Ymiden 10, Arc 723
Tristan had a pretty good idea what the next step would be. So far, Ensorcelling seemed to have a lot in common with sculpting and working with stone in general, apart from the whole magic aspect. He was about to lean over to Philomena in order to share his suspicion with her, but then he remembered what Lucius had said and straightened himself instead trying his best to act as if nothing had ever happened. He wasn’t doing a very good job at all – he could almost feel himself blushing – but fortunately their teacher was too busy with something else to look.
Like most of his classmates, Tristan had hoped that the cat cadouri would change his mind about using real wells or just forget what he had been saying. Unfortunately, it seemed as if the Lumite he had shown them before really wouldn’t make a comeback though. Instead, Lucius produced a remarkably clean, but incredibly lumpy gray rock. Seemingly unaware of his students’ disappointment, he proclaimed, his tail swishing back and forth, “I will demonstrate the next step on this rock, and then you will try your best to repeat it on your practice wells. I hope you still have them, and they are still reasonably clean?”
A few students nodded or said yes, and Lucius continued, “The next step is called cutting. Using the tools I will give you in a few moments, you will remove material from the surface of the rock until it has the desired shape, an orb, an oval or a diamond, for example. Again, it is important to be precise and careful”, he warned them and produced a large box that he sat down on the desk of the student that sat closest to him.
“I want each of you to take a set of chisels and hammers”, he told them.
“Why didn’t you already give us each a set of tools in the beginning, when we learned about Ensorcelling tools?” one student, a young man with bright green eyes and messy brown hair, wanted to know. “We could have familiarized ourselves with them while you were talking!”
“Exactly”, Lucius retorted in a dry tone of voice and met the young man’s gaze, his ears twitching. “I wanted you to pay attention to what I was saying rather than playing with your tools.”
Tristan inclined his head because he kind of agreed with that statement before he briefly looked at Philomena triumphantly because his suspicion had been correct. They were going to cut rocks!
Philomena raised an eyebrow and looked at him in confusion because she could – obviously – not read his mind, and he hadn’t said anything to her, and then she shrugged her shoulders and went to work, as best she could. Which wasn’t very good. Unlike Tristan, she had never worked with stone before. She worked with cloth and needles and similar things!
