  • Business Name: The Mageworks Guild
  • Business Location: Scalvoris
  • Business Description: The Mageworks Guild is an ensorcelling and alchemy laboratory and guild that aims to gain a complete monopoly on the man-made magical items market. In order to achieve this the guild carries out two main activities:
    1. Magical Item Creation - The Mageworks Guild employes a large number of miners, mercenaries and other gathers in order to harvest raw wells and alchemical reagents. Despite these being rather unskilled jobs, employees recieve relatively high pay in exchange for signing a contract that absolves the Mageworks Guild of liability for any injuries sustained during work, since most of the raw materials needed are only found in dangerous areas. The guild's ensorcellers and alchemists then use these reagents and wells to create and sell made-to-order magical items to wealthy customers. The customer specifies what they want ther item to do, and then the Mageworks Guild will work out how to make an item with the intended effect. Due to the dangers involved and the high production costs these items are incredibly expensive.
    2. Refined Well and Reagent Sales - There are a number of artisans who have picked up a few ensorcelling or alchemical tricks as a way to suplement their own craft, but are rarely willing to brave the dangers needed in order to obtain the materials needed to make use of this. The Mageworks Guild invites such artisans to become associate members of the guild. Associates are required to pay a small monthly fee, but in return are able to purchase refines wells and prepared reagents directly from the guild, and can undergo training courses. As the Mageworks Guilds handle the gathering and refinment process this is much less dangerous for associate members, though they are required to have the Mageworks Guild emblem engraved on the finished magical item and to have its quality inspected by a member of the guild before the sale.
    Due to the nature of the products sold by the Mageworks Guild, all requests for products should be done in-thread.

Hello there Cad!

I love the idea here, and I think this will be a great business. I have a couple of questions though.

1. Are you going to write up a location etc?
2. How're you going to deal with pricing things?
3. How are you going to sell this to the Merchants Guild / Council (people will ask questions) - after the Logging Consortium, Scalv is a bit cautious of monopolies.
4. As you are Expert in your Business Skill - you can only have up to Tier 8 Target Tier.
5. How are you going to manage this in terms of if someone comes in wanting something that Cad can't make? (I know, horrifying thought!)
6. You call it a "Guild" - are you planning on having a faction too? (a hundred employees makes my eye twitch a little bit....)

We'll get this finalised - and it will be fab!

1. I do intend to write up a location, but as I'm planning to have this location built and filled with deadly traps in an actual thread I figured it would be best to wait until said thread is done and reviewed first. This is just in case there are any issues with some of the traps I have planned to fill the location with that the reviewer believes might be outside Cad's skill level.

2. Each magical item the guild is commisioned to create will be individually priced depending on the effect it is intended to possess and the rarity of the matierials needed to make it. As such all would need to be made IC in a thread.

3. Cad will not reveal that he ultimately hopes to gain a complete monopoly on the magical items market. He will sell it as a way to provide useful magical items to Scalvoris, enforce safety and quality standards within the highly dangerous field of ensorcelling, and unite those with a passions for magical artisanry beneath one banner where they can share knowledge. Through this business Scalvoris might gain an edge over other nations into magical item research.

4. Apologies, missed that part. My proposal has been edited accordingly.

5. Give it a go, but if it's completely impossible admit defeat.

6. I would like to, but not immediately. It would need to establish itself as a business capable of creating high-quality magical items first, but once it has an starts getting other ensorcellers and alchemists to join it as associates I forsee it branching out into the territory of a faction as well.

I know 100 employees does seem a lot, and we can bring it down if that'll be an issue. These are mostly just unskilled miners, gathers and guards, and I looked at the average employees a mine would have had as a basis. There'll only be about 6 or so actual ensorcellers or alchemists, and they'll be written up as business NPCs.
