to look through. Chest heaving she looked to Obri, feeling her throat tighten around the words.

"I w-won't find her...will I-I?"

Re: As is the mother, so is her daughter.

Obriviyanah jogged with Zihaqihs as she pulled him closer to the clearing, but when she slowed, it was all he could do to stare at her in confusion.

There was a struggle on the young Yludih’s face, as if she didn’t quite understand the emotions she was wrestling with. Obriviyanah couldn’t be much help on that front. Feelings had never been his strong point. He just tried to get a smile out of others and hoped that was enough.

"I-he-no!"

“Hey, hey.” He withdrew his hand from hers and instead pet her young head, trying to remind her that he was still there. “You alright, kiddo?”

She tried to explain something about her father, but clearly there was more going on in her thoughts than she was able to express. Through her stutter, the words seemed difficult to get out. It was piteous, but more than that, Obriviyanah was beginning to suspect she was severely abused.

And then came the real revelation: this girl’s mother had been missing for over a year. Obriviyanah felt his asterism drop. They were looking for shadows. Either Zihaqihs’ mother was dead, or she didn’t want to be found.

“Ashan in… when? Zizi...”

At first Obriviyanah wondered if Zihaqihs’ mother was similar to his own father, who simply left and never came back. Perhaps having a child was too much for her, or she had bigger things to worry about. The father may have been abusive. Or she could have just been a heartless cur. Yludih came in all the same terrible varieties as humans and other races.

Zihaqihs rushed forward into the clearing, but Obriviyanah had lost his enthusiasm for the search. He walked up slowly behind her, watching her search through the crystalline clearing. Coming upon a central, opalline rock, he leaned against it and folded his arms.

There was nothing he could do for her.

"I w-won't find her...will I-I?"

“I don’t think so, kiddo.” Might as well be straight with her. He struggled for a moment, trying to imagine what he might have wanted to hear in her place. “But wherever she is… she wishes she could see you. If she’s been gone that long… it must be a really good reason.”

Obriviyanah tapped his foot. There was nothing he could do… but he couldn’t just stand by.

“Your dad… is he mean to you? Was he mean to your mom?”

or one long moment she stared at him, lips trembling then shook her head, eyes squeezed shut to ignore the truth. Behind her eyelids there was nothing but darkness, the same darkness that always rose up to suffocate her. Persistent, lingering, deep within her as she floated above the surface of it. A terrifying part of her wanted to lash out, at what she didn't know, but her fists clenched painfully. The little Yludih needed something more than okay because even if her mom came back there was the horrible thought that nothing would be the same. Or the darker thoughts that she hadn't wanted Zih. Hadn't wanted either her or her dad, that it had been her choice. Her throat stuck closed unable to voice the answers to the questions Obri was asking. She wanted to rip the thoughts from her head and her words out of her throat but her body refused to obey, instead shaking with the ferocity of her emotions as if it would shatter her.

A
nd his final question did break her. Ringing throughout the clearing, her eyes snapping open she stomped her foot, fists tightening to where in her mind she could hear them crack, feel it creep all the way up until all of her was cracked and distorted like the voice that ripped from her throat. Hoarse and confused, and just as broken as the fantasy cracks.

"No!" She frowned at the ground, picturing her mother then her father in front of her. "M-mom is b-b-mean to me! She...she l-left me! She left d-d-daddy! She w-w-didn't say goodbye a-a-and now he w-won't talk to me, nobody e-e-e-e-"

Z
ih broke off with a loud hiccup, her fists uncurling to press tightly against her face as if she could stop everything from coming out. She felt light-headed and out of the breath, the final word still got in her throat as small gasps left her. Her legs shook until they couldn't support the weight of her, collapsing onto her backside in the clearing thought she never tried to catch herself. Barely even felt the fall, still struggling to get out the word and the breathe. But for once her mind was quiet, there were no more thoughts, only the loudest screaming in her ears that she wasn't sure if it was her actually screaming or just in her head.
