Genna sat quietly in a room in the clinic. With her was her assistant Michial, and also one of her gold clocks, Shemsa. The room had been set up for a test that Genna had wanted to run on this particular trial. Every since she had been given the ability of Healer’s sight Genna had been slowly learning to master it and use it to better understand the body and how things work. Recently she had the chance to looking into people who were affected by drugs and it was while doing this she realized the brain was affected a lot.
She also realized that there understanding of how the brain really functioned as limited. Most of it came from studying the brains of the dead. Now she could watch the active and living brain.
Michial who probable understood her ability second best to herself had volunteered when she had started to brainstorm the idea. So now here they were. Genna stood next to a couch that she would lay on while using her ability. Next to it was a desk with a stack of papers already on it. Shemsa would be sitting there recording what information Genna passed on and keep track of what Michial was doing at any given time.
“Okay Michial. Lets start with you just sitting in the chair while Genna just studies your brain and basic patterns.” Shemsa said. The young man nodded and took a seat, Genna laid down on the couch and took a deep breath. She felt completely safe with these two but the moment she slipped into the healer’s sight the experiment was at Shemsa’s direction. This wasn’t something Genna could just casual come in and out of, and the time it would take to watch really meant she had to trust these two completely to keep it organized.
Genna closed her eyes and slipped into healer sight. She focused the ability on the her assistant, it really wasn’t hard to distinguish between the two. Genna moved from the total view of Michial and his health and slipped into a more focused view of his brain. As she moved closer with the ability she had to bring the brain more and more into focus while bring other parts out of focus. Soon she could see the brain and she was aware of the basic structure of the brain. The cerebrum was the large part and had two halves. Below that was the cerebellum was a smaller part of the brain and then there was the brain stem.
It took a little effort but Genna began to describe what she saw. She didn’t know it but her voice didn’t come out loud, nor was it well structured, but she stated that the basic parts she appeared the same. Genna continued to focus on the brain. As she watched she could see the blood coming in an and going out, but as she watched she could tell more then that was departing from the brain. Based on what they talked about Michial should just be sitting there. The brain was active ever where and signals were being sent to and from. At this moment the most active seemed to be in the brain stem.
Genna mumbled about the brain stem being the most active, and that there were pulses coming and going from the brain. Genna’s focus latched onto one of the pulses and followed it away from the brain. It traveled fast, and Genna felt it terminate at the heart and with it came a contracting that moved the blood around. She watched as more pulse came towards the heart, but after watching she saw that the heart was sending pulses back. Again hitchhiking on the pulse she followed it back to the same area. Genna selected a different pulse and found herself ending it the lungs. Back and forth she went, comment about the different areas the pulses took her.
The medic couldn’t have said how long she watched and studied the pulses. As originally planned Michael eventually stood up and began to move. Genna was suddenly confront by a new series of pulses coming from the other parts of the brain. She drew back and watched seeing pulses coming from the right and left sides of the cerebrum, with back up pulses coming from the cerebellum. Then a part between the two sides of the cerebrum drew her attention. The two halves of the brain were talking not only to the body but each other in an symphony of pulses. Genna watched with fascination the coming and going of these commands. After a while she piggybacked on the pulses coming out of the right side of the brain and found them instructing the left leg to move, or the left arm to swing. Upon following the pulses coming from the other side of the brain she found them controlling the right side. Slowly Genna began to admire the symphony that was the brain. She returned once again to the brain and following the pulses of the cerebrum found it working in sink with the other parts to balance the movements to manipulate the muscles
It was then that Genna found her focus beginning to faulter. She had to hold on more tightly to the pulses. Realizing that she was exhausting herself she pulled away from her study of the brain and came back. She found it difficult to open her eyes. Her body was saying just keep them close, just sleep. Genna forced her eyes opened and forced herself off of the couch. She swayed slightly and the other two caught her.
She looked around her brain fuzzy but picking up that the shadows from the window had moved significantly. She asked. “How long has it been?”
“About two breaks.” Michial said even as Shemsa instructed Genna to sit back down.
“That is good to know.” Genna said not resisting the direction to sit back down.
“Genna, we can go over the data after you get your strength back.” Shemsa said.
“Agreed, but lets get me back to my office.” Genna said. “This room is needed for others.” Shemsa sighed buy helped her get to her own office where Genna forced herself to eat and then took a short nap.
Once Genna could function later that trial, she sat with a notebook and Shemsa. The two were working to sync up Genna’s own memory of what happened in her study and the notes the gold clock had taken while from Genna’s ramblings. They were learning a few different things about the brain and the capabilities of Genna’s ability. Genna hadn’t ever used it so intensely before, and she knew that she would have to increase her strength and endurance on the subject. Also buried so deeply into the systems of the body she couldn’t know exactly what was occurring. She could distinguish between sitting and moving, but she couldn’t figure out say if Michial had been walking or jumping.
“Maybe as I study more I can understand better what the pulses from the Cerebellum indicate. I would think the muscle stabilization for walking would be different from jumping.” Genna mused.
“Genna you are getting ahead of this discussion. We are still trying to peace together basics.” The gold cloak said slightly flustered. There was a lot of information.
“Sorry you are right.” Genna said. She took paper and drew a basic outline of the brain from a couple angles. “How much of the brain have you studied.” It was a subject that the world didn’t know much about, and surgeons tended to know more one the subject then your every trial doctor.
Shemsa identified the basic parts, but nothing much beyond that. Genna indicated to the Cerebrum. “I could tell that the division in this part isn’t because of Aesthetic. There really are two parts, that function separately, but at the same time in a partnership. The right side control the left part of the body, and the left the right side.”
“Wait that seems switched.” Shemsa said.
“I agree, but I watched it enough time.” Genna said and the two woman continued talking about what they saw. Genna eventually felt the had merged the notes as best as possible after almost two. She knew she wasn’t done though. The notebook was full of facts and ideas and thoughts. There was something more she had to do.
That evening after putting Lilabella to bed, Genna sat quietly in the library while her father read. She pulled up scarf, and then plucked a golden thread from her hair, and began to embroider on it She was embroidering words on it and while doing so she focused on the memory of the study of the brain. Using Sentinment Genna imparted that memory into the scarf. Genna wanted to be able to share the memory with other’s whose intelligent and research ability surpassed even her own. The embroidery wasn’t beautiful, just practical, Genna was still working on improving her needlework, but that was why she had chosen something simple like a scarf for this memory share.
Once she had finished the scarf she arranged for it to be send to Faith, and prepared a letter explaining what she was studying, and asking her to review what she could, and that Genna would keep Faith abreast on her research.
