No Rest for the Dead

Doing what he always did, Cervantez had been out in the Yari wilds looking for specimens he could use to further his necromantic research. As a native yari, he knew all to well that many who either sought their own death or simply couldnt handle the burden of life, sought blissful peace through death and would come out here to allow nature to do its work. He was hoping to find some in good shape while the majority would be far worse than he could salvage. As he followed his intended path he came upon a home of some sort. He had seen this place before while traversing the harsh terrain, noticing a family of six, two adults and four offspring. He wanst sure why anyone would want to live out here but he knew that if they were yari's, they could handle themselves. Something seemed off though, which caused the necromancer to investigate. He couldnt put his finger on it, but he could feel something was wrong and he need to see what that nagging feeling he was getting was all about. As he reached the home, it became obvious that there was a battle, blood covered floors and walls, and corpses were found within. Looking at the door he could see where a beast had broken into the home, and the yari fought to defend it. He decided not to let such fine specimens go to waste. They had some minor lacerations, but were still very fresh, allowing Cervantez to believe they had died several trials before he appeared.

He couldnt say he felt bad for them. As a yari one knows the perils of the wilds, and to willing live out here was asking for a swift demise for certain. He pulled all six bodies outside, as well as the corpse of the beast that had attacked them. Seemed to Cervantez that the man of the house was able to do away with the beast before succumbing to the wounds it inflicted. He had to inspect the others, to make sure they could be used in this experiment. Checking each body carefully he ensure that none of them were beyond repair, no use in having a thrall that would fall apart right after being raised. After finding them fit for reanimation Cerv set up his ritual circle in and got started. Extending his hand forth, he channeled his ether into the father of the family. After a few trills, the body began to twitch, moving slightly before slowly sitting up. He moved around for moment, struggling to its feet, before lunging out to attack Cervantez. Before it could get close to the necromancer, Njama got between the, catching the undead by the head with its paw, Cervantez giving the order to end him. Slamming the father's head into the ground, the Massibex crushed the undead's head underneath it. Taking out a journal, Cervantez took notes of this, finding it interesting that some thralls still exhibited emotion such as rage, possibly the emotion they experienced at the time of death. Next was the mother, here was hoping for a better result with her.

Current Theme: Creep

After jotting down a few notes he decided it was best to dig graves for them. After all they were just experiments in his research. Though he was no monster, as this was purely a trail and error practice, to see what ways were best with raising his dead. Now was time to raise the mother, this time by actual physical contact. Upon placing his hand on her skin, it felt cold, and rubbery. It looked as if one good poke and she would burst apart at the seems. Concentrating he channeled his ether into her directly and stepped away, watching as her response was quicker than her spouse. Sitting up she was far easier to manage, but even still the strain to hold her was strong, and it could only last a few more moments, before she collapsed into pieces. He was far more successful round with the mother in terms of raising the corpse, but she expired far too quickly for tastes. Pulling out his journal he made notes on his findings, then took out the research notes of his mentor, trying to find a way to preserve the body so it wouldnt fall apart so easily. Scanning over the worn pages, he came across text on how to keep the bodies in good condition well after dying. An ability known, ironically as preserve, Cervantez poured over the context of the spell and once he had a general understanding he set his eyes onto the next body at his disposal, as Njama put the remains of the mother & father in their graves.

Current Theme: Creep

Now the children were left, the oldest being 19 arcs, the youngest being 5 arcs. The eldest child, their first born son, was stout young man, tall and well built like most yari males were. Still messing with the ways to integrate his ether into his corpses, this time Cervantez channeled his ether into his scythe, tapping the dead teenager's forehead. The Lotharro watched as ether washed over the dead body, but nothing, no change in appearance or anything of that nature. He decided to try it once more, further concentrating on the the preserving effect, bring thoughts of freshness and well kept food to mind in order to facilitate the needed effect for the spell. Tapping the corpses head once again the ether washed over the young man, and for a moment, it seemed as nothing had changed. He was about to slate this one as a fail, when he noticed the coloration of the skin changing, as if the boy was alive almost. Kneeling he touched the skin, and to his surprised it felt like living flesh. Ecstatic he quickly took to his journal, detailing how thought process impacted the desired effects on ones own magic. Excited he now was ready to raise the body, knowing it could hold itself together. To the same effect he tapped the body of the teenage male thinking thoughts of movement and obedience. Fingers twitched, muscles spasms, and after what felt like an eternity the young man sat up, fumbling to his feet. Good, I like were this is going. The necromancer chimed, impressed the newly raised thrall was holding together.

Things were looking up, and Cervantez was proud of the ground he was making. It wasnt easy being a novice necromancer. His mentor was gone and all he had to turn to in terms of knowledge were manuscripts and notes, but even with those he could only get so far. Now was time to see how well he could control this thrall of his. He would have to start with some basics firsts. Alright nothing to major, lets see if you can raise your left arm. Come on, left arm up. He coaxed, but to no avail as the thrall just stood there. He gave it another shot, this time focusing his thoughts into making it move, and it did, just barely. But movement was movement, and any new progress was well received for the necromancer. Now was the time to see if he could garner the same result again. Disconnecting his line to the 19 arc old, he watched as the body dropped to the ground, Njama scoop it up and placing it in the grave made for him. Cervantez was now onto the 15 arc old. Her face was badly slashed, meaning she must have caught the initial blow from the beast as it rampaged through the home. No time for sentiments now, he was on a role and was breaking through to some new knowledge to be learned. Pouring a little bit more ether into his scythe he would go about repeating the same process as he did with her elder brother.

Before he could repeat the process, his own power gave out on him, as he was at the cautionary point before overstepping. He did not need to deal with the problems of going over his intended limit. He couldnt say he was upset though, he made great progress today, raising three bodies, learning a new technique for his necromancy, yes today was definitely a good day for Cervantez. Sitting there, he looked over the last of the family that laid before him. Part of him wanted to feel some shred of pity, but he couldnt. Yari's were battle hardened in an environment tailored to destroy everything that breath. Plus with all the fractures around, and weird shit popping out of them every now an again, one had to be smarter than they were the trial before. He wondered what drove this family to think it would be better to live out here, in this unforgiving terrain. Looking them over he tried his hardest to fathom their reasoning. Not finding what he wanted on the bodies themselves, he said a little prayer, patting Njama on his side so the beast could bury the rest of the family. Going into the home he inspected how they lived, and from his judgement, they managed, they may have had close calls every now and again, but it was a life they came accustomed to. Who was he to judge their stupidity for neglecting the safety of the walls. Was it to prove something? Did they think they could do better with out the protection of a city a trained, battle born warriors. Whatever the reasoning was, it cost them more than they would have liked o pay. As the necromancer came from within the home, he was greeted by a group of armed soldiers. Njama was in a defensive stance next to his master, and Cervantez soothed his rage if only by a minute margin. "How may I help you fine foreigners today?" He asked, eyeing each of them over, confirming his assumption that they were indeed not natives with work

What was he in for now. From the looks of these men they must have been trying to get to Yaralon, from another city maybe. Fatigue, fear, and frustration hung around them like a cloud of filth. The leader of the group stepped forward, his eyes pained, and full of stress. Look all we want is your beast and any nels you have on you. Give those to us and you wont be harmed. It was a demand that made Cervantez smile and laugh. They were in no shape to make demands of him. One of the woman in the group looked at the scene behind Cervantez, holding her hand over her mouth as she pointed. Di.....did you kill this family? She asked, gripping her weapon. Cervantez fixed his mouth to say no, but realizing their condition he said something entirely different. Yes, I killed them, they were hassling me about my magical practices, and i didnt take too kindly to it. So I slaughtered every last one of them, down to the itty bitty toddler. He lied, teasing them with his manner of speech. He was hoping they would react viciously. And like clock work they were highly pissed by his false confession. Outraged the group of shabby adventurers surrounded the necromancer and his pet, to which Cervantez was as calm as could be. We are no longer asking you, a monster like you doesnt deserve to live after killing innocent people in cold blood. The man yelled, charging at Cervantez only to be swatted away like a fly by the necromancer's monstrous sized hound. Come if you think you can take on the big bad necromancer, hahahahahaha!!!!!! A laugh like that was a stretch even for him, but he knew that they were too exhausted and worn down to notice his bad acting. They wouldnt realize it but he was doing them a favor.

Giving the call for his hound to defend, the massibex became a bulwark between Cervantez and the many attackers. The ones that managed to get past the beast's defenses were met by the zing of Cervantez's scythe, in which he landed some well placed hooks into his assailants. By taking them down by lopping off the legs, it allowed for a follow to pierce their vitals far more easily. It was hardly a battle, more of mercy killing in Cervantez's eyes. Yes he was doing these weary travelers a service. They may not know, but they wouldnt have made it to the gates of Yaralon alive at the rate they were going. He could tell that the environment of the region had broken them, some of their souls broken, others their will shattered, and even some the poor saps had their minds scrambled. As he and his pet mowed down the weakened warriors only the wails of their death screams filled the otherwise silent landscape. Cleave after swing, after hack, and every run through of the scythe blade, nothing was left but a dismal scene of carnage. Now sitting atop his bloody maw warhound, Cervantez wiped the blood drying on his face. It seemed one of the adventurers still had some life in him, where as everyone else was well......dead. Barely holding his sword up at Cervantez he cursed at the mage. "How.....could....such a.......demon.....still draw.....breath?! May....the....immortals....curse... you!" Rolling his eyes Cervantez leaned forward, so that his eyes were the only thing the man could see, while he still could that is, and chuckled.

Cervantez was quite amused by that statement. Him a monster, far from it actually. In his eyes he was more of a cooling balm to sooth the pains of life for those who could no longer bear it. With that in mind his gaze became rather stoic, though still looking rather menacing from atop his pet. You see in actuality, I never laid a hand on this family. Judging from the rate of decay of the bodies, they had been dead for two, maybe three trials now. Its a miracle the wilds had not taken them yet, which allowed me to use them for my necromantic research. Am I a demon for using perfectly good bodies for my experiments? Maybe I am in that regard, but Im nothing compared to the horrors that call these wilds their home. In essence i did you all a favor, killing you. You would have never made to Yaralon in the shape you were in. This was the best form of mercy i could think of. Make you think you were going to die trying to kill a monster of a person, when in fact Im nothing more than your liberator from this mortal coil. Cervantez enlightened, which caused the barely living man to spit at him. Why was it so hard to accept peace, surely they wouldnt have to suffer any longer. The perils of Yaralon would have been far too much for them to bare and this was the better path. Instead of lament over the trials and tribulations of living, let the impartial embrace of death ease your pain. Oh well, it seemed this one couldnt be grateful, causing the necromancer to twist the scythe handle, and with a great swing, he took the man's head off at the shoulders. Body littered the landscape as Cervantez & Njama headed home, before the bigger and more vile beasts came out to play, after all, there was plenty to coax them out now.
