Down By the River (Nir'wei)

The surrounding lands of Rharne boast several towns and settlements that lie on the northern shores of the River Zynyx. This includes Mistral Village, Caervalle Town, Zynyx Market and Volta.

Down By the River (Nir'wei)

Cylus 4, 719

Auya and Laramy made their way out of Mistral Village, heading westward toward the wooded land they'd staked claim on. No one lived there and after asking around the village, it seemed that no one owned it. So they claimed it for themselves, to begin construction on their new business venture. It was early in the trial, not that anyone could tell in Cylus. Laramy was bundled up against the cold, but Auya's gift of being Hot Blooded from Faldrun kept her comfortable in her cotton blouse and leather slacks.

They carried the axes they'd been using for the last few days, to work on clearing the trees. They'd set up a nice system, they'd fell the first tree together, then one would get busy clearing it of branches, preparing it for later use. They would waste none of the lumber. Once the pair entered the tree line, the light given off by the moons dropped low. Auya conjured up a flame and kept it close to her, acting as a torch to light their way along the trail they'd been using.

Laramy wasn't much of a talker in the morning, but Auya still liked to pester him. "Not too many more trees to take down. Then we can start on the stumps." The man snorted and Auya smiled. They both knew the stumps would be the worst part. "Have you picked where you want the new house for you and the kids? We'll build that up first."

"South side. Away from the river."

"Away from anyone who might annoy you?"

He snorted again, and she just laughed as they continued on the trail. Her plot of land was roughly fifteen bits outside the village, right on the water. A caravan trail ran right through the middle of it, which was perfect for her. Start her business off with travelers in the villages, move onto river shipments. A high traffic area was ideal. Once they reached her land, as signified by the burnt handprints she'd put in the border trees, they made their way to where they'd last been working.

The first thing they always did was check the immediate area, make sure there weren't any animals that might surprise them while working. Auya called upon her Corona, wrapping her entire body in a small layer of flames, reabsorbing the wisp light she'd had out previously. Laramy kept his trusty axe ready as they walked the perimeter, making as much noise as possible, to startle off anything that might be close. "Ilaren's tits dat shit is bright in the mornin'."

"Brighter than the flame between them ears, that's for sure."

Laramy snorted as the pair continued their sweep.

Nir had never really thought of the Stormlands as a dangerous place, if he was quite honest. The Stormwastes, yes, absolutely; it was a miracle anything could live there at all, never mind the monsters that inhabited it now. The Stormlands, though? No, surely not. Green grass and tall trees, fields stretching over gentle rolling hills? It looked beautiful, even when it streaked by in a blur from atop Vabina as she tore through the landscape with a thunderous gallop. Then again, that was before he'd heard about the latest roving pack of Thundermaws spotted by local Justiciars edging dangerously close to the outskirts of the Mistral Village. More to the point, he'd heard what a Thundermaw was. From all the descriptions he'd been given he still couldn't even imagine what they looked like. Large dogs with tiny serrated teeth, antlers, blue fur with fiery orange manes? Four eyes? Acid bites and long whip-tails with a club?! It sounded like a joke in all honesty. How in Ilaren's name could something like that grow in a place like this?

Whatever, he wasn't worried. Apparently they only went after easy meals, and everyone knew to keep on their guard, so they'd likely pass within a few trials in hopes of finding some better prey. He'd just been pulled down to Mistral for a little added security, him and several other initiates and knights with the fastest mounts. Xithyria, unable to ride a horse, was forced to stay behind in the city, though he certainly wasn't complaining either. Come to think of it, he'd never seen the Ithecal leave the city walls... though he'd never accuse him of being a coward, there must be something more to it. "We're coming up on it now," Greyhide suddenly announced. So they were.

He'd brought most of his full ensemble with him tonight. Vabina, of course, Greyhide was a given, and Cold, Myrth and Squeak all bringing in the rear guard. Even though it was supposed to be a routine thing, not even an official mission and more of a casual request, it never hurt to come prepared. Though, as he squinted over the still-distant lights of the village, he realised that all of it was probably for naught anyway. Moonlight was fine, at least they weren't totally blind, but looking for black-furred animals in perpetual night; no wonder there was so much concern around a few sightings. "See anything?" he asked jokingly with a little laugh.

Greyhide's response was a little more serious than he'd expected. "Moving lights up ahead. Weird ones, too. Just off to the side of the path." He didn't elaborate, but then again he didn't really need to. For the better part of their night they'd been following a winding path that led around the edge of the Mistral Village, doing a little sweep from east to west via the south pass, following some old game trails and the like, but as they grew closer the path widened into a proper set of wagon tracks, well-worn by passing merchants and travellers. Probably just some out-of-towners struggling to find a place to rest their head for the night. Day. Whatever it was.

"Hey-o! Everything alright over here?" he called out into the darkness as he approached.

Re: Down By the River (Nir'wei)

Auya and Laramy continued their circuit, when they heard someone call out to them. They both stiffened up. While Flameborn and animals were a more prominent threat, bandits and thieves weren't exactly off the list of potentials. Auya severed the Corona, not wanting to be an easy target. Laramy stepped between her and the road, where the voice had come from.

Auya reached out and gripped Laramy's shoulder, her other hand gripping her bo staff. She called back out to the darkness, "We're fine. Show yourself please. It's dark and I don't know your voice." Laramy walked the direction the voice had come from, axe raised. Auya slipped her hand from him, bringing it to the staff, holding it for comfort more than showing any skill with it.

She didn't want whoever it was to know that Laramy was here until they saw him. Just in case. "I'm just out here, gathering lumber. What brings you by at this break?" She could hear rustling through the dark growth, and raised her staff high, before a boy came through the brush. He was hard to see in the moonlight at this angle. Then she saw his facial hair. Not a boy. Just a really short man.

Auya and Laramy just stood there defensively. They were not about to attack someone at random, but they were also not going to let their guards down against a stranger. "Who are you? What do you want?"

At the reply, he nodded and raised his hands, making sure to show them far away from the bow and quiver slotted over his back in its leather case - and the longsword sheathed at his hip as well. "A fair request. My weapons are sheathed, please don't be alarmed by my company. They're well-fed I assure you." One high-pitched trilling whistle ordered the wolves to stop and hold their position; a second, lower whistle shifting to a higher tone mid-way through brought Vabina to her haunches as well. He wasn't really sure how to show himself in the darkness but slowly walking towards the sound of their voices seemed like a safe enough bet, so he kept moving.

"The light's gone. You've got one approaching you from the front, axe. Big one." Damn those wolf-eyes, when was he going to get some of his own to see so well in such low light? "Eventually. If you live that long." The voice was coy, tinged with concern. Either they were jumpy, or they weren't as friendly as they sounded. By the time reached the axe-wielding guy and found he wasn't swinging for the face, he nodded in relief. Just jumpy, then. Thank Karem for that.

As his eyes adjusted and caught a smaller red-headed woman his muscles tensed briefly. Not by much, but enough. In the wake of the attacks it was a pretty natural reaction, he'd always rationalized. Even before that there'd always been a little bit of a stigma around the red hair and wild eyes of an Aukari. An agent of Faldrun, born to kill. Then again, that Sev'ryn had killed too, just as quickly, just as mercilessly. Did that mean there were some Aukari like him? "Taking a walk. Out looking for things that shouldn't be here." The moment the words left his lips he realised just how inflammatory it sounded. "N-Not you. Karem, not you, I meant, I was looking for, well, you see, they're... okay, okay." He raised his hands higher and shied away instinctively. "I'm just out here looking for, following up on, well. Uhh. There's talk of wild animals coming out under the cover of night and stringing up those that stray a little too far from the herd, if you know what I mean. Hungry after the big freeze and looking for some easy meat after hibernation." Well, more or less. "Name's Nir'wei, and uhh. Could say I'm a bit of an animal wrangler. So I came out to see if the rumours were true. Turns out they're probably not though. Uhh, saw some glowing over here, thought it might be them. They're known to glow, a little."

He chuckled a little bit, though the gesture was more from nervousness than humour. Neither of them struck as particularly friendly, though then again he hadn't exactly expected it, but it still didn't help his nerves. "I'm fully aware it's not my place to ask or intrude or anything but... this probably really isn't a good time to be getting lumber. Or being out in the woods, at all. Everything can see you, hear you, smell you, and you can't see what's in front of your face." Isonomia instincts kicked in and he sighed a little inward sigh. "If it's really urgent, uhh. I can try and give you a hand, if you want. But please stay inside after that? At least for a few trials, until... whatever's going on sorts itself out and they move back out afield?"

Re: Down By the River (Nir'wei)

The man spoke about them being well fed, and for a brief moment, Auya was confused. And then the wolves appeared, and she still startled a bit. She was not an animals person, nor a huntress. It was dark, but the moon gave just enough life to let her see their menacing forms. She saw one sit at the man's whistling command, but it brought no comfort. He could just as easily sic them on her.

Then the man continued to speak. Then he began to stammer like a nervous child. All fear of the man dissipated in Auya. He must be young. To speak like a teenager asking a girl for a walk? With her hair color, he was probably more scared of her than she of him. She heard his explanation and it was reasonable enough. He'd seen her Corona, his name was Nir'wei, and he was the nosy type of person. All she really needed to know. Probably a good guy overall.

"Well met Nir'wei, I'm Red, this is Laramy."

She smiled softly, not realizing that he might not be able to see it.

"I haven't seen any glowing animals, and we've been out here for several trials now without much incident." She hiked a thumb over her shoulder at the tent that was deeply obscured in the darkness. "Camping while we build up our homes here. We'll stay inside when we have an inside in which to stay."

She realized that may have come off a bit rude, and he seemed as if he was truly concerned and wished to help. So, she was willing to let him. "Well, we won't say no to some tips and tricks at keeping the beasts away, if you're willing and able. Otherwise, we'll keep felling and carving these trees until we have a safer homestead."

Laramy grunted, also recognizing this man as not a threat. She knew he was going to get back to work. He wasn't one for small talk with strangers. "Just me and you then."

She turned from Nir'wei, bending out her arm from her side so he could slide his own in there, like a proper, short gentleman. "Shall we?" She was prepared to walk with him wherever he wished, so long as it was while he was teaching or helping.

No small amount of relief washed through him when it seemed like he hadn't offended either of them. "Well met indeed," he chuckled softly, shortly before his ease caused the big cat to roll her shoulders and stand once more, padding over to sniff at the gathered lumber with a curious cant of the head. The wolves scattered shortly afterwards, all three of them. One probably to investigate the camp, the others just to sniff around and about for whatever they pleased. Strange how dogs were easily just as curious as cats, just in a different way, and yet it earned nowhere near as much acknowledgement.

"Oh I don't doubt you haven't seen any yet, but that's because if you see them, you're dead. These things are... extremely dangerous, let's put it that way." Honestly he'd yet to figure out the battle plan for if he actually crossed one. Three wolves and a Zephyrus sounded like plenty in theory, but things had a bad way of turning sour faster than you'd expect when you weren't sitting on the floor fantasizing about it, like he had. "In any other situation I'd honestly be telling you just to get out of here for a few days, take your tents with you and wait it out until the pack is cleared out one way or another. It's not worth the risk. It just isn't. But... I get it, it's hard to find a spot with good access to water and all that." Plus, much more likely, they didn't want to believe him and they just thought he was overstating the threat level because he wasn't experienced enough to handle it, or something like that. He'd heard the shtick before. Better to just assume it was already in their heads if it wasn't on their lips and work backwards from there.

Regardless, he locked arms with hers when she offered, though it looked utterly ridiculous thanks to the sheer height difference. "You sure you want my help? Because uhh, it ain't exactly pretty, the suggestions I'd make." Nature wasn't really a pretty place after all. It didn't care about your social expectations of one-another, the proper protocol and etiquette. Perhaps he shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, since she was living in a tent in the middle of nowhere, just like him - surely she knew some of this stuff already, he was just giving out lip service at this point, but still. He headed towards where he could feel Greyhide snooping about, that campsite she'd thumbed at earlier. "First thing you're gonna want to do is piss on some of the trees nearby. Scent-marking your territory is, uhh. Surprisingly effective when warding off unwanted intruders. Stops them from wandering in when they don't intend to, which is actually a bigger threat than those that do intend to."

"Second, if I were you... I'd eat in a very different place from where you sleep. If they come for you, they're hungry... and if they smell cooked food near you, they're gonna imagine that you'll make a great meal too. Cook somewhere else, get rid of the bones somewhere else, wash it all down with whatever spare water you have, remove the scents." Gods, it felt so easy to talk like this. In something he was comfortable with. Something that made sense. "I'm guessing you already sleep with a weapon near you when you sleep, but... look, that's not really going to help against these things, they've torn people to shreds in full armour before. Your best chance is to go undetected. Or, well. Give the appearance of something that really isn't worth fighting. Use torches, or that glowstone thing from earlier." That's what it probably was, anyway. Faith or Padraig had one, he was sure of it, strange stones that gave off unnatural light. Perfect for situations like these, when he couldn't see more than five steps ahead.

This was a fairly simple thread, given that it was abandoned and didn't really get past the meeting stage of things. The premise was solid, though, and I liked the added complication of the red hair and Nir'wei's sensitivity (yet also caution) toward Aukari because of it. Nir'wei seemed like he was going to be helpful regardless though, given that he provided advice about how to stay safe while camping out in the dark of the wilderness.

I especially liked this line: "Strange how dogs were easily just as curious as cats, just in a different way, and yet it earned nowhere near as much acknowledgement."
