[Eastern Gauthrel] Minimal danger

Frid and Kayleigh fight a monster

26th of Saun 717

The Gauthrel Plains reach from the coasts of western Idalos to the very edge of Ne'haer before meeting the forests surrounding Hiladrith. The Fields of Gauthrel can be a dangerous place, one that is home to the most deadliest of creatures. It holds many secrets in the history of the land and may offer rewards to those who choose to journey out into the wild plains. It is best not to wander out alone in these fields. Even caravans have been known to go missing.

26th Saun 717

Fridgar walked along, only with a twist. He was due to meet Kayleigh after having a Jeger emblem tattooed to his new form. Finally, he'd done it with the aid of his beloved. He stood thirty seven feet tall, excluding his gargantuan horns. He really was a lurker like no other, roughly a quarter larger then the others in every metric with a long black mane of hair and solid red eyes. He'd had to sow, with Alistair's help, nine complete Stekir pelts together in order to craft the loincloth he wore, but at least he looked somewhat decent. Across his chest was the tattoo of the Jeger emblem, heralding himself an ally to the horde.

As for Kayleigh... she was still new to everything Gauthrian. She might not recognise that he wasn't a mindless monster, so, he'd set up a trap. The edge of the forest in eastern Gauthrel was their rendezvous point, she would be arriving soon. Fridgar stood behind one of the massive trees to his side, completely straight and solid, unmoving. By the way she wrote, Fridgar assumed that she hadn't seen a lurker before, this would hopefully earn a scream. The unsettling features of the lurker curled into a grin of sadistic glee.

Would she forgive him for this? Probably not. Was it worth it? Only time would tell. All he knew was that this was both terrific and cruel. Why were they even meeting at the east? Fridgar had a bargain to strike with the roksgard and needed a chip or some leverage. That, and Lurker weapons were valuable enough to be worth selling. With enough material and nel, he could build his own lurker sized weapon and Lothar sized armour. If he needed more nel, he could sell on some weapons.

Fridgar hadn't thought too far ahead and didn't consider what to do if he ran out of Lurkers. On one of his horns, Fridgar's bag rested, filled with his totems and medical supplies. He was more or less out of Ether from becoming the lurker, so had to make the most of his resources. In this case, they were his fists. Though, given his skill with axes and bludgeons alike, he might be able to wield a tree as a weapon against the Lurker he had in mind.

To obtain this totem, Fridgar had battled against two lurkers, one with a helmet and one with a broadsword. When he defeated his opponents, he left the weapon and armour there and resolved to collect them another trial. He visited every few trials, checking on them. They'd been fine up until the trial prior, where he found that they were gone. With his superior skill in hunting he managed to pick up on the trail of a Lurker who'd been by recently. If he paid attention to pattern, all lurkers seemed to carry one piece of equipment each. If this lurker had come by those weapons, he'd be lugging around three pieces of equipment, if not more.

Not only did a lurker like that need to be stopped, but it also meant a lot of nel to be collected. Only, he didn't really want to go alone, not after last time. Kayleigh was happy to attend, but Fridgar hadn't told her how dangerous their opponents were. Thankfully, he would be demonstrating very soon. As soon as he caught wind of her scent, Fridgar knew she was near. He would wait a little bit, biding his time and letting her find comfort with her surroundings. Then, in a particularly silent trill, Fridlurker would stomp from behind the tree, shaking the ground with tremendous force before roaring at full volume, "HELLO KAYLEIGH!!!"

[Eastern Gauthrel] Minimal danger

There wasn't really an awareness as to what Kayleigh should expect this time around, usually with Fridgar one could never know how dangerous these hunts were. His instruction to meet up out here in the wilderness of Gauthrel, granted she felt slightly capable of handling herself, proved to be a bit of a dilemma within its own right. Since her first time out here with him she'd been a little paranoid, always anxious of the potential threat that haunted the fields. The Soranaar definitely had left a memorable impression in her mind, thus Kayleigh followed the alleged trail Fridgar mentioned before.

Was it the right way though? It feels like she should've found him by now. She'd made it to the clearing of the wood, just like she'd been told to do. So...

She noticed and slowed her pace in doing so, the unusual quiet that lingered within the area. This had been a silence much similar to those other times, when both the Soranaar and the Feron were within proximity. Kayleigh was alone out here, a risk she wanted to remedy as soon as possible. Yet something... loomed further ahead. I have to be careful, She reminded herself, there's no telling what could be out here. With a right hand brought up to the hilt of her sword, Kayleigh drew it from over her shoulder slowly as she moved along. When she stepped forward her boot crushed a branch on the floor, and gave her cause to cringe as she paused in her place. Movement from the bush! The rustling of leaves became consistent as something stirred within, shuffled through the greenery as it came into her view.

A Stekir scurried out with its eyes surveying the area, quick to spot Kayleigh within its own territory. The little creature barked and started to make the "Reeee" sound, and the bard it darted towards merely sighed as she angled her weapon. She watched carefully with the sword's point toward the Stekir, a jab made for the creature as it drew in too close. The tip of the blade sank within the back of the creature, right between the shoulder blades of its pelt. Kayleigh winced a little as she next withdrew her blade from the carcass, her eyes almost completely shut to avoid the sight of the blood. "Sorry." She muttered to the dead creature with a few flicks of the blade; once she wiped the blood stained tip on the ground, she moved onward to continue where it was Fridgar awaited her.

She didn't seem to get much further apparently, as a larger much ferocious creature appeared instead. At the sudden appearance of this monster, Kayleigh's face paled upon hearing it bellow out to her loudly. What in Idalos was that?! Kayleigh retreated back a few steps and staggered, nearly falling down until she caught herself. She held the sword up with it's point aimed to the creature, while she screamed in horror at the monster's timely appearance. Wait... Did it not just say her name? How in hell did it know her name?! Kayleigh stammered to her feet and lowered her sword, a grimace cast to the thirty seven foot beast in front of her. "Not. Funny." Of course it had to be Fridgar, now that she looked at him more closely.

The pack on one of his horns mainly had been the indication, but her intuition also told her it had to be Fridgar. "You're an asshole!" She stated with a hand firmly planted on her hip, while her other hand still remained clutched on the sword.

[Eastern Gauthrel] Minimal danger

Not funny? It was pretty funny. Fridgar didn't even know Lurkers could laugh, but it appeared that they could as he started to bellow a hearty laugh across the fields. The Lurker fell on his behind, clutching his gut in a hard effort to stop his sides from splitting. Funnier yet, she pointed her sword at him! Kayleigh, slayer of giants! He was proper quaking in his non-existent boots! Even as she shouted her insult at him, he was wiping joyous tears from his eyes. He really had thought her reaction hilarious. perhaps it was also the Lurker form to blame? They were the most sadistic and evil of all the monsters of Gauthrel, after all.

"I'd say I'm sorry, but I'd be lying!" The Lurker bellowed once more in an echo. He'd cast echo on the vocals of Fridgar, as such, his mouth didn't really move as he spoke, it just maintained it's gleeful smile while his voice resounded from his being. "Okay okay, so..." Fridgar wheezed, trying to stop the laughter. When at last he was done, he cleared his throat. "This form I'm in is a Lurker, they're incredibly tall, fast and ridiculously strong. Thankfully, I'm no ordinary Lurker, I'm bigger than the rest of them by a good seven feet and can use my magic to make myself even stronger and faster."

As such, they stood a pretty good chance at this Lurker who supposedly carried around an armoury. Granted, Lurker strength was nearly infinite, but three pieces of equipment had to slow it down to some degree. "So yeah, there's minimal danger fighting one of these things. I've found one's trail, we should kill it no problem," Fridgar left out what the Lurkers did to him last time he fought them, he didn't much like to think about it, in truth. Unfortunately, he found himself recollecting the events in his dreams.

Fridgar then rolled to his feet before taking two massive steps toward the girl. He then put his hand on the floor and knelt, offering her to climb atop it. If she did, Fridgar would place her on his head. She'd find that there was only just not enough length to her arms to grab both horns and that she would have to cling to only one of them. Even then, she couldn't wrap her arms entirely around it. "I killed two of them before with a friend, left their weapons behind. I have pretty good reason to believe that some other Lurker has come along and taken these weapons."

The Lurker shook his head softly, remembering that Kayleigh might have been on top of there. "Not only is a monster like that extremely dangerous to the Lotharen horde, but it also carries a broadsword... I've worked it out to be worth nearly two onyx nel," Fridgar grinned, excited by his findings. He then scratched his chin. "Of course, we could only sell it for about six hundred gold nel or so, but I'd be happy to split the money with you for coming with me."

It was difficult to tell with the monotone nature of the echo, but Fridgar really didn't want to fight one of those things by himself, even though he could quite easily destroy it, he was... afraid. Who wouldn't be if they survived through what he did? it was fucking awful and from time to time, he could still feel it in his skin, muscles, insides. He could feel how they brutalised and violated him to this trial. To think that he was facing another one of them this trial was cause to freak and pussy out. Thankfully, that wasn't an option with Kayleigh at his side, he needed to mentor her on fighting, not running away.

taking a deep breath, Fridgar appeared to snap from a daydream after a few moments of silence. "Okay, let's get going. I picked up the trail a little while ago, I've got the Lurker's scent," he moved on. With everything set, he made his way to the treeline, pushing aside and snapping one of the great trees with such ease that it looked unintentional. Kayleigh would be dangerously close to the canopy of the great trees as he walked alone, his horns would cut through branches and the like, those branches would occasionally fall and bounce from his head. Of course, they were no bigger than twigs to him, he wouldn't much notice.

He'd often kneel and feel the ground, checking for indents, apparently already on the trail. "Okay..." The Lurker spoke again before standing. He took a deep inhale through his nose, tilting his head back slightly as he searched for the direction of the Lurker. "Okay, this way, he wasn't walking fast when he came through. I don't suppose a Lurker has many places they need to be, anyway." As he continued the journey along the trail he believed to lead to the Lurker, he closed his eyes and reached out his thoughts to his Immortals. Ilaren, if you can hear me, please guide my fists, I will fight this beast to the death with your aid. Thetros, I'm not going to lie, I'm shitting myself here. Please give me the passion to overcome my fears, the strength to push through and persist no matter what.

[Eastern Gauthrel] Minimal danger

To stand in her place and watch the once alleged man bellow and wheeze in his alternate monstrous form, had brought a sharp look from her eyes as Kayleigh silently vexed him. Though that didn't last long as she too loosened up and allowed herself to laugh a little, admittedly Fridgar's tenacity and patience for just a quick scare did pay off well enough. She had been startled well enough, surprised to where her limbs shook after the initial shock had passed. Had Fridgar been the actual monster, then sure enough she would've been doomed upon discovery. "Sorry? Better believe you'll be more than sorry when I'm done with you later!" She threatened with a finger wave to the behemoth in front of her, her stern eyes mixed with a smile.

As he started to get serious and describe the form to her, Kayleigh rested her hands on her hips and looked Fridgar all over. He was bigger than the usual then? Didn't mean that they were any less impressive quite honestly, just that he took a more larger and likely hardier form. She hoped that to be the case at least, either way the fact they were out here hunting... Was Fridgar actually serious about there being minimal danger in this? Maybe for him perhaps. For Kayleigh however she was too frail and puny, compared to such a prime and powerful creature. "That had better be a true statement Fridgar, I swear to Pier and Pre if it's not then... uh..." Her sternness lessened as she wondered how she'd punish such a man, granted he was already a towering giant that could easily resist her physical threats. "I'll do something you won't like!"

At the offering of his hand for a lift Kayleigh sheathed her weapon momentarily before, her ascension to his head met with a quick gasp from the sudden shift. Compared to his natural human form Kayleigh felt much smaller now, practically like an insect in the hand of this creature. Well... smaller animal felt more fitting to be exact, all the same she reached and held onto one of his horns upon arrival. Now that she had found herself situated on his head, she admired the world from the newfound height she'd reached. "So we're doing this for the weapons then? To hunt it down since this lone Lurker has claimed them?" She checked to be sure she followed so far, granted her role in this still seemed... small. Now that she thought of it, Kay could only wonder what her role was exactly.

She didn't feel comfortable or even see herself fit to fight one of these creatures, was she to just ride along Fridgar's head the entire trip while they hunted this beast? "Very well," She called out above him, "you're in the lead here then Fridgar." As Kayleigh stated this she clung to his left horn tightly, her form knelt to her knees so she could try to avoid the collisions to come. She hadn't considered the problem of being faced with branches and obstacles overhead, but with Fridgar being such a tall and rigid form, well that certainly changed quickly given her position in this ride. "Could do well to keep your head down though." She muttered to herself just before he seemed to lean down, likely to do his hunter thing and track the beast more or less. Kayleigh watched as he checked the area of the floor, curious to see how he picked up the trail of the beast they tailed. "Don't suppose Lurker's have important matters to attend to like us humans." She reasoned as Fridgar seemed to pause next, after he seemed determined they were on the right path.

[Eastern Gauthrel] Minimal danger

Safe to say, the human's threats fell upon enormous deaf ears. In this state, there were very few humans that would be able to beat him. Alistair might have been the only one capable of such a feat, even then, it would be a long tiresome effort. The towering titan merely wiped joyous tears from his eyes at hearing Kayleigh's tiny voice make empty, playfull threats.

He still picked her up and positioned her on his head all the same, taking note of her trust for him. Most people's first instincts would have been to run away from the monster. But, knowing it was Fridgar, the girl put her whole life in his hands. Maybe she just didn't realise the danger of her position? One wrong move and her body could have ended up mangled in his palm.

The more he lingered on the thought, pushing deeper into the thick forestry, he began to realise just what he was doing. Ultimately, Kayleigh was being put at risk of a painful, sadism-induced slow death via lurker. This was no job for a normal human, but here he was, dragging her along. Why? For his comfort. The giant fell silent part way through their journey, the atmosphere growing heavy, dire, almost intimidating in a way.

Finally, the human carrier stopped in his tracks. Unknown to Kayleigh, they were dangerously close to the Lurker now. In all his fear, his faith in his immortals served little good. His faith in Kayleigh was even less comforting. She couldn't protect him, why had he even thought of bringing her along? No, this was foolish. Very slowly, the giant began to kneel. As his back knee pressed into the bare soil of the forest floor, Fridgar lowered the upper half of his body until he bowed completely on both knees with his chin resting on the floor.

"I'm sorry, Kayleigh," the deep voice of the Lurker echoed with remorse. "You can't come with me, you have to go," Fridgar informed, firm and unwavering in his tone; he was serious about this. "Get off, now. Go home, I don't want you here." he wasn't nearly skilled enough a rupturer to drop her in a portal and send her on her way, so, he had to be sure that she wouldn't try to follow him. Yes, it would hurt their friendship, but at least Kayleigh would still be alive. Even if they weren't friends after this, he cared about her.

Once the human was safely off, whether he had to pluck her or she went willingly, the titan would press into the earth and rise to the challenge. A look of duty assumed his crimson eyes, albeit shallow and frail. This was a monster he created and a monster he had to defeat by himself. No innocent blood would be spilled by his errors again, certainly not the blood of his friends. Taking in a deep, shaky breath of air, he nodded firm as his nostrils flared with the passing of his exhale. "I'll see you later, okay?" the Lurker offered, not meeting her eyes. Then, with his frail confidence in tow, the Lurker set off in pursuit of his demons.

[Eastern Gauthrel] Minimal danger

Image
They seemed to be in a stroll along the forest area as Fridgar continued onward, just shortly after he seemed sure of the creature's direction. In all honesty Kay hadn't any idea what went on his head, and for the moment she had been too worried about what hovered over it. Eventually though his pace slowed down some until, finally, it seemed to reach a point where he stopped and slowly lowered his head down to the ground for some reason. Did he want her to climb off? Was it safer for her to be off now? "Whoa, wait what?" She hollered above him as she carefully stepped down off of him, Fridgar made it apparent that he didn't want her along after all.

Yet he made this clear now... when they were well out here in Gauthrel, where she would be in danger all by herself...

"You want me to go back home alone." She checked with him while her gaze sharpened to his monstrous mug, her cheeks slightly flushed at the sudden indecision he presented to her. "I get it," Kay grudgingly forced a smile, "it's because I'm useless against something like this. I'll only slow you down." Her tone had sharpened as well when she demonstrated an attitude with him, her eyes merely sent in a roll to the treetops as she started to walk away. "Fine Fridgar, but next time try and be a little nicer about it." She sneered before letting their brief argument develop any further, she had been apt to go onward and make away from him. It wasn't that she'd become completely upset with him, more or less just crossed with the fact he changed his mind. She'd anticipated going out to hunt with him today but now... well now she just wanted to storm off on her own. Thus she did. She moved onward with fire in her steps, eager to march her way back closer to Uthaldria where she'd be safe again.

Almost defensively she drew her own blade once more, determined to be prepared for anything dangerous. Part of her wanted more Stekir to show up now, so she could kick them around and vent her frustration out on them. Still she marched onward with sword in hand as she wandered the path they'd walked, keen to believe that backtracking would be successful in getting her back safely. Sometimes Kayleigh would step or brush her feet against fallen branches and twigs, which irresponsibly created snaps underneath her feet as she continued to walk unaware. That is until the sound of a large creature seemed to brush against a tree, somewhere a few kilometers off from where she had reached.

Kayleigh stopped in her place with an alertness in her eyes, worry found in her expression as she waited to listen for more sound. It had to be... a very large creature, bulky since some of the trees groaned from its weight. It course had been directly towards Kayleigh and for a moment, she only stood there waiting to see just what would reach her. First she could see the horns of the monster, and then when she saw the head she finally relaxed. "Just stop Fridgar. It was funny the first time, but the effect is lost the second time around." Yet as the rest of the body came around from the trees Kayleigh noticed something, this Lurker seemed to have something Fridgar lacked earlier. A large and dangerous broadsword.

"Oh..." She muttered with her cheeks paled at the sight of the monster, quickly she twisted to make a run for the trees behind her. If she could find cover than perhaps the creature would overlook her presence, if it had yet noticed that she were out in the open like an idiot.

[Eastern Gauthrel] Minimal danger

Kayleigh

Overview

Such a shame this didn't get finished - it was motoring up to be an interesting thread - I'd have liked to see what happened. I enjoyed it - and Kayleigh's willingness to go into danger on Fridgar's word. She's a trusting sort! Let me know if you've got any questions.
