It takes a certain level of self assurance, arrogance or... something to bounce off a door after charging at it and then act as though nothing really happened. It was what Qit'ria did, though and, after she'd made sure that she wasn't permanently injured, she moved to crouch under the window. Freya and Victor, meanwhile, were at some odds with each other and their suggested approach to the whole affair. What that meant, though, was that Qit'ria went scouting around the house, Freya stood back and kept a wide eye on the house and Victor spoke to Meno.

"How'd you know my name!?" The voice from inside the house asked. Although they couldn't see the child, that she had a deep frown on her face was very evident. "I shouldn't talk to strangers. Go away." But she sounded uncertain. Qit, meanwhile, was making her way around the house and she noticed a few things. It looked normal, like a normal house - but depending on how much Qit knew of such things, there was a very definite sense of high security. Windows were latched and locked and shuttered and barred. Doors were locked tight, bolted shut. There were also more bugs than she'd expect at this time of the arc, but maybe the house was warm. The main thing was the security.

More than one might expect from a house in the woods, perhaps. But then, maybe there were particularly nasty predators.

"Grandma says go'way or she's gonna eat you," the little girl said and the stubborness in her voice was evident. "No, Grandma. No. NO!" There were the sounds of a scuffle inside and then, all went quiet for a few moments. Then, just as Qit got back around the front, the door opened and the little girl in question looked at them. She looked well enough, although tired and as though she had maybe lost weight over the last few trials. There was a chain on the door, holding it so that it only opened a little way and that was what she peered through.

"My Grandma's sick an' says I gotta go cos she's so hungry. But there's ... can you 'elp her?" They might notice the three or four bugs which were crawling around the floor, also. Large eyes looked at them, Meno was obviously fighting back tears and had the quivering lower lip to prove it.

Qit'ria snuck about the house, keeping close to it, looking for another way in, while keeping an eye and ear out for the wolves. She first found a crate of some sort, with a hinged lid upon it. She opened it up and wrinkled her nose at the horrid scent that came out of it. But more surprising was that as she looked in the compost heap, she saw troves of insects crawling all about. Why were the so many during the cold seasons? Bugs should be dead right now. And it wasn't just one particularly hardy type. There were the... lots of legs things, the flies, the beetles, the worms. It was unusual.

She continued along to a window with the shutters closed. She reached up and grabbed one and slowly pulled it outward, only to find it stuck. Latched or locked or something. Her mouth was tight in a disapproving line as she moved on. Rounding the next corner, she peered out, seeing a door on the next wall. But movement caught the corner of her eye. Ants, climbing up and down the wooden house. She looked at them in complete confusion. It was far too cold for insects to be out. What was going on?

She was immediately more on her guard and suspicious of everything. There was something wholly unnatural at play here. She didn't trust this house, this clearing. She made her way around the house, but didn't bother to try any more doors or windows, a bit disturbed. The heightened security was lost on Qit. To her, the main thing was the insects. She never lived in a house anyways, and their hut back home didn't have locks. It wasn't something to check further than the shutters.

Qit came around the front of the house just in time to see the door opened. Qit'ria stayed ducked by the corner, low, eyeballing the little girl. Or rather just the nose of her from this vantage point. She saw a chain dangling above the girl, watching it catch the door as an unsteady hand moved it. Qit realized that while that chain was there, there was no getting in, by force at least. Qit'ria drew a javelin, thinking that if she could hit the chain from here, they could open the door, and grab the girl.

Qit'ria could hear the girl's trembling voice, and slid the javelin back into place. There was no need. The girl was asking for help. So Qit asked herself, 'What would Faith do?' She stepped out slowly from the hiding spot around the corner, moving out so they girl could clearly see her and not be surprised. She then stepped closer, slowly, keeping her hands out in front of her. "I Qit'ria. He call Wiktor. She call..." she hadn't planned out her words this far, "Faith. We here help you. How can help?" She continued to move as close as she could while watching the girl for signs of spooking her. Girls and baby deer weren't any different right? And Qit could sneak up on deer easily. Sometimes. Rarely.

Finding Meno

Image
As Qit’ria started to move again and moan in pain, the Transmuter couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. He didn’t normally care if somebody died or not (most people were easily replaceable in his opinion) but he found the savage rather fascinating even though teaching her how to use a whetstone or shake hands had been a bit of a challenge and she could barely speak Common, a grave sin as far as the trained scholar was concerned. As she tried to get up, he extended a hand – and pulled it away again a moment later, realizing that she didn’t need his help. He was, he had to admit, quite impressed.

As Qit’ria moved towards the house, he momentarily met her gaze and inclined his head sharply, a sign that he had understood, before he turned around again. While the savage crouched along the wall, he stayed where he was, some distance away from the door – he deemed it unwise to get too close to it for now, considering what had happened to Qit’ria but a moment earlier - so that little Meno and whatever people were with her would be able to see him, should they chance another look out of the window.

As he waited, it occurred to him that a well-placed spell would likely allow them to force their way into the house, no matter what kind of visible or invisible barriers they had erected, but it might scare little Meno, and he didn’t want to have to look for the girl again because she had run away a second time. The trip from Scalvoris Town to the Sweetwine Woods had not been pleasant, and thus he wasn’t particularly keen on repeating the experience. One walk through deep snow, surrounded by wolves, was enough.

“The Elements have told me about you”, he answered truthfully and then he added, “Besides, I’m not a stranger. I just told you my name.” She sounded uncertain as she told him to go away, he noticed, which made him hopeful that she would give in. Her next words caused him to furrow his brow though. Her grandmother ate people? Was he just standing in front of the home of a cannibal? He found the notion laughable at best, but his heart momentarily beat faster nevertheless as he took note of the scuffle going on inside the house. Perhaps, he thought, Meno’s grandmother had lost her mind and become dangerous … but that didn’t explain the bugs that he could see now …

As the door opened, he resisted the urge to rush towards it – he was aware of what had happened to Qit’ria. Meno looked thin, he observed, as if that grandmother of hers hadn’t been feeding her properly. He was just about to tell her to please come outside, when Qit’ria appeared again. He raised an eyebrow and looked at her, an unspoken question on his lips – he was wondering what she had discovered – before he lowered his sword somewhat and followed her. As he did so, his lips momentarily curved into a smile. Faith?

“We’ll help your grandmother”, he assured her even though his knowledge of medicine was next to non-existent, and he had no idea how one went about curing a mad and possibly cannibalistic old woman – unless it was with a well-placed spell to the chest or the head which he doubted that either Meno or her grandmother would appreciate. “Do you think it’s safe for you to come outside for a moment?” he asked, since she knew best what was going on inside the house. Perhaps, he thought, he simply ought to grab her and rush her back to Scalvoris Town, and leave that mad old grandmother of hers to her own devices, preferably locked up in that house so that she wouldn’t be able to cause any harm.

Finding Meno

16th Cylus, 718
The little girl looked between the two of them and lifted her hand. "The lady ran away," she said and pointed to where Freya had been but was no more. Then, she listened to the two of them - the kind woman with the open hand and the gentle voiced man and her lower lip started to tremble. "I want to come out. But ... but..." She wanted to cry but she didn't, holding on to it as best she could. Good sense fought with the obedience of a child and she wavered. Just there, for a moment, she wavered. It was Qit who did it when she asked how they could help and she shook her head. "I'm afraid of my Grandsma," she whispered. She was, obviously terrified. "She doesn't seem like 'erself an' there's all the bugs in her but she says that's that's. My grandpa was here an' he was keepin' her tied up but.. but he died an'... when I heard you."

The sound of shuffling movement from the bedroom down the small hallway was unmistakable and the ... thing... that came out of there was most certainly not alive. A shambling, mutated mass with undulating, writing creatures under her peeling skin and bugs crawling all over her - only a child would be able to see anything, anything remotely resembling the woman she had been before she died. Judging by her state of decay - she had died quite some time ago. The thing moved slowly, but the little girl hesitated.

And then, as the low growl came from the thing which had used to be her grandmother and it vomited a deep green substance which sizzled and burned its flesh and the ground where it landed, the little girl unchained the door and ran out. Her aim was to hide behind Qit'ria and she was obviously terrified and utterly traumatized.

She left the door open of course, so they could see the thing there, but then, the shambling creature picked up speed the very trill the chain was unlocked and ran, charging towards them. It was possible that one or both of them would have time to grab and close the door - but equally, they might not and if they split their concentration, things could be about to get very bad indeed.

Very. Very. Very bad indeed.

"No Grandsma!! They're GOOD PEOPLE!" The little girl called Meno screeched, but the undead travesty which walked in her grandmother's corpse didn't listen and if it heard? It really didn't seem to care.

Finding Meno

Freya had indeed run away, Victor noticed, which was just fine with him since the woman had become a bit of a liability. That problem had been solved, but there was still another one. What exactly was going on in that house and how were they supposed to persuade the girl to leave it? She seemed to be almost mortally afraid of that grandmother of hers which made him wonder why she had run to her in the first place. If he needed to run away, a potential cannibal that had … had she just said that there were bugs in the woman? He looked at Meno appraisingly for a moment and came to the conclusion that yes, she had indeed said that her grandmother was filled with bugs.

A potential cannibal that apparently suffered from some sort of nasty infection would not be his first choice when it came to running away to somebody – it didn’t sound safe - and then there was the matter of her grandfather that had kept her grandmother tied up. The Transmuter realized that he might be somewhat out of his element here. He had travelled the world and studied all kinds of magical phenomena, but he was not used to dealing with potential perverts, criminals and old women that ate people – if that was really what they were dealing with here. He was, he had to admit, still a bit confused.

As that … thing showed itself it all started to make sense though. The Transmuter involuntarily let out a curse and made a step back, shuddering slightly. He wasn’t sure what had happened to the old woman – if she had been the victim of a necromancer or something even more sinister – and he didn’t really care either, to be honest. Meno had wanted them to help her grandmother, but it was obvious that she was beyond help. Even he could see that.

When she ran out of the house, followed by her grandmother, he didn’t hesitate. He knew that there was no way that he would be able to reach the door and slam it shut in time, so he did the next best thing. He had been hesitant to reveal that he was a mage so far – not everybody liked his kind – but this here was an exceptional situation. He raised a hand and rapidly forced ether into the ground around the old woman in order to reshape it and raise a wall made of frozen dirt around her – which would hopefully trap her long enough for them to escape with the girl.

Qit'ria could hear the little girl's words, but more importantly, she could smell something most fowl from within the house. Something was dead. Very dead. Had been dead for a long time, and this little girl was living in that? Qit'ria knew that she wasn't the most "civilized" type of person out there, and she rather preferred it that way, but even she wouldn't live among the smell of death and rot. It was disgusting. It churned her stomach.

Did she just say bugs? IN her grandma? Qit'ria did not want to know what that actually meant, but her ears twitched as she heard the shuffling inside. Something, grandma maybe, was moving. The sound was not footsteps though, and she couldn't pick out exactly what it was. She made sure to leave it in mind as she readied her spear. She didn't like the sound of this grandma already. When Qit saw "Grandma" through the crack in the door, she immediately knew that this whole situation was horribly wrong. After having seen the skeletons in the desert, after the mossters on Immortals Tongue, Qit'ria was not about to mess around with what she didn't understand. She knew everything she needed to know about that thing. It wasn't natural.

Her javelin was ready, her entire body tensed up. The girl needed to run. And the moment she did, Qit'ria threw her javelin. Not at the mass of bugs and rotten flesh, but at the ground before the door. Her intention was to wedge the door shut briefly, for she was already running toward Meno. She knew her spear wouldn't have killed the beast, there was no way it would be that ease. It wasn't one creature, in her eyes. But many. A hive. But if she could slow its approach, she could get more distance between them. After all, they weren't here to kill a monster. They were here to save a missing child.

Qit'ria saw the ground rise up, magically, and normally would be surprised. But she'd seen Zeepa's magic do the exact same thing when they were hunted by that forest nightmare. Weektor was a transmuter too. That meant he'd be just fine on his own, she'd seen what Zeepa could do. There was no choice here. She ran to the little girl, scooping the girl up in her arms, and tossing her over her shoulder, immediately running in the opposite direction from the beast. "Weektor! Run! River!"

The plan was simple. Run to the icy river, get past it. Even if the beast could follow, or follow quickly, she was sure that she could traverse the river quite a lot more quickly than it. And if she got lucky, they could lure it there, get it to fall in and freeze, or be swept away. And so, she held the girl's legs tight, heading for where she knew Ol' Tuck's Run to be. She didn't try to speak to the girl while running, her focus was keeping her footing while moving at fast, steady pace. She saved in sprinting for when it was needed. She hoped Weektor would be fine, he was good people. Get to the river. Get across the river. Get Meno back to Scalvoris Town. The mission, in her mind, was simple. And simple is where Qit'ria thrived.

There is a lot to be said for teamwork, and a lot more to be said for not simply courting trouble wherever it comes. The two of them worked together and, as Victor caused Grandsma to stop dead in her tracks, Qit'ria picked up Meno and ran, heading towards the river. Victor cast his spell and it went without hitch. The very ground itself lifted and encased the creature that had been the grandmother. Victor got to have the sight of her lifting her head and opening her mouth, as though to scream. But whilst no sounds came out, thousands upon thousands of bugs did. Crawling flying, and slime-covered bugs poured out of the mouth and swarmed towards them.

But they were already moving.

Qit'ria might notice that the young girl didn't fight, didn't pound or pummel the woman holding her, she just lay there and let Qit carry her.

Which meant that the three of them got to the river bank and there was no pursuit. Meno looked between the two of them and then a single tear fell down the child's cheek. "My Grandsma is gone, isn't she? She says she's 'ungry, though. Will she 'urt people?" If they come to stop 'er, what'll appen to her? I don't... I... " And with that the child descended into hysterical sobbing.

Presumably, they took her back to Scalvoris. The "Grandsma" beast didn't follow them that they saw or heard, didn't give chase and it was bordering on unnervingly quiet. But when they got back, Meno was taken to be reunited with her parents and the Elements dispatched people immediately and then, took their statements. They were both given a 200gn reward, too. However, while all the hustle and bustle was happening, the Elements sent to apprehend the woman got back. There was nothing in that clearing, they said. The house was burned to the ground and still hot from the flames which had destroyed it, smoke still trailing. There was no sign of an old woman, nor her husband.

And no. No insects.

Victor watched just long enough in order to notice how the ground rose around the beast that had once been a little girl’s grandmother and encased her. He saw her open her mouth, as if to scream, only to release a multitude of bugs, and then he spun around and ran after Qit’ria, as fast as his feet could carry him, his heart pounding madly in his chest. He didn’t know what exactly would happen if those bugs reached him, but it wouldn’t be good. In fact, it would likely have disastrous and potentially life-threatening consequences. He could, possibly, handle one beast, but not thousands of bugs …

“She’s gone”, he confirmed, hands on his knees and breathing heavily, as they stood at the bank of the frozen river a few bits later on before he took a look around in order to make sure that such was indeed the case. “We’ll make sure that your Grandsma won’t be able to hurt anybody”, he assured Meno. He didn’t say anything as she asked what would happen to the old woman, but simply looked at her and stroke her as she started to sob, finding himself quite unwilling to lie to her since she would find out the truth before long.

“Let’s go back to Scalvoris Town”, he said to Qit’ria.

~~~
The trip back to the city was surprisingly uneventful. The Grandsma beast never showed its face again, the wolves had stopped howling, and the trees that surrounded them were just that again. Trees. There was nothing that was in the least threatening about their surroundings anymore. In fact, it was almost eerily quiet. Under normal circumstances the Transmuter wouldn’t have trusted the silence and wondered if it was just the calm before the storm, but as it was he didn’t mind it at all. In fact, he preferred it.
He accepted the reward and briefly told the Elements what had happened – and informed them that they needed to be quick as his magic wouldn’t be permanent. It was too late though. When the Elements returned from the Sweetwine Woods, they informed him that the house had been burned to the ground and that the old woman was nowhere to be found. For several ten-trials afterwards the Transmuter wondered if an undead grandmother was haunting the forest and preying on unsuspecting travelers ...
Qit'ria ran and ran, relieved that the child didn't struggle or fight back. When she reached the river, she stopped, waiting. She listened to the surroundings, waiting for Weektor to arrive. She hoped he'd make it. He was one of the few people on this island she didn't think was totally useless. If he didn't show up soon, she'd have to abandon him. And she'd feel bad about it. For a few breaks at least.
When he burst through the brush, Qit'ria relaxed a bit. She even almost smiled at him. And still, she listened to the forest, she sniffed at the air, and she waited. They were downwind, and she was confident she'd smell the insect filled corpse moving toward them. No shuffling, no stench, nothing was coming. She relaxed. Qit'ria didn't offer any words to the child. She left that to Weektor, her job was just to get the child back to town. And so, she crossed the river, and began following it back to Scalvoris Town.
The silence in the forest on the way back was peaceful. Once Qit'ria was up the river far enough, she let Meno walk herself, though she held the little girl's hand. It was strange, she never really spent time with children. The little girl kept a tight grip, and it reminded Qit'ria of her sisters. She'd always hold their hands when walking them through the forest, since they were too small to be learning to hunt properly yet. Her throat tightened as she gripped Meno's hand in return. And for a moment, Qit'ria's memories of her sisters didn't cause pain. And she smiled.
Once back to town, she handed off Meno to the people who stepped up to claim her. She hoped the girl belonged to them, she didn't want to have to rescue her again. Watching the girl be taken away, Qit'ria found herself wishing for her sisters back. She clutched her arms, wondering what it would be like to be a good big sister. Or maybe a mother? She looked at Weektor. Studying him. Nah. Not good enough. A good guy, but wouldn't be a good enough mate. She gathered the coins that were given, not that she cared, tossing them in her pack. Then she realized she lost a javelin. Sneering, she made her way to the market, to buy a replacement before she went back to camp.
What an annoying trial.
I really enjoy Victor, he's a very fun pc who has a lot of potential for fun plots. I enjoyed this thread and I hope you did too!
Meno's Betrayal aka: But who froze the father? In the trials that follow, there are questions about Meno, about who froze her father and, come to that, questions start to arise about the circumstances of her mother's death too. Two trials after she was rescued, Meno disappears and is not heard from again..... until later, of course, but that's a story for another season. The Green Coat It's beautiful. Well tailored and it fits him really well. It's a deep olive green with subtle embroidering on the edging. When he wears it Victor realises that it is the equivalent of chain mail armour but only against physical blows from close up (sword, punch etc), not from range weapons. Provides no protection against magic attacks or weapons. It's got long sleeves, is down to his knees and, also? It keeps him warm.
