[Oakleigh] Meeting the Oakleigh Venoras

ith the introductions done, there was a moment of silence between all of them. Tristan and Hart had quickly voiced their desire to learn more about Thet's language, something Sin appreciate more than they probably knew. The fact that the little sister hadn't so much as acknowledge the existence of the deaf man didn't surprise Sin in the slightest. When faced with people like her, Sin often wondered how certain people managed to be born in certain families. Between Hart and Tristan, Sin figured he'd found the most laid back and down to Idalos nobles he could find. In their sister, Sin had found the poster child of noble abuse in the world.

The six mercenaries watched the Venoras silently as they discussed a creature called Mistral and how it would cost lives to retrieve toothpaste from it. Atolini seemed to take great pleasure in putting them down during her speeches. He tried to keep up with the back and forth between the nobles so that Thetfretr could follow as well but he had to give up rather quickly. While capable of holding a conversation, Sin was nowhere near as skilled enough to interpret a live conversation between three people he didn't know about a subject he hadn't prepped for. He quickly signed an apology towards the young man, who signed his understanding back. Sin promised he'd tell him the rest later.

Sin focused back on the conversation just in time to hear Atolini's tirade on slaves being lower than animals and how much higher Hart stood above them. Somehow, Sin couldn't imagine the friendly young man standing above anyone. Then again, he was a noble by blood and face so who know what sort of a person lived behind the friendly face he shared with Tristan. He didn't know his men well enough to know how they'd react to the girl's words but he knew enough etiquette to know when not to turn his attention away from a woman. He just had to hope that between Aukey's experience and wisdom and Iemes' knightly training they'd be able to keep the other three in check.

The conversation turned back to more useful things as Tristan invited them into a sitting room. As expected, the room was far more lavish than anyone would ever need but when all three Venoras and all five of Sin's guards were in the room even the sitting room felt a little crowded. Tristan invited them in to sit but of the six of them, only Sintih took a seat. The rest of them spread out along the room so they were in view of the duke without crowding around the four of them. With every bit spent with the Duke, Sin's image of the man started to shape. That he enjoyed parties and enjoying himself had been clear from the many rumors. To see it affirmed by the wine and cake or cookies always in the presence of the Duke made Sin smile slightly. Sin was kind enough to accept a glass and toast with the Duke to an immortal who had only brought trouble in Sin's life so far.

Tristan explained why he'd taken Sin and company on while describing his situation to them at the same time. Between the RCA and the Alliance alone, Sin could understand the need for extra security. Having the locals want you out on top of that, Sin wondered why it had taken the Duke so long to get the security he needed. When he finished, Hart took over with some direct questions to the group of men gathered there. Sin looked from Hart to his team. He did his best not to linger to long on Aukey as he looked over them one by one. Magic was illegal in Rynmere and despite how the locals felt about it, the Eastern Settlements were still part of it. "Ser Hart, I'm sure you are well aware that magic is illegal in Rynmere." Sin spoke for the group, as was expected of him. "It wouldn't be good for the Duke's already difficult position if he knowingly hired mages in his employ, wouldn't it?" He left it at that. It was far from a real answer but it kept sides of the conversation safe from potential, literal, mage hunts.

"As for the immortals..." Sin turned back to his group, motioning for them to answer for themselves. Religion was not something Sin bothered much with. His men could pray to whomever they desired as long as they followed his orders when they were on duty. Gallien and Thetfretr both shook their heads. Iemes was less private about his religion. "I think Zanik's a good guy and he gets my prayers whenever I need his help." He winked in Atolini's direction as a testament to his devotion to the immortal of seduction. Sin groaned softly at the display and hoped neither of the Venoran men would take offense to it. Argun kept quiet as he simply stared at Sin. The Eídisi was smart enough to move on for now. Maybe one day the man would trust him enough to tell him.

Aukey was last and he looked from Tristan to Atolini and finally to Hart before speaking. "I met U'frek once. I didn't know it at the time but I figured it out later. I still don't know if he was there to meet me or if we simply traveled the same road but we spent a few trials together." Sin's eyes opened wide in surprise as he looked at the older mercenary. He'd actually walked next to an immortal? Impressive. Sin turned his attention back to the Venoras. "As you can see, nobody here works for an immortal. A few prayers here and there don't put the Duke's life at risk. I myself am not religious but if my house is burning down I'll ask Faldrun for any help he can give me and when the day comes that I'll breathe my last, I'll try and convince Vri to look the other way for a while."

Oh, and Aelig is my Father because I'm a Yludih... After having told, or rather shown, Saeri about his race, Sin had wondered how he felt about sharing his secret with others now. Seeing the three Venoras looking at him told him that he wasn't planning on sharing it any time soon. The fact that he prayed to Aelig was a secret on the same level as his true form. Perhaps one trial he would find himself blessed by the illusive immortal of illusion and he would have no choice but to openly proclaim his devotion. From what little he knew about immortal marks, Sin was sure his Father wouldn't give him such an obvious one.

[Oakleigh] Meeting the Oakleigh Venoras

Hart asked a couple of excellent questions, Tristan decided. His brother had mentioned magic and blessings, so he wondered if he should reveal that he had been blessed by an Immortal himself, but he decided to keep it a secret for now because he really liked being a little mysterious. He also wondered if Mistral had really taken Atolini’s toothpaste, and then he decided that it could very well be the case because Mistral was a very evil cat!

“I would appreciate it if one of you could help us track Mistral down since I haven’t seen him in a while – only if you have time to do so of course”, he said in a much more polite tone than his sister.

Tristan loved Atolini dearly, but calling Sintih’s men who were supposed to protect them “expendables” was not a good idea in his opinion. He wouldn’t criticize her in front of strangers though. He’d probably have a word with her later on, when they were alone.

He had not been happy about his sister’s statement regarding Sintih’s men, but a moment later, as she insisted that Hart was a noble in her eyes, he smiled at her again. Atolini was often thoughtless, and her attitude in regards to slavery was a little too stereotypical for his taste, but deep down she had a good heart, and she was probably his favourite relative right now, apart from Hart!

He didn’t mind at all that Iemes tried to flirt with her either; in fact he smiled at the man encouragingly. Maybe he’d play matchmaker even though he really shouldn’t encourage a relationship between a noble and a commoner, but try to find a husband among the merchant families in the Eastern Settlement for Atolini. They’d probably be less likely to try and kill him then.

“I worship Zanik as well”, he let Iemes know and smiled, and then he added, “He gave me his blessing.” even though he’d initially decided that he wanted to be all mysterious and keep his connection to the Immortal a secret because having a secret was fun. Iemes apparently worshipped Zanik though, so he wanted him to know that the Immortal of Seduction and Music was well liked in Oakleigh.

To Aukey he said, "Maybe we could exchange stories about our encounters with the Immortals sometimes."

He didn’t really know much about Faldrun on the other hand, and Vri hadn’t helped him when he had thought that Faith was dead, so he didn’t say anything to that, but just nodded.

And then Atolini suggested that Sintih’s men familiarize themselves with his art, and he practically beamed at her because he loved sowing off his sculptures. Besides, she was right!

“People have broken into my studio before. Besides, I often visit art galleries where my creations are being exhibited. It would be good if I had some protection then”, he said. He was of course completely unaware that Atolini might have hidden motives.

“My studio is just down the hallway”, he continued.

~~~
If Sintih and his men (and Atolini and Hart) decided to follow him into his studio, they would immediately find themselves facing the second best sculpture that Tristan had ever made (the best one had been stolen). It stood on a pedestal in the center of the room, surrounded by other finished and half-finished sculptures as well as a lot of art supplies.
Tristan had made a sculpture of the Sessfiend that had terrorized Rynmere (and that had secretly been his cousin Zvezdana) a few seasons before. It was a huge, two-headed hound that had a saddle and reins with golden tassels on and two half naked riders on its back. It had been exhibited in an art gallery in Andaris, but it was back in Oakleigh now.
Padraig, the terrible tutor that Faith had fallen in love with had called it an abomination and insulted it, but Tristan was incredibly proud of it, and he looked at the men as if he expected them to praise it.
OOC: If you don’t want to visit Tristan’s studio, ignore the part after the ‘~~~’.
[Oakleigh] Meeting the Oakleigh Venoras
"Speaking in Rakahi"
"Speaking in Common"
Former slaves, Atolini said, and Hart glanced over at the group then back to his half-sister, admittedly made uncomfortable by her remarks. "Atolini..." he said, not much of a warning in his voice; more like he was begging her to stop elevating him in such a manner.
And then for the second time Sintih called him ser, and finally Hart had to say something.
"Contrary to Atolini's statements, I'm not a Venora," he said frankly, not sure if what he was saying would make Atolini angry; he still hadn't figured her out, just yet. "My surname is Qy'ihadi; I'm a Venoran bastard, yes, but I didn't grow up with the family, and I haven't been recognized by any of them, save by these two," he said, nodding to Tristan and his sister. "Really, all I am is a half-Biqaj. I'm not someone of importance." Despite claiming a Biqaj heritage he didn't look it, with none of the traits that most Biqaj and half-Biqaj showed, like the silver blood and pointed ears. And yet he was still definitely one of the sea people; his accent and his mannerisms showed that. He had none of the refined grace of the nobility.
To Sintih and his men he continued, "You need not bother guarding me. I doubt I would be the subject of any sort of political aim by a rival house or by the people of Oakleigh, and the Alliance has not bothered to contact me since quite early this season." He paused then, glancing over the men, uncertain if they had known he had been targeted at all. After a brief hesitation he pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket, the last form of contact he'd had with the notorious group: a folded piece of paper with eyes drawn on it. A simple message, watching you, but that had been so long ago. Sometimes he thought they'd forgotten him. "I feel quite safe here in Oakleigh," he said firmly, "I just want Tristan and Ayla and Atolini to feel the same."
That said he stepped back slightly, as if to recuse himself.
He continued to pay attention to the rest of the conversation, and noticed when Sintih gave a generic answer to his first question, the one about magic.
Perhaps he had expected too much, to ask that these men trust Tristan with their secrets. If any of them were mages, they were likely only protecting themselves and their livelihoods by remaining silent. But while Sintih had a point about knowingly hiring mages, not properly screening these men was perhaps just as bad an offense, if not worse.
Conversation turned towards his second question, this one about the gods, and at least this time the men offered information more freely. The fire-headed one, Aukey, had spent time with U'frek, and Hart couldn't tell how he felt about that. As a Biqaj he loved U'frek, he had always wanted to meet the immortal as one wished to meet an idol, and yet U'frek had been the one to contact Quio back in Vhalar; he had taken the Yludih away from Andaris to fight in a bloody war.
Finally he said, "I would like to hear of your time with U'frek as well, if you don't mind sharing the story." But that would likely happen some other day.
The men had ignored the offered sweets and wine, save for Sintih, but Hart himself couldn't help but grab a tiny bite of cake as they proceeded out the door towards Tristan's studio. Like before, he lagged behind the main of the group.
The studio was as it always was, and when he stepped inside Hart looked around fondly. To him it was like being in a gallery, almost, but a gallery that lived, one that had been brought to life.
There was a partially-completed statue of a godly man that Hart didn't know, which Tristan must have been working on before coming out to meet the guards. When he looked upon the statue of the nameless man he felt a shiver, which was odd as he should have shivered looking upon the statue of the beast, instead. He remembered Jack, his little dog who had gone missing the last season, and how she had refused to come into the room because of the terrible visage of the great two-headed beast.
"It's quite something," he said, smiling at Tristan. He had seen the statue before and still it was strikingly beautiful, or rather, Tristan's sculpting was; the sculpture itself was more evocative, somehow demanding of attention. It had its own presence in the room, almost like a living thing. No wonder Jack had been frightened of it.
He waited until the rest of the men had time to ponder the statue before turning and asking, "Before we go on, is there anything you need us to do so that you all may do your jobs?" He could think of some things, like getting them keys to the house, schedules of daily activities (not that Hart much followed a schedule), and of course time to meet the staff and look through the manor.
And did they want to see their rooms and settle in? And what about their horses and their things? Had all of that been left outside, untended?
"Do you have any questions, concerns?" He knew it was not his job to ask these things, but he couldn't help asking anyways. It was who he was. "And do you need anything? A tour of the house, or time to rest from your travels?" They had been offered refreshments but had been too polite to take them; they could be hungry, thirsty, or need relief or time in a bed.
[Oakleigh] Meeting the Oakleigh Venoras
t did sound a little like a tantrum when Hart suddenly piped up, trying to establish his non-noble blood to the six men that would be guarding the duke and his family. Sin looked back at his companions to gauge their reaction and they were all either looking at the, now, half Venora or at each other before they all looked to Sin. What was he supposed to do about it? Sin turned back to Hart. It was difficult to decide what to do here. On one hand, the man was half Venora, half noble, potentially half like Atolini. On the other hand, the man seemed to put a lot of weight to the non-Venoran side of the equation that made up his race.
"Ser Qijadi,..." Biqaj and their difficult pronunciations. "...it matters not whether you are the brother of the duke or a half-Biqaj commoner. As long as you are a guest of the duke's estate and as long as we're employed by the duke and told to do so, keeping you safe is part of our job." In an attempt to lessen the potential blow to the man's... ego? Freedom? Autonomy? Sin tried to appease the man's Biqaj side. "Same as U'frek protects you on... ocean." His Rakahi accent was thick and his skill with the language was obviously of a basic nature. He hoped all that could be forgiven in light of the, sole, Biqaj blessing Sin knew in their language. Sin turned to face Atolini and switched back to common. "This goes for anyone staying at the estate." He quickly shifted from the woman to the duke to see if he'd overstepped.
As the conversation continued, it seemed that they might have a few more things in common than Sin had expected. Religion rarely cared about social status or wealth. People of all walks of life prayed to immortals of their choice. The things they represented were beyond material wealth or social rank and status. It mattered very little to the fire that was burning your house if you were a dirt poor low towner or the son of the king of Rynmere. In the same way, the immortals, usually, didn't care about those things either. At least, they weren't supposed to.
Iemes and the duke seemed to connect over their devotion of the immortal Zanik. Considering that Iemes had the most experience with court life and would spend the most time with Tristan, this was something Sin was glad for. Aukey and Hart had a similar connection over U'frek. It wasn't as clear what Hart's connection to the immortal was but he seemed interested in Aukey's story. Perhaps the older man could be assigned as a semi-permanent guard for the young Venora bastard. In the end, Sin would pull all of his assets to guard the duke if he had to choose between any of the man's family members or the man himself. Until that point, though, Aukey could be used to forge some bond with the half-Venora.
The conversation shifted to the duke's more artistic endeavors and the man seemed to beam with excitement at the thought of showing off. Sin couldn't help a small smile. Certain things didn't change even when season had passed. While it was more a request than an order, Sin stood up as the duke did and all six of his new guards followed him out the seating room into the hallway and deeper in the house. As mentioned, the walk to the studio was short. Sin had no idea as to the artistic appreciation of his companions. He was sure Iemes had some, just to impress the ladies with. The others, he had no clue.
When he stepped into the room, that hint of apprehension towards the duke's artistic skills wavered and disappeared. As he had been unable to enter the building during the duke's play and having only ever seen a single painting from the man, which he had made together with someone else, Sin had expected something much worse. Looking at the two headed beast with the riders on top of it, Sin, with what little artistic understanding he had, could quickly tell that this was made by someone with a lot of skill. While the subject of the sculpture was a horrible sight to behold, the sculpture itself was beautifully made, almost coming to life before him.
In order to prevent them from crowding the room, the other five enjoyed a good look of the sculptures in the room and stepped back out, waiting in the hallway. Sin remained to answer Hart's question and anything else the duke or his sister might add afterwards. "Not really. We only just arrived so we should settle in first, get used to the lay of the land, in a manner of speech. Over the course of the next ten or so trials you'll see us more frequently until we've found our rhythm in your household." He nodded to Hart in thanks for offering to help out. It wasn't the duty of the half Venora nor that of the duke himself to show them around the estate. That's what nobles had servants for was it not? Sin turned towards the duke. "Perhaps if you could have one of your servants show us to where we will be staying and where the stables are. Thetfretr will take care of our horses for now. Due to his experience, I think it best that I assign Iemes to you for now, ser, until the rest of us can get used to things here."
He waited a moment to see if the duke had anything to say or add to that before continuing. He looked from the Duke back to his two family members. "We will learn your schedules from the other servants and by being present. That said, for now I would appreciate it if you'd let me know ahead of time if you're planning on going anywhere so I can arrange a proper escort. While I can not stop you from leaving on your own, I feel it is well within my duties to officially protest you leaving on your own if I feel it to be unsafe. I would hope that you will let me do my job as I see necessary." Sin turned back towards the duke. "If you could arrange for me to meet with all of your current guards sometime later this trial, that would be much appreciated. I would also like to speak with you in private as well, whenever it suits you best." Sin ended his lengthy response with a short but polite bow in the general direction of the three Venoras.
[Oakleigh] Meeting the Oakleigh Venoras
“If that bothers you“, Tristan said as Hart talked about being a bastard. “I’ll talk to father and grandmother and persuade them to recognize you. I’m very good at that kind of stuff!” He flashed his brother a grin. He’d persuaded Ilaren to spend the night with him, and one of these trials he would persuade her to marry him, he was sure of it, so persuading Noah Venora to recognize his illegitimate son should be easy, right?
“Anyway, to me you are important”, he insisted. “You are my brother. You are the only brother that I have left after Teddy killed himself, and I care about you a great deal. And so does Ayla. She loves her uncle Hart!” He wasn’t sure what was the matter with him. Why couldn’t he see it? He had welcomed Hart into his home and shared everything with him. Was he depressed about Quio? Was he still worried about that stupid Alliance?
He had to do something about that!
~~~

“It is”, Tristan proudly agreed as Hart complimented his statue. “The monster is called a Sessfiend. I didn’t know its proper name when I made the statue.” Sintih seemed to like the statue as well, judging by the look on his face, Tristan was observed. It made him appreciate the Eidisi even more. Unlike Padraig he knew a masterpiece when he saw it!

Hart was really good at asking the right questions. Maybe he’d give him some sort of official job sometimes, Tristan decided. For now he listened to Sintih’s answers though. “I’ll ask Brandon to show you to your rooms”, he told the Eidisi. Brandon was one of his guards and also an old friend of his. They’d played cards together, back before he had become a duke. Brandon had also claimed that he’d been a burglar once, but Tristan didn’t mind.

“I probably won’t go anywhere this season as I want to get to know Oakleigh and its people better”, he informed Sintih. He’d matured a little during the previous couple of seasons, so he didn’t protest when the Edisi warned him against going somewhere alone. Instead he came to the conclusion that it would be nice to have some company. Maybe he’d even buy Sintih’s men drinks when they went somewhere together!

“But I’ll have to attend a couple of important events in Andaris next season, the royal wedding, the wedding of Celeste Andaris and Xander Krome and that trial.” His face darkened momentarily. Alistair had accused his parents of abuse and a number of other despicable crimes. He’d seen the signs, so he had no problem with them going to prison, but he couldn’t help but worry about what would happen to House Venora afterwards.

“I’ll let them know”, he replied as Sintih asked to meet his current guards. “It’s probably a good idea if you get to know each other so that you can coordinate with each other. As for speaking with me in private …” He was about to tell him that he didn’t keep any secrets from his siblings, but then he nodded curtly. “Of course. Maybe we can meet this evening or tomorrow, whatever you prefer. I won’t be going anywhere!”

[Oakleigh] Meeting the Oakleigh Venoras

"Speaking in Rakahi"
"Speaking in Common"
From the men's reactions to Tristan's, it seemed he had misspoken. Hart had always been better with his hands than he was with words; that was why he was an artist. When he had spoken up, he had merely meant to refute the things Atolini had been saying, not... not make it seem that he didn't value his relationship to the Venoras.

He loved Tristan and Ayla, and though he didn't know much about Atolini as of yet, he loved her too. Being around them all was the best thing in his life right now.

"Sorry," he said, ducking his head first towards the Duke, then his hired men. "I may have worded that a bit too strongly." He inclined his head further at the words in Rakahi Sintih had given. Then, looking to Tristan, "I don't need to be recognized, I'm lucky enough to have you."

The words about Teddy, Tristan's brother who Hart had never met, gave him further pause. Where was his empathy? He had to rethink this whole thing. Tristan wanted to protect him because to him, Hart was important... and because Tristan had already lost a brother, and didn't want to lose one again.

In a way they wanted the same things: for the other to be safe.

"I admit I wouldn't mind meeting some more of the family," Hart said. He had wanted to meet Teddy. Just as Tristan had said, a long time back, that he would have liked to meet Jovy, Hart's sister who had died. "I would one day like to meet our father," he clarified aloud. "But I don't mind being who I am." After all, he had always been someone's bastard; until last summer, he just hadn't known whose. He gave a short smile then, though it was mostly in his eyes. "I think it rather suits me."

Smiling more fully at Sintih, he added, "I'm sorry if I made a fuss. Of course I'll let you do your job."

Still...

Ser Qy'ihadi, he thought, and sighed. He decided getting them to call him Hart would be the work of another day.

---

The topic of conversation moved on, from the statue of the Sessfiend, as Tristan had called it, to matters of the more practical sort. They began to discuss what Tristan would be up to this season and next, and though Hart couldn't help but want to go to a royal wedding --he loved parties-- he didn't bring it up. He would likely end up tagging along.

The trial Tristan mentioned, on the other hand, was not something Hart would likely be going to. He could tell from the expression on Tristan's face that whatever it was, it wasn't good.

It seemed Tristan had a lot of pressures of late, and it wasn't lost on Hart that he himself had added to that burden. Tristan had to deal with so much: the immortals, raising his daughter, Faith's death, his new political office, and whatever that trial was... and Hart had brought the Alliance to him, as well.

Perhaps part of why Hart had resisted having his own guard so earnestly was because he thought that Tristan had already given him enough.

"If you want to discuss those things together now, that's fine with me," he offered then, and grinned to let them know it was okay, he could be excused. "I can go get more cake."

Your review is ready!
So much great interaction in this thread, and everyone writes fabulous NPCs and dialogue. Maybe an accident might solve the problem? Such a bodyguard, Sinith! Hart is both compassionate and somewhat feral, Atolini dutifully fulfills her role as little sister. Tristan getting back into his art ... and Sinith trying to keep everyone organized! Haha. I enjoyed it.
