Deacon's demeanor is typically calm, focused, and serious, although he can flash a surprisingly bright smile when something delights him. When dealing with strangers, his default attitude is just on the friendly side of polite and reserved. With his friends is warm and cheerful, although not especially boisterous.
Deacon Brachland is the only son of the late Cuthbert and Petra Brachland. Cuthbert and his brother Canton were both successful farmers, with the slightly older Cuthbert being the better gardener and farmer, while Canton was the sharper businessman. Cuthbert was a Favored of Vhalar, and was a fine illustrator as well as farmer. Flush with the proceeds from a few good arcs' worth of crops, and heartened by the prospects opened up following the departure of the Pirate Lords, he borrowed a large sum of money to start a new venture on Faldrass, one that he hoped would secure a prosperous future for his family. Instead, he and his wife both perished in the Faldrass eruption of 720, leaving Deacon as financially bereft as he was emotionally.
Against his brother's advice, Cuthbert had literally bet the farm on the success of his new business venture, and Canton was unable to prevent its forclosure. He was, however, able to purchase most of the land back, at a discount price, from Cuthbert's creditors, who were eager to sell off the distressed property.
Deacon retains ownership of a modest farmhouse and a tiny allotment of surrounding property. To make a living, however, Deacon is reliant on work his uncle offers on his farm.
