Pressing Matters (Beacon)
“…for what is a Beacon without a light, and what is a light without fuel?” Thus does Fenta Fumewort, proprietress of Pressing Matters, pitch the value of her business to the community. Farmers from Beacon and its environs bring their oilseeds to Fenta: poppy, turnip, rapeseed, flaxseed, almond, walnut, from which she presses various oils for cooking, lighting, and lubrication. The leftover seed cakes are useful, as well, for fodder and soil mulches. Fenta has recently learned that oils are useful as a base for inks and paints, and is starting to experiment with making and selling these products, as well.
Pressing Matters is located in a compact stone building on the edge of Beacon, only one storey of which is above ground. This upper floor is where the shop front and storeroom are. The press is located in a large, vaulted chamber underground. Fenta, with her enormous physical strength, is able to operate this press herself, without need of animal or fancy machinery.

Other Information: Customers are often surprised and sometimes dismayed by the hulking reptilian that greets them under the name “Fenta Fumewort” when they first enter Pressing Matters. But the proprietress is actually just as friendly and whimsical as her name suggests, and is always somewhat pained by the distress and anxiety her admittedly intimidating appearance can provoke.
In addition to her friendly personality, people are often surprised by Fenta’s intelligence and lively interest in a wide variety of subjects; when not working she can often be seen reading books on anything from botany to bricklaying. Her wide-ranging interests result in her being something of a jack-of-all-trades, but her assorted knowledge is always practically-oriented.
This includes her painting, which she pursues mainly to gain an understanding of the oil paints she helps produce. Her actual canvases tend more to be abstract studies in What Paints Can Do than they are attempts to portray or express something. Nonetheless, some afficionados in town profess an appreciation of her work as art, and will sometimes offer to buy it. Fenta mostly finds this interest amusing although, as with all her customers, she is happy to provide these would-be patrons with what they want.
Fenta’s forebears were slaves in the Ivorian Empire. She does not like to talk about this, nor about how she herself managed to escape or avoid slavery. This legacy has left her with both a strong work ethic and a fierce jealousy of her own independence and liberty.
