History

"This is the darkness. This is the end. You little mortals that cling to the light, feel now the fate that befalls all life."

Even among the other dragons Deobrutoa was always trouble. He was one of the earliest dragons, created by the verses to represent the natural end of all life they had created, though right from the beginning it was clear that Deobrutoa held no respect for any other living creature than himself. He arrogantly believed that since he was the representative of death he could never be killed by a creature born of Idalos die, or that since death was an inevitable part of life he would not die until the very last living thing on Idalos died with him. Nor did he believe that anything could bind him down or enslave him, and even though he fought on the Verses side in their wars not once did he ever consider himself a servant of theirs. He was arrogant, spiteful and cruel, and spoke down to the other dragons as if they were his slaves.

In his defence this arrogance was not without foundation. Deabrutoa was one of the most fearsome forces in the war against the Discordant; not because he was any more skilled or powerful than his kin, but simply because he could not be bound nor dealt a fatal blow. His natures of death and bonds made him immune to any attempt by creatures of Idalos, including the Discordant and their creations, to capture or kill him. He could attack with wanton abandon, secure in the knowledge that when he tired he could simply fly away and try again later. As such he treated the war like an amusement, and mocked the dragons who lost their lives in the conflict.

This rotten personality eventually proved to be not only Deabrutoa's undoing, but one of the sparks that caused the history of Idalos as we know it to unfold the way it did. When the Originals arrived on Idalos Deabrutoa was the first dragon to cross paths with them, and on some malicious whim he decided to try and kill these intruders without even giving them a chance to communicate, secure in his believed invincibility. This proved to be one of the biggest mistakes in history. He was not strong enough to defeat even one of the Originals, let alone all eight, and relying solely on his natural immunity in the previous war had made Deabrutoa a sloppy and unskilled warrior. To say that Anox wiped the floor with him was an understatement. The fight was short, brutal and bloody, and by the end Anox had taken no more damage than a few bruises. However Deabrutoa's foolishness doomed more than just himself. The other Originals had watched the whole thing, and Anox used Deabrutoa's actions as evidence that the dragons were just savage beasts that Idalos would be better off without. Thus Originals like Luesco, who likely wouldn't have ever condoned the slaughter of the dragons if they knew the truth, were roped into the great war that would see the spirits overthrown and the Originals as rulers of Idalos.

Yet in an ironic way Deabrutoa's early demise turned out to be a form of salvation for him. Since he died before the creation of the Immortals his soul was not captured and imprisoned upon death, and so even as his body sunk down into the ground beneath where Quacia now stands Deabrutoa was slowly beginning the process of rebirth. The process was immensely slow, taking hundreds of years, and would have taken hundreds more were it not for a stroke of luck.

In arc 413 the city of Quacia, which had grown above Deabrutoa's resting place, experienced the event it called "The Cataclysm." Deabrutoa did not have any part in triggering this event, but it benefitted him greatly. The vast quantity of death occurring right above his head fed him with power, and caused his sleeping soul to begin to stir. In the chaos of the cataclysm his soul brushed against a few of the panicked Quacian citizens above, sharing brief flashes of his memories. After the cataclysm those people began to speak to anyone who would listen, and soon a cult to this "Wounded God" sprung to life. The cultists offered blood sacrifices in his name, and each one accelerated Deabrutoa's revival even further. After over 300 years of feeding on offered blood Deabrutoa was nearly fully healed again, and then Kata made her fateful grab for power.

During the chaos that would become known as Ruin's Dawn, Deabrutoa was awoken and freed, but only for a brief moment. With the help of Padraig Augustin's Barrier Domain, a trio of Immortals sealed him beneath Quacia, stopping him for a time. Now Deabrutoa has sworn revenge on Vri, Famula, and Moseke, but he cannot escape on his own. But there are forces that will want him freed, and he knows that all he has to do is be patient. He is inevitable, and he will be free.

Personality

Even among dragons, Deabrutoa's stubbornness and arrogance is legendary. Surprisingly he is a great believer in freedom, even going so far as to claim that it is the most important quality a being can possess, yet also believes that the only way one can be truly free is when everything and everyone around them is under their total control, for it is only then that one can do whatever they wish without consequence. With that belief set it is little wonder that he is not just rude and domineering, but is proud to be so.

Usually Deabrutoa possesses a conceited calm, born from the belief that his natural abilities make him impossible to defeat and that his long lifespan has made him smarter than everyone else. However his last memory before awakening was of dying to Anox's hand. He missed war of the Originals, the creation of the Immortals and all the rest of history up to his awakening, and is thus ignorant of everything to do with mortal society, technology and religion. Any mention of anything that highlights this gap in his knowledge infuriates him greatly. Yet not as much as any mention of Anox does; for Anox not only killed him, but humiliated him more than any other being before ever had. Deabrutoa is obsessed to the point of madness with getting revenge on Anox, but in the absence of the Original himself has targeted his grudge against the Immortals he created and the mortalborn they have sired. Anything that reminds him of Anox, even the slightest similarity to his scent, drives Deabrutoa to a frenzied rage.

Appearance

Deabrutoa is the same great height as the rest of his race, though he is more slender and less muscular than most other dragons. His scales are shimmering black, and the webbing of his wing are the same rich blood crimson as the line running up from his throat to his chin, and the tips of the parallel lines of horns running down from the back of his head to his shoulders. All along from his spine to his tail are dull grey plates of bone armour.
