[Scalvoris] Development and Requests Thread

Original Submission: Fauna: Constellion
Constellion
Image
Developed by Amaris
Price: Pelt -- 2 on
Habitat: Scaltoth Jungle

Lifespan and Development: Constellions are not much larger than regular lions. The only distinguishing features are the pale colorings of both their pelt and hair, as well as the faint constellation like markings on them. These markings do not appear until maturity, which is achieved after two arcs. The species is said to live anywhere from 15 to 45 arcs. As pack animals, they maintain the same family dynamics as their brother species of lions. Each group is headed by an alpha male that will chase off all competing males, or if defeated will leave the pack and search for a new one.

Constellions maintain the same mating pair for all of their life, and are said to reproduce once every five arcs. Their young remain with them, mostly the females, until they reach maturity and find their place in the pack dynamics. Male offspring are left on the fringes until their first challenge for dominance. Should they lose, they are promptly chased off and left to find another pack to integrate themselves into. These challenges are most often done in Ymiden or Saun, and can take up to 10 arcs before the first attempt is made.

Upon death, Constellions are said to produce a soft glow until their body fully decays. Afterwards, the imprint of their markings are noted to be left behind in the ground, glowing every night as a beacon for several cycles. The pack will remain around the spot until it fades and move on to another territory if the deceased were the patriarch or matriarch.

Diet: Carnivores

Temperament: Despite solemn appearances, Constellions are playful and sociable. They, however, are not gentle and as such are considered dangerous. They would not hesitate to treat a stray explorer as a chew toy, though it would seem more like friendly play to them. Serious threats are treated with equal amounts of hostility. Should one of their pack be downed, the surviving members will go as far as hunting down the perpetrator outside the reaches of the Scaltoth Jungles.

Abilities: Constellions glow at night, reflecting constellations into the night. This is used as beacon to direct members of the pack to them, but is also a beautiful sight.

[Scalvoris] Development and Requests Thread

Original Submission: Fauna: Flunny
Flunny
Image
Developed by Amaris
Price: 45 gn
Habitat: Immortals' Tongue

Lifespan and Development: Flunnies are, plainly speaking, flying bunnies. They appear to be no different from other rabbits, other than the fact that their ears also function as wings. Feathers line the outer ear, large and strong enough to carry the creatures, which tend to be no more than five pounds, into the air. Several more feathers line their legs to aid in flight. They tend to be brightly colored, making them quite easy to spot.

Their development for most of their bodies follows the same patterns as regular rabbits. They are capable of flight around 100 trials, though they will prefer land until they 250 to 300 trials old. At this point, they may easily leave the mating pair they were born to. Some Flunny have been known to migrate back to their parents every two arcs, or at least once in the 7 arcs they are known to live.

Diet: Plants and some insects

Temperament: Playful, finicky. Good luck catching one without enjoying yourself.

Original Submission: Location: Cally's
Image
Image
An exclusive restaurant nestled in the middle of Scalvoris Town, Cally's is considered to be the best in food that the entire island has to offer. The cuisine is sourced from the farmholding outside the town which is part of the business. Only the finest fresh, home grown produce are selected and they are used in dishes which are created and prepared by someone at the very pinnacle of their skills.

The atmosphere in Cally's is one of quiet comfort. Whilst the food is beyond exquisite, the decor is unpretentious and the seating comfortable. Crisp white linens and crockery are offset by the shining cutlery and glassware. The serving staff are quick and unobtrusive, seeking to make sure that the customers' needs are met before they know they have them.

It is well known in Scalvoris that Cally's is part of a wider business run by Faith, the chef and owner, which provides education and funds a number of charitable endeavors. The produce are grown as part of this business, helping to teach people how to grow their own food and the kitchen is a place which teaches how to cook. A large margin of the profits from the business go to charities and, as Cally's expands, it aims to provide a continued service to the island of Scalvoris.

Up to Date!
All completed submissions have been approved! Thank you so much for supporting the development of Scalvoris. Those of you who have had development pieces approved, don't forget to claim your point bank points if you take part in that system!

If you have put up an incomplete submission, could you please drop me a pm and let me know when you've edited it to completion? Otherwise your submission risks getting not seen. Might be worth putting incomplete submissions in plot notes threads until ready, so that you don't risk your work being lost in the mass of posts!

Thanks again!

Heyyo!
So, I wasn't sure where to post this, but this is in regards to the new Zoology field of study. I think it would be best to categorize it as a mixture of studies since zoology in itself is the scientific study of the behavior, structure, physiology, classification, and distribution of animals. Animal Husbandry, as defined in the skill section, is the mental and physical care of animals, specifically farm animals, pets, and mounts.

So, wouldn't it require something like combined studies, or skills that kinda work into the field?

Hi Amaris!

Yes, I think you're right! However, think about medicine, for example, which Faith is studying. That's two skills - it's Medicine and it's Surgery. I would think zoology might be animal husbandry, psychology (comparative psych) and maybe medicine. But we have examples of people teaching subjects which don't link to specific skills "exactly" so what we do is link them to "a" skill which we sort of "hang" it on in terms of the knowledge requirements. What skill would you like to see? Drop me a pm and we can talk it through - or the other thing is to pm Maltruism and ask about it being a new skill? What would be your preference? PM me and we can maybe work on some write ups for "academic study of = "?

Original Submission Worlds End Festival
The Worlds End Festival
Image
Traditionally this takes place on the Northernmost tip of the island, just outside of Almund on the red sands of the coastal beach. Around the dunes leading down to the beach are smatterings of ruined wooden buildings, sun bleached bone white and broken down with time. On the night of the festival, merchants and vendors set up their stalls along the dunes, using the ruins as structures to set up tents and covers to protect their wares from the inevitable rains that come from the first storm of Ashan. The sky is often starless, with thick black clouds and rumbling of thunder accenting the nighttime activities. Occasionally, over the dark waters beyond the beach a streak of lighting with light up the sky, causing people to gasp or cheer with delight. Hung on the various stalls, ruins and stark bony trees are various coloured strings of lanterns sending a calm glow onto the rust coloured sand beneath.

Past the stall lines, the beach opens up to various seating and tables, protected by open sided pavilions of canvas and lit with lanterns and free standing torches. Festival goers are welcome to sit and enjoy their food and drink at these tables, and often can be quite busy at the start of the evening before the rains begin. On sale are various different types of food and drink, ranging from little fried things on skewers to big bowls of beautifully balanced and flavoursome curries. The smells and tastes are a decadent assault on the senses and no one goes hungry on festival. Beverages on sale range from mild fruity fermentations to rich thick meads, and everything in between. Often there are wineskins and barrels of ale sitting on the tables, free for all to enjoy. For the adventurous, a common festival tradition is to down a shot of 'Worlds End', a brightly coloured concoction of various spirits and liquors that mirror the stormy night skies above. It's highly recommended to stick to only one of these unique drinks, given the potency most people claim to feel the affects happen within minutes and last till morning. Nearer to the water, there is a huge bonfire that burns from dusk till dawn, surrounded by various musicians - impromptu or hired. It is a vibrant and intoxicating atmosphere, filled with a sense of community and friendship. Sometimes, further down the beach there are festival games set up and a little gambling. For those of a more discerning taste, at the darker end of the beach, furthest from the bonfire one may find a shady vendor selling things more psychoactive than just your regular alcoholic drinks.

There is much dancing and celebration this night, and it is said that those who wed in the World's End Festival will have a life filled with luck. The first storm of Ashan happens during this festival ~ a sign that the Immortals are watching and party goers dance in the rain, their hearts and tummies brimming. It's a beautiful celebration of life and change, and anyone who can attend does. Most festival attendees will walk away from the event with fond memories, new friends and lifelong stories to share on cold winter nights.

Original Submission Sweetwine Woods
Sweetwine Woods
Image
One days travel on foot or mount from Scalvoris Town, Sweetwine Wood is aptly named for the abundance of Sweetwine Vines that are scattered throughout. Tall trees thickly cover the area, canopies overlapping to form a rich coverage of foliage once you move past the outskirts. The sum of light that breaks through this canopy allows a generous variety of other plants to prosper. These includes mosses, ferns and lichens, as well as small flowering herbs, grasses and shrubs. Not to mention the uncannily overpopulation of Sweetwine Vine. Due to the variance in different kinds of plants, there is a larger range of animal diversity than found on the grasslands. This ranges from gentle herbivores, to the not so gentle carnivores which feed on them. Copious amounts of rotting wood and decaying leaf litter offer a vibrant ecosystem for bugs and other invertebrates, not to mention fungi.

Settled on the mouth of the eastern river, the woods span both banks and spread out till they become more sparse and finally loose out to the grasslands and lumberjacks. Upon entering the woods, it is deceptively quiet and calm, only broken by the occasional rustle of creatures in the undergrowth or in some cases the scream of some herbivore being taken down by one of the varied carnivores. There are natural tracks through the trees, made by animals on their way to the waters edge and back again to whatever home it is they've made in the woods.

In the warmer seasons, the woods are a vibrant mix of greens, thick and overgrown at times due to the availability of an ongoing water source, and flamboyantly dressed with the beautiful multicolored flowers that peek their heads to find the sun. As the cooler seasons come to play, the trees turn to a beautiful array of reds and oranges, save for the evergreens spattered throughout. Eventually the cold fronts come and the red leaves fall, leaving bare branches reaching out like skeletal fingers reaching to the sky in a final dying cry. All these changes bring both different beauty and danger, given the range of animals that come out of hibernation or into migration.

The Sweetwine Woods are a commonly accessed area, both for hunting and gathering, due to the diverse ecosystem it houses. Some people murmur rumors of a family of Stagrein living in the vast depths of the wood, yet to date there has never been a true confirmed sighting (or even a half sighting story that wasn't accompanied by copious loads of alcohol and heard from a friend of a friend.)

Name: "Bear"
Race: Human
Age: 4th Vhalar, 680
Title: Woodsman
Skills: Woodchopping: 50, Tracking: 35
Other Information: No one really remembers Bear's real name, having used the moniker for so long even he calls himself that. A rather befitting name for the bald headed, beaded human. With a hairy barrel chest and arms like tree trunks, the woodsman makes a living chopping down trees in Sweetwine Woods for sale in the townships. He has an exceptional knowledge of the woods, and as such acts a guide when required. He only has one living next of kin, his daughter Talilah.

Name: Talilah
Race: Human
Age: 15th Ymiden, 707
Title: Scout
Skills: Running: 35, Scouting: 30
Other Information: A scrappy little thing in comparison to her father, Talilah is the only living relative of her father Bear. She has wild curly red hair, blue eyes and a face full of freckles. She loves to run and play in the woods, acting as a scout or messenger for her father and the campsites from time to time when he takes people into the wood. The young girl isn't afraid to tussle with the boys or get her hands dirty, and is a huge fan of her Dad. He is just the bee's knees to her. Where her mother is, Talilah couldn't say, and doesn't really care. Her father provides and cares for her and to the girl that is all that matters.

Original Submission: Food and Drink Mint Cocoa Dirt
Image
Mint Cocoa Dirt

Developed by Arwel Kyric
Type of Alcohol: Vodka
Appearance: This drink is made by taking vodka with mint leaves seeping in it, and mixing it with a dash of cocoa. As such it comes in varying shades of brown, or clear with a slight darkness to it if dirt is mixed in. It got it's name from the fact that bars that can’t afford or don’t have cocoa are rumored to just take some dirt and stir it in. No one really notices as most are too drunk at that point to care.
Taste: Tastes very strongly of straight vodka, with a slight mint aftertaste. Sometimes there’s a chocolate flavor that varies in strength, but if you have a really gritty flavor to your shot, then you can count on there being dirt stirred into the shot, which is why it’s usually so cheap to get.
Price: Per shot: 3sn a shot, less if dirt is used rather than cocoa
Alcohol Potency: Fairly potent, as the shot is almost entirely vodka. Take too many of these and you’ll be blackout drunk

Original Submission Food and Drink Infinite Lime Murder
Image
Infinite Lime Murder

Developed by Arwel Kyric
Type of Alcohol: Rum
Appearance: A dark rum is used for this drink, you take fresh lime juice and mix with a dash of sugar, then add rum and shake it together. It’s been called the ‘man’s daiquiri’ jokingly a few times, but really no one gets the mixture right for it and eventually it evolved into what it is now, a strong drink with no sugar(not that it really needed it before) that’s usually more lime than rum, at least in taste. People have died drinking themselves to death over it, thinking they were drinking less alcohol than they were. So it's not uncommon for the drink to be ‘to die for’
Taste: The drinks taste has evolved since it was first crafted, and now rather than a nice balance you usually get an overwhelming taste of lime. Most people get hammered not realizing how much rum is in each glass, and order more and more trying to get drunk off what they think is a small amount of rum.
Price: 5sn per glass
Alcohol Potency: It’s more potent than you’d think when you drink it, there’s more rum than you taste. You can die from overdrinking not thinking you are getting drunk until it's too late
