[Viden] Fauna

Flora in Viden
Image
The fauna listed in this thread is local to Viden and/or Northern Idalos. Though most of the area around Viden is arctic wasteland, many animals are known to live and thrive here. Please feel free to reference it and use it in your threads. If you would like to suggest a new plant to add to our list, please do so in the dedicated Viden Development Thread.

A broader list of flora and fauna - which can be found throughout Idalos - is in the Knowledge Base, which you are also free to use in your threads.

[Viden] Fauna

Kioo Tulki
Image
Price: Since they're quite rare and bring good luck, the Kioo Tulki runs for about 300 GN, or 600 GN if trained.

Habitat: The Kioo Tulki can only live in extremely cold weather, like that in Viden. Many weaker ones even die during hot months like Saun, because they need the cold to keep their internal temperature down. They're immune to the cold, so many make their dens just by burrowing into the snow.

Diet: The Kioo Tulki survives mostly on ice, snow, water- and berries! They don't need much actual sustenance, so they can survive on anything they find, and berries are a special treat for them if they find them, and can keep them going for a good long while. Feed one some berries and they'll love you forever.

Lifespan and Development: A Kioo Tulki lives about the same average lifespan as a cat- anywhere from 16 to 23 arcs. The mother will be pregnant for about two seasons, and can only have up to two kits in one litter. However, Kioo Tulki can be pregnant as early as 1 arc old, so they have plenty of pregnancies in a lifetime. They're small things at first, and are born without their antlers- which develop after they're 1 arc old, in the earliest Cylus after that point. They can fly almost from birth though, and are proficient flyers within three seasons.

Frequency: The Kioo Tulki is actually a bit of a rare find. It tends to blend into the snowy mountains around Viden, and is adept at hiding itself if it thinks a predator is near. However, when you do find one, it's considered very lucky. Some are taken as pets, due to their docile nature. They're more likely to be found in captivity than in the wild, in fact.

Temperament: Totally harmless. The Kioo Tulki is a shy, sweet creature that has very little offensive qualities. Their only defense is to hide, run, and be clever. They make very nice pets as a result.

Appearance: The Kioo Tulki is often called the Ice Fox, due to its fox-like and icy appearance. A small thing, it is the size of a fox, with soft blue fur. Small paws, a small head, and a long, very fluffed out tail make up its body. The Kioo Tulki has large, pointed ears, and has two antlers growing out of its forehead. These antlers are made of pure ice. They're beautiful, like crystals, and tend to break off once an arc, usually before Vhalar, and grow back to full size by Cylus. The Kioo Tulki also has a small ice crystal growth around the base of its tail that looks like a gem, and a few small ice formations on its head, by the base of its antlers. It also has very pretty, graceful blue wings on its back. The Kioo Tulki can fly with ease, and often will be found flying around its owner's head (if it's domesticated).

Abilities & Weaknesses:: The Kioo Tulki is considered lucky because, more often than not, following one will lead you to good things. Whether it leads you to shelter from a snow storm, or to hidden treasure, if a Kioo Tulki finds you to be trustworthy, it'll lead you to good things. People who own them as pets hope to use that luck to their advantage. Kioo Tulki have also been known to be great finders. If you've lost something, merely ask your pet Kioo Tulki, and nine times out of ten they will bring it to you. They're extremely intelligent creatures, and while they are shy and timid, they make very loyal companions. Their weaknesses would simply be how small and docile they are, and how they can't stand heat.

[Viden] Fauna

Dire Boar
Image
The great pig, the Dire Boar, is an uncommon animal that can be found throughout the north eastern areas of Idalos. Wild, intelligent, and fiercely powerful, the Dire Boar is a beast which is best avoided by any inexperienced mortal.

Description: Colourings of this magnificent beast range from black, through brown and sandy shades, through to white. Curved tusks (which are found on both males and females) range in size depending on the size of the boar in question, though maximum size is 2 feet.
Weight: maximum 2 tons.
Height: 4-7 feet.
Length: 6-12 feet.

Habitat: Much like their smaller counterpart, Dire Boars can be found both solitary and in small groups. While the common wild boar can be found throughout Idalos, the Dire Boar is only naturally found in the Northern Region, and parts of the Eastern Region. The Dire Boar population is highest in the arctic tundra North of Avaern.

Lifespan and Development: Dire Boar are a very long lived species and continue to grow throughout their lifetime, which lasts somewhere in the region of 150-220 years. When a Dire Boar mates, they mate for life, even through mating partners do not spend the entirety of an arc together. The loss of a mating partner will see a boar, no matter how young, alone for the rest of their life. Entering sexual maturity at 30 years, a foetus gestates for just under 2 arcs, and will stay with the mother for the first 10 years of life. A mating pair will typically have 15 offspring throughout their lifespan, if both partners survive.

Diet: Much like humans, pig species are quite capable of eating nearly anything. The Dire Boars, being no exception to this general rule, will consume nearly any source of food it stumbles upon. And thanks to its powerful sense of smell, the Dire Boars can identify food sources from nearly a mile away. Wounded and freshly slain animals will often draw nearby Dire Boars, as will ripe fruit and cooked vegetables.

Temperament: Dire Boars are only as fierce as they are hungry or frightened. In Northern Idalos, or in harsh landscape, pray that you never encounter a Dire Boar. Even a small pack of the dangerous creatures is capable of overwhelming trained Rangers alike should the beasts be starved or terrified.

Abilities & Weaknesses: The boar is large, muscly and strong, with long tusks that could skewer flesh and most harder objects. Its jaw, too, is unusually powerful. However for all its power, the Dire Boar is mere flesh, protected by hair: any blade or arrow will pierce its skin.

Videnese Snow Setter
Image
Price: Pup - 15gn, Untrained - 30gn, Trained (Dogs trained for specific jobs; Hunting, Tracking, Guarding etc.) - 50gn

Habitat: Videnese Snow Setter (Snowies) are perfectly breed for even the coldest of Viden weather, and can work comfortably in the region year round. However, they are not capable of withstanding blizzard and storms, or particularly hot weather.

Lifespan and Development: The lifespan of the Videnese Snow Setter ranges from 12-15 arcs, tending to live longer than average dogs due to their hardiness and active lifestyle.

They develop along a similar timeline to most dogs, reaching physical maturity at approximately one arc, and reproductive maturity at an arc and a half. As pups their fur is fuzzy and much darker in colour, lightning as they grow. The Videnese Snow Setter sports a double coat that protects them from Viden's harsher elements; an undercoat that is short, soft and dense, and a topcoat that has thick, water repellent guard hairs. Coat colour ranges from pale honey to a deep auburn, but is always in the golden-red colour range. Due to their short undercoat and longer topcoat they appear to "glow" when in sunlight, prompting the nickname "Faldrun's Hound".

The Videnese Snow Setter has a coiled tail and perked ears, standing at 1'3-1'8 from the shoulder and weighing 20-35 pounds.

Diet: Due to it's energetic temperament and generally active lifestyle, the Videnese Snow Setter requires more frequent meals than the average lap dog. Their food should be high in protein and nutrients.

Temperament: Psychologically these dogs tend to reach maturity at approximately two to three arcs, and are friendly, happy animals that work very well with their masters. The make fantastic companion animals, but can be trained to hunt and track game. They are highly intelligent, but grow bored easily, so can be more difficult to train. They do not make ideal guard dogs, as they will not protect property, though they are very protective of family members that they have bonded with. They are high energy and are very active, with a high tendency to bark and howl.

[Viden] Fauna

Aurora Glider
Image
Price: It actually is illegal to buy or sell Aurora Gliders because they don't take well to captivity and can be dangerous. However, if you conquer one, and mount it, it will accept you as its owner. Even so, there are fools who sell young Aurora Gliders on the black market, going for around 650 GN a pop.

Habitat: No one really knows where an Aurora Glider makes their nest- as one has never been found. However, their habitat tends to be very high in elevation and very cold. Very few Aurora Gliders have ever been seen outside of the mountains around Viden.

Diet: The Aurora Glider survives on fish. These large creatures tend to dive into the waters around Viden and Scalvoris. They can hold their breaths for long amounts of time and they'll dive down, catch as much as they can hold, and then shoot up into the sky again. Aurora Gliders can also survive on land prey if they struggle to find fish.

Lifespan and Development: The Aurora Glider is actually fairly common. Despite only laying one egg every five arcs, and only being able to lay five eggs in one lifetime, this bird is a survivor. It can be found along the coasts of Viden and Scalvoris, and even in the mountain ranges of both of those regions. A few rare ones may even be found in the mountains of Northern Gauthrel. The Aurora Glider mates for life, and they live for around sixty arcs if they die naturally, though many die before then. An Aurora Glider is considered a child for the first five arcs of its life.

Toxicity/Hazard: The Aurora Glider can be fairly dangerous when threatened. It's a large bird, and its talons are extremely sharp. It can pick up whole cattle and other large animals in those talons. Its wings also have a powerful gust affect, easily causing snow and wind to flurry, and can knock a grown man down with just one flap. The Aurora Glider is a predatory creature, and it tends to enjoy snatching up people to take home to their nests for food.

Appearance: This beautiful bird is huge, easily the size of a large tower, and much bigger than any humanoid species. It's got a large blue feathered tail, and even larger wings that start out blue but are white on the ends. It has strong legs with large talons and a bulky torso, also with blue feathers. The Aurora Glider tends to have a mane of blue feathers on its head that resembles a mo hawk, and looks like blue flames rather than feathers. It has a short, sharp blue beak, and deep set, small eyes.

Other Information: The Aurora Glider got its name due to its habit of gliding through Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis in the sky. The colorful night light formations are often seen with an Aurora Glider. This graceful bird loves to soar through them, as well as through snow storms and very windy skies. Its powerful, large wingspan makes it adept at this.[/align]

Re: [Viden] Fauna

Tanner Mantis

Image
Developed by Nzi’Fuma
Habitat: Viden snowfields
Lifespan and Development: The life cycle of a Tanner Mantis begins in the egg stage. When an adult consumes it’s prey, it gathers the viscera left over after its feeding, and reproduces hermaphroditically. Afterward, it will lay a cluster of eggs beneath the surface of the snow, nested in the leftover viscera of its former prey.

The eggs tend to lay dorman beneath the snow either until the snow thaws enough for the eggs to be exposed (Which kills them) or until an animal’s body warmth activates the latent eggs, immediately hatching and inserting itself into the subcutaneous layer of the creature’s skin.

From there, it proceeds to feed on the blood sugar of the creature it inhabits, until it absorbs the bloodline memory of its host. Once it has attained a certain level of ‘familiarity’ with it’s host’s bloodline, it will take that memory with it to the next stage, pupae.

The pupae stage can go one of a few ways. Either it will exit the host through one of it’s orifices without much damage done, or it will tear out of the skin violently causing wounds that are difficult to heal, because the toxic slime it leaves behind complicates healing, encouraging the growth of disease.

In any case, the host creature is rendered with a less capable immune reaction for at least a season before they are able to recover, if they survive.

The Tanner Mantis then seeks out the snowfields, and from there lies in wait beneath the snows, insulated from the freezing winds by a surrounding layer of snow and whatever hide or skin it was able to tear off its former host.

It has deadly pincers and scythe-like appendages that are capable of ripping and tearing, more than capable of taking down local herds or stray wanderers. With every kill, it collects parts and pieces, covering itself with the hide of it’s kills and laying eggs as it will.
Diet: carnivorous in pupae stage. Parasitic in larval.
Temperament: Hostile trapper.
Abilities: The properties of the larval slime of the Tanner Mantis are said to have certain benefits, when it comes to speeding up the rotting process of materials, whether it be for mulching materials, or the processing of flax, and other processes.

It can also be used as a toxin when insinuated into a wound. Injested, it’s mostly harmless.

Lietajúci Pardus
Image
Developed by Wald Lowca
Price: It is Illegal to hunt theses beasts.
Habitat: Devanti Mountains, Champion's Pass, Murk Pass
Lifespan and Development: The Lietajúci Pardus resembles a leopard in appearance, but don't let that fool you. This beast has a wingspans of 9 meters from tip to tip. They are know to ambush pray from above, and going for their neck. Some rare sightings are disclosed in the mythical texts, where they speech telepathically to men. These myths have not been proven true though. Because of their coat and beautiful horns, these animals are hunted for trophies, due to this their numbers have dwindle to endangered. Despite this people still hunt the animals closer to extinction. They are around 10 meters long and a weight of 200-230kgs. Despite this size humans are not on their prey item list. Except during hard times, or when under threat. Attempts to domesticate these animals are ill advised. Stories of circuses being destroyed from stealing cubs are no myth. Rangers are sent out in squads of no less then 10 when needing to take on one of these beasts. Luckily attacks are rare just like their sightings.
Diet: Carnivorous
Temperament: Cautious
Abilities: Flight bombing: Diving and breaking the neck of its prey.

Re: [Viden] Fauna

Terralagoisrex
Image
Developed by Wald Lowca
Price: Pending Approvial
Habitat: The open areas in Videnese wilderness
Lifespan and Development:
This terrifying beast of the cold reaches of Viden, may look like a mammalian predator. But in truth they are of the species of Non-avian Dinosaurs. The warm blooded reptilian relatives hunt the flat lands near forests and rivers. With a size of of 5 m and 1400kg. This animal is known for it's large bite and destructive claws. When digging a burrow they use the claws as shovels. The have amazing eyesight even in blizzards. Egg laying season for the mothers happens twice a year, once in Ashen the second in Vhalar, during this time the high pitched clicking of mating calls can be heard. The creatures take 20 trials to hatch, in which they start having a rapid growth. Being independent from their mother after only 30 trials of life. Though not fully grown, it will take a full arc to get to full size. Even though the youth is small, they tend to be just as aggressive, using faster attacks then the adults, as they are a bit more frail then the adult. A full den for a Terralagoisrex is dug into mountains and hill sides, piles of rubble and a hole in the earth being the only signs of it. They only tolerate each other's company during mating season, and only very rarely would they hunt together, within their 20 arc lifespan.

In a encounter, it is best that you try and run. IF this is not possible in your situation, you should avoid their sharp teeth and diamond like claws. One wrong move could turn you into ribbons. They do not have a ranged method of striking, though sightings of trained creatures are thought to be able to throw boulders.

The Terralagoisrex were used by the people of Black Peak to form a tunnel through the mountains, making it the easiest way through the mountains. Though, keeping control of any of them requires almost legendary ability.

Diet: Carnivorous
Temperament: Very Aggressive attacks on sight in most cases.
Abilities: Moving earth in a fast manner. A loud roar that induces fear into animals and man alike. (Treat it as an Intimidation expert without knowledge bonuses)
