23rd of Vhalar 720

The untamed wilderness of Melrath is vast and encompasses frigid mountain ranges, glacial fields, deep alpine lakes, dark ancient forests as well as the expansive shoreline of the nation. Here creatures and spirits dwell together in the remote places of the world, far from the hustle and bustle of civilization.

Kidnapping of Svaria and Myrvia

23rd Vhalar 720 – Kidnapping of Svaria and Myrvia

Calendar Event
On the morning of the 23rd, the two infant daughters of Jarls Jerith Gofrith and Serena Crovan were found missing from their cribs. A frantic search ensues and soon there are posters all throughout Raelia asking for aid in finding the two young daughters. By midday, a formal search party has been organized. Some evidence points towards rival Jarls, but it seems as though the kidnappers went south towards Myrkvior Forest or beyond to Fensalir and the towns to the south.
“When I set eyes on that pesky little lumberjack, I’m going to pierce his spirits-be-damned heart!”

The Jarl clad in furs with wild hair and a look in her eyes to match was pacing the forest clearing amid the fallen leaves of Vhalar. Several members of the guard had gathered hunting dogs, that were yapping at all the activity. Baby clothes and blankets were being shoved at the dogs’ noses in attempt to get them to catch the scent of the trail, but the scene was chaotic at best with more and more searchers arriving.

Jarl Gofrith strode over to his distressed wife and grasped her wrist forcefully to stop her pacing. Although his white shirt was ruffled and out of place, his youth and handsome attire contrasted sharply from her barbarian look.

“Serena, my gulls will be back with information on House Imair any moment now. They were sent the moment we discovered it, but for now the hounds have led us here. I care about Svaria and Myrvia just as much as you do.”

Serena Crovan only gave him a backwards glance and let out an echoing screech of anguish into the sky. With incredible force, Serena threw a small disk of wood that she had been carrying into the ground, and it partially embedded itself from the impact. Jarl Gofrith looked at it uncertainly, but the decided to attempt to console his wife. Should someone pick it up to inspect it, they would find that it was about the size of a coaster with a polished finish that brought out its natural beauty of a tree trunk. However, etched upon its surface were the words, “Actions have Consequences”. With a bit of inquiry, any member of the search party would say that it had been found under the cushions of Myrvia’s empty crib. Neither Myrvia nor Svaria had been seen all morning.

A group of riders suddenly thundered into the clearing. The cries of gulls deafened the forest as a swarm of white feathers surged through the trees.

“What news?! Are the twins at the Imair estate? Are they safe?” Gofrith asked insistently as the leader of the riders dismounted.

“They said Eric Imair was not at home and that they didn’t know anything about Svaria and Myrvia,” the rider replied. “Of course, we didn’t believe them. Our men and our gulls scoured the grounds and questioned servant after servant. We tore the place apart but all we could conclude was that Eric Imair had gone out with a hunting party early this morning. If this is where the hounds brought you, then this must be where he went.”

Jarl Gofrith’s disappointment was clear. It was one trail gone cold but at least they were more certain of their current trail. If anything, it would help keep his wife from trying to dash across the countryside to burn down the Imair estate. Something she had threatened on more than one occasion that trial.

“Fifty gold nel to anyone who finds the trail or whose hound catches the scent!” Jarl Gofrith shouted and there was renewed efforts among the guards and any of the searchers who had joined the party after seeing one of the fliers posted around Raelia.

There were at least two or three dozen people, many of them wrecking havoc on any possible clues such as a snapped twig or disturbed leaves. The Crovans were like fish out of water and even the Gofrith intelligence was struggling. Beyond the immediate clearing, a sharp eye might catch sight of a hint of pink. A torn piece of soft pink fabric had been caught in some thistles growing by a small stream. Further beyond, the faint outline of a boot could be spotted in the mud of the riverbank on the far side. If someone was especially lucky, they might even notice a wisp of what seemed to be a straw-like material caught on the rough bark of an ancient tree.
OOC
Feel free to get your characters situated and start discovering some of the clues. I'll be taking the lead on the Jarls and any key intelligence officers. Miscellaneous searchers can be used and will generally be helpful in the search for the two infant daughters.

Re: Kidnapping of Svaria and Myrvia

Victor found out about the disappearance of the twins when he was on his way to Greta’s bakery in order to eat a second breakfast. It was his trial off, and he wanted to enjoy it as much as possible. There had not been a lot of enjoyable things in his life recently. His lover had been executed, he had been kidnapped and thrown into prison, he had to deal with the treacherous Devout of Scalvoris and his mountain, and then there had been a disease that it had taken him several seasons to recover from. He was finally fine again though. Besides, it was just such a lovely trial.

Melrath was currently experiencing what would ultimately be the last warm trials before Vhalar really started which lifted his spirit further. The Warlock actually smiled as he walked down the street from his house – only to stop dead in his tracks and stare as he noticed a crowd gathered in front of a wall that some sort of large poster had been attached to. He just stood there, furrowing his brow for a moment as he wondered what had possibly caused the commotion before he came closer in order to investigate.

A middle-aged woman stepped a little to the side once she noticed that he was a member of the Syns so that it did not take too long for him to be able to inspect the poster. As he read the news, his heart skipped a beat. The infant daughters of Jerith Gofrith and Serena Crovan had disappeared from their cribs. They had likely been abducted, and their parents were looking to hire people that were willing to help them look for them.

Victor decided at once that he would volunteer. When he had joined Melrath he had vowed to protect the city and its inhabitants; besides, those two little girls didn’t deserve to be the victims of whatever political schemes and power struggles were going on. They were innocent. Greta and her delicious baked goods and the other pleasant activities that he had planned for that trial could wait; they weren’t important anymore.

He had to help save two lives.

~~~
A little later, the Warlock of the Syns arrived in a clearing in the forest, dressed in a well-tailored olive-green coat with subtle embroidery, among other things. He hoped that there would be no violence, but he considered it to be better to be prepared. The coat had the protective properties of chainmail while not restricting his movements as much. There was also an adamantite shortsword at his belt as he considered it to be a bad idea to solely rely on his magic. Tucked away in his pockets were his magical map that would definitely come in handy either way as well as a vial with a most interesting potion, among other things.
He had thought that the search for the two Jarls’ missing daughters would be well-organized, but the scene around him was rather chaotic, he noticed as he surveyed the clearing and let his gaze drift over the other volunteers most of whom didn’t seem to have any idea what they were doing. Baby clothes were shoved at dog noses, people talked so much that it was hard to understand what anybody was saying, and on top of that, Jarl Crovan seemed to be losing her mind and …
… threw a disk into the ground?
That gesture was so strange that the Transmuter automatically made a step closer in order to pick it up and take a look at it, furrowing his brow as he read the words on its surface. A moment later, he turned to a blonde Melrathi man with a short beard that was approximately in his mid-thirties, another member of the search party, and asked, his tone of voice tinged with a mixture of confusion and curiosity, “Do you have any idea what this is?”
“It was found under the cushions of Myrvia’s empty crib. Neither twin was seen all morning”,
the man replied curtly, and Victor nodded before he approached the distressed Jarl Crovan and held the disk out to her, inclining his head respectfully as he did so. Keeping it seemed wrong, even though she had thrown it away, besides, it might provide a clue, a clue that consisted of more than just the words on the disk (which he would tell her).
Regardless of whether the twins’ mother took the disk back or not, Victor would spin around before too long in order to watch the riders that practically thundered into the clearing. He listened, arms crossed over his chest, as the leader of the riders shared the news with Jarl Gofrith. Were the twins indeed the victims of some sort of political rivalry then?
Victor was still trying to familiarize himself with the political scene of Melrath, but he was familiar with the plotting and scheming that occurred among noble families on a regular basis in general. He had grown up as one of the sons of the Lord of Lysoria, and his older brother ruled their homeland now. For all the flaws that he possessed (and there were a lot of them) Stefan had at least never resorted to the abduction of infants.
He was just wondering whether Eric Imair did actually have anything to do with the kidnapping of the twins and was capable of such a questionable deed, when Jarl Gofrith promised anyone that found the trail fifty gold nels. Victor did not care that much about money as he was already fairly well off as is (although he would be glad if he got paid once the mission was over, of course), he mostly wanted to see the twins returned to their home.
Unfortunately, things seemed to be getting more chaotic rather than less. Rather than actually being helpful, the other searchers pretty much wreaked havoc on the clearing – which left Victor absolutely stunned. Jarl Crovan and Jarl Gofrith seemed to have hired some of the least competent searchers with the least common sense in all of Melrath. Victor who did not count himself among them was not an incredibly skilled investigator either, but he was familiar with the basics; and besides, he had a perfectly functioning brain – which those people seemed to be lacking.
“Be careful!” he called out, even though he wasn’t sure if his words would have any effect. “You might be destroying valuable clues!” Having said that, he turned to take a look around the clearing himself. Unlike the people around him, Victor moved slowly and carefully so that he wouldn’t miss anything or accidentally step on something (although it was possible that he would overlook some things regardless). Whatever clues might have been on the ground, seemed to have been destroyed by the incompetent and overly eager searchers for the most part though. He was just about to get slightly frustrated when he spotted a hint of pink, quite by accident. A few moments later, he carefully removed a torn piece of soft fabric from some thistles growing by a nearby stream.
“I found something, sir!” he called out to Jarl Gofrith and held up the aforementioned piece of pink fabric, fervently hoping that the rest of the search party wouldn’t come rushing his way as well – and destroy even more clues in the process. “Does that look like something that could belong to your daughters? I think they might have gone this way”, he added and gestured towards the stream and the riverbank that was close by.
Re: Kidnapping of Svaria and Myrvia
In the clearing, among the crowd of volunteers, stood an unassuming and petite brunette woman. Adorned in studded leather armor that covered most of her, except for narrow spaces for her joints to move easier, a grave-gold scimitar at her hip, and a crossbow strapped to her back, she had a large white dog beside her. She held onto a leash, but the dog seemed fine to just sit.
Mouse had heard about what had happened, from a fellow mercenary. Other than that, it was just her, her leathers, sword, and bow; and her dog. She didn't talk to anyone, but she listened and watched while the volunteers went around.
So, it was easy enough when she noticed the man in the olive-green coat as he picked up the disk thrown by the Jarl. Close enough to hear, she patted the top of Sugar's head while the dog waited. When the horses rode in, though, it spooked Sugar some and the dog barked.
"Shh, shh, Sugar, quiet now," whispered Mouse while Sugar strained against the leash, in aggressive stance until convinced the riders weren't a threat.
Fifty gold nel?
Did she hear that right? Mouse looked up, at the offer of a reward.
She wasn't the best at hunting, but she had Sugar and knew she'd be fine walking however far was required. Mouse surveyed the crowd of volunteers, quiet.
The dog beside her settled down, panting with a bit of slobber.
Mouse glanced at the man in the olive-green coat again when he shouted at the riders. Instead of searching for anything, she watched him... and stayed a few short paces behind while she followed his path. It wasn't much longer though, until he seemed to have found something among thistles. Mouse glanced over her shoulder, then looked back and approached the stranger.
Before she could get closer, though, the man shouted again with what looked to be pink fabric. Mouse lowered her gaze, and glanced around. She thought she saw something though... Mouse slid down the bank some, to stand at the river's edge near the man in the olive-green coat. Her brown eyes narrowed while she peered out.
She said, though her voice hardly raised above a whisper, "There's something over there?"
Mouse paused for a moment, then pointed across the at the faint impression in the mud that didn't lay consistent with the rest. She lowered her hand soon after, though, and wrapped the leash around both her hands so she could tightly cling to the leather. She glanced at those nearby, then turned and started to search the ground around the area anyway. She kept her gaze down, and stayed quiet, while she listened to whatever was said among the others.
Despite the chaos that ensued, there seemed to an Ydalir ranger that was a little more level headed and was picking around the edges of the wood, ignoring the rest of the searchers. He was a burly man, gruff but light footed in his movement.
When Victor identified the scrap of pink fabric, the ranger approached before Jarl Gofrith noticed. “Ye found that by the river, eh?”
The young girl and her dog pointed out tracks in the mud and the Ydalir ranger attentively followed to the riverbank. Beckoning to the pair of them, he spoke quietly. “Jarl Gofrith ain’t too shabby with his network of gulls, but out here he and Crovan are no more than distressed parents. Let’s see to these babes.”
As he led the way, he stopped for a moment to inspect a bit of straw like material left on a tree trunk. “Curious…” he mused and continued onwards.
Another half footprint was spotted followed by some freshly broken branches. But when they emerged in a clearing, a group of masked and hooded Melrathi closed in on them. The burlap hoods were of the same colour as the straw or twine that was found earlier. Bark masks obscured their faces. The whimpering of a babe could be heard within their midst.
“Have you come to ask Mykrvior for forgiveness?” Asked the leader of the group. “For the destruction of all her tree spirits? What a pitiful cause… a mere boat or two for the sacrifice of an ancient oak spirit. You ought to be ashamed. We’ll take these two infants to be raised of the forest and of the spirits, as clearly there is no respect for the Dark Mother from their parents.”
Comments: Again, my apologies for disappearing for this thread. I hope to have wrapped up at least the premise of this thread. If you would like write a follow up post to either gain the favour of the Gofriths and Crovans, or of Myrkvior’s Kin, you’re welcome to do so. Otherwise, the default result will be Myrkvior’s Kin keeping a hold of the infants for several more trials before being eventually reclaimed by their parents.
I really enjoyed Victor’s candid nature to the chaotic scene and your detailed descriptions. He also came in thoroughly prepared with his map, short sword, protective coat and truth serum.
