22nd Ashan 717
“I can’t take you with me,” Elyna murmured against her daughters forehead. She cradled the child’s head against her shoulder, arms wrapped tight around her. She inhaled the sweet scent of Elsie’s skin and pressed kisses to the pale skin. Elsie wriggled in her Mother’s arms, discontent.
“Dadadada?” She twisted, peering at the door as though the man was about to walk in. Elyna held her tighter, and Elsie pushed against her, “Dada!” She demanded.
“Dada’s coming,” Elyna promised and stood, rocking the child back and forth as she walked. Pacing between the door and the window. The sun hadn’t yet started to rise, yet Elsie wasn’t sleeping which meant Elyna wasn’t sleeping. It went in cycles. The quiet request for her Father, which when it wasn’t met, became angrier until dissolving into inconsolable tears. At least until Elyna, or Anna managed to sooth her, which could take hours. Sometimes Elsie then slept and when she woke, the skyrider would try and keep her occupied, playing with blocks of woods. Usually the baby enjoyed nothing more than waiting for a wobbling tower to be built, before attacking it with a roar of delight. Even the tallest towers couldn’t distract the child for long, before the question would turn once again to Dada. If Elyna hadn’t been so desperate herself, to Malcolms return, she perhaps would have been a little jealous of her daughter’s devotion to her sire. As it was, she could understand Elsie’s pain.
“Mummy’s going to bring him back,” Elyna made her second promise as the baby succumbed in her arms and slept, sniffing, with tears dried on the soft cheeks. There was no alternative. Alive they had said. They needed Malcolm alive. Alive so that he could be found and he could come home.
Elyna lay Elsie down in the cradle, tucking her in beneath yellow blankets before withdrawing from the room. Dressed for flying she wore dark leggings, a shirt and a woollen tunic beneath a leather jacket.
Anna was waiting in the hallway, hands wrung together. A thin woman with blonde hair, she shared similar features with her sister, Emily. The young mother had fallen on hard times, and with three mouths to feed, as well as her own, had been pleased to serve as a nurse for Elsie and the coin that it bought. Elyna knew that the woman, with a sharp noise and wide-eyes was truthful and that she loved her children and Elsie too. If Anna noticed that Elsie developed faster than her own baby, Mathius, then the woman didn’t mention it. She’d been given a set of rooms in the Burhan house and it wasn’t unusual for the children to play together. The young mother looked up then and studied Elyna.
“Emily says that you’ll be gone for a few trials?”
Elyna nodded. She’d left her scale mail armour and weapons outside of the bedroom. Now she pulled the familiar weight on, over her shoulders. “I’ve got to bring him home. They’ve had five trials to travel so we need to extend the search further.”
Anna remained silent before taking a breath, “she misses you when you’re gone. Both of you. Lady Burhan, I’m not one to judge-”
“But?” Elyna looked down as she pulled at the fastens. There was always a but when a sentence started that way.
“But you’re getting larger now with a new babe on the way, and your daughter needs you.”
“She needs her Father,” Elyna gave up trying to secure the armour over the swell of her bump and pulled it up, over her shoulders again, discarding it with care. Nothing woke Elsie quicker than a crash of armour. “And you’re right…if I wait much longer I won’t be any good to search for him.” The Skyrider searched the blue eyes before her. “I’ll be back as soon as I can be. I’ll make sure Emily comes home safe as well.” She reached out, squeezed the woman’s shoulder and turned. Making her way through the shadows of her family home. It was hard to walk away from Elsie, and she’d never felt as though Anna disagreed with her before. In some ways, her friend’s sister understood the lifestyle of members of the Iron Hand, better than most commanders.
Before dawn, Elyna shook Vakhanor awake. “Vakh? Vakh it’s time to go.”

Anxiety saw Vakh fed up and in pain when he woke the next morning, still sore with immortal forsaken stitches. The trials that let to this one left the smith a broken man, bound to this life by the promise to a woman he loved to save her husband. Was this what his life was going to be?

With a heavy heart Vakhanor thought back to his little boy and remembered, remembered the joy that Bjorn brought to his life. All of the times he had took for granted the little child's presence and yet, the child had been everything to him. Locking away the memory, Vakhanor let out a deep sigh as he realised death would be a better answer for him than this life, and he yearned for it.

"Immortals, please bring Elyna and Malcolm together again. And Bjorn if you're up there little buddy, I'm coming soon. I just have to finish something down here," he prayed, water pouring from his eyes "I've missed you so much. Let's hope the gods don't hate me for all I've done aye? Maybe this will earn me a little bit of favour. Keep strong my boy, I love you."

"Vakh?" a voice called from his side "Vakh it's time to go." Not quite asleep and already prepared and dressed as well as he could be, in a pair of leather jerkins and the burnt rags that remained of his shirt the smith had been laying there in wait for her to fetch him. There was a solemn finality in the act of his intentions that made him feel worlds apart from the woman beside him, soon she would be happy again and he could leave this world. "Alright," he replied, gritting his teeth as he got up and stepped away from the comfort of the bed. The wounds still stung fresh like that had two trials ago, but it didn't matter. Whatever the pain, he had told Elyna that he would help her get Malcolm back.

Vakhanor gathered his strength and lead the way through the doorway, that was his promise.

Elyna watched her friend as he moved. Then she walked towards him, “you look as though you’re in agony,” her hands landed on his shoulders once more. “Vakh, I’m going to be flying for a few days…why don’t you rest a little longer? There is a bed here, even a room upstairs you can use…” His clothes were shredded, stained with soot and blood and she wondered if he’d even had the chance to wash. This was a large house and there was more than enough hot water for the man to enjoy a bath.
“…Vakh,” she found herself staring at him, “do you have anywhere to go?” The skyrider had thought he could accompany the army as they moved below the riders, setting up camps, further and further away from the city. It would mean the skyriders would circle and return somewhere to rest for the night, before setting off and extending their search the next day. Caught up in her own determination to find Malcolm, the woman realised that she still knew very little about the Smith. She had assumed that he still kept his forge in the city…but the city had been damaged in the Qe’Dreki attack and resulting Dragon-Fire. Then there was the rumour of a marauding beast that couldn’t be killed.
She searched his face as she stood before him, worried that he might start to sway. If he fell, could she catch him? The young woman owed her friend her life, and as eager as she was to depart before dawn. Suspected that there were wrongs that needed to be made right.

In the early hours of the morning patience was not his virtue and Elyna's questions were getting on his nerves. The sword he had been wearing the night of the fire, the clothes on his back and a small pouch of coin were all that remained of him. Seething beneath the heat of Elyna's hand against his burn, Vakhanor stepped away from the affection and carried on forward paying very little attention to the details of his surroundings.

"No," the raging man halted, starring back into the softness of her emerald eyes like an animal backed into a corner "I've got nothing." Adamant not to make issue of his injury, Vakhanor focused on his rage to get him through the pain and was in very little mood for conversation when the maid ran at him in an attempt to prompt him to go back to bed. "You shouldn't be walking," the woman shouted, running along behind them "You'll rip the stitches!"

He glared at the servant girl "You have been kind to me. I'll give you this warning. Back off," he growled, storming past. Pain turned the man into a hazed frenzy, shouting people whirled around his vision and their voices had faded into the distance.

"Must...save," the faint mutter of words left his lips as he felt himself falling, face first onto the ground.

Juuuust shy of 1,000 words, but I decided to award the point anyway. Also, the story felt like it was missing a conclusion by Elyna.

Very short thread. There wasn't a whole lot here I could find knowledge-wise, but the writing was still very good and I awarded what I could find.
