[City Square] A Message Made

Ashan 13th, 718
By boat and on the misty morning's tide, Zafir had arrived.

Ne'hear had changed much since the last time he had been in the holy city. Nine arcs was a long time to be gone from any place, and Zafir could hardly call the docks recognizable. Ne'haer had always been cosmopolitan clashing of cultures and religions that either meshed together or battled it out for supremacy. In that way, Zafir supposed, the city was much the region. So many different factions, people, and places that demanded their agenda be recognized. Conflict, chaos, and killing was just as much as part of Ne'haer's culture as was freedom, faith, and education. Zafir saw that first hand during his time Yurrova.

Stepping off the river boat and onto the docks proper, the Ellune nodded at the captain as he passed. A man of little means, Zafir had spent the twelve trial journey from Yurrova to the city of Ne'haer working for his passage. He would have to do the same for his return trip in the morning. His muscles aching and his mood foul, he headed towards a dockside inn in hopes of alleviating both an ailing back and an unquiet mind. Any alcohol at all would be a welcome distraction, and besides, the work that he had came to do could not be accomplished in this early morning.

He spent breaks just sitting and sipping his ale, watching people as he wrote. He had to pay the innkeep a few nel to borrow an inkwell, a quill, and for a few scraps of stray parchment, but he welcomed the chance to get his thoughts down on paper. He set a blank piece of paper aside for the majority of his writing, as he needed a final copy for his job, but he squeezed as much he could on both side of the thick paper. His mind had been racing since the start of this season, unable to keep quiet since Ne'haer had set down its sanctions. Zafir was lucky, he worked in the gem mines that produced much of Yurrova's wealth and as such was slightly protected from the hardship of the embargo, but even as early as it was Zafir could see the signs of strain in his community. Food would become scarce, wealth scarier still, and no one was really sure how people were meant to survive Ne'haer's politics.

Sighing, Zafir put his quill down and placed his heavy head in-between his ink-stained hands. No one knew in Yurrova knew what to do, and it seemed like nobody in Ne'haer even cared. The Ellune had sat in the tavern the whole day, and not once had he heard a word about his region's struggles. He just felt so angry, so twisted up inside. He wanted to, no, needed to do something.

Night fast approached. Ink dried on the separate paper as he carefully lifted it from the table, leaving behind his other two writs. He needed a statement, not a treatise. He walked out of the tavern, through the night streets of Ne'haer, and into the city square. Emptied out by the very late hour and the cold air, not a stray soul besides the Ellune graced the center of the city. Still, Zafir knew better to count on this luck for too long. He needed to work fast.

He approached the statue of Reasọä Euthik and circled until he found an blank side on its base. He placed his note on the ground beneath the great work, reading it once more.

Yurrova starves while you play at politics.

Taking the pointed end of his pick to the unmarred stone, Zafir began to carve.

Ne'haer had only recently become warmed now that the rains had passed, but the nights in Ashan often remained chilly when it came to roaming the streets. By this Break many were often settled into their homes or on their way to them, the end of the Trial almost nigh as much of the city took it's first breath of silence. The cooks finished closing their kitchens, the merchants by now closed their stores, and of course the laborers wrapped up last Bit tasks before calling it a night.

Much like the many local residents of the city one sort in particular had been on her way home, bound for the eastern side of the city towards her own private abode. Lady Amélien Petronel had already put aside her duties as one of Ne'haer's elected officials, her duties as a Council Member never seemed to end either; even when the Trials themselves did countless times. It was a chilly night within the city therefore she had worn her lush white trench coat out, with a frivolous cotton dress the colors of white and robin's egg blue. Blue suede shoes tapped against the natural stone of Ne'haer's Square, as she proceeded to release her blonde hair from the ponytail she'd kept it in earlier.

Such a tiresome Trial it had been. So many people required her attention, and so many obstacles remained unchecked as well. Ne'haer as a whole proved both a religious and political city, however the latter had been under much scrutiny and strain by several ambassadors. With the events of past seasons to consider, the city had a lot of ground to cover before it was out of the woods. Amélien had so much to do already that her duties seemed to pile on, and of course since the death of their Council Member Antony that occurred; the Council of Minäih as a whole somewhat floundered to maintain peace within the region.

All throughout the territories were many more numerous obstacles to face, each their own incredibly difficult challenge to overcome. Tensions were getting high between settlements, and it was to be expected since their Ambassador of International Affairs rested in the dirt. But Amélien loved her city dearly and worked hard, so hard that her passions never once dulled in the attempt to maintain it's welfare. Thus when she walked into the city square on her way home, her eyes fell upon a rather horrid sight as a large Ellune rested at the statue. What was he doing? Was that... a pickaxe?

She had heard the sound of metal grinding against stone as her steps slowed to a stop, the click of her heels more than indication another stopped close-by. Her tired face turned swiftly into an expression of utter disgust when she realized his action, and thus the Council Member approached the Eidisi with a fervent attitude. "How dare you!" She spat bitterly towards him once she stood a few feet away, the corners of her lips down turned at the sight of vandalism the man just committed. "That statue of Reasọä Euthik was commissioned by the mason's of The Seventh Hand! You would dare tarnish one of Ne'hear's greatest role models?!"

Her eyes moved from the Ellune to his note next to the statue, her hands rested on her hips as she demanded answers. "On whose authority do you have the right to vandalize Reasọä? And what's that parchment there close to your feet? Speak up!" Clearly she had little patience for men who did naughty things in the dark.

Juniper
13th of Ashan, of the 718th Arc

"A child at play keeps the frowns at bay"-Anonymous
[/b]
The actually rather large tunawa was sick and tired of feeling sorry for herself. For the most part, she'd done nothing but complain and whine all season. She'd been LUCKY to even get to Ne'haer. But now, it was like all her spark for adventure had gone away, and she knew it.

To-trial, she was going to do something fun! Maybe even mischievous! Something to get that thrill of adventure back into her! So what if she'd been stuck on a ship for...upwards of 240 trials. Yeah.. Sea travel wasn't going to be an option again for a good Bit. But so what? The entire rest of Cylus, she did nothing, absolutely nothing.

Sure she'd done a few things this season, but that was only because Bone had started to show just how worried about her she was. She couldn't do this to Bone, Bone needed a mother that was together. The bird wouldn't know how to cope without her. She knew it. Sure she'd managed on the ship without her, but that was because she knew where she'd been.

No, now was not the time to be pouty! Her foot was almost healed now! and she was starting to get her arm back too thanks to the new season! She smacked her face once before patting Bone's neck.

"We're going to go make some fun!"

In response to this, Bone screeched. Juniper chuckled and nuzzled herself into her bird's beak. This action seeming to be the only one that helped her keep calm anymore. She was going to have fun! She was going to make sure of it. With relative ease, she got onto Bone's back. Bone was a good girl, it made a lot of things easier.

Off they flew into the chilly night. As they flew so did the ideas in Juniper's head. What could they do that was fun and new? A wide smirk rose on her face. She leaned forward and spoke loudly.

"Just remember what I taught you Bone. You know what whistle means to come to me."

She patted her birds neck as she directed her bird to fly high in the sky. From the looks of it, they were just above the middle of the city, the entire city lay before them as Bone kept them level. Juniper closed her eyes for a moment, taking a slow deep breath. Bone screeched impatiently and Juniper smiled. Butterflies rolling in her stomach as she slowly let go of the reigns. She didn't have to look to know what was going to happen next. She could feel it, the feeling of complete weightlessness.
She was falling.
The rushing of the wind boomed against her ears as she fell in the sky above Ne'haer. Her heart soaring even as she fell. Her smile as big as it could possibly get. Slowly she opened her eyes and let out an excited scream loaded with laughter.

"YEAHAHAAAAAAAA! HAHAHA! TAKE THAT PIRATES! JUNIPER'S BACK!"

Juniper punched the air before her a few times, and then opened her arm and arm nub up above her head and her legs wide below her and she started wildly spinning. Her bay leaves getting in her eyes but she was too busy laughing to care. With one great big breath she put her fingers to her mouth and whistled as loud, long and high pitched as she could. She could feel it ringing in the air as the ground came closer and closer. Though it would be unlikely that those actually at the ground would be able to hear her whistle.

Just Trill's later, Juniper looked up with a great wide smile. Bone screeched as she dove towards her. One more deep breath and Juniper gave three short medium tone whistles, all slightly different than each other. Bone screeched back at her three times.

"Good girl."

Juniper said softly and reached out to her baby girl, whom had closed her wings to dive faster to get to her. That was it, Bone just had to catch her. Juniper's heart raced as she tried harder to reach out to her.

"That's it, come to mama!"

Bone screeched once more as she lunged for Juniper as she got close, but unfortunately for both of them, Bone's aim wasn't quite on the money, hitting Juniper square in the chest instead of grabbing her, nocking the literal wind out of her. Bone screeched in what sounded like despair as she sank below the spinning and flailing Juniper.

Juniper knew she had to do something, they were getting too close to the ground. Quickly, through the gasping, spun so that her rump was below her head and Bone was right beneath her.

"I hope you're ready Bone. We're putting on the breaks!"

Juniper opens her mouth, but this time, instead of whistles a high pitched, rolling trill like screech, this was not a call that Juniper ever used lightly, and Bone new it. It was their immediate brake and hover command. Normally this was a command that Juniper would use when a predator pops out of nowhere and she's trying to outmaneuver it. But this time Juniper had other plans.

Just as soon as the command came, Bone's wings popped open and she flattened out below Juniper, just like she'd wanted. She braced herself and practically crash landed into her bird who lost control for a second and flailed her wings in an attempt to get some sort of normality, Juniper broke into laughter as she quickly grabbed hold of the reigns again and made sure her feet were in the stirrups again. Slowly managing to sit up.

Lower and lower they went as Bone got her barings again, Juniper couldn't stop laughing, her heart still racing from the whole thing. Bone slowly straightened out and started to circle above a statue. Juniper though, wasn't paying attention and her steering caused the bird to go lower and run right into a pretty lady's shoulder.

Beak and tallons ramming right into the woman as Bone tried to stop the collision on her own, only to cause more damage, scratching roughly at the ladies right shoulder blade and screeching. Most likely, this wouldn't be a pleasant event for the lady, the talons of a Hen Harrier were no joke.

"No Bone! Off! Off! Oowwahh!"

Bone latched on the shoulder for a moment only to push off and fly straight for the man, knocking Juniper off balance. Bone managed to pull up but only causing Juniper to fall off once more and fall onto the blue man's shoulder. She hissed as her foot rammed right into the man's shoulder, reopening the sap clot as her hand reached out to grab the shirt on his back.

"Oooooow! Hey.. Blue!.. A little help here!?"

Breathing heavily and panting, there was a clear amount of fear in her voice. Juniper looked around, and saw Bone land on the statue just next to the mans pick. She sighed with half relief, but looked up as she felt her grip slipping. Of course she couldn't have grabbed a part where some of her sap had dripped. She cursed under her breath.

[City Square] A Message Made

Illumined by moonlight, Han had often thought that Ne’haer had the look of a city from a fairy tale. The white stone gleamed even in the relative darkness of the night, a welcome sight to see in the wake of Cylus. Of late, Han had often found himself walking the streets long after the setting of the sun, taking in the special kind of beauty one only found in the dark. The brilliant white stone, the stars in the sky, and the bracing, cold wind that came off the lake, they were good for the mind. Good for the soul. After so many arcs on the road, Han sometimes found it a little stifling to spend so much time in a comfortable home, even one so small and plain as his.

He was walking what had become, since the beginning of this cycle, his usual daily route once work and obligations had concluded. Starting from his home near the outer wall of the city, he charted a course towards the center of the city and from there would continue to the shore of Lake Rea. Once the trials got warmer and the weather became consistent, the city would stay awake and alive much longer after dark. For now, however, the lingering cold of early Ashan kept the streets relatively empty, save for those whose work preoccupied them and those who had no home to go to. Or, of course, those who, like Han, just wanted to walk.

It had been a good trial. A good cycle, really. Work had been going well and the cold weather meant he’d had more than one opportunity to bring someone in for the night. As helpful for keeping the fires stoked in his heart as it was for those he sheltered from the elements. He could never let himself slip in that regard- darkness waited at the door at all times, more vigilantly than any corporeal enemy. Seeing the needs of others and meeting them, it wasn’t just for them- it was just as important, if not more so, for Han. To remember always that there is good to be done yet and it is worth it, no matter the difficulty. Helping others kept that at the front of his mind and he would do whatever it took for whoever needed it to keep things that way. Anything to keep his darkness subdued and on the defensive. Ironic, he often thought, that the greatest motivation he had ever found for altruism was self preservation.

Before reflection and introspection could fully consume him, Han found himself rounding a corner into the city center, where the majestic statue of Reasoa Euthik stood. Normally, he would spend a few bits admiring the craftsmanship of it, but on this night, something was different. A bit of an altercation seemed to be brewing at the base of the statue. An incredibly large Ellune seemed to be taking a pickaxe to the statue. Han began to approach the Ellune, curious to know what he was doing and why, but Han didn’t seem to be the only one who had taken note. Before he could move more than a few paces, a woman advanced on the Ellune, harshly chastising him and demanding to know what he was doing. Han recognized the woman- Amélien Petronel, a council member. This was enough to give Han pause- as much as he didn’t really care for politics, he knew that the last place he wanted to be was standing between a member of the council and her prey. He retreated slightly, standing now at the edge of the city center, but remained present, just in case. The situation could play out many ways, and it was very possible that he could need to step in, but wisdom demanded that he wait for more information to reveal itself first.

It was then, as though Idalos itself sought to mock him for thinking this situation would play out with some semblance of normalcy, that a large bird- a hawk of some kind, perhaps- appeared seemingly from nowhere and crashed into the councilwoman, sending it’s tiny humanoid rider flying onto the back of the large Ellune- a Tunawa and her mount.

“Oh wow.” Han mumbled to himself, nodding his head slightly. “And here I thought things were interesting already.”

[City Square] A Message Made

Cailurion was not a city creature. She never had been, and she doubted she ever would; even Ivorian had been a necessary evil those years ago, tolerated only in exchange for purpose when she needed training and guidance. When both acquired, she took to the road with her comrades to serve Ivorian in the field, where stone walls did not crush and tower.

Spirits guide her, she hoped to find work in the open sooner rather than later.

The hour was dark, and Cylus still left its corpse in every breath of wind that rattled through the city. The ice and snow were on their way out, but the weather still paraded as if another blizzard was afoot, and the people were sensibly fleeing to homes and taverns.

Cailurion was still adjusting to the rhythm of city life, and had let time escape her as she settled Odd Thing in for the night. She set out for the Golden Flask roundabout sundown, and reached the city square well after nightfall.

She arrived to a curious sight, and paused at the very edge of the square.

Cailurion was a stranger to the customs of Na’hear, and she tried to fathom the meaning behind what she saw. Tried, and failed. An Ellune was by himself before a great statue, face pinched in pain or determination or anger, or perhaps all of them together. He lay down some parchment with writing Cailurion was too far to read, then took a pick and began to carve at the figure’s base.

Cailurion tilted her head, frowning slightly and wondering what claim the man had to that statue. It was public property, certainly, which she understood to mean that all citizens owned it in some way––though the man did not seem to want to own the thing so much as to change it.

He drew attention quickly. A woman saw him and took issue with the work, bearing down as soon as she saw what was happening and spitting indignant rage into the night. As her anger filled the air, others melted into the scene; first was a man who seemed to only be walking home, as Cailurion was, and second was a bird that pitched out of the sky and came to strike the woman’s shoulder, unseating a small rider who in turn struck the shoulder of the Ellune.

The man at the side of it all mumbled something out loud, something too soft for Cailurion to make out. The Ithecal tilted her head and took only a few steps closer to better hear the scene that was unfolding; she was no citizen and had no business with their public property, but something still seemed wrong about the Ellune’s actions––and she could always do to learn the ways of the city, and of what was happening around her.

[City Square] A Message Made

Zafir wasn't an artist, that was always more of Mirri's field. His brother, when he had the urge to be cruel, used to jape that he was so like the pickaxe that hung at his side, a being built to break things down. Seeing flecks of stone fall from the statue and cracks form on the craftsmanship, he couldn't help but agree. He was built to tear things down, but Zafir had learned from his times in the mines that sometimes structures needed to be removed so that the collective could move forward. Productive destruction. He couldn't help but laugh at the irony.

The carving war rough, but Zafir thought it was coming along nicely enough. Knowing his skill, he stuck to as simple shapes as possible. The jagged shape of Yurrova's waxing crescent moon had been cut into the base of the statue, defiantly visible against the otherwise smooth craftsmanship. Zafir couldn't recognize the artist, but he could guess where the stone came from. There weren't too many mines in the region as a whole, and due to Ironridge's and Lysoria's distaste for the capital, Zafir figured it must have its origin in Yurrova. He deemed it fitting that the stone supplied by his adopted home should at least bear its mark.

Next came the words, an overall simpler feat than trying to depict iconography. Long lines cut into stone by the razored-edge of his war-pick, a single word began to take shape. Yurrova. His home. The place that Ne'haer was all too ready isolate and extort for resources, either ignorant of or unwilling to acknowledge the impact of their presence and the ban they have placed has had on its people. He pushed the tip of his tool into the stone again, intending to carve more, only to be interrupted by the outraged voice of a woman.

Zafir nearly dropped his war pick out of shock, but managed to maintain enough composure to remain focused on the word he had just written. He didn't turn as the human demanded to know why he was here and why he was committing vandalism, instead he simply stared up at the statue that looked out over the city. Considering her words, he tilted his head to get a better view of the stone.

"It may have been commissioned by the masons of the Seventh Hand, but the stone was mined by workers in Yurrova," Zafir replied evenly, keeping his tone as measured as possible and his gaze on the statue. "Though I suppose most people in Ne'haer wouldn't know that. Wouldn't care to know. It does seem to be keeping in Ne'haeren tradition to take from the regions surrounding and forget about those who sweat and bled for your city." Shaking his head and turning towards the woman, Zafir chuckled grimly. It was a hollow, empty sound; one that rang dark and clear in the near empty night square.

"How dare I? You're right. I do dare. I know this statue well, and what represents too. There was a reason I picked it. I'm no stranger to these city walls and I've seen what great tragedies this city is capable of creating. I see it in Yurrova everyday. Our wealth is drying up because of these sanctions. People will starve, will hurt, and will die because of what Ne'haer has done," He paused for moment, grim inspiration taking root.

"You know, we miners have a joke we tell ourselves when the shift gets too long. Would you like to hear it?" Regardless of her response, Zafir pressed forward. Something about this woman, the wealth in which she dressed or the absolute disbelief that anyone could take issue with what this statue represented, something about her goaded him into this discourse. Yet, even as his temper ran higher and higher, he never raised his voice once. He didn't need to.

"Why are we digging such deep holes?" he asked, his words dripping venom.

"Well, we need to put the bodies somewhere."

Angry breath began to seep out of his nose, and Zafir looked away for a moment to collect himself. Losing his temper would only hurt his message, he knew that. Better to keep control and force her to face the facts of his region's reality. "I vandalize on those bodies' authority. Men, women, and children, abandoned and abused by Ne'haer, by Ironridge, and by your petty politics. And this," he gestured to the carving and the note next to the statue. He bent down and picked up the note, handing the scrap of parchment to the women. "This is a reminder that those bodies have worth."

Zafir had suspected he might be caught, and prepared his arguments accordingly. He could not, however, have prepared for a screeching bird with a Tunawa on its back rocketing out of the sky and into the woman's shoulder-blade.

The Ellune barely had time to voice his surprise before the bird deposited the Tunawa on his shoulder. He had never seen such a small creature before, and her hanging onto the cloth which clung to his meaty shoulder might have been a humorous sight were there not a human bleeding in front of him. Not exactly sure what to do, or even how to react to such a rapid turn of events, Zafir stood shocked for a fleeting moment, anger replaced with surprised urgency, before hurriedly scooping the strange creature into the palm of his hand.

"Would you please try to get your damned bird under control? My intention tonight was not to cause a scene," He sighed in frustration and mumbling under his breath. "Though I suppose it is already too late for that." Placing the Tunawa down on the ground, then proceeding to remove his shirt at the the sight of the human's continued injury. Holding it out to her, Zafir motioned to her shoulder.

"Wrapping it up will help stop the bleeding, I've seen medics do it in the mines. Go on, take it. I hate your city, not you."

[City Square] A Message Made

Amélien had watched the Ellune still with scornful and judgmental eyes as she expected him to respond immediately, to fess up to the crime he had just committed and accept what lecture she had in store. She was many things and temperament was one of the more defining words, namely so because she wound up showing more restraint the further she listened. A Yurrovan miner had come to their doorstep to spite their city and the politics. She felt pity for the man then as she could only bear in mind the accord the city had with Yurrova, and how recent events have definitely put a strain on that. Still heavy on the eyes she watched him sternly with her arms crossed next, the Council woman merely huffed as she took his words with a grain of salt.

"So you would think it justice to vandalize a crucial piece of history, rather than approach the court or council with these appeals? How can Ne'haer acknowledge a problem exists when you're idea is to tarnish one of the few good symbols of the city? Yes the stone originates from the mines of Yurrova, but that does not give equal right to disrespect those who donated it to the city!" She approached him but only to swipe up the note he had at his feet, the parchment opened to reveal the message he'd written within. Yurrova starves while you play at politics. "A critical message that could've carried much farther," She looked from it down to the blue skinned giant, "had you not gone and decided to vandalize something so dear to Ne'haer."

With that said she folded the parchment and proceeded to tuck it within her jacket pocket, a hand rested on her hip as she continued to protest his actions. "I can understand the scorn you and your people feel in Yurrova, Ne'haer's certainly done a piss poor job trying to uphold it's end of the bargain. Not that it's any of your concern as you obviously don't care," She plainly said to him outright with a tuck of her bangs, "but Ne'haer's politics have been heavily strained and tested lately. We've had to deal with pirate attacks and that's just the start of it, Ne'haer itself desperately works hard to get back on it's feet. You can't expect a city to repay it's debts when outside forces proceed to knock us down, what good does it do when-"

Her voice became cut off.

A bird of some kind swooped down to crash into her shoulder and claw into it, a shriek given as she swatted the creature off and away from her. With a hand then pressed on her shoulder, she stepped back a few paces with distraught eyes on the creature. A Tunawa. One that evidently lacked any sense of self control, since she clearly lacked control over her winged mount. Amélien's lips were down-turned as she sourly looked at the two, surprised to see that the Ellune responded in an unexpected fashion. He didn't want to cause a scene? So what then? Did he plan to just ruin the statue and leave it be? Had he even considered being caught by the authorities, let alone someone who was on the Council?

The lady assessed the injury and the damage done to her coat, a brief sigh as she already knew the fabric tarnished from the injury. "Huh?" Her eyes were upon the shirt the Ellune presented, a hesitation in her arm as the hand slowly reached for it. Even if his actions were questionable it seemed his character was not. Truthfully it opened Amélien's eyes when she saw this and she realized, Yurrova and Ne'haer both could benefit from someone with his character. "Thank you." She muttered appreciatively as the fabric was taken calmly. She had words to share to be sure but first... her eyes fell upon the Tunawa that caused the injury.

"You should consider lessons if you're going to fly rampantly throughout the streets of Ne'haer little one, it wouldn't do if we received multiple reports of a bird tearing apart our citizens; all because one Tunawa can't seem to contain her need for fun." She insinuated as she further eyed the little woodland creature, aware of the fact she was already missing a limb as well as portion of another. Both on the left side. Clearly this daring creature had a knack for trouble. Amélien sighed once more and knelt down with the shirt loosely tightened on her shoulder, a hand brought down pick up the Tunawa from underneath. "What name do you go by Tunawa? And you as well Yurrovan?" She shot a glance to him as she raised the tiny creature with her hand, her lips somewhat turned into a smile as she felt for the creature.

"I am Amélien Petronel of the Council of Minäih, and on behalf of the Council I welcome you both to our city." For what it was worth. She knew the Ellune had little regard for Ne'haer, however given the circumstances this could very well change that. "We have a sanctuary you're people stay within young one," She murmured to the Tunawa once more, "if you stay there a while surely you will find your form restored after some time." She murmured to the creature, hopeful that would bring hope to the little creature.

Juniper

"Huh... but I.."

She stuttered and then found herself stumbling on the ground. She would have stamped her foot if it wasn't already sapping and causing her enough pain. She huffed angrily, sure she interrupted something, and she accidentally ran into someone. But she'd clearly tried to stop it. But obviously she was a villain for having an accident!?

"Excuse me!? My baby didn..."

Again interrupted she looked up to the woman who did actually take the shirt from the man. Hadn't they just been fighting? She stumbled backwards and her eyes widened as the woman spake and leaned down starting to reach for her.

"S.. Stop n.. no I didn't m.. mean it! Sure I was just trying to have some fun. I wanted my spark for adventure back. P.. please don't. Ahh! Woah!"

The Tunawa's breath was quick and uneven, her eyes wide as she found herself falling over and falling into the woman's hand. She was shaking. No! No! Not again! Please no! The Tunawa sat frozen in the woman's hand, her reopened wound sapping on her soft palm. Just then though, she blinked, quite a few times as if she was trying to assess what she'd just heard from the human's lips. Like it didn't make sense.

Bone screeched and started to display her feathers, puffing up from the base of the statue at the woman. Juniper snapped to it and turned a bit in the woman's hand. She looked at the woman and then at her bird and did one low, soft whistle in her birds general direction. Immediately the bird backed off and tilted it's head for a moment before starting to preen it's feathers. Slowly, Juniper breathed out, still shaking in the woman's hand.

"J...Juniper's my name..."

She looked like she was about to cry as she curled up in the woman's hand. She didn't seem like she wanted to be in her hands at all. She even turned her head away when she heard the information about the sanctuary.

"N.. Nothing can keep me safe from you humans. Humans did this to me.. why should I... trust..."

She paused and looked up at the woman, slowly, her hand found the woman's thumb. Slowly she took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Curling up into a ball, making her look even smaller, spreading some of the sap along the woman's palm.

"I'm sorry... My baby... My darling Bone didn't mean to hurt you... I... was only trying to... revamp my spirits.. and just so happened to make a mistake... It's not easy... leading a bird with only one hand..."

She opened her eyes slowly and gave a weak smile.

"My form will restore whether I stay here or not.. I don't... want to be trapped in one place.. ever again.. ever...again.."

Sap spilled from the edges of her eyes. She was so scared, so vulnerable, her strong spirit there but broken. She just sat there in the woman's hand shaking. Then next words out of her mouth just barely a whisper.

"P.. Please... put me down..."

[City Square] A Message Made

’Alright then, so we’ve got an Ellune possibly making political statements with a pickaxe, and looks like the councilwoman is grabbing the Tunawa? Wait…' They were at a slight distance but Han swore he saw a distinct lack of arm on the Tunawa- It had to be Juniper. He breathed a deep, heavy sigh. 'Looks like I don’t have a choice now.' They’d only met once, but if there was one thing he got from her on that occasion, it was her distrust of humans, and now she had not only hurt one, but hurt an important one. ’Maybe if I explain that she’s my friend, there will be lenience. Maybe. Why do I make friends again’? He sighed heavily and began briskly walking toward the trio. Exasperated as he seemed, he was prepared to do whatever he might need to, if it meant securing his friends safety. He hoped that that would merely be negotiation or a few sincere apologies.

’Hello, Councilwoman. Please accept my sincere apologies on behalf of my friend… No, too formal. Please, if you are angered, punish me instead… No, too martyr-y. Why am I doing this again?' His mental rehearsals yielded dubious results. He’d have to wing it. As he reached close to halfway across the courtyard, the scene came into clearer focus and he could hear that someone- he presumed Juniper- was speaking with the councilwoman. She sounded pitiful, maybe even crying- though he could not hear exactly what was said. Han was both concerned and ever so slightly angered at that revelation- nobody was going to torment his friends.

Nearly there, he glanced quickly at the statue and finally laid eyes on the handiwork of the Ellune: “Yurrova starves while you play at politics”. The statement, the medium, and the implications therein chilled Han to the bone, in contrast to the anger he had previously felt. He took a moment to look over the Ellune in passing as he approached- he was huge. He looked fit for mining, that was certain. But far more than anything else, the thing that stood out was his face- he had a look about him that spoke volumes. Even as he seemed to be offering the shirt off of his own back to the councilwoman, Han could see he was angry. But not just that, he looked pained. This wasn’t just some random act of political vandalism- it was personal. Han made a mental note of it and of the Ellune himself- if he wasn’t jailed by nights end, he decided he would very much like to have a word.

Finally reaching his destination, Han wasted no time before butting in and beginning his defense of Juniper.

“Please forgive my Tunawa friend, lady councillor- I can vouch that she meant no harm. If there must be a punishment exacted, please let me be the one to pay.” To be honest, he had no idea whatsoever of the nature of the situation, but he knew his friend was reduced to tears- or sap, or whatever Tunawa did- and he wasn’t just going to let it go.

[City Square] A Message Made

As the moments passed, Cailurion drifted softly closer to where the Ellune and the human quarreled - though that quarrel was soon trapped between pity and anger in equal measure. Cailurion’s eyes narrowed as the conversation unfolded, teeth sliding impatiently against her teeth as she came to realize where each person stood – one who demanded the right to survive, and one who acted as if he was somehow at fault for it.

The Ithecal had passed through Yurrova not long ago, and she had seen the suffering there.

A growl clung to the tip of her tongue, held back by teeth and willpower alone, until the bird was untangled and the Tunawa was crying and everything had paused on their account.

Cailurion crossed the final distance between her and the rest, a yard or so behind the man that had also lingered. As he addressed the woman and Tunawa, Cailurion circled in to the Ellune.

She noted the rough ”Yurrova” chiseled into the stone, and turned her eyes to the councilwoman.

“Why do you act as if you are the injured party?” Cailurion asked softly. “If Na’hear makes empty promises, this man is not to blame for your deception. Perhaps if you paid more attention to the living than you pay to the dead, less of your people would be dying.”

The Ithecal took one deliberate half-step to shield the gigantic miner from the councilwoman, then turned for a brief moment to glance over her shoulder at the Ellune. She kept hold hold of the questions itching to escape – her questions for him did not belong in this open city square.

And so Cailurion simply stood in solidarity, one foot between the two and nothing remaining to be said. The matter of the Tunawa still needed seeing to, but the Ithecal had no opinion nor motivation to intervene; the human man seemed well enough underway.

The little wooden thing was crying, folding in on herself at the prospect of punishment. Her bird fussed worriedly on the outskirts, though it did not seem to have dealt real damage to the councilwoman. At most it had wounded the woman’s pride, though Cailurion thought it possible she would take that just as seriously.
