Re: The Trial of Balthazar Black

Rand Broson watched, and he listened. Then, as was appropriate to Scalvoris Law, he countered. After all, it was his job to persuade the Judge - in this case the Alberach - that his case against Balthazar was sound. At the moment it was his genuine opinion that Balthazar was helping him do that, so props for that. "I will respond," he said softly. "One place at a time." And so, he did. As he did, he named the document numbersplease assume he does this, each document is recorded and coded, for ease of use for Kura's identification.

"In regard to Viden, Madam Alberach," he said. We have signed witness statements from members of the military and from Professor Thetys. They are at the front of the Viden dossier. Balthazar Black told them he was on "Special Assignment". He was not. He told them he didn't have any means of proving this special assignment because of how he travelled. He had no means of proving it because it was not true." Rand spoke clearly, his voice calm now. "Furthermore, if Balthazar was simply dreaming that he was on a 'Special Assignment', he utterly failed to carry it out. From the moment that he arrived to the moment that he left, he did not approach or ask for any help or supplies on Faldrass. The closest he came was in his meeting with Professor Thetys. The professor recalls no mention of Faldrass or the ongoing crisis, but he was under the impression that Balthazar was there to 'arm' the Elements, by learning alchemy himself. Professor Thetys notes that Balthazar did this despite his low opinion of the Elements and so Professor Thetys was indeed happy to help him. The first time."

Rand named the evidence, then moved on. "It is worth noting, also, that while Balthazar's statement just now that it was Professor Thetys who advised him to go to the Garrison is true, like so much of what he just said, it is not the whole truth. To state the facts, he met with Professor Thetys on the 41st Ymiden, when he told Professor Thetys about the Empty and the Professor urged him to go to the authorities. So concerned with the public safety of Viden was he that he then used magic in a public bar on the 46th in what we assume to be an attack by the ghost in question. He met with Professor Thetys again on the 48th and 49th Ymiden. It was not until the 51st that he approached the garrison. As far as we can tell, after burning the building, he left." He paused then, before speaking again. "Balthazar claimed to be 'helping' or 'arming' the Elements to Professor Thetys. Yet, we have alchemists and, indeed, Professor Thetys has helped in the relief effort himself, when Doctor Augustin asked him to. He is a well-known and well-respected man. He is also a powerful ally. Balthazar's suggestion to him that we are not functioning well, or whatever the negative viewpoint he gave was not in any way appropriate. Either he was badmouthing the people he believed he was working for, or he was badmouthing the people he was pretending to work for. That is, however, a small point. The potential impact on our relationship with Viden is not. Further," he said, "since Balthazar did not report the Empty when he met it, nor after he had told Professor Thetys about it who did, indeed, urge him to go to the garrison. Since he, in fact, left the crowded bar where it attacked, his concern for the people of Viden seems to have appeared only when he realised that he needed them."

Turning to look at Balthazar, he said. "So yes. When you say, 'It was Doran who advised me to go to the Central Garrison to report the ghost and I did.', you are correct. You are simply missing the fact that it took you ten trials and that in the meantime you chose to try and fight the ghost yourself and thought it appropriate to go to public places where you drank and endangered people. A simple, but important omission." His gaze remained on Balthazar as he continued. "Professor Thetys also hopes that the practical alchemy lessons he gave you for the improving of the Elements uniforms in Ymiden 720, some five seasons ago, has been helpful to us. Ten trials of knowing that there is a dangerous entity and putting the people of Viden in danger knowingly and wilfully sits alongside every death of an Element in the past five seasons which could - perhaps - have been saved." Glancing up at Kura he said softly. "No such report was received, no such information passed on. Whatever practical alchemy Professor Thetys gave Balthazar in order to improve the possibility of survival of our troops - which Professor Thetys did because he believed that Balthazar was there on our behest and he was representing us - whatever it was, Balthazar has retained possession of it and not shared it."

That said, he moved on. "As for Quacia," he said. "Again, while Balthazar is not lying. There is a very different truth when it is all laid bare." He waited until Kura gave him the nod to move on, and would answer any questions from her at that time. Then, he continued. "There are some similarities to Viden, in fact. However. Having arrived in Quacia on the 57th, his bond was posted for him by Woe, as Balthazar says. What Balthazar fails to mention is why. Woe had hired Balthazar as a mercenary to help fight the Creep. He was given a sword by Woe for his work. This may not sound like much of a payment, but it was a Faldrunium Katana, masterwork, made by the best swordsmith in Quacia. Of course, the handle and scabbard had to have alchemical enhancements so that it could be held. Quite a handsome payment for the mercenary job." Rand looked at Balthazar. "Perhaps a reason you stayed which you simply forgot to mention? That, while you were working for the Elements for the protection of Scalvoris, you were taking mercenary jobs in Quacia. The tournament in question was a phrase used by only one witness, who claimed she saw two people fighting outside."

Rand spoke softly, calmly, continuing to give the information. "Woe is now living in Scalvoris. He had originally tried to contact Balthazar here, to hire him as a mercenary. Apparently, Woe did not realise that Balthazar had decided to take an Arc off and not tell anyone. However, After Woe had bailed Balthazar out of jail, he let him stay with him. Then later on they went to an underground duelling ring run by an ex-patriot Yari. They fought for a round or so, and were, as Woe puts it, "crashed by the Theocratum". He doesn't know what Balthazar did, but Woe suspects that he fought his way out." He looked at Balthazar, but didn't question. That was Kura's job to do, after all.

"After this point, Balthazar mostly kept to himself, apart from their sparring sessions. Until the last night when they had a drink, and then were called to the front to fight the Creep. They were sitting in a bar when the Dragoons ran in, seeking 'Trooper Black' and Woe. Reports from other patrons of the bar report Balthazar as being very drunk, mere moment prior. Or, considering later events, perhaps it was not alcohol which caused his stumbling confusion. I am not equipped to judge." He watched Balthazar keenly and continued. "They went to the fight. Woe describes that Balthazar had some issues with the Theocratum that they were tasked to protect. They had committed a blood sacrifice, which horrified Balthazar. Woe offered to hold the front against the Creep, while Balthazar guided the civilians to safety, but Balthazar insisted on standing and fighting, because Woe got on better with the civilians and Theocratum. So, Balthazar disapproved of the blood sacrifice - rightly - but he did nothing to stop it and instead of using his magic to protect the citizenry, he insisted that Woe did that while he fought the Creep. So, Woe went into the Undercroft, to find a way to safety, while Balthazar fought against the Creep with a troop of soldiers." He nodded. "This lines up with the response we received from Quacia, and our intelligence gathering there. They acknowledge that he was instrumental in holding the chapel, although it was badly damaged. He started the fight with 17 troops. The survivors say that they were allowed - and encouraged - to take a substance called "Wildfire" by Balthazar, which they took. There was a mutiny against him during the fight when they realised that Balthazar could, in fact, be getting people out of there, but the leader of that mutiny is one of the dead. It is accepted that Balthazar was pivotal to helping fight back the Creep, but the drug-taking and mutiny are also clear. Of course, this was during his Special Assignment to bring aid to Faldrass. None came, none was asked for." And now, he turned and faced Balthazar. "I'm told by Mr Morendi that he had a lovely home where he lived in relative luxury and that the two of you were enjoying a drink together. The description of the sword you were given as payment is exquisite too."

Again, he turned Balthazar's words on him. "So while you could indeed argue you 'didn't have a choice, you could have run. That you could have pushed through any wall into the Untold and gone somewhere else but you stayed because people needed help. ' you could also point out that you were hired as a mercenary and paid handsomely for it. You could also argue that your Rupturing could have saved many citizens lives, but you insisted on fighting, despite suggestions that you would be more useful not doing so. You could argue that while you were drinking in Quacia and sparring, just like while you were learning alchemy in Viden, the Elements of Scalvoris were fighting to rebuild, stopping crimes, and dealing with all the things which it is their job - and your job - to deal with. That is a counter argument, I would suggest, which holds more weight. Because you could return to Scalvoris at any time. You did not."

As for Melrath, Rand looked at Balthazar. "I have given all the information I have on Melrath. All that is clear is that Balthazar spent all of Saun there, got initiated into another magic as he says, and was involved in some way in the issues in Noatun. Whatever one member of the military has said, the official stand from Melrath is clear. They wish us to stop sending "rogue mages", as I said." He shook his head. "So, all that is clear is that you were there for an entire season, did nothing for Faldrass or Scalvoris during that time and, in fact, simply gained in your own individual power." He spoke to Kura then, turning away from Balthazar. "I do not know, Madam Alberach, if he told the person who initiated him that he wanted that magic 'for the good of Scalvoris' or to 'arm the Elements', but I assure you, like the work of Professor Thetys a few seasons before - we have seen nothing of it."

Melrath was quick. Rharne was next. "It is true, and let the record show clearly that Balthazar sent back the food. It was enough to feed a few families. Frankly, if it was part of his special assignment, then he would have been able to provide more by growing the vegetables himself. Or selling the sword which he'd been paid for his mercenary work with - that would have fed twenty times the people. As a point, Professor Thetys also donated much more from his personal monies, in terms of giving money. At this point, Balthazar had been absent from his job since early Ymiden 720, had been on a self-proclaimed 'Special Assignment' to Viden, Quacia, and Melrath to get aid for Scalvoris and Faldrass and the first actual aid he sent of any kind was the food he didn't need from a brawling tournament in Rharne." He spoke calmly, but there was no doubting it. "While, people like Darius Baer and Yeva of Rharne travelled between Rharne and Scalvoris in order to benefit both, while they arranged accommodation and gave up their own home in the case of Yeva, Balthazar - the Rupturer, the man who can pop around the whole of Idalos, did not. His home was not given to the refugees, he gave no personal donation. Instead, he went around Idalos making money and fighting." He then named another piece of evidence.

"As for Rharne and the inordinately long time that Balthazar was there, fighting and drinking and sending some unwanted food back. I have included, because I feel it pertinent, the report from Commander Vivian Shiryu. The Siege at Storm's Edge was very dire indeed and there have been large numbers of casualties. Some of our own citizens, Yeva of Rharne and Darius Baer included went there to help. It is in the report. However, it is important to note the following. Balthazar, on his Special Assignment, arrived in Rharne on the 20th Vhalar. After some brawling and drinking in the name of Scalvoris, he joined one Praetorum on a patrol in the Storm Wastes on the 51st Vhalar. There, they met a, " Rand glanced down at the dossier and gave the slightest of shrugs. "group of Pumpernickels, which are flame-monsters. Balthazar and Praetorum fought those creatures, and killed them. So, on the 51st Vhalar, and before, on the 38th when he was again asked to help and again did, then he was very aware of the trouble that Rharne was in. It was at this point that, had he asked or even informed, we would undoubtedly have given permission for him to go and help."

He looked at the Alberach then. "And so, Praetorum and Vivian requested his help to open a portal - which he gave. It is worth to note that, other than two situations where he was specifically asked, the people of Storm's Edge who do know him, do so only as the person who trains Elisabeth Angelus. Who provides customised, personal training to her," he looked at Elisabeth at that point and it had to be said, Rand looked about as impressed with her as he was with Balthazar. "A lady who was there as a researcher at the behest of Faith Augustin, and who was protected the whole time on the one mission she went on. Personalised training for his girlfriend, but other than a single chance encounter and the unwitting arrival at a battle following the opening of a portal at the request of a friend, he did not in fact help. In the one place we would have been happy for him to be and helping out."

It seemed that Rand was quite clear about the worth of Balthazar's words. "So, Balthazar, when you say that in Rharne you "saved lives and it felt like the work Vri wanted you to do, so you did it," you don't mean by fighting at Storm's Edge? You didn't think that it would be appropriate to approach their military and offer your services - it had been more than the ten trials you took to approach the military in Viden, after all. You did not offer training to their troops, only your lover. You did not work for the betterment of Scalvoris or Rharne, only yourself." He named another piece of evidence. "That is the casualty list at Storm's Edge during the time that Balthazar was there on his self-created Special Assignment," he said and he raised an eyebrow. "I do not know, Madam Alberach, but it seems to me unlikely that his new magic from Melrath, the alchemy knowledge from Viden or the sword from Quacia was used to better anyone except Balthazar Black and that the people in Storm's Edge were, like the people in Scalvoris, fighting without him."

Finally, with a soft sigh, Rand spoke again. "And so, we come to the Sparrow. To Balthazar's grand return to Scalvoris where, despite being assigned to Faldrass, despite having a job to do he sends out feelers for information and gets information and acts on that information without once speaking to anyone. While he is not telling us whatever it was that Professor Thetys sent, while he is not reporting on what he has done while he has been A.W.O.L, while he is not communicating about all that - he is also not communicating about intelligence received and simply acting on it." He shook his head. "And he is bringing his lover with him. Perhaps our three arc undercover mission was a new training exercise for her. It fits the bill." Rand said. "There are people he should be working with, things he should be doing but he does not."

With that, Rand gestured that he was done and Jacien lifted his head. "The bird?" He shrugged slightly. "That would be telling now, wouldn't it." He looked at both Balthazar and Elisabeth then he turned to Kura. "My assessment is that he has not spoken to anyone else regarding what he believes he has found. He has no more idea who the Sparrow is than he has concern for military protocol. Furthermore," Jacien's tone was calm and friendly. Almost fond. "He is gullible and rash. I have transcribed the conversation between us, Madam Alberach, word for word. He over rates his importance and is not afraid to throw his military rank around, as is evidenced. I suspect that he has gained power quickly and he finds himself completely unaware of what to do with it. He is easily manipulated and quick to run his mouth. It seems," he said, "that either he believes he is saving the world, or he is portraying himself as such to win the affections of the young woman who appears to have completely bought what he is selling." He flickered a gaze to Elisabeth then, "and I am concerned for anyone who, when faced with overwhelming evidence of action and inaction, of dereliction of duty and reckless behaviour, will ignore it. I found her to be charming, but meek and rather obedient to him although of course my meeting was short. It is worth noting that he used different names for her between outside and inside the building. If he was facing a genuine underground, if I was who he thought I was, or who many of the people there are, in the best case scenario they'd have slit her throat and made him watch, I have no doubt. " Of Elisabeth's ideas about the beggar, or Balth's discussion with her about it, Jacien said nothing. "I do not believe my position in the Bazaar is tenable any longer and we will need to pursue the Sparrow with what we have."

Jacien then looked at Rand "Do you have any further questions for me, Militant?" Rand shook his head. Jacien turned to Balthazar. "What about yourself, Trooper Black? Or are you content to simply maintain that I am short sighted since you are ... what was the phrase? Ah yes. 'a Flame Trooper with considerable resources who is employed to ensure the law is followed. All laws.' that was what you said to me, was it not? Just before 'You and I may stand apart on this issue, but there is plenty we could achieve together with cooperation. Everyone needs a friend sooner or later, even the Master of the Bazaar. Think about it. You don't want to be my enemy.' and all while you thought me willing or able to sell slaves. Tut tut, Trooper Black."

And he waited to see if there were any questions.

The Contents of the Dossiers:
Viden:
this thread (modded thread with Tempest) and this thread (with Doran).
Aspect of the thread which they're basing it on:
Balth wrote:"My name is Balthazar Black. I'm an Element from Scalvoris on a..." He paused as he thought about the specific term he'd thrown the Militant's way to get permission. "Special assignment." He decided "A few trials ago I became aware of an Empty in your city that is using lesser ghosts to possess citizens and force them into service. I have discovered it is anchored to the tavern it is keeping the people in but I need resources to liberate the people and safely demolish the anchor." Well... he didn't sound entirely nuts.
Balth wrote:"The assignment was to find people and supplies to help with the clean up and rebuilding efforts in Scalvoris following Faldrass's eruption. I'm a dreamwalker and my travel method was a little less than conventional. They couldn't send a letter because we didn't know where I'd end up but I'm sure you've heard of the disaster."
Balth wrote: Doran had asked a question first and so Balthazar thought that it was only fair he answer that question... first. It would help to explain his visit a great deal. "The Empty has not been destroyed but I can't approach it subtly anymore. I'll be speaking with the garrison commander in a couple of trials to get the permission I need." The only significant thing Balthazar wore was the necklace Doran had lent him which he took off and set on the professor's desk. "Or I'll be called mad and arrested. Either way I wouldn't want anything to happen to prevent me from returning this. It worked, very well in fact, but I don't want to risk losing it."
Issues:
1. He was not on a Special Assignment, he wasn't on any assignment at all. That was why he didn't have a letter.
2. He did not look for, or secure (that we can find) any people or supplies while in Viden. He didn't contact the authorities, in fact, until he had tried to deal with the Empty on his own and could not. He contact the authorities the day before he left. He did not ask them - or anyone we have been able to find - for any help. He was focused on the destruction of the Empty
3. Re: Explosives: The Elements have these. If Trooper Black had, at any point, discussed that with colleagues, he would know.
4. The Elements do not have the information given by Doran to Balthazar.
Evidence Gained:
Full co-operation, letters from the two garrisons he was assigned, etc. Letters, witness statements, etc.
Confirmation from Professor Thetys (who he contacted) that he did not ask for help for Faldrass - but wanted training to make explosives, and help dealing with the Empty. Prof. Thetys does not recall Balthazar mentioning Faldrass at all. He believed that Balthazar was working in the name of the Elements - even though Balthazar has a low opinion of them, as he told Prof. Thetys.

Quacia:
Threads: here and here (fighting the Creep)
here for the sparring that has been misreported as a tournament
the duelling ring
The "Tournament" that was reported was actually a sparring match outside Woe's house (have checked with the PC that it's not unlikely it would have been seen) here - it's a single witness who used the word.
He arrived / was arrested on the 57th. Fought the Creep on the 66th.
Woe posted his bail. Woe had been trying to contact Balthazar on Scalvoris to hire him as a mercenary but couldn't find him.
Issues:
1. He was not on a Special Assignment, he wasn't on any assignment at all.
2. He did not look for, or secure (that we can find) any people or supplies while in Quacia. He went to fighting rings and bars and was hired for mercenary work.
Evidence Gained:
Co-operation from the Quacian government in terms of dates / numbers / events.
Confirmation and elaboration from Woe.

Melrath:
No real change from above.

Re: The Trial of Balthazar Black

Image
It was a good thing that Balthazar did not make a move to attack Jacien when the undercover Element walked into the room. Kura was not stupid and while there had often been no Elements with the room with Balthazar or Elisa, the pair of them had never really been alone, just in case someone tried to break in and kill either of them or in case they had elected to make an ill-advised escape attempt. Indeed, their watchers were still in the room with them. Elisabeth, as the more helpless of the two, had gotten Phelan as her watcher. The great back wolf sat in front of the two of them now in spirit form, watching them. Balthazar, as the more capable of defending himself if someone tried to break in and kill him, had gotten Cally as his watcher. The ghost wasn't exactly a skilled fighter compared to most, but she was unkillable, decent with a knife, and as a Wisp, could be invisible. She was invisible for the trial, standing behind Balthazar. Neither of them moved, spoke, or even breathed, so there was no telltale of their presence without the ability to detect the supernatural and the dead.

Kura, however, mentioned neither the wolf nor the ghost and instead nodded at Elisabeth when she said she'd be honored to speak on Balthazar's behalf. She did, however, frown when the very next thing she said, and the only thing she said for that entire part of the accusation and defense phase of the trial, was a comment on the investigation. Then, she turned her attention to Balthazar as he began to speak in his own defense. Balthazar responded, of course, but at least he hadn't brought it up. She listened quietly to his defense and explanation of his actions, as was her role. When he was done, and Rand said he would like to respond, she held up a hand. "One moment. There are some matters to clear up first." she said, before face Elisabeth, her expression grave. "Miss Angelus, I worry you are not takin' the situation seriously. Trooper Black is on trial and because of the sensitive nature of much of the information regardin' Jacien, we cannot bring in additional witnesses for either the defense or the prosecution. If you have information that could sway the outcome of this trial in his favor and neglect to share it because you're too busy focusin' on the slave ring investigation, those consequences will be yours to live with, especially if this trial goes particularly poorly for Trooper Black. I would weigh your words and actions in here carefully, miss Angelus. You are not likely to get a second chance." she said, her tone stern before she turned to face Balthazar.

"As for how you can be facin' charges for these events, Trooper Black, while you are a part of the Elements, you represent this island as a whole, especially while abroad and even more so in allied cities such as Viden or Rharne. As such, you are held to the same standards of behavior while abroad that you would be here. If we received reports you had done any of what I listed here in Scalvoris, you would be speakin' to a military tribunal regardless and expected to have answers." she said, her tone firm. "As for you point about joinin' the elements, one of the most dangerous murderers in Idalosian history spent 60 arcs as a member of the Imperial Legions with no indication of how villainous she was besides bein' an aggressive gadfly. She is not an isolated case, either. Military organizations, by their nature, unfortunately provide a ready cover for those who are more interested in their own gain than they are in helpin' others." she said, her tone calm.

Then, with that said, she gestured for Rand to continue. He had a pretty thorough response to Balthazar's defense of his actions. Doran Thetys was not an entirely unknown figure to the Albarech. Kura didn't recall that they had ever directly met, but he was an ally of Faith Augustin and had assisted durin' the War with Ellasin. So his reputation was decently established. As his report continued, Kura's expression did not change. She looked much as she had before, her anger clear in her eyes, but her expression controlled. When he was done, she picked up the Rharnian file. "In addition to what was stated by Rand, Yeva of Rharne, who was at Faldrass with us as well, gave her life in the defense of Rharne, though she was later revived by an Immortal during a ball. Furthermore, Woe also appears in the report of the final battle. The report lists him as a competent fighter, though his appearance in that battle was apparently quite sudden and surprisin' to the Rharnians. Their report expresses some confusion as to his identity and why their lake spirit chose him to aid in the fight. Yeva is another life someone with your abilities may well have been able to save, and Woe's combat ability is established, so factor in that we are aware Woe is a skilled combat in your response, Trooper Black." she said, her tone calm.

Then Jacien spoke and Kura listened quietly to what he said as well. As she spoke, she opened the file that Jacien had given her on the Sparrow. This caused her only change in expression during Rand and Jacien's presentation. Her face darkened and her eyes, for a moment, glowed with the reflection of a light that wasn't there. Then she firm shut the file and closed her eyes for a second, before opening them again, at which point they were back to normal. When he was done, she looked at Balthazar and Elisabeth. "If Jacien's investigations into Sparrow are pointin' in the right direction, he is understatin' the danger miss Angelus was in. Suffice to say, he is one of the most dangerous people in Scalvoris, possibly the biggest traditional threat left to the island now that we've dealt with the Loggin' Consortium." she said, before shaking her head.

"Trooper Black, you of course have the chance to present a rebuttal to the Militant's point. Miss Angelus, you will have the chance to defend his character." she said, her tone deceptively calm, as if she had been pushed past even her previous anger. "However, I should warn you that this is not currently goin' in your favor, Trooper Black. You willfully chose to omit important details from your testimony, and so I must wonder what else you are keepin' from us. Remember that the final judgement of this trial is mine alone to make, and if you think I lack either the will or the means to see that judgement enforced, you are much mistaken." she said, her voice firm.

Re: The Trial of Balthazar Black

Still Sometime...but with Balthazar...

She felt his hand squeeze hers in return. That little action was all she needed. He was there with her and whatever was going to happen, they would face it together.

As time went on, she continued to watch the expressions of everyone in the room. There was a lot going on under the surface, as least as far as she could tell. Her touch seemed to be having the desired impact on the mage…at least until Jacien walked into the room.

Elisabeth had never seen Balthazar angry prior to that trial. He had never once slipped into that state in her presence. He had started angry and while she didn’t blame him in the least – she was angry too – he was having a harder time reining it in. His work, his life, was being put on trial.

Whatever measure of help she thought she was providing Balthazar was immediately lost the moment Jacien arrived. Elisabeth didn’t have to look at the mage to know that. There was nothing she could do that would soften his feelings in wake of being in Jacien’s presence. She knew that the moment her hand was released.

He was angry, she understood that. She had lost trials with the man she loved because of the situation. But no matter how angry she was, Elisabeth had to put that aside. Had to. She had one goal – a life with him. Her life, however, wasn’t the one being dissected. That was fortunate for her because it allowed her a measure of detachment from what was going on so she could focus on what she needed to.

Him.

Her hand was released, yes. Elisabeth was stubborn. She frankly didn’t care what anyone else in the room thought about her soothing antics. He needed to feel her there. Her hand, gently but firmly, slipped over his. If he wanted to grasp his own hands, fine…but her touch was not going anywhere.

Who was she kidding? She needed the touch just as much as he did. So many trials lost…

Listening to him talk, she focused on the sound of his voice. It was laced with anger, but she hadn’t heard it for …well…however long they had been held. She had missed it so much. But in listening to his words, a few things became apparent. Balthazar was who he was.

“I learned that love means not seeking to change someone...”

The conversation with Vri. She had told the Immortal that she would never seek to change him, and that was true. Being together, they made each other better versions of themselves. Elisabeth tempered him and he brought her to life. Balthazar had been going through a period of transition himself prior to the arrest, one organically born of the natural events of his life. Vri was probably a huge part of that but she also recognized her own contribution.

Balthazar wasn’t the same man that they spoke of in the files. All she had to do is look at who she was when she arrived in Rharne and the differences within herself to know how quickly someone could evolve, and she had seen that first hand with him.

She wasn’t seeking to change him…but he was changing on his own. His experiences were changing him. Time was changing him. Arguably, love was changing him. But how to make the others see that? She had to make them understand…and him, but she didn’t know how.

Kura spoke to her and Elisabeth simply nodded, replied. “I’m sorry for my comments, Albarech. I do promise I’m taking this seriously.” There was nothing in the young woman’s tone to suggest otherwise. She had simply allowed her curiosity to get away from her at the wrong time.

And then Rand and Jacien took their shots…and something in her mind clicked. Letting her gaze pass back and forth between the two, she listened to what they said about her and her relationship with Balthazar. Apparently, despite the Albarech’s assurances that she wasn’t in trouble, didn’t keep a few of the best Scalvoris had to offer from taking personal shots at her. Is that what Scalvoris was all about? Before this, she had been planning to make Scalvoris her home…with Balthazar. To work for the betterment of Scalvoris in any way she could. Saoire and Scalvoris had made an impression on her. She understood the need for the questioning and how serious the matter was, but parts of the mens’ reports felt unnecessary.

The conversation raging in the room was serious with serious consequences. She needed to do something quickly, so she took her chance. Her final chance.

Gently sliding her hand to Balthazar’s arm, she squeezed it firmly, getting his attention. His anger was deep, and he needed prompting of another deep feeling that could possibly ease it, to allow him to think clearly. Her hand slipped down to the finger his ring would have occupied, rubbing it gently.

Damn it, Balthazar…stop fighting for one minute and remember…and listen.

Balthazar was Yari. When she met him, he was so used to being on his own, fighting his way through everything. Stubborn and unyielding in most matters. He had friends scattered here and there…but the way he operated was mostly alone. Their time together changed that. The initiation, the rings, asking her to stay with him. He needed to be reminded that it was no longer just him – it was them.

Elisabeth then took her hands away from Balthazar. She needed her own strength now.

Focusing on the Albarech, she took a deep breath. She was done with Rand and Jacien. They apparently thought little of her and she couldn’t change that. She had no idea what Kura thought of her, but it really wasn’t any of Elisabeth’s business.

“I’m not going to speak to all the incidents brought up here because, in truth, I don’t feel they really matter in the context of what I’m going to say.”

Collecting her thoughts quickly, she glanced down to where her ring would be, had it not been taken. Rings gifted to Balthazar by the Baron for bravery, and then one of which Balthazar had gifted to her. They wore them on the same hand, the same finger. Elisabeth wanted to give in to the anger within her. It would have been so easy to let it run rampant...but no. That wasn’t what she was. That wasn’t what they were…and it wasn’t what their rings represented, at least to her. She wasn’t going to taint that with anger.

Drawing on her discipline and with a steady voice, she began.

“While I was in the holding room, I prayed to Vri. I told him that I didn’t care what happened to me…but to help Balthazar because I feel that Balthazar is worth it. There are so many people in Idalos that sit and do absolutely nothing to help others throughout their entire lives. They waste them. They just go on in life and pretend nothing bad is happening. Just like the people in Almund that ignore the beggars and homeless. Walk right past them like they do not matter. Balthazar has the strength to try and help people when others will not.” Her thoughts flickered to the beggars in Almund, hoping that what she had done had provided some measure of help.

"When I met Balthazar in Rharne, he wasn't the man that sits here now. I've watched him change and grow over the past cycle. We've spoken at length about pieces of his past and I feel that he's learned a great deal about himself and I've seen him apply that knowledge. He's less impulsive. He thinks more about his impact. He is more mindful.

“I’m not blind. Everyone…everyone has faults. He told me once that everywhere he goes, people need help. I think, from my own perspective, the problem is that he’s trying to help too many people. Trying to do too many things. I've never seen him unwilling to help another, even if there was no benefit to him personally.“

Recalling some of Kura’s words, she continued. “It was said earlier that there are those that believe he has worth – Faldrass and Saoire amongst others. Vri must believe he has worth as well to be marked. He has skills that still could be of benefit to a great many in Scalvoris if given another chance.”

She hadn’t enjoyed having to listen while two men gave their uninformed opinions of her and her relationship with the mage. It was beyond unprofessional and crass, in her estimation, but she wasn’t going to rise to the bait and retort. If Jacien wanted to base his opinion on the very brief interaction they had, that was his problem. Rand, she wouldn’t even let her mind go there. His case against her was summed up to bad taste in men and reasoning her loyalty to Balthazar as being gullible. She didn’t see any of it that way, but the trial wasn’t about her. It was about Balthazar.

“I wasted most of my life with books, ignoring the world. A lot of people do. He doesn’t. That’s the whole point. He's used his life to help people. He was on Faldrass. He’s Fire-Forged. His commitment to the service of others runs deep, no matter where he is. If it hadn't been for him, I would have continued to ignore the world, but he encouraged me to be a better version of myself. He believes in others and the power they have inside themselves to do good in the world. He's the reason I'm out in the world, trying to help and make a difference.”

“He never intended for me to be involved and tried to protect me. My unintentional involvement in this matter was a mistake. I apologize for that and for making matters worse, although I had no knowledge of what was going on. I am grateful to you and Scalvoris for keeping me out of harm's way. I’m indebted to you for that and am willing to repay that debt in any way I can.”

She ended her thoughts by looking Kura again, speaking softly.

“The sum whole of a person can’t be quantified on a piece of paper. It can’t be put into any report. It’s not data to be collected. It's simply a piece of the puzzle. I trust Faldrass, Vri, and Saorie over whatever is in those reports and I trust what I know to be true. He’s a good man and he has a good heart. I ask he be allowed to prove that and for compassion in judgment. Please.”

I just want a life with him. To build something...

Words unsaid but deeply felt.

She was fighting for the right to a life with him. That’s all she wanted.

Re: The Trial of Balthazar Black

Cylus / Ashan 721
It wasn't going well for him? Even blind, Balthazar would have been able to see that. It was bad from the start. A bag over his head, dead silence from the troops arresting him, thirty trials in his own personal cell where only one person came and went to bring him that which was needed to survive. The trouble was that while he might have been able to recognize (and he had just been directly told) that things were not going his way, Balthazar was nearly beyond a point of reasonable thought. He'd been taken and held for the longest they could, and given no time or honest sense of what his charges were until he'd been put in the room and the trial began. From his point of view, the proceedings had been anything but just- yet they had been in accordance with the law. One didn't realize issues with that until the laws were turned against them. He hadn't even realized he was already on trial until the attack was delivered and when he did realize he was on trial, he'd already said things he couldn't change... of all the times in the world, the Untold had to break now? A fleeting thought that the mage pushed away as Kura spoke. Balthazar knew he wouldn't run. He didn't run. That was his problem.

Kura explained why he was on trial and referenced the fact that if she'd gotten reports that he was doing the same things in Scalvoris he'd have been put before a military tribunal. Really? He already drank when he was off duty around Scalvoris, which was most of the reports from Rharne. If he'd fought back the Creep from Scalvoris, risked life and limb to keep the Flameborn off their shores, killed their creator, and- wait no, one of those was already murder. He would of had to explain that. Fair enough. He didn't like it, but fair. So after Kura explained why he was on trial, Balthazar gave a small nod and sat back in his chair to think.

Rand said a lot of words. Jacien said a lot of words. However at some point it seemed like Balthazar had already made up his mind about what he was going to do. His eyes narrowed and he squeezed his hands to try and control the impulse he felt strongest. Rand's assessment of Quacia was where it seemed that Balthazar had checked out of Rand's report. Rand wasn't there. He didn't fight the Creep. He didn't know what it was like to make those decision. He was not a Rupturer and he did not know how the magic worked. Balthazar was a better fighter than a Rupturer. He had always been more useful using the elements than portals. They took more time and focus. He was good at it now, better than good, but at the time his real skill had been in Defiance so that was what he relied on most. He was saved by a different Rupturer while he tried to buy the high, infected survivors time to run. Yet it seemed Quacia had been more than willing to omit the mention of their own Rupturing mage who could have done far more with the magic than Balthazar. He'd been betrayed by someone with as little knowledge of the magic as it seemed the report had. There were other things that bothered him about Rand laying out the way that events had transpired but it only furthered the decision Balthazar had made.

The incredibly terrible thing about it all was that Balthazar did feel responsible for all the lives lost because he didn't do something. That was why he'd stayed the places he had. Their reports took trials from his time abroad and treated it as if every moment of his down time was the only thing he did while he was there. It was the only thing he'd been seen doing, so it was all they cared about. Being seen... lesson learned. He couldn't immediately think of a good reason why he hadn't come to the Elements with the little alchemical knowledge he'd gained in Ymiden all those seasons ago. The reason he had wasn't a good one. He just wasn't ready to go to them about it. Doran showed him how to make a cloth a little more durable, something Balthazar could now do by touch so it didn't seem remarkable. Balthazar wanted to give the Elements something that was remarkable when he told them about it. Armor that resisted all the elements, swords that splintered through armor, hundreds of grand ideas it seemed he would never turn over to them now because the professor thought it was too dangerous to Balthazar's own health.

Balthazar almost... scoffed when Rand said that Doran had donated more from his personal wealth than Balthazar had contributed to the land in his time away. Had they seen the professor's office? It didn't seem that his donations had hurt his coffers. Rand wanted money? Was that it? No, Balthazar knew that wasn't what it was but Rand's assessment of his contribution in Rharne certainly made it seem like he just wanted Balthazar to throw money at them. He'd have probably been much farther along at growing food to donate if he hadn't been held for the maximum time so that they could let him stew and maintain a guise Jacien soon would indicate was ruined. He'd probably be further along at perfecting the alchemy he wanted to offer them. Further along at- what did Kura just say?

Even without magic there was a fire that burned behind Balthazar's eyes when Kura blamed him for Yeva's death. She told him to remember that they knew Woe was a competent fighter, but Balthazar didn't see the relevance of it. Woe was good with a whip but he excelled in causing pain- at least that had been what Balthazar experienced. Pain didn't do anything to the Creep. Fire and stone did. It didn't really matter though because all he was thinking about was that first part- 'Yeva is another life someone with your abilities may well have been able to save.' That wasn't fair. He was in Quacia, miles and miles from Rharne where the Hero of Faldrass was failed by everyone with her. He wasn't there, but he felt just as responsible. He'd brought her back from Rharne to Scalvoris after her resurrection. He'd tried to help her and he'd recommended Doran with her. He had tried to fix what death had done to her, but he couldn't. Just like he couldn't fix that he felt responsible.

He blinked a few times, finding unexpected moisture clouding his vision for a moment and his gaze settled on the table. He took a deep breath and looked to see where his black nails bit into the skin on his hands and had drawn blood. He didn't realize it while he was squeezing his hands but he'd pierced the skin on the back of his left hand with the nails of his right hand. He only the felt the pain when Elisabeth moved for his hand and he realized what he'd done. Oops. He covered his hand as soon as he realized it. Elisabeth's hand had moved to his arm before moving back down to where his ring had once been- well the ring linked to her ring. He knew what she was trying to do, he recognized it because it was what she always did. She was trying to help. She knew he was angry, she saw right through him, and she was trying to keep him from doing something stupid.

Trying.

Jacien, before leaving, threw his own sentence back at him and Balthazar stared at the man. "I say a lot of words to people I am trying to get to do things, Jacien, but for you only two," He paused, "chew sand." Then he turned his head slightly to Elisabeth, "Local version of fuck off." Which he also said pointed towards Jacien before disregarding the master of bazaar. He wouldn't forget him but as much as Balthazar didn't like it, if Jacien was backed by Rand there was nothing he could do. Nothing a logical man would do. Nothing an Element could do. His message to Kura and Rand was very nearly the same, chew sand. As poor of a decision as it would have been, it wasn't entirely unjustified in his opinion. If people weren't grateful for his help, he'd let them all rot next time. If Rand wanted to poke at every time Balthazar had gone into a bar during his time away, let him. If Kura thought he was irresponsible, let her. Let the fire do what it would.

Elisabeth spoke first, giving her testament to his character while Balthazar thought over his defense for the the Militant's point. But what was that point exactly? Balthazar hadn't spent enough money on the people? Balthazar hadn't given written permission for them to use his home for refugees? What had Rand or Kura done? A home obviously sat empty in Scalvoris Town and neither of them- no... no that wasn't how a trial worked. He was on trial. He was being examined. Only his actions were the ones under judgement. So what was Rand's point? Why was it him there? Why couldn't Markus have come to represent the Flame Troopers for the case? Why Rand? If Markus wasn't dirty, then he should have had as much knowledge as Rand did and yet Rand took the time to be there in person so he clearly had to have some reason. He wasn't happy Balthazar left but it had to be more than that.

Balthazar found himself distracted from his thinking by Elisabeth and her testament. He gave her a sad smile, the sort of smile someone gave a friend who didn't give up when they knew the fight was already lost. She was sweet. She said kind things about him and it made everything a little easier to manage but he had just had roughly his last arc torn apart by two people he knew relatively little about. She wanted them to give him another chance but he was passed that. He was fairly certain Kura was too... and Rand. She wanted to build a life here and the settlement would have been that opportunity, but building a life was what had pushed Balthazar and Isabella apart. He was afraid it would do the same to them. He was afraid people like Jacien would push them apart. He was afraid... but he had her for the time being. The precious trills left before they'd be pulled apart again. She was trying to help him using her arguably best weapon, words, but there was only so much that could be done.

What struck him, and amused him a little, was that they'd both prayed to Vri to protect the other. 'Prayed.' Elisabeth was always more formal when trying to invoke immortals whereas Balthazar just... talked. 'Hey, Vri,' 'We're in the shit now, aren't we Vri?' That sort of thing. He wondered what she had said to the Immortal of Death though he knew that was not the domain she was probably focusing on. He wanted to express that he felt what she did but not with Rand and Kura in the room.

"Thank you," he said quietly to Elisabeth, "and it'll be alright." Balthazar turned to address Kura. "I disagree with Elisabeth about the events not mattering in light of her defense of me. I think the events that happened matter a lot. I think they prove a point. " Balthazar said, turning his head to look at Rand, "Would you have provided me with all the materials I needed to create uniforms for all your troopers if I came to you and said I knew a little alchemy? Doran gave me knowledge and an example and enough insight to keep looking into it. Would you have given me a workspace to mass produce this equipment? Woe did. Yes, I admit, Woe paid me well for my help but being given a nice sword to fight with was far preferable to being imprisoned or wanted in a city of blood cultists. When they-" Balthazar's voice caught and he seemed to rethink his sentence. "When I had to choose between fighting the enemy with soldiers to save the civilians or going with the man I'd just watched murder a woman for nothing at all, I chose to stay and fight. If I'd gone with them I might have done something far worse than not making a portal that was beyond my capabilities. You weren't there, you don't know how quickly it happened so you don't know what it was like. You're reading the aftermath like I wanted it to go that way. You're treating everything like I had an elaborate plan to ruin our reputation." Balthazar stopped himself again and looked towards Elisabeth for a trill before looking back at Rand, "I could show you, I could let you experience what Quacia was like if it would make you feel better about my judgement. I could let you experience any memory in my mind that you wanted, I am not trying to hide anything, just to explain what I was trying to do, but I don't really think it matters. I don't think there is a thing I could say to you or show you that would convince you my trip was worthwhile."

"But I suppose that is my point- or one of them, you weren't there- in Viden, Quacia, Melrath, or Rharne. Neither of you were there and neither of you had to make the decisions I had to make. It's easy to look at a piece of paper with what information you could find and judge me. It's easy to take the stories you've heard about a magic and to assume I have the same capabilities but it doesn't make it true. Rupturing is complicated. Holding open a portal to a place I can't see while plants and towering trees are storming in to kill me would have gotten us all killed. As for Yeva," he paused again, "if I could change one thing about everything I did, I would be there to die so she didn't have to. She didn't deserve what happened to her but I am the one who brought her back to Scalvoris and I have done everything I can, amidst other duties, to help her since." He pointed out before moving on. That was all he wanted to say about Yeva. He knew his level of composure would not last long discussing her death and his totally invalid feelings of responsibility about it. Kura had hit on one sorrow that really did sting. The rest he could forget. The rest he could say was her duty... but he knew she'd read the files. She was the judge after all. She had to have known he was in Quacia when Yeva died... and he was at the ball when she'd be resurrected.

"Jacien was right about me, in some ways. I'm hardly... twenty five arcs old? Twenty six soon? What trial is it- never mind- the point is I'm not all that old and I've mastered three different magics. So yes, I gained a lot of power quickly but I suffered for it. Rash? Yeah, guilty. Curiosity has always been my problem. You've seen that first hand, Kura. Remember the volcano? You told me 'no more magic' and I just thought I could push a little bit more. I thought I could find another stone or some clue. I was trying to help then, now, always. I wish I was this greedy, self-serving, power obsessed monster they are trying to make me seem like, I would have done very well if I'd set my mind to that instead of helping but I would never have come back to Scalvoris. I'd have stayed in Rharne, with her." Balthazar gestured to Elisabeth. "But I came back. I was here for a while doing my job, paying respect to Vri, and no one said a thing till I got in the way. The only thing- the only two things- I have done wrong are neglect my duty as an Element, something you could have brought up and done when you reassigned me last season, and step over your three year investigation in the course of one afternoon of poking around, which wouldn't have happened if we'd had this conversation about duty last season." Now he was getting to what he had decided.

"I can't defend what I did because I don't think it was wrong- leaving, that is. I understand interfering with the investigation was, but I can only offer to help fix it, like I have helped before. If not as an Element, you are more than within your rights to take the job from me, but then a detective, mage, and marked of Vri. You have information I don't and I have abilities I assume you don't. Call it throwing around my weight or power or whatever you want, I'm offering to help. Rand, you said it yourself, 'when Trooper Black is working and is doing so within the bounds of the military structure, he is a good investigator and he has had some good results.' With you two telling me what to do, how could I possibly mess it up more? " Balthazar said, "But regardless, having had only this conversation to prepare it, that is my defense. I helped people. I felt good about it. Vri agreed enough to give me powers I did not have before. I would do all of it again, except I'd save Yeva and I'd go to-" Balthazar paused because he realized he still wouldn't have gone to Markus. He gestured towards Kura, still deciding her more trustworthy than Rand. He knew there was corruption in the Elements, just not where. "-you about Sparrow... for what little good it would have done."

But, because everyone else had said something about the elusive figure, Balthazar thoughts lingered on him as well and he threw out, "You're within your rights to do whatever you want, but if you're going to have someone take off my head because I went- what did you call it? globetrotting, at least let me look at the case and give input before the axe swings or you send me back into dark hole with a bag on my head. I don't see how it would make anything worse." Then, after a moment he remembered something else he wanted to know if he was about to be greatly delayed, "And, if I'm going to disappear on them forever, I'd like to know how the settlement is. I assume you questioned the people and the guards, did they seem... healthy?"

Re: The Trial of Balthazar Black

Image
Kura listened quietly to Balthazar and Elisa's response to Rand's charges. Elisa, when focused, could assemble a decent speech in defense of Balthazar's character. There was a slightly frown when Elisa brought up Vri, Kura was still not happy with the Immortal of Death for trying to curse Faith and her friends, but that wasn't exactly relevant to Elisa's testimony, so she kept silent. The rest was, at least, heartfelt and, in Kura's opinion, honest.

Then it was Balthazar's turn, and it didn't get off to a strong start. Telling Jacien to chew sand was, frankly, extremely foolish, but she would attend to that in time. His own defense of his actions was...peculiar. It was, largely, based on the idea that either Rand or Kura had no practical battlefield experience and didn't know how it felt to have to make decisions on the fly. That they'd spent their whole lives on the back row handling paperwork. It was not the direction Kura would have gone, since an argument predicated on "you don't understand what I went through" was doomed to sound juvenile no matter whether it was justified or not, since it was the favored argument of actual juveniles.

When he was done, Rand and Jacien indicated they had nothing more to say. Kura nodded at them, then opened a drawer in her desk and pulled out a small stack of files, setting the top one aside. "Trooper Black, your argument is predicated on the idea that either Rand or myself have no idea what it's like to be on the front lines, that we can't possibly understand what you've gone through. In the future, I would refrain from usin' that as the basis for a legal defense, as it's also the common argument for an adolescent who's havin' a row with their parents. In this case, you're wrong on both counts. This island's government isn't old enough for anyone to have gotten their positions without havin' earned them, especially in the military. As for me, I've been on the front lines of every major crisis this island has had since I arrived here, and several minor ones. This, of course, does not cover my career prior to arrivin' here, but suffice to say, you're not the only one who has experience dealin' with murderous flora." she said, her tone calm.

"In addition, you seem to believe that flauntin' your duty is a minor issue. It is not, I take the matter rather seriously. All this," she said, gesturing at the stack Rand entered the room with. "came about because I asked Rand to find out what on earth you were doin' lookin' for slavers in Almund when you had responsibilities of your own." she said, her tone still calm. Her eyes had also started to fade back to their usual icy blue. "However, you and Rand both have a point. Your prior track record tells a much different story than the one presented over the past year." she said, gesturing at the stack she pulled out of her desk. "That is everythin' you were involved in here on Scalvoris prior to leavin', barrin' one thing, and in them you're efficient and effective." she said, before gesturing at the two piles.

"Which leads me to wonder what happened to make these two stacks present such a different impression. Fortunately, Miss Angelus' testimony to your character, your own testimony, and several other things may present an answer to that." she said, before sighing. "Domain Magic is not a passive thing. It wants to be used, constantly pushin' at the mage to unleash it. If the mage and the Spark have differin' goals, the Spark can take over the mage if it grows powerful enough and the mage's control of it is not strong enough. The most famous case of this bein' one Ellasin Dathlande. It is essential that the mage master their magic, or else the magic will master the mage." she said, before leaning forward and twisting her left arm as if turning a door knob. At the motion, two rupturing portals roared to life on either side of the desk, remaining a moment before she repeated the motion and closing the portals. "And before you make a fool of yourself, I'm a Rupturer myself, I know how the magic works." she said, her tone firm.

"Then, of course, there's this incident." she said, picking up the file she had set aside. "The collapse of Faldrass. An incident that had a profound impact on most everyone there, for better or worse." she said, putting it back down. "I do recall you there, yes. At the time I thought you were young, eager, and more than a little foolish." she said, her tone blunt. "As your actions in here have shown, and by your own admittance, you are brash, but it is not brashness alone that you have shown here. Throughout this trial, you've been cocky, hostile, and shown a shockin' disregard for how your actions affect even yourself. At the start of this trial, I admit I thought you self-absorbed." she said, before shaking her head. "That isn't it, really. Arrogant, yes. But not self-absorbed. No, what you are is somethin' else entirely." she said.

"You claim to have mastered three magics, and maybe in terms of pure skill, you have. But you are not the master of your powers, your powers are the master of you. From what I see, from what you say, from how you act, you're not far away from falling the same way that Ellasin did. Furthermore, your recklessness has only gotten worse since Faldrass. You act and act and act, but are loathe to accept help and always you seem to feel the need to throw yourself at the front lines, barrin' when you've got somethin' to distract you. Frankly, you act as though you've internalized a severe psychological trauma and haven't had it treated." she said, her tone blunt.

Then, finally, she shook her head. "This trial is over, and my decision is made. Flame Trooper Balthazar Black. For the charge of neglectin' your duties, guilty. For the charge of endangerin' innocents in Viden, guilty. For the charge of deliberately usin' the Elements and Scalvoris to empower yourself, innocent. For the charge of reckless use of your powers, guilty." she said, her tone firm. "Your sentence is as follows. Your Paradigm Cuffs will be replaced with the ones worn by Miss Angelus until such a time as you have proven you are at least in control of yourself. In addition, you will be assigned a professional psychologist from the Order of Adunih. They will conduct a full psychological examination and will come up with a treatment or therapy plan based on those results, that you will follow. You will be suspended with pay for the remainder of this cycle, and assigned a member of the Flame Troopers who will moniter you to make sure you are abidin' by the sentence. During the term of your suspension, you are not allowed to conduct Element duties without express permission from either myself or the Militant. Finally, you will focus your attentions on your settlement on Faldrass. Your performance on this matter will be observed. If you are found either unwillin' or incapable of carrying out the duties needed to make that settlement flourish, I will find someone else for Saoire to put in charge of it." she said, her tone firm.

Then she stood up from her desk. "Three final points. First, Balthazar, if you ever tell a superior officer of the Elements to eat sand again, I will personally see to it that you clean every domicile in your settlement. I don't care if that means scrubbin' floors or washin' tents. I don't care how unappreciated you feel, tellin' Spirit Deputy Raque to eat sand when you're the one who fouled up his investigation, accidentally or not, is supremely childish. Second, as to your offer to help, all evidence points to Sparrow bein' the Warden of Slags Deep. As I've already declared war on Slags Deep, that investigation is largely closed for the time bein'. Third, you settlement is doin' fine so far. We made sure they were fed and sent them some buildin' materials we had ready so they can try and get some construction done. I would advise you remember that the Scalvoris government can help provide supplies so you aren't havin' to pay for everythin' out of yoru own personal pockets." she said, her voice calm, though there was something to her voice that made it sound as if she was talking to a teenager.

"Tonight, Balthazar's cuffs will be switched and you'll both be moved to more comfortable cells. I do apologize for the extra day of discomfort, miss Angelus, but I can't arrange a proper room or transport on such short notice. Tomorrow mornin', there will be proper transport back to Faldrass for both of you, though miss Angelus can decline it if she wishes." she said, stacking up the files into a single stack that she then picked up under her arm. "Court is adjourned."

Re: The Trial of Balthazar Black

Still Sometime...but with Balthazar...

She had said what she needed to. Her truth. The truth that she had seen in Balthazar. Nothing she said had been a lie. That was all she could do and pray it was enough. She had no idea if anyone was listening to her but she had tried.

Time had been stolen from them and part of her still didn’t understand why, but pieces were falling slowly into place. Truthfully, most of what was occurring in the room she was blind to. As observant as she was, Elisabeth wasn’t paying attention to a lot of things she should have. Her only concern was for Balthazar.

She had endured the time in holding, just as he had. No one had talked to her and she hadn’t known if Balthazar was dead or alive. There had been tears and anger at the situation and frankly, she didn’t feel like she had handled confinement all that well…but she had gotten through it thinking about how much she loved Balthazar, and the elation at seeing him had been overwhelming.

When she was done speaking, Elisabeth glanced in his direction…and noticed something.

He hadn’t heard what she said.

Yes, she was speaking to everyone in the room, but the words had been for him. To remind him that she had been there for him the whole time. To remind him that she loved him and would always fight for him and them.

But he hadn’t heard her. Not really.

He had thanked her and told her it would be alright…but she wasn’t sure if he believed that or not and sadness filled her. It was like he had already given up. Why would he give up? Wasn't what they had enough to fight for? In a very real sense, she had thrown herself in front of three people - for him - and the words hadn't reached him. What more could she have done?

Elisabeth listened as he spoke. She wasn’t surprised he disagreed with her, but the issue had been that she really didn’t know about any of the incidents they had brought up – except Rharne – so speaking about them wasn’t something the young woman could do. He could…and did.

He mentioned Rharne and how he could have stayed there with her. Elisabeth wished they had. Maybe the entire situation could have been avoided had they just stayed but that had never been in the cards. He wanted to go back to Scalvoris and so they had. She had been excited to accompany him and see where he lived and what his life had been like before her.

The confinement had strengthened her in some ways and broken her in others…but wasn’t that the way of life? One listened. One learned. One adjusted and got on with it.

The Albarech then spoke and passed judgment. He would be cut off from magic – for now. And she wanted his mental health investigated…. but they were headed to Faldrass! They could be there together and work for something bigger than themselves to help people. It was better than prison. Certainly, better than what he had verbalized at the end of his defense.

They were going to a place that maybe they could build a home and do all the things they had talked about. She was going to the place that had made such an impression on her. The place they had received their rings. It was special to her.

Elisabeth was upset. There was no way to get past that. She’d be angry for a while. It was hard to not be upset when she knew he was hurting. She would always protect those she cared about. There was no concern for herself – just him. There was no way of knowing how the situation would affect her in the long run but, at the moment, she was just happy that she would have him back and that there would be no further separation.

Wrapped within that, however, was a deep appreciation to the Albarech – Kura – for understanding that there might be more going on than meets the eye. Truthfully, Elisabeth didn’t know. She hadn’t known Balthazar before Rharne. She personally had never seen anything other than the Balthazar she knew and loved - the one she had testified to. It was simply the idea that regardless of what had happened, people were concerned about his well-being. That was a hard thing for her to dismiss...and she was grateful.

Nodding to Kura, the young woman spoke softly. “Thank you, Albarech. I will be going with him to Faldrass.”

She had a debt to repay and a life, with him, to get on with.

Elisabeth

Overview

I'm always intrigued by how she's summed up by how you describe her. She listens, she watches. There's a lot of this inside Elisabeth's head which is intriguing. Her devotion to Balthazar is incredible, she shows real loyalty here. After being locked up for 30 days, I'm not sure that I could be so calm, I know that! I hope you enjoy your rewards and thank you so much for being such a good sport about this - your PC was very much just caught up in the whirlwind!

Balthazar

Overview

I very much enjoyed reading your parts of this - you play the hot-headed, reckless Balth very well. It was a lot of tension, the way the arguments went and I was fascinated by how well you documented his change of mind from "they're all corrupt" to, as I believe we have agreed is appropriate for this whole Cycle - "oooops". The reflective / thoughtful /angry/sulky/blaming others stuff was really well played and it was beautifully juxtapositioned against the realisation that he loves Elisabeth - yet, she's aware that he's not hearing her. Truly, great work, great writing! Enjoy your rewards

Loot

Consequences as stated by Kura. You have the paradigm cuffs on, which supress all magic etc. There will be 3 members of the Elements - all Flame Troops - who take shifts in being with you. They will remain in close enough proximity that they are always able to see you. If you are far enough away that you might reasonably be out of earshot, they will close the gap. Please be aware that all public behaviours will be reported to Kura and Rand. Re: the psychological evaluation - please follow that through in a series of solos and drop me a PM when done. You may create a new City NPC for that, or use one already existing (as long as it's appropriate, of course).

Kura

Overview

You know when she has the gold eyes that things are bad! You played Kura as barely contained furious here, but equally, she didn't give in to that fury and she came up with a judgement which was clear and - I believe - fair. I'm intrigued to see where this goes next!
