The Perse Wing

The Perse and Sapphire Wings are the designated wings for primary and secondary education within Viden. These two wings are located in a semi-detached building (each occupying half) a couple of minutes walk from the main academy.
Primary education is compulsory for all living in the city, including and slaves brought in as adults and their offspring born in the city. Every child born of the city, and every slave working here, will be taught how to read, write and count. Thus, it is assumed that they are able to think for themselves, and be a functioning and valuable member of society. Slaves are entitled to receive this education at any age, depending on when they are brought to the city, and there is no time limit on how long it will take them to reach this level. Child slaves of appropriate age may attend the full education hours of a freeborn child, however an adult slave may only attend in the morning hours, returning to work for their masters in the afternoons. It is Videnese law that slaves be educated to this level.
For children born in Viden, education starts as young as six years old, though this number is entirely dependent on the perceived abilities of the child when they reach this birthday. It varies from child to child, but on average children are expected to have to spend about four years in primary education. Elevation between educational levels is based entirely on academic achievement, rather than age.
Education at this basic level consists predominantly of literacy and numeracy. By the time they leave, all pupils will be able to read and write the common script (which is the official language of Viden). These skills are transferrable, and families may choose to accompany their child’s learning with a second, and even a third, language at home. Children will also be capable of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division by the time they progress to the next level of education.
