It made Vega want to punch her.
But, equally, Vega knew that Lily meant it. It was just the deep level of unrealistic which wound the daughter of Faldrun up oh-so-very-much. Vega was hopeful, but she was realistic. She believed the best would happen and things would work out in the end - but she also believed that she had to work for that. For Vega, Lily's optimism wasn't optimism at all - it was willful ignorance. She saw no darkness, and that was a falsehood. When her cousins had first married the "useless twins" as Vega had dubbed them, she had found the girls shallow and largely pointless. She still thought that - but despite that, they were nice, kind people. Vega found it hard to come to terms with, but basically, they were both a bit thick in an inexcusable way.
But, Lily was kind an soft and gentle and she wanted to help. So Vega smiled. "Thanks Lilly-bud," she said. "I reckon they're pretty talented, you know. They picked it up quick, anyhow." Lilly nodded. "We're going to do the feathers this afternoon?" Vega nodded. Lilly lifted one of the etchwing feathers and smiled. "I like these," she said. Vega resisted the urge to roll her eyes. "They're so pretty."
Vega looked at Lily and shook her head. "I don't know whether I envy you or not you know. I mean, they are pretty. But they're from a dead bird." Lilly looked at Vega and nodded. "I'm sure the creature would be happy to know that it sacrificed itself for such a good cause," she said. Vega looked at her. "Lily. It didn't sacrifice itself, it got murdered. By me. An' it weren't a noble cause, but it tasted righ' nice in the pie last night." Lilly sniffed slightly. "Noble and majestic." Her words showed her own stubbornness and Vega chuckled as she caught Reese's gaze. Immortals help him, but that boy was totally stricken with this idiot, Vega thought. She prayed to Xiur that they found the world the place Lily saw it as. It would be a lovely place. "So," she said, desperate for a change of subject. "You'll help me with basketweavin' an' stuff later? That still ok?"
Being where they were, Vega wanted to make some basked for crabs and for picking cockles and so on. Lily nodded eagerly. "I'm looking forward to it! Sister time!"
Vega nodded. "Good oh, love. Thanks." Making no comment about "sister" time, she motioned to where there were six people already waiting.
"Come on then," she said. "Lets get on with the next bit."
