Dagnyr Subrace Opinions

There are currently 7 known Dagnyr subraces. When referring to a Dagnyr subrace, they commonly combine the prefix of the race with the suffix of the subrace, making a Nuhl Dagnyr into a Dag'nuhl.

Nuhl

Born under the dense cover of Hollowmist, Le'ore, the Dag'nuhl is perhaps the most recognisable of the Dagnyr as their profile is the largest in width, if not height. They are comparable to the hyenas of Idalos, with distinctive hunched shoulders, thick necks, and shorter, stubbier muzzles much wider in feature than most. Their largest fangs are on their lower jaws, instead of their upper, which makes them poor for the initial damage of a bite, but excellent at grappling and tearing chunks away from dense meat.

As they are Touched by Hollowmist, they hold an unnatural calm in dire situations.

Dag'nuhl stereotypes show them as hulking creatures with muscles as large as their appetites, since their bodies require more food than average to sustain themselves. In reality, this is closer to half again as much as the average human would consume, however rumours and stereotypes have a tendency to overdramatise this.

Ruen

Born under the Omenmist, Ka'ore, the Dag'ruen are stockier, sturdier, and hold thicker coats. They are comparable to the wolves of Idalos, with long and pointed muzzles with long yellow fangs that often stick out past their own lips and give them a distinctive drawl when they speak. Their fingers end in blunt claws longer than those found on average, and while they can't sink deep, they can cause significant damage if strength is applied to them.

As they are Touched by Omenmist, they have an unusual sixth sense of danger.

The Dag'ruen are known for being tough, with most stories relating to Dag'ruen emphasising their ability to shrug off serious wounds and holding little personal regard for themselves in fights. They are known for being blunt in conversations, speaking their minds in ways that some will find refreshingly forward, while others will find improper or even insulting.

Lohr

Born under the Palemist, Fa'ore, Dag'lohr are a taller subrace with shorter, thinner fur. They share the most features with Idalos coyotes, with the narrowest profile of the Dagnyr. Dag'lohr are recognisable by a distinctive lopping walk and their coat colours are often brighter, sandy or pale colours. Their tails are also noticeably longer than other members of the Dagnyr.

As they are Touched by Palemist, they have unnaturally keen darkvision.

Perception of the Dag'lohr by other members of their species is mixed. They are stereotypically seen as sharp and critical speakers, which depending on the person can either be seen as enthusiastic and possibly even helpful, but others treat as abrasive and unkind. They are also considered the most quick-witted.

Mune

Born under the Foulmist, Cu'ore, Dag'mune have sharp and angular features, tall and pointed ears, and the most stark colouration of their kin, with many lacking fur patterns entirely and showing matte black or dusky tones in their hides. Most distinctive are their naturally narrowed eyes, that many use to their advantage to give a perpetual imperious scowl.

As they are Touched by Foulmist, their fur carries no scent.

For a species reliant on scent, the distinct absence of the Dag'mune's presence in many noses is a notable one. Other Dagnyr subraces believe the Dag'mune are one of the few that exclusively prefer the company of themselves, and are often cold or emotionally unavailable. In reality, on average, they are no less sociable than any other subrace.

Kell

Born under the Lostmist, Mo'ore, Dag'kell are stocky, thickly-built creatures with rounded shoulders, wider snouts, smaller ears and larger hands than many of their counterparts. They closely resemble Idalosian dingoes of the plainlands and carry the kind of hardiness in their physique that one is only born with.

As they are Touched by Lostmist, they hold an internal compass that makes them always able to find their way back home.

They are often portrayed favourably as adventurers in stories, and are seen as unflinching in the face of trial and trouble, making them welcome in many social circles. However, they are also seen as excitable and rather headstrong, which is as much a liability as it can be a virtue, in certain circumstances. These preconceptions are mostly drawn from stories and legends of old however, with little basis on personal interaction.

Fenn

Born under the Vaguemist, Tu'ore, Dag'fenn have rounded ears and more varied spotted or painted coats, created for hotter climates. Their shorter teeth are larger in number than many of their counterparts, with shorter canine fangs but sharper throughout, giving them the deadliest bite of all Dagnyr. Some are also known to sharpen their teeth, as much for practicality as it is for ferocity, and habits among the subrace often relate to a distinctive grin to show off their pride.

As they are Touched by Vaguemist, once per season, their touch is able to disrupt a person's equilibrium, making it difficult to stand upright or maintain their balance.

Perceptions from the other races find Dag'fenn to be energetic and rebellious, balanced equally between a welcome addition to most circles, with a constant wariness from those with something to lose. They have historically made excellent 'scrappy underdog' stereotypes.

Skorn

Born under the Itchmist, Sa'ore, Dag'skorn are a mongrel mix of generic canid traits with little defining features beyond their inherent inhuman appearance. They are the least defined of the species, since they either seem to mix the defining traits of others until they are easily mistaken for another subrace entirely at a distance, or seem to hold no defining traits at all - only recognisable as Dag'skorn through process of elimination once all other options are ruled out. In this, they are much like mongrels among Dagnyr, even though the subrace is not linked to parentage whatsoever.

As they are Touched by Itchmist, they are immune to fleabites and the other detrimental effects of biting insects - though this does not stop them appearing on their body or spreading to others.

Their ability to blend in among other subraces and appear to be of many of them or none at all at the same time is equally a blessing and a curse. The Dag'skorn are treated as untrustworthy and devious by other races, a valuable asset when under the control of another, but a dangerous rogue agent when under no command but its own.
