"Oh I imagine I would enjoy you reading to me but I don't want to inconvenience you." Balthazar replied about Yeva's offer to read to him. He thought it might be nice to spend a little time listening to Yeva read to him but he wasn't sure his spark would let him sit still long enough. Was he to take notes? He could co that either without walking around. But still, it might be nice. But he couldn't commit after the number of drinks he'd had. "Besides if you're reading to me all the time, when will you ever be able to bake?" Balthazar smiled and took a small sip from his cup before setting it back down. He laughed to himself as a funny thought crossed his mind. "Maybe we could do both?"

But he moved on, raising his glass as Yeva said Cheers!. "All the most interesting people in my life have been bad influences." Balthazar commented as he took another drink with Yeva. He was about three fourths done. Still trying to go slow for the healer but also getting a little distracted by how much he was enjoying drinking. When Yeva asked for a hint, Balthazar smiled deviously. He was in no condition to think of a subtle hint. He'd been drinking since before Yeva arrived... but he wanted to give her a hint. He chuckled to himself a little and then said, "I'll show you something you probably never saw in any of your books about healing."

And with that, he took another sip. Once he was done, Balthazar looked at his half-empty cup and set it on the counter. "You're falling behind." Balthazar pointed out before waving for the bartender. "Pour her next one in another cup and refill mine." Balthazar tossed a few nels the bartender's way and the man did as the mage said... even though he seemed a little irked by the way Balthazar said it. "That should buy you a little more time and I get to drink a little more." Balthazar lifted his refilled drink in another silent cheers and took a sip before setting it down. "What? Bad guy, remember?"

"You'd want to bake?" This seemed to amuse Yeva greatly and her laughter played like summer bells, freckled nose wrinkling in amusement. Balthazar was a man she had seen rough up prospective criminals with threats of decapitation. To picture him in an apron and oven mitts was nearly too much, "I guess we could," she repressed her dying giggles, with a hand to cover her mouth, "You'll have to tell me what you'd like for dessert."

She wondered if he'd like a cobbler.

Yeva had not yet made a recipe with fresh fruit, and thought it might be fun. And speaking of fun, Balthazar was determined not to shy away from his own enjoyments. He teased her with talk of morally questionable influences, and ominous promise, "We'll see," she eyed him, brow arched, "I've read a lot of books, you know."

It was partially a bluff and also a challenge in hopes the wicked mage might elaborate further in his intoxicated state. Yeva's curiosity begged for answers, leaving the young woman to imagine what tricks he might have up his sleeve. A bit more elemental manipulation? More thunderous portals into the unknown? Something else?

"You're falling behind."

She replied at once, blinking at the sound of a rumbling observation, "No I'm not-"

Her glass was empty, how was she...?

Balthazar ordered another round of drinks and her shoulders dropped. Uh-oh. If he drank too much, wouldn't performing magic be dangerous? Searching, she watched a new glass being poured for her, and Balthazar's topped off, "I didn't need any more time," she countered, brown eyes watching him take a sip and set his drink down. She frowned, flickering her attention to his cheating drink.

"What? Bad guy, remember?"

"Bad guy..." she muttered, remembering the investigation that had proven the statement, "You're not the only one," Yeva grabbed her drink and pointed to the western wall, where a collection of tables sat, "See that man over there?"

The redhead swallowed, looking past Balthazar's shoulder. Then, when his head began to turn, she swiped his drink, jumping like a scared cat and launching herself a few feet away, surprised by even her own actions. For a second, Yeva stared at Balthazar in shocked surprise and then, knowing her time frame was very, very limited, began to chug both drinks greedily until they were drained, the mixed liquor sloshing in her stomach to end her thievery in a whimper.

Oh, gods, she was gonna be sick. Yeva gasped loudly at the end of her gulping and began to flail her hands until the heat moved from her core and out of her fingertips. Was he upset? Once she felt she wouldn't puke, Yeva sheepishly met the Element's gaze, smile both coy and mischievous, "I win," she inhaled through her nose, her whole body alit. Already, she was feeling a sense of lightheadedness; "Please don't be mad - I was excited," Yeva's held her hands up, and realizing she still held the glasses, sat them along the bar and shuffled to grab her coat. Did she just steal from law enforcement? "I'll make it up later."

"Would you believe me if I said I didn't know anything about baking? Or cooking? I made a steak with magic once but it wasn't great." Balthazar said to Yeva when she said he'd have to tell her what dessert he wanted. "I know people make sweet bread but not much else so it would probably be better for you to pick." He conceded. In terms of dessert craftsmanship, Balthazar was probably far outclassed by Yeva. He didn't say anything about the magic trick he was going to show her because even drunk as a skunk, Balthazar knew how to keep his secret... well the real secrets. The things he didn't want someone to know until it was time. He often let a lot of smaller secrets escape though... so he was no iron fortress of secrecy with a few drinks in his system.

Yeva protested that she didn't need more time and Balthazar shrugged, content to play the bad guy so long as it meant the two of them could keep drinking. Then something unexpected happened. In all the places he'd been and would go, Balthazar never would have expected someone like Yeva to outfox him so quickly. Balthazar turned his head and body completely to look in the direction Yeva had pointed and what happened next, happened too quickly for the drunk to stop.

She was quick. Not quicker than Balthazar and not sly enough to go unnoticed, but quick all the same. If his Attunement spark hadn't warned him that her hand was moving for his drink, his Rupture spark would have. She was too close for him not to instinctively feel the movement... but he had never thought Yeva would be so bold as to steal his drink and down both it and her own in mere seconds. Balthazar turned back to look at her with shock and surprise... and delight. He hadn't been expecting that from Yeva and the turnaround was... amusing. She'd feel that in fifteen bits...

It was the jumping like a scared cat that prompted the loud laughter out of Balthazar and it was that loud laughter which seemed to draw the attention of everyone else in the bar. Balthazar rose on wobbly feet and crossed to the deeply apologetic Yeva. "You better, that was a full drink." Balthazar said in a falsely stern voice. He wasn't mad, the laughter had proven that, but he wasn't going to pass up the chance to hold it over Yeva. "But you did win, so come on. I'll show you a magic trick." Balthazar said as he lead the two of them out of the bar.

He felt less confident in his demonstration when he stepped outside and continued to feel a little wobble in his legs. Every time he turned his head the world seemed to spin just a little bit more than it should have but fortunately the sun had begun to set and torches were being lit all over Scalvoris to provide a little walking light for the few evening breaks that people would still be out and about. Balthazar went to the torch being used to shine light on the bar's hanging sign and Yeva would be able to notice the fire reaching out towards him instinctively. Flames always reached towards Balthazar. They loved him.

Balthazar knelt down and picked up a rock which he began running his fingers along the edge of. With each pass of his fingers he shaved off a little more of the rock's edge, making it sharper and sharper with each go. He didn't have a knife on him that he could remember so he was going to make one for the demonstration. "This is not the trick, I just need something sharp." He knew that what he was about to do was going to hurt a lot and was hoping that the sobriety brought by pain would let him do the second part, the actual trick, without messing up. He liked his hands. "Were you born in Rharne or did you just grow up there?" Balthazar asked as he sharped his rock. It was going to take a few more trills and silence was no good drunk.

Re: Hey! Remember the Baby Snatcher?

26 Ashan 720

The suspense at facing Balthazar's wrath was short lived, dissipated by the roaring laughter that drew the eyes of the evening crowd. Yeva ducked her head, shrinking back when he slid from his stool, but his eyes danced in amusement despite the gruffness of his voice, "Yes," she admitted, pressing her knuckles to her cheek in consideration. A full glass, "Strong, too."

The medic wondered how well thought out her plan really was, managing a smirk when he acquiesced to her win. It was not often the petite scholar was announced the victor of a drinking contest, particularly when in company of hearty men. Now for her magic trick! Yeva bounded after the Element, stopping halfway to the door before turning on her heel and rushing to lay a few more coins out for the bartender, appreciative of his patience, not just with Balthazar, but with both of them. If she was still around when the newly consumed liquor took hold of her body, she hoped the server would extend a little forgiveness.

Yeva rushed back to the mage's side just as they dipped past the door; She surely didn't want to miss any of the demonstration she had bent her morals for, "I hope I'm still considered a good influence," she commented amiably, hand extending out of habit when he seemed a bit unsteady. It wouldn't be long and she'd be in a similar boat, "Despite... you know, stealing your drink." Her breath quickened from the chill of the streets, and she hurried to shuffle on her cloak, fingers stiff.

It was getting darker now, the evening bleeding into night as city lanterns and torches were being lit. Yeve peered up at movement that caught her eye, a flickering flame that seemed to stretch outward like a needy embrace, unnatural but ever interesting. She stared in perplexity, watching the red heat reach for him and sway when Balthazar bent over to swipe up on old stone and run his finger along its surface. Petite, she rose on her tiptoes to wave her hand as close as she could to the light, but it showed no interest.

'He knows fire', Yeva smiled, still in awe, 'Or fire knows him.'

He couldn't have been an Aukari in disguise, could he?

Yeva finally closed the distance, peering over his shoulder, "Balthazar..."

She noticed the rock sharpening and the sound it made when he pressed his skin to it, "What are you doing?"

"This is not the trick," he informed, focused, "I just need something sharp."

Yeva waited, observant. The lamplight cast a warm and orange glow, but when it licked the sharp angles of his face and bright eyes, she could see how he could fit the role of villainy if that was the path he chose. There was a scratching at the back of her mind, a warning, but as the liquor set in, her interest grew and she rocked impatiently from toe to heel, humming a drinking song under her breath.

"Were you born in Rharne or did you just grow up there?"

"Yes," Yeva grinned, "I was born in Rharnian territory... on a orchard. We moved into the city when I was about five or so, and I grew up there. Left last arc..." she grew quiet, pensive as she recalled the faces of family and friends. She took a deep breath and looked around, "I was in Athart for a spell... Now I'm here."

Instead of returning the question right away, Yeva yearned to see what he was working on and reached for his hands, "Can I see?"

Umber curls spilled downward as she leaned over his work, gently prying the rock away to turn it over in her own palm. What would he need a sharp object for? Yeva noticed the point that had begun to form - like an arrow head - And all from his hands? She took Balthazar's palm next, gasping at the forgotten electric shock, but remained undeterred. The redhead turned his palm upwards, and scrubbed her thumb across his fingers to test their texture, "Okay," she finally whispered, satisfied in her examination to allow him to continue. Yeva let go, tucking the stone back into his possession and beamed, clasping her hands together, "I still can't figure out what you're planning."

Yeva spun, her cares dropping from her shoulders like weights. Humming, the alcohol made her feel warm, relaxed, "What about you?" she asked, pausing to play with her own shadow, a little bunny formed from her hands that made her chuckle softly until she peered over her shoulder with chocolate eyes, "Where are you from, magic man?"

Re: Hey! Remember the Baby Snatcher?

26 Ashan 720
"A good influence?" Balthazar repeated when Yeva said she hoped she would still be considered one despite her theft. "Of course you are. Though maybe don't tell the children you stole someone's drink at a bar. I think it makes you interesting but some- not me- might call that a bad influence." Balthazar said with a small laugh. He noticed the chill seem to settle over Yeva and couldn't help but a think a few bits from now it would pass. All the same there was an impulse to help. Balthazar, likely the warmest person in Scalvoris (some could argue he could be described as the hottest human), thought about stepping a little closer to Yeva. He always felt warmed drunk and he was normally pretty warm to begin with... so when he was drunk he must have been like a bonfire? At least that was what he thought. Fortunately Yeva stepped closer to him after playing with a little fire and so Balthazar didn't have to make a decision.

He kept working at the rock in his hands while he listened to Yeva. On an orchard? That must have been nice. He wondered what types of things grew in her orchard... but she'd moved to the city at a young enough age apparently that Balthazar wasn't sure if she would remember. By Yeva's account, she hadn't been traveling long. He was going to ask another question, something about Ahart, but he felt Yeva moving towards his hands and it distracted him for the trill before she asked if she could see what he was doing. "Sharpening a rock." Balthazar said as he offered it to her.

Balthazar couldn't help but grin at the expression on Yeva's face as she began looking over the sharpened rock. Then she took his hand to examine it and the smallest breath escaped the amused mage when Yeva reacted to the shock. He was thinking thoughts he ought not to be thinking now and tried to shake them from his head but it made him wobble. "Did you think I'd have stone fingers?" Balthazar asked Yeva once she was done looking at his hand. "It's alright, I was worried that might be a mutation as well."

Where was he from? Balthazar always thought that question was harder to answer than it was... but he tried his best. He couldn't help but want to share after the number of drinks he'd had, but he tried not to share too much. "I was born a little south of Yaralon." In a hut where rioting villagers killed my mother and father. "My mother and father lived dangerous lives. When they were gone, I moved a little north to work with a farmer and his family." Well they took me from my crib and raised me until they could use me as a farmhand. "Then one night someone- not me- left a candle out and the farm burned down so we all moved to the city. I met a Defiance mage named Xanax and became his apprentice." And Isabella, who I had a romantic relationship with before she killed my master. "I spent a few arcs in that city and was initiated into two different magics." It totally sucked both times. The first time I was buried alive and the second time I found out what really happened to my parents. "Eventually my master was betrayed by someone he trusted," Me. "and he died. So I moved to Yaralon. Lived there for a few arcs... good arcs... but eventually I had to move on. I stopped in Viden and eventually made my way here." Where I found the woman I was looking for and we agreed not to kill each other.

"Alright, time for a little magic." Balthazar clapped his hands, finally ready to show Yeva the magic trick. Her little shadow bunny was adorable but he couldn't watch her play with her shadow all night. "I learned this ability earlier today when I was sparring at the Proving Grounds. You may not want to watch this next part, but don't worry, everything is under control." Balthazar explained to Yeva as he took the sharp rock firmly into one hand. He turned his body just a little bit away from Yeva so she wouldn't have to see what he did next. A cut wouldn't do. His hand would heal the cut before he could really do the trick. "You said you've read a lot of books, so I'll try not to disappoint." It happened in a swift motion. He brought the sharp rock up, and then drove it down through his palm. Balthazar's eyes widened and he let out a noise similar to a squeak as he tried to keep from revealing how much pain he was in. He quickly pulled the rock out and applied pressure to his hand. The wound was too large for his mutation to burn shut quickly, just what he had wanted... but it didn't feel great. "Don't worry, I'm a Yari, we get stabbed all the time." Balthazar tried to keep Yeva comfortable while he struggled with his bleeding hand.

Balthazar let the rock drop to the floor and tried to make sure he didn't get any blood on his shirt. He turned only enough so that Yeva could see his hand had been truly wounded and then he reached out towards the torch beside them with no caution. The flames wrapped around his hand, dancing down his wrist but no further as his bleeding hand began to shimmer. Balthazar took a deep breath in through his nose and then out through his mouth, trying to calm his mind and ignore the pain enough to coax his spark into the right action. Help me. He urged the fire with his mind and soul. His skin seemed to blacken beneath the flames at first but Balthazar didn't seem to be in pain... in fact he seemed relieved.

The blackened skin seemed to burst and in a trill Balthazar's hand had become one with the flames encircling it. The fire dancing around his wrist seemed to rush forth into the gap in the flaming hand where Balthazar had stabbed himself. Balthazar took another breath, still trying to focus on his magic but distracted by wanting to see Yeva's reaction. Another trill passed and the fire seemed to turn back to the torch and away from Balthazar, leaving only the hand of fire. Then, slowly, those flames began to fade as well, revealing Balthazar's now undamaged hand. "Ta-da! Healing with fire."

Re: Hey! Remember the Baby Snatcher?

26 Ashan 720

"Stone fingers?" her nose wrinkled in amusement, "No, I didn't think that. Maybe, like," she rubbed her own digits together, imagining what she wanted to vocalize, "Gritty? Like plates of sand, or a metal file. I wanted to see what they felt like. Just cuuuurious," Yeva grinned with a shrug, and was happy to listen to Balthazar's history as intently as a woman with creeping intoxication could, eager to ask questions but unable to form them. Just when it felt like she was slogging through the increasing mental fog, Balthazar was ready and the shadow bunny ran off as soon as her arms lowered.

Magic time, "Yeah?" she was excited, bounding back to his side while he turned his body away. Yeva, not understanding, tried to peer around, following his hands and the stone that was lifted to soon be forced into the flesh of his palm. She gasped, hand instinctively reaching towards his back only to receive a quick shock. She withdrew her hand with a surprised yelp, having forgotten his mutation.

The surprise was short-lived, Yeva worried for Balthazar, but as if he could read her mind, he made an effort of reassurance, "Don't worry, I'm a Yari, we get stabbed all the time."

Was that supposed to make her feel better? Blood rolled down his palm and dripped to the cobblestone path, the sound of the rock clattering as he dropped it and reached towards the torch, "Are you okay!" she was shot with anxiety, wringing her hands but as she went to step forward, the fire shifted, reaching for Balthazar like a needy child and wrapped around his palm. It spread, blackening, combusting and she took a fearful step back. So this was magic.

It moved and she was speechless, watching relief flicker across Balthazar's face when she expecting pain. Then, when the flame didn't appear to be growing, she leaned forward, watching in amazement as it danced back to to the torch and left Balthazar's skin as it was before. The ominous char was gone, leaving the mage's hand unblemished.

"Ta-da! Healing with fire!"

Yeva stared, mouth agape, and then seemed to shoot into the air as she jumped towards him, "That was amazing!" Wonder swirled in her dark eyes and she reached for him again, excitement and curiosity numbing her notice of the electric shock that buzzed her skin when she grabbed his forearm, "You did that? And you're not hurt?" She felt like a child again, amazed by an unexplained trick, and she looked for the secret, turning his hand over repeatedly, and pushing his sleeve higher as if he was hiding a truth. He was warm, but she wasn't sure if that was normal or not; she hadn't noticed before, "You firebug! You scared me. Okay, my turn."

Yeva dropped his arm and with a drunken grin, stepped back with a bundle of repressed giggles. This was going to be so stupid, "Now you see me!" she grabbed the opening of her cloak and lifted it up and ducked her head inside, a few stray curls still sticking out and visible, "Now you don't!" The only thing to vanish was her face, which she knew, but seemed to relish in the dumb joke nonetheless.

Even from the darkness of her outerwear, Yeva was bursting into a fit of laughter. She was feeling the alcohol now, clearly, "Ta-da," she teased, peeking back out of the heavy green fabric, "I'm so steal-thy," she snorted, nodding towards the cobblestone as her amusement began to ease. While the wind was still biting, she wasn't prepared to steal any more drinks, should they return to the tavern, "Wanna take a walk, firebug? Cool off?"

Re: Hey! Remember the Baby Snatcher?

Having met both sober Yeva and drunk Yeva, Balthazar should have been aware of certain differences in Yeva's actions and mannerisms. However because he too was drunk, he didn't. He just thought she was normally this prone to touching people. "I hope my hands were to your satisfaction." Balthazar surmised as Yeva looked over his repaired limb. There was always somewhat of a dull ache left where he'd been wounded but the fire had healed all the real damage. He was glad to see how amused Yeva was at the trick he'd performed. It was rare that you saw someone as fascinated by magic as Balthazar was and even more rare to see them as intoxicated as the duo were.

Balthazar helped pull his sleeve up slightly to allow Yeva a better look at his arm when she was desperately investigating the appendage. When she seemed content and announced that it was her turn for a magic trick, Balthazar's eyes widened slightly. She was going to show him a trick? Well that was certainly something he wanted to see. A grin spread over Balthazar's face in anticipation of the show he was about to get. There was only a small worry at the back of his mind that Yeva might attempt something similar to what he'd done and that fear vanished the moment she pulled the opening of her cloak over her head.

Discipline was great and all but even Balthazar couldn't hold in his laughter as Yeva defied and exceeded his expectations. It bubbled to the surface and then burst out of Balthazar when he saw Yeva's hair poking out of her cloak. "Yeva? Yeva where did you go?" Balthazar played along as he cast a glance around like a babysitter trying to convince child they couldn't find them during a game of hide and seek. Then Yeva reemerged with a ta-da and Balthazar laughed again. "And to think you waste your mastery of stealth on medicine." Balthazar mused before Yeva suggested they take a walk to cool off. Balthazar couldn't exactly cool off- the fire in his blood always burned, but he was more than eager to take a walk with Yeva now. She was becoming more and more fascinating as the night went on. First she'd stolen drinks, now she'd made a grumpy mage laugh. Balthazar was sure he wanted to be around for her next trick so he held out an arm. "A walk would be lovely, firehair." He said in a mockingly proper voice. If he was to be firebug he'd not let the color of her hair go unremarked upon! However after a trill he changed his mind. "No, not firehair... hm... mouse? Mice are stealthy? But you don't look like a mouse. Mice can be gross but you're-" Balthazar caught himself "Not gross. How about... greeny... no... unless you wear green every day... oh I've got it! Vanishing woman! No not that either... help me out here, what's a good nickname for you?"

Re: Hey! Remember the Baby Snatcher?

26 Ashan 720

"Firehair!" the woman pretended to be exasperated, but was grinning when she looked up at him, "You want me to help you come up with MY nickname? That not very fun, but at least I'm not gross." Yeva laughed, shaking her head. Every thought was a jumble, bumbling into the confines of her mind, but still, it was easy to speak. The words flowed without hindrance, unbound by embarrassment or societal etiquette. In fact, Yeva seemed to sway when she walked, listening to a song on the wind that wasn't there, "You may call me-!"

"Hmmmmmmmmm..."

Each footfall was heavy, Yeva's attention drawn between the people still moving along the streets and the fuzziness she felt. She tugged at the collar of her blouse. It was too tight. But her skirt was soft. She ran her palms up and down the sides of the pleated fabric and while a slow smile crept back to her thoughtful face, "Yeva Blue. Or-!"

She lifted a finger, spinning around so that her attire swished in a flair of playful drama, "Miss Blue. Or... Matchstick. Or..." she chuckled, seeming to find the numerous variations amusing. Most satisfying was the color contrast to her choice and that of her natural coloring. Soon, with any luck, Yeva hoped her cloak would be changed to match, "A boy once called me Blushes. Which, I didn't mind the nickname, but I didn't like him. It wasn't fair- "

Yeva huffed at the memory, images of her teen years flooding back, "He told all of his friends we had sex!" Her hands clenched and she pointed at Balthazar, eyes alight with furious passion, "Which wasn't true! And I was sooo mad! I went to school, socked him right in the mouth for lying!"

She threw a punch at the air, still able to picture smug Daniel's zit-face. She wanted to hit him again, if she was being honest. Yeva tapped her mouth, "Lost his front tooth...First time I ever got in a fight," Admitting that made her remember who she was talking to. Yeva glanced up, crossing her arms across her chest. Had Balthazar ever been picked on? It looked unlikely, but she hesitated, "Maybe I'm not a good influence?"

Chewing on her bottom lip, she felt hot now, "What'dya think? What's your favorite?"

Re: Hey! Remember the Baby Snatcher?

"Well your hair is rather... red... and it's not quite straight its- what's the word? Wavy? No... curly? I guess." Balthazar stumbled through his explanation of the first nickname he'd gone for and decided against. Balthazar watched Yeva sway as she walked, thinking of the nickname he would be able to use for her. While she found discomfort in her blouse and the amusement at how soft her skirt was, Balthazar was distracted by something else entirely- well not entirely. Yeva still had more than half of his attention but as a Defiance, Rupturing, and Attunement mage Balthazar always had a fair share of distractions running through his head. Being drunk made it harder to keep them under control.

He felt the chill of the wind on his neck like a friend whispering secrets about the coming trials of weather but he didn't understand it. Even a master couldn't interpret the elements if they weren't paying enough attention. Balthazar had instead, in his drunken state, decided to try and attune to Yeva. He had a horrible feeling they were going to get lost and he certainly knew Scalvoris well enough to know he didn't want her to get separated. However attuning drunk was a little harder than Balthazar thought. He giggled at the sound of her frequency. The notes he felt in her that resonated strongly in his own frequency made him laugh but to Yeva it would seem her dramatic swooshing skirt had been the cause. Inebriation... a fun note to learn for an attuner.

Yeva rattled off a few nicknames. Yeva Blue, not a nickname if it's just your name and something else. But who was Balthazar Black to judge? Matchstick. Balthazar liked that one quite a bit. It fit her hair and at least seemed to fit her drunken personality. A matchstick, a fire-starter, and Balthazar liked fire... but not in an arson-y kind of way. Then she told him of a boy who called her Blushes and Balthazar giggled again before covering his mouth suddenly. He'd stabbed himself in the hand and still wasn't sober enough not to giggle. He couldn't help but think the story was amusing and admire the way she'd resolved it. Like a Yari. She threw the punch in the air and Balthazar applauded, wobbling slightly before regaining his balance. "Good form!" Not true. It was an okay punch but not really great.

"I wish I could have seen that! I know you can throw a punch after all, but knocking a tooth out? Well done." Then Balthazar laughed as a devious thought crossed his mind. "Though if it wasn't true, why'd you get so worked up about it? I tend to ignore rumors about myself unless there is some truth to them." Playful teasing, but Balthazar wanted to see if Blushes really was the best nickname for Yeva. Then he thought of something add when Yeva seemed to lament about not being a good influence. "Well if you can't be a good influence, just try to be a fun one... and... watch your language around children. That seems to be enough not to scar them for life." Balthazar mumbled the last part, not quite happy to think of children again after... well he shook the thought from his head. Taking a deep breath to focus of Yeva just as she began to chew on her bottom lip.

Balthazar's eyes widened slightly when she asked what nickname he thought was best but his shock was not related to her question at all. It was related to the thought that passed through his head. Oh damn. Oh no. Oh shoot. She's cute. Nickname! Nickname! Pick a nickname, stupid! Balthazar looked up, then he looked down, then he turned in a circle for a moment as if he was looking around at his options for nicknames before looking back at Yeva again. Damn. Still cute. Was it getting hot outside? Was it the mutation? Balthazar couldn't have been blushing could he? No... well maybe a little but the soft glow on coming from his skin might have hidden it... or made it worse. "I think I like Matchstick, goes with your hair... but Blushes might be more accurate." Good answer, dummy. Stop grinning. Stop grinning! He didn't stop grinning.

Re: Hey! Remember the Baby Snatcher?

Why did she get so worked up if it wasn't true?

"Because!" Yeva huffed, "It's reputation! And... That's not something you lie about and even if we had..." she grasped the air, getting more flustered as the memory resurfaced and the words became harder to say, "It's jus not okay.... To t-tell everyone about it."

The memory was clear, despite how many arcs it happened. It was a warm day; she remembered walking up to a group of people she thought had been her friends. How she listened as the teenage boy wove his story and made of vulgar details about her body and the sounds she made. But what it the worst and neigh unbearable for young Yeva, was that the culprit's best friend had been the one she truly fancied. He laughed the loudest at the story, howling into the summer breeze, "You did her a favor. She's nice, but... she's kinda weird, right?"

The words had been a dagger in her trusting, love-struck heart, and all the shame and humiliation bred with anger and betrayal, twisting inside her stomach until rational thinking wasn't what she desired. She wanted to blame someone for her feelings - and she did - the liar. Usually a patient person, the rush of raw emotion had been too much and she had attacked without restraint. It had felt like someone else had taken over.

Tendrils of old abashment flickered even now, and she sighed to try to ease her muddled mind, remembering she had company, "It was a long time ago," Yeva muttered, glancing over at Balthazar. With his white hair and gold eyes and magic, it seemed she wasn't the only oddity in the world. She gave a small smile at the reference to children, "Oh, is that all?" she raised a brow, stopping to look at tall wooden street sign. It was painted white with dark lettering nearly lost to the shadows, and she rounded the corner, "Some would say food and shelter helps, but... you know, that might spoil them. I'll have to be careful."

She grinned at the joke, taking a moment to admire the new street. It appeared the shops were beginning to disperse and more residential homes were lining the road. They came in all sorts of shapes and sizes, telling of Scalvoris' unique nature. It was nice to appreciate the architectural differences between here and the other cities, but perhaps not the most fun. Yeva touched her cheek, thinking of the nicknames. It didn't seem so embarrassing when a friendly face said them; or maybe that was because of the alcohol. And speaking of pink cheeks and drink, Balthazar's own face seemed a bit dusted with warmth. Convinced it was a by-product of his alcohol consumption, it was still a curious thought to think someone so intimidating could ever be bothered that way, "Truth or dare?" she asked suddenly, hoping he would choose the former but suddenly more convinced of the game's amusement by the trill.

It was time to see what embarrassed Detective Black.
