Almund is a thriving township with a dark side. With houses made from the wooden bodies of decommissioned ships, there are many opportunities here, coupled with many dangers.

The Boomjuice Plot

2 Cylus 724
Part of Balthazar felt anxious about the distance he was going to bridge and test he was going to run. The rest of him remembered that it was the second trial of the season and he lived above a city of explosive juice. He had only waited as long as he had so that he had prepared adequately to avoid death. After infiltrating and stealing small samples of the explosive fluid in the barrels under Almund, Balthazar had spent the rest of the trial running through a specific and safe procedure. He attuned to the explosive and weeded through all the notes that made it what it was.

Unfortunately notes were more abstract in a lot of ways. He sensed precision in the explosive. Precision, ingenuity and danger. These were notes he hadn't fully saturated into his spark before but his work sifting through the explosive frequency ensured he'd recognize them quickly going forward. There were other notes that he found more familiar. Ambition, pride, and deception. Whoever had made this formula had put a great amount of all three into the work. It was a strange combination to any who hadn't built bombs before. Testing would be dangerous. Notes of deception and pride suggested that the formula as especially volatile and would be difficult to counteract. Worse- it might be easy to enhance.

The Albarech had suggested the perfect place for them to experiment on the explosive without drawing too much attention. Balthazar was astonished he hadn't considered it given his history with the location. The Watch had stood empty since the death the watchman, Philip Carey. Balthazar had investigated the murder. He'd gone to the Watch and spent significant time there. He'd gone back again after discovering evidence that the pirates had been there and indeed they had- but they didn't find what they were looking for. Even without his time spent there, he only needed a strong memory to make a portal somewhere he'd been and Vri ensured his marked had that. He could open a portal directly from Almund to the Watch and run his tests. Two trials of travel cut down to well... several breaks of intense meditation.

He had asked Robin to meet him at his home early in the morning but he began the preparation for the portal breaks earlier into the night so that it would be ready on time. He had enough experience with long distance portals now to know how long it would take to unlock the doorway. Robin arrived promptly on time and let himself in, as he'd been instructed, only to find Balthazar sitting cross legged on a blanket in the middle of his living room. The mage's eyes were closed and his mind was engaged pushing two different placed together; The Watch and his house. A front side and a back side of a door that his spark allowed him to open. Robin closed the door behind himself while Balthazar opened one before them both.

As the mage turned his hand in the air, a ring of blue flame coiled around itself in the air- splitting open a portal to the fortress beyond the mouth of the bay. Balthazar opened his eyes and let his body fall back onto the floor with a deeply relieved breath. He could maintain the doorway far more easily than he could open it. It was there that he caught an upside down view of Robin and quickly sat up. "It's always harder than it seems." Balthazar admit as he pushed himself up onto his feet.

Balthazar and Robin proceeded to move the chest with Balthazar's alchemy materials and a few other do-dads through the portal. Robin began setting up testing field in one of the rooms according to Balthazar's instructions while the mage took a look around the fortress to ensure that they were alone. He was also looking for any hidden compartments or passages that might indicate The Watch was being used to store weapons and bombs just like Almund. Part of it was to ensure that nothing interfered with their work and part of it was that Balthazar didn't want to set off any explosive near a stockpile of other explosives. Once he was sure that the ruined fortress on the ice was secure, Balthazar returned to Robin and the temporary lab outside his lingering portal.

It would have been nice if the journal had provided him with the formula to render the explosives inert but he had built explosives before. He was familiar with the components and he had magic to fill in what he didn't immediately know. He would either figure it out or figure out how to dispose of it. The Watch was the perfect place to work. It was a controlled environment with multiple rooms, furniture, and plenty of space to work. Best of all, it was private. No one would see or hear the explosions from the tests all the way out there.

Robin had repurposed the kitchen area for the makeshift laboratory because even in the abandoned pile, the kitchen was the most sanitary place- or most easy to sanitize. He put Balthazar's tools onto the tables and did not risk touching the second container where the explosive samples were being held. He'd helped set up the tools before but he knew little about bombs. It was just as magic to him as when Balthazar threw lightning so he left that for the mage to handle himself.

When Balthazar arrived at the end of Robin's time setting up, he quickly moved back through the portal into his house and retrieved the container with the explosive samples. He knew that it wasn't delicate enough to set off by moving it a little but he was ensuring not to drop it on the way back through the portal. He slowly and carefully set down the smaller box on a table far from tools. "Are you sure you don't want me to get Lyanna?" Robin asked with a gesture towards the portal. Balthazar's brow furrowed slightly.

"Why?" He asked. He felt like it would be a risk to have more people around. However once he closed the door it would take a long time to reopen.

"What if we blow up?"

"The odds of that are..." Balthazar paused, "Okay, get Lyanna."

Re: The Boomjuice Plot

2 Cylus 724
A short time later when Robin returned with Lyanna and Balthazar caught her up to speed, the three saboteurs were ready to conduct their first test. Fortunately while the sky was filled with clouds, there was no snowfall to cause further setbacks. The Watch was always cold given its location but snowfall would have been detrimental to their effort to prevent exterior influences. Then again, and this was what Balthazar always thought when he considered his initial teaching that cleanliness was next to Immortalhood, if they tested how the explosive worked under the weather conditions that Cylus presented, they would be acutely prepared for any activation of the explosive in Cylus. Yet that assumed consistent weather and weather was rarely consistent.

Lyanna waited at the entrance to the kitchen laboratory with her medical bag incase someone was hurt and Robin stood beside her. Balthazar had set a wooden plate atop a rock and set up three glass cups at different distances in the room. One was five feet away, one was ten feet away, and one was opposite the others but eight feet away. Just as he placed the final one, Lyanna called out, "What's with the cups?"

Balthazar turned with a somewhat self-satisfied smile on his face. "They'll help measure force." Balthazar said "If the glass breaks from the blast the drop creates, we know the force travels that far. If it breaks at one distance and not another, we can narrow down the power it has. We should also be able to scale upwards to predict what larger amounts would do. If the glass at ten feet breaks, we try again with a further cup until it doesn't break. That way we figure out how far the impact goes."

"Apart from the obvious, why does that matter?" Robin inquired.

"It'll help me figure out what's in the mix." Balthazar said, "The color, smell, the way it looks when it goes up, everything will matter if we want to recreate it. I worked with powder in Quacia and vaguely with gas but this is... something in-between in many ways as far as I can tell. We're going to be cautious." The duo seemed content with that answer so Balthazar continued setting up the first test. He made sure to soothe his Defiance spark so that no stray spark of electricity would accidentally ignite the boomjuice while he handled it. The mage moved back over to the plate and uncorked the vial. He reached in with the dropper and pulled a small amount of the strange juice from within.

Wait. The plate was made of wood. Wood absorbed water. Water was fluid. The wood might absorb the drop and impact the results. Balthazar turned the dropper upright so it wouldn't spill accidentally and went back to the cupboard to find a metal plate. There had been some cheap tin ones around the last time he visited. There. He found one and replaced the wooden plate with the tin plate so that the drop wouldn't absorb into the surface material.

His hands weren't shaking but he felt like they were.

This could be the end of Balthazar Black. Killed by a drop of boomjuice that activated on contact. He took another breath. It wouldn't activate on contact. Storing it in barrels would have been disastrous if it couldn't endure a little sloshing around. He took one last breath and-

Drip

Re: The Boomjuice Plot

2 Cylus 724
Nothing happened.

Balthazar let out a relieved breath and looked down at the viscous explosive juice sitting on the tin plate. It didn't seem any more reactive on the plate than it had in the vial or in the dropper. Balthazar set the dropper into the vial- they were deigned so that the dropper also functioned to seal the vial but Balthazar kept them carefully in his hand all the same. He walked backwards toward Robin and Lyanna carefully, gesturing for them to move behind the wall for safety. They did just that as Balthazar took their place in the doorway. He estimated that it was a safe distance. It was more than safe enough to set off the black powder he had made and honestly, if he had enough of that to fill the barrels beneath Almund he was pretty sure it would do exactly what this explosive juice was intended to do. How much was enough for someone to be content with the damage they could do?

Perhaps they'd get lucky. Maybe all of the work went into making the explosive difficult to counteract and it really wouldn't be powerful at all. Balthazar moved his body to hide it behind the doorway but he kept the drop of the mysterious fluid in his view. He had to be precise but the spell was as easy as breathing at this point for him. In this case it would feel like breathing after a long race, but that was because the spark was soothed. "Everyone ready?" Balthazar asked Robin and Lyanna behind him. They'd both moved a little further from the wall. Robin seemed to move for protection. Lyanna moved to get further from the blast but also to get a better view.

"Ready." They said.

Balthazar took a deep breath and raised his hand up towards the side of his head. Just a spark. He could feel his diri Fuego and Crow watching him intently from their own safe hiding places. That didn't bother him. What bothered him were the other diri he could see who had amassed to watch the experiment. He was forged. He saw their concepts. Anaks of fire, doom, danger, risk- all sorts had filled the kitchen in their various forms. Some were more discrete than others. Some hid as normal utensils. One had hidden as a plate and Balthazar was careful not to pick it up for the tests. Others were more overt. An anak of doom sat beside the plate in the guise of a constant explosion that folded in on itself over and over again.

Test number one, what does it do?

Balthazar focused his attention entirely on that single enigmatic drop and he reached inward. He asked for one small spark.

BOOM!... well more like POP!

All and all, a single drop wasn't so bad. He'd been a little overcautious.

He noticed some things immediately and he knew that no one else would. Both Robin and Lyanna had been shocked by the sound of the blast but Balthazar kept his focus on collecting information. The sight and the sound were the most prominent things he noticed but other factors boiled to the surface with every trill of consideration after the explosion had occurred. His senses were more attuned that his friends but the important part here was his memory. He could recall every single moment of his life. With a little focus he could lose himself in those memories. That was why he still struggled with memories of the war in Quacia and... Syroa.

The things he noticed were things that he had felt hints of while searching the notes within the explosive. The most prominent smell was the one that reminded him of pitch. It was a readily available resource in Scalvoris since it was helpful in the construction of boats. The smell wasn't exactly the same but that was close. Balthazar initially thought the difference was due to the fact it was mixed with other things but in the end he was only partially correct. Not all the smells he picked out were specific to the actual ingredients. Most were culminations of mixtures. One notable scent hid deeply among the rest of them.

Pine. It was a type of wood his senses were assaulted with when he was traveling Melrath once. Pine was wood. Wood wouldn't become liquid. It didn't have to. Trees had sap. Pine sap? What would that do? He could figure that out on his own in a much safer environment without the same precautions. For the time being he just noted the smell and would investigate it further once they all returned to Almund.

He was so absorbed in capturing every little detail that it took Lyanna shaking him for him to realize the damage that the blast had done. He spent so long in one moment that he didn't respond to those that followed- even when he saw them happening. As said earlier, it was easy to get lost. Most of his great discipline was always spent trying to act as he had before the sparks but they could never be fully contained.

After Lyanna shook him back into reality Balthazar realized the fallout of their first test. The cup at five feet was shattered and the one at eight feet fell over but nothing had happened to the one at ten feet. The strangest thing was that the tin plate was on fire. It burned orange so it wasn't the flame that Balthazar had created. Was the explosive still burning? Robin moved in to put it out with a splash of water but the flame survived its bath. Balthazar had to consciously put out the fire with his spark and even then it felt resistant. It didn't want to go out.

"Alright..." Balthazar's mind was turning. "Let's reset and do that again."
~ Several Single Drop Tests Later ~
BANG!

Balthazar kicked the wall in frustration. "I don't understand. What are we doing differently? Whats causing the changes?" Every single time they reset the testing room, they reset it the same. At first he thought it was the tin plate. He thought that maybe there was residue leftover from the first test so he got a new one but even that didn't get the same result as the first. He saw and smelled different things with each test to the point that figuring out a formula was going to be beyond him.

The possible damage was beyond him as well. Each test had a different kick behind it. One drop had shattered all the cups. One drop didn't shatter any of them. One drop actually went off like a firework which was remarkable to witness but frustrating in terms of the testing. None of the drops went off while Balthazar was putting them on the plate but it was getting to a point where that wouldn't surprise him. That would be dangerous.

"We need to stop." Robin insisted as he swept up the remains of the tin plate and shattered glass from the last test. The last test had the largest blast. It shook the walls and ignited the table that the plate had been on before it had a massive hole ripped through it. Balthazar had to put out the fire out actively again.

"I agree, this has gone from fun dangerous to losing my limbs dangerous and I don't like that." Lyanna concurred with Robin.

Balthazar took a deep breath and let his frustration flow out with the air. "I agree as well." And not just because he was running out of cups. He recognized that he had enough information to go forward. They couldn't develop something to counteract an explosive with unpredictable effects and whatever was under Almund was unpredictable in the highest terms. "Let me restore the roomLovalus has granted Balthazar the ability to conjure and manipulate a stream of purple flames which can encompass an individual or a large building (up to tier 4 in size, meaning three average rooms and a small room worth of space) in need of healing/repair. This purple flame is nothing like any conventional form of fire. Rather than give off heat, it seems to emit a cooling sensation like water and rather than burn it repairs damage done to whatever in surrounds slowly. This can be used to heal mortal wounds but it can not be used to restore life. Alternatively the flames can restore whatever building they encompass to immaculate condition, repairing damage done to foundations, windows, walls, etc. The purple flames leave a slightly damp sensation that lingers for a few bits after use and do not spread like normal flames would, they only spread as directed by Balthazar. These flames can only be conjured once a trial and require concentration to maintain, which in combination with their slow progress makes them ineffective in combat. and then I'll work on a portal to get us out of here." While Balthazar did that, the other two carefully packed up the rest of the materials that hadn't been damaged by the testing. They were happy that Balthazar agreed with them but they both knew what it meant. While they had a better understanding, they didn't have a solution to the explosives under the city.

Not yet.

Balthazar Black

Yeesh. Really wish I'd paid more attention in chemistry class. That aside - and you certainly made it accessible, which is a feat unto itself! - the actual telling of the tale was well-done, as expected. The assistants were a perfect counter to Bally's stern, determined, scholarly research. His frustration felt real, too, a vulnerability his fellows noticed and took steps to ease. Gonna be interesting seeing where this goes, now that I know Almund is basically floating on napalm...
