Lavanas Amber eyes fell to Vega as she started making jokes about his shoe size and manhood. Apparently there wasn't much loin in his trousers and Lavana found herself thoroughly enthused with the gruff woman's word play.

Clearly if they could all joke about something like that then he couldn't of been the perpetrator of these delightfully heinous crimes. Instead she opted to view him as being perhaps caught in the middle of a bad situation that she exacerbated like a cold hearted bitch of course. She turned to Vega smiling "If the shoe, fits!."

Her hand rubbed the back of her neck as she gave off a cheeky smile that bordered on sheepish. As Sephira gave off a frightful glare, it didn't need to be said it was that most intimidating tool in a woman's arsenal the scowling look of dissaproval. They said eyes were the windows to ones soul and what she saw behind them was scorn and fury.

You'd expect a quip but none came. Understanding leadership she could grasp the concept of the chain of command, Sephira was the authority figure and the mortal born disciplined herself enough to conform in a manner that didn't involve a sarcastic remark. Lavana would behave, she understood the concepts of being a soldier and corporal punishments there was no need to get Sephira court marshalled so shed make herself an asset instead of just an ass.

"Let's go" as she motioned to the not so mysterious stranger to come follow her."Before she gets pissed and arrests us"

As she ascended the stairs she looked around in one of the bed rooms, shed start going over dressers and nightstands opening and gently closing them as she looked around for anything written that might be an informative clue. Usually you could find a paper trail, she half suspected shed come across a drug dealers black book or messages from a mistress. Maybe something else, like black mail or hate mail the possibilities were endless with the written word.

"Tio is it? It's a pleasure to meet you!"

Lavana seemed enthusiastic as she offered her hand to him to shake it. Her Amber eyes tried to detect anything strange or unusual about him, but her ability to do so was no existent. Just the words im harmless bothered her much like a prisoner saying he's innocent.

"Anyway I've found some parchments, not sure if it's anything? Wanna take a look over these, and tell me if it's anything?"

She handed him her paper findings to see if he could detect anything she could not. And while she did her best to look for clues this was not her strong suit, but shed go about trying to detect anything unusual or out of place with her surroundings

The papers handed to Tio were especially exciting and illuminating and just chock full of extremely useful information. If one was an accountant or really, really enjoyed mathematics. As it turned out, Tio had just enough experience with the intricacies and details of handling money and business to realize them for what they were. Ledgers. Or rather, pages from a ledger. And the numbers didn't look good for whoever they belonged to. Someone had amassed quite a lot of debt, and was very clearly struggling to pay it off. In the notes, all that was provided as an indication as to whom the debt was owed to was a set of initials. SCI.

Meanwhile, the super sleuth known as Lavana was scouring the upstairs with her clearly, expertly trained eyes. When compared to someone without eyes. Or training. But at least her eyes did work. And they fell upon several interesting things within the room. A small alter tucked away in the corner, with a glass statuette of a coin upon a down flow of water, possibly an icon to Chamadurst was the first. The second was a small bag of what appeared to be bird seed, lazily tossed upon an end table. Finally, a pair of worn, leather gloves, with the mixed scent of fertilizer and lavender, limply sitting upon a window sill.

And as Sephira reached out to the frequencies, she'd find several, of course. But it would take time to decipher them, determine which were of import and which were fluff. But it was slow going for the novice Attuner. The corpse was giving off many vibrations, strangely enough. Dying frequencies of the emotions he felt before slain, predominately confusion. Fear didn't appear to be present. A soft vibration also led away from the corpse, out of the house, and westward far beyond her reach to feel it. But more concerning was the heavy vibrations below the corpse, below the floor. There didn't appear to be any obvious stairs or doors to go beneath the house, but there was 'something' down there.

As for Vega, following a trail like that was hardly any challenge. This wasn't her first rodeo after all. It led westward for a ways, quite a long ways, right to the edge of town. And then they stopped cold. There was nothing around them to indicate why they'd have stopped. The tracks were isolated, not accompanied by any others, with no walls or anything to indicate a climb. Just poof, gone. Or that would be the case for most, but Vega was not most. She could discern subtle changes in the snow around where the tracks stopped. Spots that appeared to be caused by odd bursts of air or wind, far different from the rest of the snow in the area. The final tracks were also deeper at the ball of the foot, indicating a shift of weight forward and downward. Possibly a jump?

And in the distance, the Menagerie loomed, many of the flighted inhabitants comfortable in the safety and warmth the branches provided.

Fortunately for Tio the Element soldier, who introduced herself as Sephira, agreed to his proposal that they should work together, albeit with clear reluctance. It seemed that she had decided that working with him in order to catch the murderer was the lesser of two evils, and honestly as long as she didn't plan to clap him in chains the moment the job was done that was fine with him. A lot of the other criminals on Scalvoris described him as an 'acquired taste' apparently, a trying but ultimately useful business partner, so he was somewhat used to working with people who found him irritating. It could actually be quite fun to poke at such people's nerves and see how long it took them to explode. Was it worth testing Sephira's patience though when she already had the power and cause to throw him in jail? Perhaps he should wait until he'd proven himself useful first?

"Aye aye Captain!" He replied enthusiastically when Vega commanded him and the armoured woman, Lavana, to search upstairs, shooting her a crisp, overeager salute as he turned to leave. He followed the leather-clad lady upstairs towards the bedroom, a roguish grin growing on his face. "So, quick question: if I was to make a joke about the two of us heading to a bedroom together how likely are you to stab me? Because if it's less than half it's worth it."

Once upstairs Lavana introduced herself properly and handed him some papers to look through. As Tio replied his eyes stayed fixed on the papers while he flicked through them. "Yep, that's me. Tio of the Tarnished Silver Crown they call me, or at least they do in Darbyton anyway." He looked over to Lavana. "And your name was Lavana right? Nice to meet you too. From the looks of that sword you've got there I take it you're a soldier of some kind, right? And from your accent I'm guessing you're not from around here. What brings you to Scalvoris? Fame? Riches? Fluffy animals?"

As his eyes returned to the pages Tio suddenly had the feeling that all these rows of numbers looked familiar somehow. Hadn't he seen Grace writing things down in a book rather like this one before? Yes, now that he thought about he had; every time they sold some of their plundered cargo to a buyer! He was staring at a financial logbook! And from the looks of things the costs of whatever business this was keeping track of far exceeded the income. Profits had been in the negative for the past arc, and to cover those losses the owner had kept taking loans from someone with the initials SCI.

"Well now, it seems like our victim might have been wrapped up in something pretty big after all." He muttered, holding up one of the pages for Lavana to see. "These are financial ledgers. If these belong to our victim, which I reckon they do, then she owed quite a lot of money to someone. Let's go back and show these to the boss lady. I reckon we've just found the motive."

If Lavana agreed then Tio would lead the way back downstairs, and wave the ledgers around as he entered the room in which the murder took place. "Looky here detective, we found ledgers. It seems our victim was in a lot of debt to someone with the initials SCI. Maybe this SCI took advantage of all the serial killer fever to get revenge on a bad investment that never paid them back and lay the blame on Cuckoo? Still there's no notes on where to find this guy though."

After a moment of silence the Notes began flowing to her, like droplets of water coasting down a thread of spider’s silk. She examined the Notes with the aid of her spark and eventually began to recognize the emotions and actions associated with them. The corpse itself was reverberating with a Frequency that held melodies associated with confusion. The victim had not been afraid when they died, but confused. Perhaps the killer had been someone that they had known, rather than a stranger.

Her attention was then torn away from the corpse as strange reverberations of a Frequency was coming from the floorboards beneath the body. Sephira could not get a trace on the exact notes, and her Attunement Spark seemed confused, as if it could not quite get a read on the source. A faint trembling Frequency seemed to lead away to the west as well.

The mage released her hold on the Frequencies and opened her eyes just as Tio was descending from the stairs. She listened as he reported his findings then reached for the ledgers with an open palm.

What he had said was true. The victim had been in a great deal of debt.

“Good work.” She noted flatly before closing the ledger and handing it back to Tio. Sephira then took a moment to explain her findings.

“I’m a mage, an Attuner, among other things and I used Attunement to examine the scene. “she explained. “ It allows me to sense frequencies associated with strong emotions or events. The victim was feeling confusion right before they died, so we can presume that they may have known their killer. We can also guess that this was no random occurrence; perhaps the murderer used the chaos surrounding the copycat killings to make their move. “

Sephira stepped over the body and stood over the spot where the strongest vibration had originated from. She knelt down to a knee and stared at the floor below the body. Something was down there.

“I also felt...something down there.” The mage focused on the space and an idea occurred to her. Perhaps she could open a phasing portal inside the space just below the floorboards. It would allow her to see inside if there was indeed something below them.

Sephira held both of her hands out in front of her, one laid over the other as she reached for a nearby swirling pocket of ether. It swam into her grasp and she focused on the space below the floor. The woman had used Rupturing to open Phase portals on the other side of doors before, hopefully the tactic would work here as well.

Crimson bands of light wove together while Sephira began moving her hands apart, like she was opening a tiny window between her outstretched fingers. Her witchmark ignited, its red light glimmering in her eyes which allowed her to see the image that was pooling on the surface of the tiny portal.

The scene was almost completely obscured in shadow, but in the corner of the small chamber was a lantern filled with glow worms, not all that dissimilar to those used by the Sev’ryn. The light provided by the worms was dim as it seemed that the creatures were on their last leg, but it was enough to sight the barely illuminated outline of a door in the corner.

"Does this house have a basement?” Sephira asked softly as she peered through the spiraling web of magic that danced between her fingers.

"Well," Vega said, coming back in at what she figured was probably the perfect moment. Handy, that, "the tracks went out, an' I followed em. They got to the edge of town, in fact, an' then they jus' stopped." She frowned slightly, then looked around the others. "Except, it were right weird. When they got to where they stopped, their weight moved, like they did this," rather than try and explain with words, when she really wasn't very good with those, Vega moved her body, positioning herself in the way that the tracks had indicated. "An' not jus' that. There were other signs in the snow, too, like the air 'ad shifted around in little pockets an' stuff, around them." If they asked, she gave all the details she had. No, no walls or reasons why they could have disappeared and yep, they were looking straight at the Menagerie.

Then Vega listened to the others, to what they had found and she frowned. "So, 'ang on. Hold fire, I'm not the brightest. Pee-wee here will attest to that," she'd let the hairy feet thing go past, but she decided that there was only so much that she could really allow. Her grin to Tio was genuine, though, and not at all malicious or anything negative. She enjoyed a good banter, had to be said. So, the victim had a lot of debt to SCI? "People usually 'ave like, two initials, don't they? Like, I'm Vega Lei'nox. VL. Three, it might be a group? Scalvoris CI?" She shrugged.

But checking the floor seemed to be what Sephira was doing and Vega nodded. "There's a basement, yeah. I went past the door to it on my way out. It's in the kitchen. Why?" Not sure whether to be suspicious or impressed by the woman's magic, Vega decided impressed with undertones of not quite trusting was probably the best way to go. So, she looked at the floor like she could see anything and then looked up. "Stairs down, but the door was open, an' I didn't see any light or anythin'. Course, that don't mean there isn't another door, down the bottom of the steps."

Looking around Vega shrugged slightly. "My vote would be that we go 'ave a looksie, see if there's anything in the basement if the boss-lady says so, an' then follow those tracks. They jus' disappeared, though, stopped dead. Could 'ave been picked up by somethin' flyin', I reckon. Big wings, disrupted the air around, you know?" Looking back at the crime scene, Vega frowned. "I don't understan' why people see the need to hurt other people over somethin' as stupid as money. Come on then, you lot, lets get on an' not start lollygaggin'. That really pickles my walnut that does."

Twas true Lavana had reservations about Tio, well you know until he spoke to her and whatever inhibitions she had about a creeper tat be creeping in a dark corner was instantly absolved as he played one of her favorite kinds of word games. And her eyes widened with a kind of giddy excitement.

"I been saying it for years, you gotta stick it to them before they stick it you!" As Lavana cackled in delight about making bedroom jokes, was this guy for real the mortal born thought?

She absolutely soaked in his mischievous personality and hijinks when she came in close to go over the papers. Lavana wanted to understand this kind of paper work, as she took notes and hung on his every word. The mortal born had an idea of papers and ledgers, but simply did not know how to apply it and this was good as he learned about crunching numbers and deficits from someone in the know.

"You know, I came for Callys but stayed for the booty."Of course her eyes lit up with shock and surprise as Tio mentioned her real name as shed inadvertently slipped up."Sorry, no no my name's Alva caught me tripping over your bedroom banter. The cute ones do that, ya know." As she winked at the Tarnished Silver.

Lavana had hoped she covered her tracks with flattery , as shed slipped up in her disguise.

As she looked around, she was no detective but she had eyes and spotted gloves with fertilizer. Gloves that smelled like shit! It's a clue, as she rubbed her chin passing back and forth as it was all starting to come together. Nahhh ain't nothing worth reporting she thought. Well, it did smell like flowers of some kind, but she scrunched her nose when she realized she was sniffing shit. Maybe there's a garden?

Lavanas Amber eyes fell on bird seeds, and she instantly shook her head bag of shitty seeds for shitty pigeons. Nupe, not a clue and she wasn't going to bother with winged rats filthy beasts. But shed take the bag

Lavanas last clue had to literally leap out and bite her in the ass, as she stepped into a corner and saw a glass coin. And looked upon the weird looking thing, it had substance and flare and it had style; it looked religious with its symbolism.

Was this a clue? Nahh anyone who wanted to get rich, would pray to some glass coin. If she were broke shed pray to get paid and not go to work either.

"Yea let's go, the only thing that really looked like a clue to me were those gloves. Maybe he buried something outback? Aside from shit they smelled like lavender, just don't ask me why I smelt em."As she shook her head in disbelief while she followed Tio down the stairs as she too would report her findings.

"Sephira, most I found was a pair of cruddy Gloves. Maybe he was working in a garden or something. And what Tio said has to be true, this guy so broke he was praying to get paid." As she broke out into a small laughing fit.

Of course there was more going on as Vega was talking about having a look in the basement, and Lavana was all for it. Fuck yea, wave her sword at shit walk into some underground crypt and go on a dungeon crawl like never before. She was thoroughly enjoying Vega, as she eyed the biqaq with enthusiasm.

Yea Vegas right!, let's go wreck shit !

The were many thing Tio was immune to: alcohol, drugs, poisons and such. But flattery? Not even a little. When Lavana fed him the line about being called Alva and called him cute it caught him hook line and sinker, and he grinned sheepishly as he replied. "Ah, sorry about that. Alva it is." The corners of his grin curled up a little as a devious spark lit up in his eyes. "But then again since we're on this subject already I should let you that I rarely use people's real names anyway. Henceforth you shall be..." He gave her a quick, appraising look. "Butterfly! Yes, it's perfect for you!"

When Sephira revealed that she could use a form of magic called Attunement, and explained what it was, Tio had to try very hard not to let on how interested he was. He'd heard of the magic in passing before during Ozbourne's lessons on the history of the Seekers, as it was the most prolific spark amongst their ranks and regarded by many as a must-have for any serious magician, but he hadn't yet learnt much about what it actually did. So it allowed the user to harness some kind of magical sixth sense? That sounded like a spark it might be worth trying to obtain for himself.

But such thoughts would have to wait. For now he needed to focus on the investigation, and so Tio turned his attention back to the group as they began discussing the basement. "Alrighty then, it sounds like we're all agreed that taking a look downstairs is our best bet. You're the boss Detective, do you want to lead on?"

Providing that Sephira did indeed want to lead, Tio followed her as they headed into the kitchen. The door to the basement was built into the floor and was thankfully unlocked, allowing them to pull it open without much effort, and revealed a set of dusty stone stairs leading down into the darkness below. Why was it that there seemed to be so many staircases leading down into pitch darkness in his life? With the long-suffering sigh of a person who was way too used to this sort of thing, Tio reached into his domain bag and pulled out a torch and a tinderbox to light it with.

A few moments later the torch was lit, and with it Tio illuminated the way downstairs. They soon arrived at the bottom, where another door stood before them that was, sadly, locked. "Well, guess I'd better earn my spot on this team. Mind holding this for a second?" Tio asked Vega, passing the torch over to her and taking out the set of lockpicks from his pocket. He knelt in front of the keyhole and got to work prodding and poking at the pin chambers, fiddling around with mechanism and making various humming noises as he tried to concentrate, and a couple of bits later the door made a loud clicking sound and swung open.

"Ta da!" Tio sang, making jazz hands as he invited the three ladies to go in before him. The basement room was average in size and built purely from stone, but had an overpowering smoky smell to it with an unpleasant tinge that nobody could quite identify. Set up in the room was a pair of long wooden tables and a small horde of well-used chemistry equipment, scattered around in a mess that seemed to follow some kind of vaguely size-related method of organisation. A large chalkboard had been hung on the wall that at one point seemed to have had a large amount of writing on it, but that had been hastily erased. Lying on the floor underneath it was a notebook, open in the middle to show that a lot of the pages had been torn out.

Sephira turned to Vega when she mentioned the tracks leading away from the home. She nodded as she spoke.
“The remnants of a frequency trailed off in that direction as well. I’m guessing it was likely the killer’s escape route. “

The red headed woman was capable, to say the least. Sephira understood very little about tracking and other skills that a hunter might employ. It might behoove her to learn such things in the future.

After Tio spoke, Sephira motioned in the direction of the downstairs door. “Let’s go take a look then.”

She took the lead, assuming that the group would follow behind her. Once they found their way into the dusty stairwell she proceeded to begin her decent. Her booted feet clacked heavily on the stone steps, echoing in the narrow stairwell. Sephira kept her right hand on the hilt of her saber, even if the blade would be nearly useless in such tight confines. Thankfully once they reached the locked door at the bottom, Tio emerged to pick the lock. She could have used Rupturing to get inside, but his method far more practical and stealthy. One of the drawbacks of her magic was the loud booming sound produced by portal creation. It was a characteristic she often had to consider prior to using her magic, as at it could easily startle nearby civilians or give away her location.

The mage smirked at Tio’s jazz hands. At least the man was amusing, even if he had been trespassing earlier. For a moment Sephira considered the time that they had remaining before the guard returned. Perhaps three quarters of a break had passed since they began their hunt. They likely had only fifteen bits to wrap things up before they were discovered.

“Observe only, do not touch anything if you can help it. The Elements may need to collect evidence.” She stated firmly, eyeing Tio warily as the door swung open. Whatever was in this room, the previous occupant had gone to great lengths to hide and protect. Immediately the group was assaulted by the scent of smoke along with the aroma of a strange chemical that she could not identify. Tio’s torch illuminated the interior, providing just enough light to see by.

Sephira stepped between the pair of wooden tables and looked around the stone lined room. Vials, flasks, glass tubes and other chemistry equipment was scattered all around them. The blackboard had recently been erased and a notebook lay open beneath it. The Element moved toward the notebook, touching it briefly to turn some of the remaining pages that had not been torn out. A few scribbles and a half written chemical formula was scrawled inside.

The chemical smell she had detected earlier was beginning to give her a headache, it possessed an acidic scent that made her nose twitch in discomfort.
“Looks like a lab.” She remarked idly.

“Drugs maybe? Does anyone recognize that scent?” She sounded distracted as she began trying to piece together what had really happened.
“The victim may have been a drug producer, maybe they were killed when a deal went south, or over money but the murderer took the opportunity to make it look like a copycat killing to cover their tracks. Or maybe it’s only a coincidence that this is here. “She mused, almost to herself.
“Any thoughts?” she asked, turned back to the group. Investigation was not her strong suit, perhaps Vega could tell them more since she seemed to be rather talented at noticing details and tracking clues.

Down they went, although Vega raised an eyebrow at Lavana's interpretation of her words. She was fairly sure that she hadn't said that they should go do that, but then, to each their own and she had to admit that, every now and then, at moments of extreme stress, she did talk a bit funny. Just now and then, and not so anyone would notice. No.

Moving on.

Sephira told them to observe only, not to touch and so on and Vega kept quiet, doing as she was told. It was a rare occurrence in some ways, but then she did tend towards doing as told by the guards. Her father had told her from as early as she could remember that biqaj were largely not trusted and, therefore, she should be extra respectful. It was, in truth, not least because he thought his daughter's mouth - and temper - would get her into a lot of trouble, one of these trials, but it had worked. Mostly.

Sephira spoke about what she saw and Vega frowned and nodded. Looking around, she dismissed the notebook, that wasn't her forte at all, but she was able to give them some details. "There were four people workin' here. One there, there, there an' there." Pointing accompanied what she did. "An' they left in an hurry an' then some. Speedy movers, for sure. I don't think no one was bein' coerced, though, they weren't dragged or nothin'." She glanced at the tubes and stuff, he head starting to thimp slightly.

"But look, 'ere." Vega said, kneeling next to a small crate. "Gloves an' masks an' protective stuff. I think maybe this place ain't quite safe to be in, you know. An' they've got a lot of buckets of sand an' stuff, too, scattered round." It could mean that what they were breathing in was dangerous and might be likely to burst in to flame, she supposed. "I guess the thing to do might be to wait outside till the guards come an' tell 'em what we've found?"

That made sense to her. It even sounded vaguely grown up and sensible, Vega thought.

How depressing.

ICE CREAM AFTER DINNER
or perhaps your second helping

So an element, a pirate captain, a mortalborn, and a vagabond walk into a murder scene....

This thread was highly interesting, but I'm sad that it has such an abrupt ending. Certainly was room for more to go on, but maybe this can be picked up at a later date in a later thread? Who knows; there's always the possibility.
Tio

Comments

Ah, Tio. The pirate captain. To be fair, he did have a somewhat...never mind his reasoning for this was mostly selfish, but I'm amused to see he was able to finesse his way out of getting arrested by Sephira. Looked a little like he was coming close to it. Would be disappointing if Tio went the straight and narrow in this thread. He's such a fun character to read.

Comments

Wowie zowie, someone was highly annoyed in this thread. I see Seph was already prepping for leadership positions in this thread ;) It was nice to see someone not give in too entirely to Tio's short bout of antics and take charge of this little mystery crew.

Comments

Firefly is such a nice nickname, but somewhat inaccurate. I don't think Vega's easily squished - she certainly wasn't too disturbed by this whole murder scene, if not disappointed to not b beating up some murderers. I'm sure she'll get her chance to put the hurt on someone soon enough :D
