Politics (Skill)

{{#pagetitle: Politics}}
=Overview=

Politics as a skill is concerned with forming ties to people, factions, and ideologies, convincing others to follow those paths with promised results, and managing a government or other political entity. Whether these entities encompass entire nation-states, factions within such a nation-state, an entirely independent organization outside the purview of any particular nation, or other similar entities, is merely a matter of scale. Similar principles apply across the board, and there's rarely widespread agreement when it comes to the correct method of implementing and executing a policy, whether it concern governance, the legislation, implementation, and interpretation of the law, or supporting activist forces for change. It's the challenge of finding compromise or resolution between parties, in order to achieve one's goals, that is the central challenge of any political agent.

Interpersonal politics, between solitary individuals, is a central building block of broader political action. Often enough in the cases where diplomats, ambassadors or representatives of organizations gather for any purpose, such encounters can and do influence much greater entities, encompassing more than the individuals themselves.

What distinguishes a skill like Politics from a skill like Logistics, is that Politics is focused on the management of people, their beliefs, their allegiances and their actions. Logistics typically only deals with the management and movement of resources.

=Political Knowledge and Awareness=

Awareness of a political situation, both within one's own political entity, within the subordinates, and external organizations can be vital to the execution of policy and political action/management. Knowledge of treaties, political alliances, agreements, and where one's allegiances, and more can only enhance one's political skill. More often it's a mix of Intelligence and interpersonal communication that lead one to uncovering such information. Yet, skill at politics confers an understanding of how that information may be applied to the situation at hand, as it concerns political action and management. That is what sets intelligence knowledge apart from politics knowledge.

=Political Management=

Political Management concerns the methods, mechanics, and influence over the apparatus of power, by those who are a part of the power structure. Typically, political management is within the sphere of councilors, monarchs, advisors, and generals, although those outside the power structure can also benefit from skill and knowledge of these methods.

==Warfare==

Often the default mode of political relations for when two entities cannot see eye to eye, are ideologically opposed, and/or are in direct competition for resources. Warfare as a form of political management is the purview of soldiers both great and small, from the lowliest enlisted to the highest Marshal. A politician skilled at war can bring conflicts to a close with minimal application of force and loss on their own side, with maximal gain assured from their opponents.

Re: Politics (Skill)

Please do! It's why I shared the picture, lol.

Lessee, how about this write-up, shall we...
Politics as a skill is concerned with forming, coordinating, and governing groups of people.
While not wrong, the phrasing makes this sound too much like logistics to me. The decision-making aspect of governing, ties to factions, people, and/or ideologies, and convincing others to follow those paths with promised certain results, is what distinguishes Politics from Logistics... so perhaps mentioning something like that sooner in the very start of the overview?
Interpersonal politics, between solitary individuals, is a central building block of broader political action. Often enough in the cases where ambassadors or representatives of organizations gather for any purpose, such encounters can and do influence much greater entities, encompassing more than the individuals themselves.
I like this. Another term that could be used here; Diplomat.

Also, like Political management.

The rest of the subsections (Warfare, Diplomacy, Governance, Legislation) feel very bare being only about a sentence or so. I think either including more explanation in their summaries, or just listing them rather than having subsections might be a better formatting choice? Though I like the specifically aligned complimentary skills for each section. Might want to add Psychology under Diplomacy as a related skill.

Corruption seems different than the other ones listed... mainly because one can have corruption in any of the previously mentioned paths. At the same time, I think it does deserve its own section. ...Maybe it'd be suited more for under "Forms of Political Action"?

Same thing with that section as well, where it feels very skeletal due to the way the formatting will header the subsections (Patronage, Terrorism, Revolution). Hmm.. Another way to handle this is if the Complimentary skills are literally listed in list format, rather than in sentence format. That could do it.

Skill Ranks

Looks good, except I'm not sure about the phrasing of this line in Novice: "The treaties, agreements, and alliances they form will prove detrimental to their agenda, and work against their organization."

That seems like a very heavy blanket sweep for something detrimental. Maybe.... more... the treaties, agreements, and alliances the form will prove "ineffective, if not accidentally detrimental and often work against the goals of their organization" ??? Something more like that, perhaps.

I like the split path of diplomat vs. activist. Also, the underlying hint of stability vs. destabilization.

Because there is no "legal/law" skill, I think politics can also fill this so I like that legislator/lawyer is included in the competent tier of this.

suggested edit in expert: "destabilize a well and deeply entrenched organization." ...I first read that as they're gonna be destroying a Well. like an ether well. Which... not a bad idea for terrorism, but I don't think that's what you were going for.

Awesome write-up for the master tier! Even if "There is no change that is too difficult" is a bit extreme... I still like it!

Overall, great write-up. These are just suggestions, so take or leave whatever you want. Looking forward to this skill having been developed!

Thanks so much for the thoughtful feedback, I went ahead and made the suggested changes, as well as filling out a bit more of the skeletal categories of management and activism. Let me know if there's anything else I missed or should add-to/change.

Re: Politics (Skill)

Oh My God.....

That picture is SOOOOO how I imagine my newest hero Marshall, Hinda Velora, to look in about 5 arcs...lol
Right down to the incorporation of red features in her attire, in this case the gloves and cloak.
Red is the color of Marshall rank in Etzos.
No-nonsense attitude, drink in hand, a look that says she's ready to either throw you into bed or out a window.
And knows that she can do it.

Now as to the write-up:

I may be nit-picking here, but I think a small section or paragraph should be devoted to what I view as the "passive" aspect of the Politics skill.
I see this as simply the amassing of knowledge of those nations you will be targeting with all the approaches and goals you have down.

All those things are spot-on. But the fact of having the knowledge to do them effectively seems to be assumed.

Also, there is something I think has not been done before in ST.
In addition to relative skills, I think the mention of a PC or NPC's "Reputation" may be worth mentioning here.
Especially as it applies to the military aspects.
A general with a long, storied history of crushing victories is going to have far more impact on a truce conference than a newcomer that has no successful experience.

There are other skills that could also have mentioned Reputation, that I don't recall them having, and I wish I would have thought of it sooner.
Stuff like Persuasion, Intimidation, Negotiation, even Story-Telling.

But since I would not want to go back and amend them, perhaps we should not include it here.

Re: Politics (Skill)

Hey, Malt. I added the following paragraph to the top of the write-up:

=Political Knowledge and Awareness=

Awareness of a political situation, both within one's own political entity, within the subordinates, and external organizations can be vital to the execution of policy and political action/management. Knowledge of treaties, political alliances, agreements, and where one's allegiances lie, and more can only enhance one's political skill. More often it's a mix of Intelligence and interpersonal communication that lead one to uncovering such information. Yet, skill at politics confers an understanding of how that information may be applied to the situation at hand, as it concerns political action and management. That is what sets intelligence knowledge apart from politics knowledge.

As for renown, I'd rather not tie it to the skill, as someone might not be very well known but be able to maneuver politically very well. Such as a spymaster type character, or someone ruling from behind the scenes such as an advisor. I'd leave whether renown comes into play up to the player character in question.

Thanks for the feedback, was tremendously helpful!
