Totrial was a very special trial as far as Ari'sora was concerned. After a season of focusing on theory, she was finally going to get the chance to make something in her alchemy class totrial. She had experimented a little on her own, of course. But she hadn't wanted to take the chance of doing much on her own. Professor Thetys' warning about backlash had stuck with her, and she wanted very much to avoid that happening if at all possible.

She knew more now than she had when she had made the paperweight that felt cool to the touch with the professor's guidance, but that didn't mean that she wanted to take any unnecessary chances. At the same time, her mind was filled with all kinds of ideas about what they would make during their first practical class.

Ari'sora ate a quick breakfast, barely tasting the bread and cheese that she ate since her mind was already in the classroom. After cleaning up after herself, she helped to get her children up and prepared for their trial. Only when she was certain that Mi'zuri had things well in hand did she grab her supplies and head out.

It was already uncomfortably hot, but as early as it was, it wasn't as bad as it would get later in the trial. She could still move quickly without risking heat exhaustion. Especially when she was able to find a nice wind current that both boosted her speed without any extra effort on her part, and allowed her to glide for a good part of the way rather than expending the effort of constant flapping. Being high up in the sky helped as well, since it was cooler at the height she chose to fly at than it was on the ground. All in all, it was a pleasant flight.

Fortunately for her, last night had been one of her good nights. She hadn't had a nightmare, likely because she had been too exhausted to dream at all. So while she was far from fully rested, she didn't feel as exhausted as she would have after a nightmare plagued sleep. And her mind, while not as alert as it could have been, was not fogged from lack of sleep.

When she arrived at the University, she circled around until she could find a good landing spot. Once she was on the ground, she took a few trills to straighten herself out and brush off the dust that had blown up during her landing. Then she went inside.

Ari'sora was one of the first students to arrive. She liked getting there early because that gave her the time she needed to fix herself up from her flight to the University if necessary, which it usually was as the wind often made a mess out of her hair as she flew. It also gave her the time to get settled, and to look over her notes; both the ones that Professor Thetys had given her, and the ones she had taken in other classes.

Once Ari'sora had found an empty seat in the front of the classroom, she took out some paper, a pen, and the notes that Professor Thetys had given her. A couple of the other early arrivals started a debate about reagents that quickly turned into an argument. Ari'sora listened to it for a few trills, but most of it was well over her head since it involved reagents she had never even heard of. Fortunately, the argument didn't last long because a third student told them that they were both wrong, and that a completely different reagent was the best one to use for the alchemical experiment that they were talking about, and offered them "proof" that was equally incomprehensible to Ari'sora. When quiet descended on the classroom once more, Ari'sora began to read.

Those who are new to alchemy should only work with reagents that occur naturally such as plants, metals or reagents that are derived from animals.

Ari'sora smiled to herself as she remembered what her reaction had been to that statement. She had immediately asked about reagents that did not occur naturally, and what such things might be. The answer had surprised her. It had also made her that much more determined to follow Professor Thetys' advice on the matter.

Those who are new to alchemy should focus on mediums such as stone, wood or cloth. Potions in particular, and liquids in general should be avoided until one has more knoweldge and skill in alchemy.

That seemed like more good advice, and as such, Ari'sora had every intention of following it. It helped that things like wood, stone, and some kinds of cloth were easily obtainable, and in many cases were not expensive. Although inexpensive could also mean low quality in some cases, and that could also be problematic in some ways.

Ari'sora skimmed through the notes again as more students showed up, and took their seats. By then, the only one who was missing was their teacher. She had just enough time to read that Swiftweb was a metabolizer that could increase the potency of a alchemical compound and strengthen its effect before he arrived as well. Professor Freid took a few bits to rummage through his papers before he turned to address the class.

The first thing we are going to do totrial is learn how to make litmus paper. Litmus paper can be used in order to figure out if liquids are acidic or basic."

The professor stopped speaking and frowned.

"I think I might have told you this before. Have I?"

Ari'sora and the other students nodded. Professor Freid cleared his throat uncomfortably before continuing.

"Yes...well...that's what it does. You use it by dipping the paper in the substance that you are trying to test, and it will change color depending on whether it is acidic or basic. If it is an acid, it will turn red, and if it is a base, it will turn blue. Finally, if the litmus paper does not change color, the substance you are testing is neutral. Litmus paper is used often in chemistry, but it can be used in alchemy as well. It is also fairly simple to make. You will find copies of the recipe on how to make it on my desk, and the supplies you will need to make it are on the table in the back of the room. Please begin."

Ari'sora was among the first to approach the professor's desk, and get a copy of the recipe that would tell her how to make the litmus paper she needed to make. Before she headed to the back of the room to get the supplies she would need, she took a few trills to read through the recipe so she would know what, exactly, she needed to get.

The recipe called for blotting paper that had been cut into strips, two cups of chopped red cabbage, some lemon juice, some vinegar, and some soap. It was specified that the last three ingredients would be used to test the litmus paper they made. Once Ari'sora knew what she needed to get, she moved quickly to get everything that she needed. Then it was time to get to work.

The first step was to boil the red cabbage until the water it was boiling in was a reddish purple color from the cabbage. Once that had been done, the recipe called for her to strain the red cabbage from the solution. In order to save time, Ari'sora quickly set a pot of water on one of the stoves in the classroom so it would begin to boil. Then she chopped up her cabbage, and added it to the pot. By then, the water was boiling, so it was simply a matter of waiting until the water turned the right color. While she was waiting, she cut her blotting paper into strips. As she did so, she realized that she didn't know what blotting paper was, or why it was any different that normal paper...if it was. So she raised her hand, and waited for the professor to call on her.

"The recipe calls for blotting paper. What is that, exactly. Is it any different than normal paper?" she asked once she had been acknowledged.

"Blotting paper is a highly absorbent type of paper or other material. Rather than being made out of wood like normal paper is, it is made out of ingredients such as rice, cotton, and even flax seed. It is used to absorb an excess of liquid substances such as ink or oil from the surface of writing paper or other objects. And for our purposes, it is used to make litmus paper. Are there any more questions?"

The professor sounded bored, and Ari'sora was worried that she had annoyed him by asking him about the blotting paper, so she quickly shook her head, and got back to work. By the time she had finished cutting her blotting paper into strips, the water was a nice reddish purple color, so she strained the cabbage out of it. The next step called for her to put her blotting paper strips into the solution and leave them there to soak. It didn't say how long they were supposed to soak, though.

Ari'sora frowned. Knowing how long the blotting paper needed to soak for was rather important. But she didn't know if she should risk annoying their professor further by asking.
fortunately, another student asked about it before she could decide whether to ask or not. Professor Freid frowned at him for several trills before he picked up one of the copies of the recipe and glanced it over. Then he sighed.

"I'll tell you when to take it out." he said at last.

With that, he went back to the paper he had been reading. Ari'sora hoped that he didn't forget like he had forgotten other things in the past. But after a while, he did tell them to remove the paper, and Ari'sora was quick to do just that. According to the recipe, the final step was to allow the newly made litmus paper to dry. Once it had, it would be ready to use.

"Class is almost over, so it looks like we won't be able to use the litmus paper you've made to test the three substances we were supposed to. You can do that on your own time once your litmus paper is dry as part of your homework. With that, Professor Fried gave them the rest of their assignment; some reading, and to make some more litmus paper and to use it to test twenty substances of their choice and write a paper about the results. Then he dismissed the class and left them to their own devices.

Notes:
This was a wonderfully written skill thread! I enjoyed the slice-of-life view I got of Ari and something of a normal trial for her.

Classroom threads can be difficult to write and make interesting but you did a great job doing that. I was interested in what you were writing about and learned a little something too!

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding this review, feel free to PM. Enjoy your rewards!
