In the Mortalborn’s opinion the people around him were overreacting. Of course one should not ignore pieces of metal that were falling out of the sky, but all that pushing and shoving was more than just counter-productive. It would likely lead to a few people simply being trampled whereas they could have gotten away unscathed had they examined the situation at hand rationally. Mortals, he thought somewhat condescendingly, seemed to lose all sense of reason when faced with what they perceived as a danger. He would not try to save them from their own stupidity though – he was neither a fool nor some sort of Good Samaritan. Instead he would use the chaotic situation to conclude his business and quickly return to his laboratory with his prize.
As the guard told him to toss the onyx nel in the coffer, he did so immediately. Judging by the fact that most of the guards’ attention was currently elsewhere – they seemed to be trying to get the crowd under control – he could likely have kept the money and walked away with the mutant, but he was not a thief, and he did not engage in criminal activities any more than he absolutely had to in order to reach his goals. Risking the support of the people of Etzos over the puny sum of five hundred nels was not worth it.
Once he had paid, he walked over to the mutant and then tried to swiftly lead her away from the site of the battle. In the beginning he had watched the fight between the two Avriel with some interest, but lingering any longer now that he had what he had come for and the situation was getting out of control would be unwise. His time would be better spent studying the mutant and trying to find out what was the matter with her unborn child.
