Bio
In some other age, Tobias Acothley was a doting husband and father to three daughters, heavily involved with foreign trade and the patriarch of his family. With his family he was warm, supportive, and devoted (also terrifying to the men who courted his daughters). In business he was ruthlessly efficient, pragmatic, and often unscrupulous. After the untimely death of his eldest daughter and an altercation with her husband that led to a broken arm, he dove deeper and recklessly into his work.
It was ultimately his grief-driven fervor that led to his inescapable involvement with the Shadow Quarter. In order to protect his family, he severed himself from them and went on a live alone, dedicating himself entirely, if begrudgingly, to the servitude of this new master.
Personality
Tobias might never be described as a pleasant man, but he is above all a man who always honors his word. Although he nurses a deep anger and sorrow over his lost daughter, he is shrewdly principled, following a strict code of ethics. This is possibly what has kept him in control of his faculties, despite the spark in him trying to feed his darker impulses. Although he at times seems morally ambiguous, or even evil, he is prone to rare moments of mercy, especially when faced with suffering innocents.
Impact
Whether his masters are criminal, political, or private, he is a loyal servant. As long as his duties do not involve the harm of innocents, he is willing to go where he is needed depending on the agenda of his faction. To his enemies, he is a true nightmare. Not because of his sheer magical power, but because of his unerring determination and cunning. He prefers to eschew conflict in favor of a Machiavellian approach.
Tobias resides in a small shack at the foot of a wheat field in Caerville Town, where he writes coded letters to his correspondents.
Mage/Mentor Relationship
While he was not actively seeking a student at the time Obri sought him as a teacher, Tobias took pity on the youth and took him under his wing out of parental concern. He not only recognized the grief in Obriviyanah, but felt the adoption of a ward would improve his public image as an avuncular figure, if severe, instead of a mysterious old man. Obri sought power to take revenge on the people of Rharne, but Tobias was determined to nurse this desire out of Obri and teach him how to wield power responsibly, else that power might control him.
The most important element between Obri and Tobias is that both of them, for different reasons, are living in hiding.
Obri, who at the time was using the alias Aiden, was drawn to Tobias because he sought power over his enemies. Tobias saw this and, while he could have killed Obri on the spot or sent him away, took pity on him as a lonely and frightened child in need of guidance.
What developed was a complicated father/son-like relationship. Tobias briefly took on the role of mentor and parent to Obri, and Obri soothed Tobias's sorrow for his missed children. However, Tobias was a strict and unforgiving teacher, who mostly sent Obri on errands or instructed him to do chores around his house. It was on rare, quiet nights when Tobias would thrust Obri into lessons of necromancy. These were harsh and dangerous for Obri, in order to either scare him out of the idea of ever using magic, or to inspire him to be more powerful than the spark that would nest inside of his soul. Although Tobias knew different magicks, he only taught Obriviyanah Necromancy.
Ultimately, over the course of almost two years, Tobias came upon the knowledge that Obri was not human, but Yludih. Although he still felt affection for the boy, he upset by this revelation and feared what consequences this could bring upon him and his work, as well as the danger this posed to Obri if Tobias was ever discovered by his enemies. Sternly, he ordered that Obri leave and never return. He gave the boy some money and supplies for his journey, and then shut his door to Obriviyanah forever.
