A Shot In The Dark

Victor initiates Balthazar into transmutation.

The untamed wilderness of Melrath is vast and encompasses frigid mountain ranges, glacial fields, deep alpine lakes, dark ancient forests as well as the expansive shoreline of the nation. Here creatures and spirits dwell together in the remote places of the world, far from the hustle and bustle of civilization.

Re: A Shot In The Dark

24 Saun 720
"I suppose you're right, and if you're curious, it never gets easier." Balthazar said as he shifted his weight on his feet and looked at his hands once more. Every time he was initiated into another magic, his perceptions of the world expanded in ways he could never have predicted. He was excited to see Raelia again and to speak with Nimue tomorrow about it. She never expressed the most interest in his magic but she'd humor him in return for a favor. "I don't know if I'd be able to cast a spell right now- at least not a new one." He didn't know how to describe what his other sparks felt like or his ether- but he could feel it. He could do something, but it was not a good idea. Victor proposed they meet the next trial for a tangible lesson and Balthazar nodded in agreement.

"I'd appreciate a lesson tomorrow if you have the time. I don't have many plans other than a little exploration and resource gathering." Both people who could keep him informed when he left and materials he could send back to Scalvoris to study in greater detail later. "I'd gladly push that back to spend a little more time practicing with you... just don't throw another ether bolt at me. I think that is becoming a habit." It was a strange feeling every time and while Balthazar didn't really think Victor would, he found humor in pointing it out before taking a few tentative steps towards the stone horse. His legs worked and while his muscles were sore, he didn't have any sort of limp.

"I do. I practiced with land, sea, and air mounts in Scalvoris while training to join the Elements." Balthazar set a hand on the stone horse when he reached it and his fingers drummed against the surface. Stone, yes, but it felt different. When Victor mentioned the Echo Scrolls, Balthazar's head perked up and he nodded to the Warlock. "I would be up for that. It'll be good to have an easy way to communicate, even just across Melrath." It would certainly be easier to organize training with the Echo Scrolls to communicate. Then Victor thanked him and Balthazar nodded in return. "Thank you for sharing this magic with me." But he didn't point out that he didn't realize it was getting colder. "I'm sure I'll think of something to ask along the way but I'm just going over what we've talked about already in my head. Processing." Balthazar replied when Victor offered to answer any other questions Balthazar had. The mage took a deep breath and hoisted himself up onto the stone horse to prepare for the return journey.

Visible Mutations/ Marks

Mutations
Defiance: Skin always glows faintly and he is warm to the touch. His is also the center of a field of static electricity so people get shocked touching him on occasion.
Rupturing: Orange etheric cracks spider-web up his arms to his elbows. His eyes and the glowing cracks going down his cheeks glow dark blue.
Transmutation: He has a series of emerald, glowing cracks on his right pectoral.
Marks
Bellinos: His fingernails are always black. The color fades into his fingers.
Celarion: A dim glowing ring surrounds his left forearm.
Palenon: A silver lightning shaped mark about the size of a hand stretching up towards his torso.

Scars

  • Oops, Oops, Ouch: Balthazar Black has twenty scars across his back from a lashing as well as scars on his hands and arms from jagged rocks on Faldrass. There are two scars on the sides of his abdomen from being stabbed and a slash across his back which blends in with the whip scars.

Overview
Initiations are always so fun to read, especially initiations between PCs. Balthazar nearly dying because his sparks are too damn stubborn is very #JustMageThings, and Victor panicking when he thought he'd killed Balth was sweet. I really like the dynamic these two have together, and how Ali's abandonment has changed the way Victor engages with his initiate. It's a nice little character touch. As always, contact me on discord or through PM if there are any issues, and I look forwards to reading more of these two together.
