Black Peak is a small village surrounded on all sides by the Cold Mountains. It is nestled into a small plateau which is high in the mountains. This plateau is large enough for the few dozen houses which make up Black Peak, and the place is accessible by a single winding trail through the mountains. Many might ask why anyone would live in Black Peak when it is arguably one of the most remote villages on Idalos and the answer is twofold.

First, Black Peak is home to a number of hot springs which emerge from deep in the mountains. They bubble up and form natural pools of warm water which is rumoured to have healing properties. However, the main reason that people choose to live here is because Black Peak is home to an enormous observatory. Geographical situations combine to make it an ideal place for observing the night sky. The mountains around the sunken plateau are high enough that they block out and ambient light around. Importantly, they are also black - a side effect of the same underground springs which form the steaming pools of warm water, even in the sub-zero temperatures.

The ice and sub-zero temperatures should be a hindrance to the equipment here, but the pools ambient temperature helps and the glass of the observatory and the telescope it houses are made in Scalvoris with specialist glassmakers from Egilrun.

There are a few dozen small homes dotted around, so maybe as many as 200 people live and work in Black Peak overall.

Black Peak has a high level of lawfulness.
It has a moderate military presence, mainly Rangers who are protecting the observatory and who hunt for food.

Danger Level
In terms of physical safety, this is a very hard environment.
The weather here is still very cold, but this is probably the mildest / most livable in area of Viden.
Geting here, however, is very tricky. There is a single path which winds through mountains.

Due to the nature of Viden, any location outside the Fortress will have survivability facts. Please note that where we identify the need for a skill level, what skill that may be is down to the story.
