First Course /Arrival
Zoro stood, strong and firm and all heroic chin jut and Vega grinned at him. "At ease, soldier, before you strain somethin'. An' if you call me ma'am again, I'll be strainin' somethin' for you. My name's Vega." She smiled as she said it, hugged Bao and Darius, chuckled as Darius did this strange little movement where he half stuck out his bottom to avoid her baby bump. It was sweet and wholly unnecessary, but Vega said nothing more to tease him and sat herself back down. "It would be right lovely to see you in Hopetoun," she said to Bao. As they sat, Zoro said that he had sisters who emulated her and thumped him a lot. Vega raised an eyebrow at that. "Why would anyone wanna be like me? I'm a right cantankerous old mare, I am. Tell them to quit bein' flibbertyidjits an' get on with their own life." Thumping, it seemed, should happen on ones own terms.
Second Course
Arlo's question came first and Vega looked at him with a slight grin on her face. "Silly or ill-advised? Me? More than I can count, if I'm honest," it was true. She tended towards rash and impulsive. But then, she came up with an example. "I went to Desnind, to try an' find out what I could about my mother's family. Arlo an' I met there," she said, to those around the table. Presumably, he remembered. "Anyhow, while I was there, a kid went missin', an' Arlo an' I signed up to go searchin'. It were the dead of winter an' it were freezin' cold. We found the kid asleep in this cave with this enormous beast all wrapped around it, an' I had to go an' pick up the child without wakin' the creature. Sword was away, I had to be quiet like a mouse an' I really jus' didn't know if I could. I picked the little girl up, an' the creature woke up. I had this moment where I knew what I had to do. I had to run an' get this child to safety, but I didn't want to leave people behind." She smiled slightly at the memory. "I were prayin' to Xiur the whole time, an' I had to put my faith in him, an' the people I were with. That was easy, in Arlo's case, but there was this woman in high heel shoes an' no coat in the dead of winter in the woods." With a shrug of her shoulders, Vega finished the tale. "I legged it, Arlo held the beast off long enough for me to get the little girl to safety, an' then he an' high-heels an' our guide popped out of the cave like a cork out of a bottle an' we got to bring the little girl home."
After Arlo had asked his question of the group, Zoro spoke, first to Qylios and then he asked a question. Vega looked at the young biqaj man and she gave him an intent stare. "I feel that," she said quietly but firmly. "Our life has been one adventure after another, I've fought side by side with Immortals, fought against one or two of them. I've faced pumpernickels an' ... all the things I've done. I keep thinkin' that someone's goin' to realise that I'm wingin' it an' I'm terrified an' I don't really know what I'm doin'." She smiled as she spoke that to him. "An' somewhere along the way, people started actin' like I'm someone famous, an' I have solutions. I've had childless couples come to me to try an' make a miracle for them," she'd managed it, of course, "an' all sorts. That feelin' is jus' that. A feelin'. It's your actions what make you brave. An' as for the second question?" She considered for a moment who the most famous person she'd ever met was and she shrugged slightly. "Xiur, I guess. Lady Qylios. Any one of the Immortals. But in terms of mortals. I dunno, I met this guy called Arlo Creede, an' he's quite well-known. Oh! Gennadiya. She's a healer, an' I know lots of people that know her. She's sittin' over there, the one with the beautiful platinum hair?" Vega nodded.
Strangely, it was Bao's question which gave Vega most pause. "I don't know," she said, simply. "There isn't one place what brings me pleasure. I'd go wherever my family was, an' I'd travel an' see it all, with them." The fairies began to arrive and Vega looked at Joy with a delighted smile. "They're fairies. Look, look at that one! He's dressed like a king!" And, indeed he was. A tiny male fae with beautiful rainbow wings and, atop his head, an acorn crown. Vega looked down at Joy and she smiled, "It's beautiful here, isn't it?"
Qylios
Qylios spoke, then, and she directed her words to Vega. She spoke of Joy without using names and Vega listened. She smiled and nodded her understanding and then she spoke. "Thank you," she said to Qylios first. "We'll do our very best, every trial." And that began here and now, Vega knew. So, she looked down at Joy and she reached out to stroke the girl's hair. "Hey, Joy, so one of the reasons why we're all here is because we're all so happy that you're here with us. Everyone here." She smiled at the child and paused, waiting just to check if there were questions. "Arlo an' I are goin' to be lookin' after you, your new parents. You can call us Vega an' Arlo, or Ma an' Pa, or whatever you want. We're really excited to be doin' that, an' we're goin' to look after you the very best we can. An' this lady here, she's your grandma, darlin' girl." She gestured to Qylios, making sure that Qylios understood that there would be no secrets kept from Joy and that Qylios was one of those who were involved in this. She didn't fuss, didn't gush, she just said it.
Again, she paused, checking and answering any of Joy's questions. Then, she replied to Qylios, but did so in a way which included Joy and which Joy could have a say in. "I know that there's a lot of people here who want to make sure that Joy is alright, an' who want to be her friends," she said. "So, maybe it would be nice if the people who want one have a way to contact me an' Arlo. Like this lion locket I've got, I can always communicate with Hart, or an echo scroll that all comes back to one scroll or somethin'." Looking at Qylios, she considered it. "If anyone wants to spend time with us, our family," she gestured to Arlo and Joy - that was important. "Then they can contact me an' Arlo, an' then we'll all talk about how we can do that best." It was important that Joy had a say, after all. "An' we promise to ~ I don't know, shall we say once a season ~ write on that scroll or whatever it is that we have, an' tell everyone about her an' how she's doin'." That kind of thing was important, Vega knew, to keep communication open two ways. Then, she lifted her head and looked at Qylios directly. "Grandma is always welcome." Vega said, and said no more than that. Qylios was the Immortal of Bonds and to deny her the chance to be Joy's grandmother would be cruel on a hundred levels.
As for what device they used to achieve this communication, Vega really didn't mind. Written or spoken, either was fine, but the only thing she asked was that they held only one scroll or locket and that they could use it to send a message to everyone or to specific individuals.
Between Courses
Then, there was another break between the courses and Vega ate a wonderful lime sorbet and listened as Saoire spoke about her Arlo. She spoke about Elisabeth too, and Vega had of course seen everything now. She beamed with pride and, as much as she knew that Arlo would rather not be the center of attention in this way, it was necessary and deserved to her mind. Each of the Immortals spoke and Vega was nearly bouncing out of her seat. When it came time to stand and clap, she stood and clapped. She cheered and blew a very unladylike whistle then cheered.
As for the expectation of a speech? Vega had no shame and she dug a sharp elbow into his ribs. "No duckin' this one, Creede." Her elbow was sharp and her words were teasing but Vega's eyes shone with pride and delight. Here, in front of all the Immortals gathered, they were cheering for her Arlo and she was determined that he'd take - for once - the praise he was due.
Third Course
Qylios left them and Daia came over. Vega knew this Immortal well and she was very pleased to see her. The dire lion at her side perked up also, moving over to greet Daia. The third course which was brought to Vega was slices of roast venison with roast potato and broad beans served with a deep red wine jus. Vega tucked in and considered Daia's question, then finally she answered. "It is difficult to narrow down," she said honestly. "But for me, what's important is that someone is jus' honestly themselves. I can't abide rude, but I'd rather someone were real an' rude than fake an' polite." Shrugging slightly she smiled. "Not much of an answer, I'm sorry." She would like to give Daia a better answer but that was just all she could think of, really.
As for a question for the table, Vega considered it. Then, she asked one. "If you could spend a trial doin' whatever you wanted, no matter how strange or difficult to do, or whatever. No matter any of that, if you could do anythin', what would you like that trial to be spent doin'?"
