[Certificate Homework] Reading is for Bookworms

22nd of Vhalar 721

Zemos was in a less travelled section of the library, as he awaited the arrival of his study partner, the snow woman Elisabeth. She seemed very well read, and had admitted to being a researcher or an assistant researcher in Viden. But not a student. Which struck Zemos as a vast contradiction in terms. Weren't all researchers students by design? Perhaps her enrollment wasn't formal or official. Perhaps she was part of a secret sect that only had tacit ties to the Academy or was part of a rival institution. But then, it'd be hard to imagine Yvithia allowing such gaps in information security.

Then again, she did have several campuses affiliated throughout eastern Idalos, from what Zemos knew.

For his research session, he'd brought along a pair of maps he'd bought. One eleven days past, of the Scaltoth. Another, one that was every bit as impressive with illustrations and accurate (one would hope) measurements of distance of Immortal's Tongue.

He was currently in a less travailed part of the library, inspecting a particularly moldy and un-looked at tome, which was half eaten by bookworms. Idly, he wondered if he could develop a form of pesticide that might prevent the growth of bookworms. The thought elicited a sharp pain from the Egg, as he even contemplated harming an insect. "Ow!" He exclaimed.

Do not make poison for our brethren, Father.
Mother will be cross!

"Yes, yes. You're right." Zemos said, gasping as he recovered from the bit of sharp pain from his head. He shook it, and took a few more books from the shelf, hoping that it contained some information he needed.

Once that was done, he walked along back toward a table that was nearer to the entrance, so the snow woman would see him when she came in. He hoped she was serious about the appointment. He rather hoped he'd have a professional researcher to help him. He could've asked anyone of the librarians for help, but they often gave him strange looks for his mutation, and of course his breath wasn't the freshest on his worst days.

This thought prompted him to slip a mint leaf into his mouth. He'd had a rotten breakfast, and didn't want to scare away the snow woman too.

Arc 721, 22 Vhalar

Elisabeth was running a bit late, which meant she would arrive in the library only ten bits before the agreed-upon time, not fifteen. The young leader of Haven preferred being early, knowing that any number of things could cause delays, and tried to proactively pad travel times to account for the unknown.

The mage smoothed down her black and silver overcoat, adjusting her bag a bit on her back. Long gone were the trials of dresses, now preferring overcoats and leggings for their versatility and ease of movement when traveling. There was always work to be done at the settlement so her style of dress got even more basic when there, although Elisabeth had to admit that she enjoyed the times she was able to dress up, for they reminded her of a wonderful memory.

The meeting she was on the way to was something of a mystery, but curiosity always won out with Elisabeth. The strange man she had sparred with at the Combat Festival had suggested it, and she hadn’t seen any reason to turn down the chance to learn more about her inquisitive new acquaintance.

The library wasn’t a place Elisabeth frequented greatly during her time in Scalvoris, usually opting for Scholar’s Nook when she was in Scalvoris Town, but something about libraries always soothed the young woman. A reminder of her time in Viden, perhaps. It had been quite some time since being in the city. Wait, the last visit had been with Balthazar….in Zi’da 721. Had it already been almost a whole arc?!? Time marched on, and that visit to the balcony in Viden seemed like a different lifetime.

Her eyes immediately cast around for him as soon as she entered the building, finding him at a table near the entrance. It was easy to see how people might think him odd, but she had long stopped judging people on their looks, considering she knew several people with curious marks and mutations – Balthazar and herself being two of them. Her mutations, however, weren’t readily visible, but her marks were. There were bands of light around her forearm and dots on her hand and wrist - gifts from Xiur and Qylios - although people usually didn’t ask her about them.

Waving a bit at him, she quickly made her way over to the table he was at, deciding that perhaps it was time for an introduction. “Hello again! It's good to see you. Did you have anything in particular you wanted to research today?

Zemos had been inspecting the moth and bookworm-eaten tome that he’d selected, wondering if it’d turn out to be another sample of strange erotica, like the kind he and Sophia had sussed out of the forbidden cloister of the Viden Academy’s library. No, he was sure this was something else entirely. He found mention of a lot of strange references to events and history he had no clue of, things about the priests of this Immortal or that spiritualist. It was all a bit over Zemos’ area of expertise.

Finally, she arrived, announcing herself. Zemos stood up from his chair, pushing it behind him as he rose. He waved excitedly, and answered as the egg buzzed suggested alterations to his own returned greeting, ”Hello! Sno-lizabeth… I mean Elisabeth from Viden! Yes. The snow woman.

So saying, he stuck his hand out to shake hers, intent on sussing out any diagnostic peculiarities about her today. He didn’t expect to find her in poorer health, but you never knew when someone might catch a bug. And Zemos had a lot of interest in acquiring bugs for himself. Why should everyone else get to keep the most interesting diseases to themselves?!

”Yes! We shall study Lisirra… I’m a student of toxicology, and as such she is a very intriguing point of study. The Immortal of toxins and insects…” He kept his voice lowered, as he spoke of Lisirra, lest anyone nearby catch listen of their conversation. Lisirra wasn’t exactly a well-loved Immortal, afterall, and Zemos wasn’t fool enough to think otherwise. It was why her followers didn’t tend to announce themselves. Mervani had cautioned him against announcing his own affliction…

”Rather, the lineage of Lisirra… I have these books! I don’t know if any of them have what we’re looking for. The family of Lisirra or similar. You are a researcher are you not? Could you help me find books about the Hive Mother’s lineage?”

Zemos swallowed his anxiety, hoping she wouldn’t turn around and run now. Some people were cowards, but he didn’t think the snow woman would be. No, there was an implacable quality about her, that he’d sussed out during their fight in the yard.

”Do you know much of medicine, and the formulation of antidotes, also? I was wondering if I might find some tomes also pertaining to that…” His hand swept over the books he’d gathered, with a sour frown, ”These don’t appear to be relevant to my search.”

Arc 721, 22 Vhalar

The young mage found her companion in fine spirits, it seemed. Following his lead, Elisabeth grasped his offered hand, shaking it firmly before settling in to see what subjects they would be pursuing that trial.

Zemos lowered his voice and spoke of an interest in Lisirra. The young mage had to admit that she hadn’t seen that coming at all, although what did one really know of what sparked curiosity in others? While his subject of choice wasn’t something she had learned a great deal about, their joint research would be educational for her, and that was something that made her happy.

As he explained it, Lisirra was the Immortal of Toxins and Insects. Probably good information for her to have as she continued her studies of the Immortals. After meeting so many of them during her adventures, she had often wondered how they all connected. In the back of her mind, Elisabeth knew she had heard the name of the Immortal before, but where? It took a few trills, but she finally remembered that someone had said something about Lisirra being responsible for cursing Linca before the Forging. Oh boy.

Glancing at Zemos, he seemed utterly excited to start combing through books, and Elisabeth considered whether she should tell him what she knew. It wasn’t much, and it really didn’t have anything to do with what he was asking her about, so the mage decided to let it slide and focus on the subject he wanted them to investigate.

Nodding, she gave him a quick smile and looked over his collection of books. “I’m sure we can find something in these books, and if not, there are always others. That’s the beauty of research – there’s always someplace else to look for information. Sources aren’t even always books. You could go to the Glass Temple, for example. But, let’s try the books first.”

Before she had a chance to dig into the first book, he asked Elisabeth about her knowledge of medicine. A specific topic he was looking for was the creation of antidotes, and he wasn’t sure the books he had already selected fit the bill. “I have some basic knowledge of how to treat illnesses and wounds, but nothing on actual remedies or medicine. My secret for quickly finding the right books? Ask the librarian to point you in the right direction.”

Rising, Elisabeth swiftly made her way over to the attendant and asked to be pointing in the direction of the medical books. Then, to make sure it was the right area, she further inquired about books on the creation of medicine itself, which in her mind would logically include things like antidotes.

A man standing nearby overheard their conversation and offered a quick word of advice. “You might want to try chemistry books too. Chemistry has a lot to do with the development of medicinal substances.” After thanking him, the librarian and Elisabeth disappeared for a few bits before the young woman returned, carrying a few books on what the attendant had assured her were medicinal chemistry. “Here. These might be more what you are looking for. Why don’t you look in these for your antidote information, and I’ll look for something on Lisirra’s family or heritage?” It felt right to divide and conquer, and since he seemed to have a better grasp on medicine than she did, he would know when he came across the correct information.

The Snow Woman seemed to have a good idea of what she was about in a library. Zemos, for all the time he'd spent in Viden, still had trouble sorting through the labyrinthine organizational systems of the libraries, much less finding relevant study materials. He as much more of one for practical experience and empirical knowledge.

He wondered for a moment, as he caught the glance of Elisabeth, if she was wary of his own curiosity into the subject of Lisirra. But he dismissed it just as quickly. He wouldn't get anywhere if he didn't take risks, and he felt this one was safe enough for his purpose.

"You are a doctor!?" Zemos asked, having listened to her speak on her knowledge of wound treatments. However, she confessed that she knew little enough of remedies. He trusted that she was telling the truth, afterall, few would feign ignorance to a subject they were an expert at. So he supposed he'd have the advantage of knowledge over her. "Oh, no remedies? Hmm..."

"Her hands were made for healing injury,
Treating the wounds that would elsewise fester, father!

Zemos nodded to himself, and the egg. Then he continued about his work, flipping through the book to find any passages that stuck out. Several people seemed to come out of the woodwork as Zemos discussed with Elisabeth what he was looking for. This made him slightly anxious, as he had mentioned Lisirra, against Mervani's advice. But surely they wouldn't suspect that he as one of her toys?

Toy! Toy! Toy!
Dance Puppet!

Zemos took the books gratefully, and slowly went through perusing the contents. Thankfully, several parts that were slightly relevant to his research were earmarked. Facts were found in the books, about how to counteract poisons and stop their effects. It occurred to Zemos that putting a stopper on poisonous effects could just as easily be used to design a toxin that was tailor-made to trigger at a specific stimulus. But he tucked that piece of inspiration away in his mind for later.

He searched more through the books, until he found a passage regarding treatment of psychological poisons. Poisons of the mind?

What is this, Toyfather?
Poisons that worm into the brainbox?

Zemos read these passages voraciously, learning more about toxins and chemicals that could affect the mind. There were several classes of these 'narcotics' and 'psychotropics' that the book went into detail over. Some of them meant for recreational use and often available on the black market. Then there were others that were proscribed by doctors, for the treatment of various ailments or passing effects. Zemos wondered if these narcotics and psychotropics could be combined, to create a mind-control pill. It was an intriguing thought...

"Yes please! Check those books for the Hive Queen's information? Thank you Sno-lizabeth."

Zemos bit his tongue as he mangled her name accidentally, compulsively. But he hoped she hadn't noticed.

Arc 721, 22 Vhalar

Having grown up within the academic world, Elisabeth didn't often consider why people wished to pursue specific subjects, understanding that the reasons were wide and varied. Her companion was a curious man, but she didn't know him well enough to make assumptions, nor did she want to. The offer of help remained because knowledge, in her mind, was a precious thing.

Zemos asked her about being a doctor, prompting the young woman to shake her head gently and explain. "Most of the medical knowledge I have is based on emergency medicine. How to stabilize someone until you can get proper medical help and that sort of thing. I'm the leader of a settlement on Faldrass. We don't have a healer in the settlement itself, so we often must assess illnesses and injuries ourselves and determine what needs to be dealt with by a healer in the other settlement." Getting someone with more medical knowledge than she in the settlement was on her never-ending list of things to do.

In Elisabeth's mind, being a settlement leader had forced her to become something of a jack-of-all-trades. She knew some about many different things – engineering, medicine, gardening, woodworking – but not enough to be considered an expert by any means. She understood the concepts and could apply them well enough, but research was needed for her to go further than that. It was what Haven required, and she was happy to provide, considering she learned quickly and could adapt what she knew to the settlement.

Elisabeth laughed softly upon hearing him call her 'Sno-lizabeth' for the second time. "I like that name. Alright, I'll check out these books and see if I can find anything."

Setting to work, Elisabeth put her notepad to the side. She dug into a book that mainly seemed to be a collection of obscure facts about certain Immortals and contained nothing that pointed her in the right direction. Knowing nothing of Lisirra, she needed a solid starting point and, as such, took her own advice and consulted the nearest librarian on where to find the best book to suit her needs.

Elisabeth was guided to a more restricted section of the library. The knowledge within wasn't restricted, but the librarians did escort people into the area to make sure they found what they needed. The older gentlemen guiding her smiled and grabbed two thick volumes off a reasonably high shelf. "Here, Miss Angelus. I believe these will help you in your research. Please turn them in to the front desk when you are done so we can see them home properly."

The pair returned to the main room swiftly, and she began to pour over the first book, titled "The Immortals." There were notes and information on almost all of the Immortals she knew of within the thick tome but listed a few she didn't recognize as well.

Time passed, but soon enough, using a bit of scanning instead of reading, Elisabeth came across mention of Lisirra. "Daughter of Cierel, Lisirra's known Domains are Pestilence, Toxin, Decay, and Insects. Her siblings include Famula, Moeske, Audrae and Sintra." Oh boy – those names she did know. Famula played a large part in her life as the Immortal was responsible for providing the ability to Jacien that had allowed her to be resurrected. Elisabeth had met Moeske at the outset of the Forging, and well, Audrae's fingerprints had been all over that event. Sintra was the one Elisabeth knew the least about, but she did remember that Woe was her son. Something about Webspinners; the topic had been touched on during the Forging.

Writing down those names and the relationships, she gently pushed over the piece of paper to Zemos, giving him a quick smile. "I found this. If you want me to research those other names, I can find a bit more."

There was an entry that stated something about rumors of Lisirra being involved in some way with affairs in Desnind. By her recollection, Desnind was associated with Moeske, so that particular mention seemed odd.

Leaving him with that information for the moment, Elisabeth continued. Remembering the second book, she noticed that it was a travel journal of one Magnusen Opplain, who appeared to have put all his notes about different cities and areas into a large volume. Curious that the librarian would know to pull this volume for her, Elisabeth didn't spend too much time theorizing, diving into the section on Desnind, the city being her only real clue.

Much of what she read did have to do with Moeske, aligning with what she knew, but Lisirra's name came up a few times. The author, Magnusen, mentioned rumors he heard as he passed through the area. He was insistent that he never confirmed or denied any of them, but they seemed to point to a falling out between Moeske and Lisirra.

As she read on, the man wrote of a few whispered conversations heard about a clandestine religion focused on Lisirra within Desnind, which Elisabeth found to be a bit cheeky considering they had done it under Moeske's nose.

The author had only been able to recover a few pieces of information regarding the religion, but what he had found was interesting enough to interrupt Zemos from his own research and draw attention to what she had found, scooting her chair over and showing him the passages in the book, explaining. "So, these are some travel notes of a man who heard interesting things when he visited Desnind. He heard whispers of an underground religion there called Serga Mavranu. There's no information on the religion itself other than its intent to honor Lisirra. It's somehow attached to a faction called The Cazav, but again, no further notes on that."

She fell silent, waiting for him to absorb what she had said and what was in the book in front of him, curious to know what he thought about it all.

22nd of Vhalar 721

Zemos furrowed her brow when she mentioned the need for research, and it having something to do with being a doctor. "Either you work with bodies, or you don't. There's no room for middleground. Medicine, instilling and relieving the effects of poison, cutting people to figure out what makes them work and do repairs, this makes you a doctor. Do you do any of that?" Zemos smiled, whatever her answer. "Then you are a doctor, or you are not."

But then, she began speaking of Lisirra more, her lineage, and her siblings. On the mention of Sintra, the Egg went absolutely berserk.

Betrayer and skulking skittering wretch!
The Bane of Rhakros.

"Bane of Rhakros..." Zemos muttered to himself, forgetting about the others, Audrae, Moseke, and Famula. Then a sudden pain lanced through his spine at the thought of spiders.

No father-brother, do not take our eyes there!
She can See us.

"She can See us." Zemos repeated, strangely compelled to repeat now what the Egg said.

Finally, they came to other subjects, of meanderings of a traveling scholar, cataloguing the cultural idiosyncrasies of a place called Desnind. He nodded along, until she mentioned the Cazav. "Oh!" He said, and repeated. "Oh!"

"Silence worm!
You will reveal Us!

Another lance of pain went through his spinal column, and he visibly suffered, leaning over the table in agony for a few moments. After those moments, however, he became suddenly elated. Visibly grinning from ear to ear at the Snow Woman.

"Thank you Snow Woman."

"Thank you Snow Woman." Zemos intoned, gathering up the book she'd taken. He gathered them up in his arms, and slipped them into a pocket in his coat.

"You have stirred the Scarab of Rhakros." The Egg intoned its peculiar nonsensical titles. But now Zemos repeated its words. Suddenly inspired by something going deeper, or perhaps compelled to obey its compulsions.

"You have stirred the Scarab of Rhakros." He muttered. Then he left the library, books in tow.

Overall

Overall an intriguing read. I doubled back over CS and Lore too keep up, but man once you start it becomes bottomless! Zemos and Elisabeth both live completely different lives and though their intentions are vastly misaligned that makes it more interesting when the interact.

Zemos

Zemos is defiantly an odd fellow, but nonetheless interesting! He comes off as odd, which I'm sure is what you were going for. Nailed it! From his mental struggle with the egg to his appearance and speech, Zemos is just weird. And I love it!

Elisabeth: She's such a helpful person. With her skills its no wonder she's well liked. I love how you display her thirst for knowledge as just that. Elisabeth finds no good and evil in knowledge, it simply is; way to go with describing that! I wonder what will happen if the knowledge she chooses to impart becomes something she didn't intend...
