Jedith Skylar

A Shelter Between Earth and Sky

"Through all the arcs he lived in pain, his birthing name he earned the right to claim,
Through triumph and tragedies, too many to name,
This Viden boy his life he gave.”
Isick Hawther, epitaph to Jedith Skylar

It is often said that humanity, indeed all living beings, are Gestalts and should be understood as such. The issue of such thinking, is if the quantity is in fact greater than the mere sum of the components’ of that thing, how can that article be known? The answer, truly, is that it can’t. For even if one fully comprehended all the aspects of all the qualities that comprised any item, whether it be living or inert, if it is greater than merely the interworking of these fundamentals, there would remain always some facet beyond the reach of comprehension. Some unknown feature that could not be contained in the knowledge gleamed from examining each constituent. Perhaps this is in fact so. Perchance this is why the inner workings of organisms, that final hidden long sought after portion, continually elude philosophers and psychologists alike. Conceivably this is why so many behaviors of beast and being alike so baffle us all.

Still, another possibility exists to serve as an illuminating mechanism to this perplexity that currently confounds us. This response is at once equally Feasible to that of the concept of Gestalt and also provides with a means for improving a number of investigatory activities. I am referring to here of nothing so much as conjunction, the feature of both rationality as well as language that binds constituents’ together.

This union in all matters can be exemplified in the everyday example of putting salt into a stew or soup. Once the salt has been conjoined with that dish, neither soup or salt, is quite the same. There is however, no hidden third factor in play here. Merely two distinct products that once adjoined become something else. Here then, in keeping with our case of stew is another type of dish, even though those that consume it might not cook it beforehand, the features of one Mixed-breed, Jedith Skylar.

” When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die the world cries and you rejoice.”
Cherokee saying

Table of contents

"The term half-breed is more of an affront to the one that uses it, than the one it is used on. For the one that uses it demonstrates the lacking of understanding of distinctness. For in so saying our glorious ninny believes that the elements of any being can be neatly divided into portions much like slices of a pie.”

Given the numerous variations in the basic factors that comprise snowflakes, it is small wonder that few are precisely alike. Still there are those fundamental qualities that define all elements of this form of moisture. The same is true of humankind is it not.
Cailín Branka, “Measuring Phenomena,” penned in the season of Vhalar, Arc 664

"There are Essential qualities of my grandson that are more immutable than Malorite, if all elements of his life were to change, even his name, these facits would still remain.”

Jedith Skylar - A Rational Dreamer

To be forged by fate is to be scarred.
Common Northern saying

Sane men run from a burning building, not into one. Not even a madman does it more than once. So what exactly does one call Jedith Skylar, crazier than crazy?”
Alban Hydero, Order of the Adunih physician

Her mother had sent her to give her thanks to the lad that had brought her brother back to them. To provide him with some entertainment while the rest were busy tending to her beloved Hiver, the family’s magnificent officer. She was so proud of her little brother, already a Second Lieutenant, who was to be decorated soon for bravery and gallantry against a superior enemy. She needed to keep those thoughts ever present to make this next task tolerable, she was being forced to engage with a human after all. Humans by and large – and scarred humans even more so – had always filled her with a certain level of revulsion, not just because of their appearance, but more as a result of their utter lack of manners and sophistication. The greater the number of scars, the grander the lack of their erudition, or at least that’s what she had always heard, and experience hadn’t put the error to that belief as of yet. She was an Eídisi, and as a member of that beloved race crafted by the wise Yvithia, she would rise to the challenge of once again dealing with one of these boorish humans – well half-humans – treat him with all the civility that her station and situation demanded. If she also hoped the whole interview would pass quickly, so she could return to far more intellectually stimulating and charming company, well, no one could fault her for that.

He was awaiting her in the second parlor, examining the various paintings on display there, she noticed as she slipped in as quiet as a shadow. Either she was truly as quiet as she believed, or the creature did not see the need to turn at her entrance. In either case she got a good long look at him in the room’s lone lantern and she went to work admiring the specimen that was before her. He had lustrous long locked auburn hair, which was closely cropped, and traveled down his scalp and neck like the main of some predatory cat; the mane not quite hiding the bull’s neck, thick with its bands of muscle. Downward those muscles went forming oxen humps on his back, further highlighting the size and hardness of spine & shoulder bones. Bears shoulders he had and forearms as well, she noted, along with the fact that his tremendous hands were clasped together behind him, there long simian fingers interlocked. She noted too, the odd device wrapped around his left leg, a kind of apparatus to help compensate for the damaged appendage; the leg that when shattered had never healed quite right and left the lad forever walking on his toes. The twin prongs of the brace serving to provide additional, and much needed, support.

Then he turned around, and she observed the many adornments that made him truly repulsive – the claw marks that span the entire left cheek ending near millimeters beneath the left eye; the pair of ear-to-ear wounds that ran parallel with each other along the length of the forehead; the series of smaller pock marks along the right cheek and chin that could be easily identified as the wounds inflicted by heavy iron nails, the kind oft found in building construction. The blotchy burn mark that serves as background to these wounds that runs all the way up to Jedith’s right ear, would indicate that the board that said nails were attached to happened to be on fire when it struck – but before her mouth could open in the slack jawed look of stunned amazement on how a boy his age could accumulate so many mutilations, he bowed low, the faultless half bend acknowledging her as his superior, perfectly correct in the engagement of the decorous act, as if he had been well trained in the mannerly arts.

“It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance Mistress avoír Astucieu”

How something sounding so melodious, so full of rich dramatic suaviloquence, could come out of a face so hideous she would never know. Even without the scars, Jedith Skylar had a face where all excess flesh seemed to have been boiled away, leaving taut flesh over profuse musculature and dense bones. His nose was too broad and flat, his mouth too non-existent for any woman to call him handsome, and yet there were those lantern like eyes. Still she wasn’t even certain that his own mother could love that face. What she was certain of, was that Jedith Skylar was an interesting paradox.

“This life's dim windows of the soul
Distorts the heavens from pole to pole
And leads you to believe a lie
When you see with, not through, the eye.”
William Blake

Physical Attributes

Height
one point fifty five meters (five feet, and ten inches)
Weight
79.65 KG, or 177 pounds
Frame
Mesomorph
Skull Structure
Asymmetrically oval, with a blocky squarish chin, somewhat pronounced cheekbones, and a high rounded forehead
Hair
Thick straight shiny Auburn locks with copper highlights, most noticeable near the temples
Eyes
Somewhat sunken, with the left being somewhat larger than the right, with the brilliant lambent amber of the orbs seeming nothing like so much as the light of an overactive brain spilling forth underneath the shadows cast by bushy brows. An observer will readily note the absence of pupil and white, with the degree to which the 'glowing' quality is present seems to be somewhat affected by Jed's mood
Skin Hue
Navy Blue
Baring
While Jedith can shift his gate and posture depending on circumstances, his natural comportment is common to that of officers – a determined stride with a definite purpose, straight backed, with a step heel to toe on his good leg, and straight toed on his bad one that is rather quiet mostly. His muscles are noticeably loose and ready to snap in any direction that Jed requires of them, ensuring that there is little rigidity to his actions and that his movements have a regular smoothness, which some have found somewhat attractive.
Voice
His voice was deep, dramatic, rich, smooth. It held a natural melliloquent, which one associates with a trained and practiced singer, with each syllable skillfully uttered. Indeed, the utterances rolled out of his mouth with a tolutiloquence that one expects of a trained and experienced orator, and not from a middle born who had spent part of his life shoveling coal.
Dress
Jedith’s clothing selections can be divided into two general types: those that serve as to aid in camouflage while in the field; or city clothes, which are typically in dull earth tone colors or grays.
First Impressions & Common Responses
Given the prevalence of so many easily visible scars, one should not be surprised if one finds their gaze, or their attention, naturally drawn to them. Stairs are a common occurrence whenever Jed is about and he has become somewhat used to their happening. Naturally, such scars would be highly likely to result in first impressions being somewhat fixated on such easily discernable features. This is not to be meant is an absolute in regards to roleplay with Jedith, but an aid only, many folks would find Jedith’s appearance somewhat revolting to look at, and such responses would be appropriate for your character on first meeting.

Journey of the Sorcerer of Science

“There is nothing more useful in understanding the likelihood of any action a being might engage in the future, than having a grasp on its personality.”
Adenous Kynstene, “A survey of the Psyche, penned 12th of Ashan in the Arc 512

Sure, you might not like what Jed had to say, but you knew that he told you what he thought. You could count on him to be honest, even when it might not be politic to do so.
Haghen Kaster, Viden Harbor Master.

Introversion

By natural inclination Jedith prefers personal reflection and quiet solitude over society. One Reflects More When Traveling alone, is a maxim Jedith lives by, as he gives his confidences, both personal and professional too few. Part of this is due to his own reserve and part is the consequence of the challenge for him to find like-minded individuals who are able to keep up with his relentless intellectualism and chess-like maneuvering. Jed rather spends his trials in the designing and exacuting plans within his domain of interests rather than share opinions on “uninteresting” distractions like gossip. This is further compounded by his natural thirst for knowledge and quest for constant self-improvement, means that Jed places numerous restrictions on his social time.
One learns from books only that certain things can be done. Actual learning requires that you do those things, is also a Jedith adage, and thus, those social activities that mesh with Jed’s goals – engagements that are perceived as important – will be the ones that Jedith will attend, and one can be certain that he will strive with his all to meet all the societal requirements of such engagements.

Intuitive

Jed is an ‘idea’ person at heart, and this shows to anyone that spends any length of time with him. Anything is possible; everything is negotiable – unless reason, or testing says otherwise. Jedith’s mind never seems to stop, even in sleep, ever perceiving pattern-forms and using logic, a constently growing mountain of knowledge and data , to operationalize. Others may see what is and wonder why; Jedith Skylar see’s what might be and says ‘maybe, lets test it, let’s find out’. His greatest joys come from developing unique solutions to complex problems. While he doesn’t believe all problems are directly solveable, many can be lessoned or removed through the proper solution. Those that are the consequence of irrationality, outdated social norms, or the product of uninformed opinion, he doesn’t bother with.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thinking

Thinking for Jedith serves two distinct purposes, which serves as a major feature of all activities both internal and external: the first is that mental activity is a workhorse for intuitive processes; and the second as a sort of litmus test – using hard and soft logic, as well as all available data – to ascertain the validity of any idea put before him. Thinking, both as a feature of personality and as an activity , for jed serves as a means for testing ideas, as they come to light, determines there cogency, and then tends, protects, affirms and directs intuition's offspring, fully equipping them for fulfilling and useful lives. In this way Jedith is both a dreamer, and probably one of the most rational beings you will ever meet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Feeling

to those that do not know Jedith particularly well, his lack of expressiveness when it comes to his own feelings has caused many to conclude that he doesn’t really have any. That he is nothing more than a cold-blooded and insensitive genius living by the mantra that emotions are for the weak. Nothing could be further from the truth, but Jedith’s natural stoicism, his considerable store of patients, his private nature, and belief that one doesn’t display extreme emotion in public have all lead to this widely held opinion. The fact is that Jedith does feel, and deeply, it only requires a perceptive individual, in public at least, to notice it most of the time.

Still even those closest to Jedith know that when it comes to his personal mental state, his tendency to repress his feelings has led to a significant weakness in the social arena. Those few close friends know, better than anyone, the long hard road Jed will have to travel before he is truly comfortable in this domain.

At present, he has learned how to channel passions alongside his logic to help him achieve his goals. He has described his current emotional knowledge as being double rooted in his natural inquisitiveness. Other’s emotions are the “canaries in his coal mine,” as Jed has been known to say. Others responses, whether joyful or distraught, are internally examined by Jed, in order to better identify them. In this way, Jed doesn’t use others reactions, nor even his own internal states, in addressing a decision, but rather an indication that a decision needs to be addressed. Jedith does not believe that shifts in mood are themselves bad, or that a logical being shouldn’t have them, quite the contrary, he just knows that individuals can misidentify an emotion, and that he is more apt to do so. He further knows that some important events cannot be entirely resolved by rationality alone, and so he strives to improve his understanding in this complex domain, in order to not only better himself, but also achieve the goals he considers important.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Planning

One thing is sure, Jedith Skylar is a planner. Everything he does, is part of a plan, or a backup plan, or a backup to a backup plan. Indeed, the development of several tertiary models of action might cause others to perceive him as one that often operates spontaneously, but nothing could be further from the truth. Jed simply knows that initial plans often require modification and possible points where matters might go sideways, responses and contingencies are developed. He is a rigid follower of a personal code of honor, which he has so far not deviated from, and is unlikely to do so.

Jedith Skylar - A Rational Dreamer

It is much easier to engage in that which is good, when one has a model to go by, when there is some belief in reward, in a being whose actions you wish to please or placate. It is much more difficult to engage in the good when one doesn’t have this matters as reinforce or guide, but ah the sweeter when one encounters one that follows that which is right based on reason alone.”
Lyonette Bevalion, What is truly good, penned 26th of Ashan arc 433.

All the conversations with family and friends, all the rumors and counter gossips I have heard did not prepare me one iota for the actual encounter with Jedith Skylar.
Adyana Adaline letter to her younger sister Jestene

I‘ll tell it to you straight, without fuss or lollygagging, and you can count on whatI’ve got to be saying, as I was there, and I’ve known the lad for five arcs before. Known him and his Old Man, and never there was a finer man that worked the shipyards of Viden, than Jeeraard Skylar, Imortals watch over his soul, but we aren’t here to talk of that. No, you want to know what happened to the Waverunner, and why we showed up here in a pair of long boats instead of a proper ship. All right, I’ll be telling you, without polish, or axes to be grinding, like I said — I’ll tell it to you straight.

What’s that? Jeeraard wasn’t liked by his family you say?

Well, yes, that’s true. He married a woman they didn’t be liking, but don’t be getting ideas about Odette Adaline. She was one of the finest of the blue skins. Folks can say she never showed proper emotions all they like, but they not be paying attention. I did, and I saw, saw it plenty. When Jed went back into the last flat on the Unwanted Strip, back when somebody set the place alight trying to kill those Imortal forsaken shadowfolk, she screamed his name. I heard it. Heard it clearly.

Imortals. He was his father’s son that trial all right. Went back in five times to help get folks out. That’s why his left leg isn’t right, and why he has the scars. The blooming place came down around him the fifth time, but he managed to drag his broken frame out two trials later, takes a real Northerner to do something like that.

I’m going sideways, so let’s get back to it.

Anyhow, Skylar’s didn’t like Adaline,, and Adaline didn’t like Skylar, at least those of the Skylar left in Viden, as most are elsewhere. So my point being, the trio weren't exactly poor, but the three of them were used to working hard for what they had. Odette was clever, and Jeeraard was skilled with his hands, and some things, some things the lad Jedith dreamed up, but getting the what’s, what out of Jed’s head, is harder than getting coins back from a tax collector. Still, Jeeraard’s reputation proceeded him, and he ended up landing a dockmaster’s job, that’s a work boss to you non-shipwright’s, in Egilrun, so up they went, and me too, because I got offered a job by Jeeraard.

This leads me to the what went wrong.

Oh, something went wrong, awful dung heeps wrong, and it all involved something Odette was carrying that some Naerikk wanted. I don’t know what it was, and I don’t give a mules rump why they wanted it, they were blooming Naerikk. What was worse they had something that rended the vale to the land of dreams, or at least that’s what I think happened, and I hope I never see anything like that again.

Oh, we retook the ship, just in time to abanden it. Odette and Jeeraard and the captain staid aboard, and as near as can be told, succeeded in undoing whatever the Naerikk did: from the other stinking side, trapping themselves there. As for us, we managed to make it here, through storm and Mer attack, and other things besides, and Jed did more than anyone else on those long boats in getting here, even if he’ll never admit to it. I know, because I was there.

"The soul that sees beauty may sometimes walk alone."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The whole story is complicated
Jedith doesn’t know what exactly is in the book that he was given, beyond the alchemical recipes and equations he and his mother Odette worked on, because it is in a language he doesn’t know. He just knows he needs to keep it hidden. He knows that he cannot trust anyone about its contents. He knows that some terrible people want it, and they will kill him to have it. Jedith knows that this is only the beginning of his problems. He knows he needs to continue to pass himself off as a strapping lad of thirteen or fourteen, instead of his actual age — too many things depend on him seeming to be a lad entering soon into manhood, instead of a scared boy. And he is a very scared boy, but he does a marvelous job not showing it

"I shall run along the horizon line of belief fully knowing that it shall harm me,
Wholly aware that I shall bleed,
May my blood nourish humankind,
May my blood strengthen humankind,
May my blood improve humankind.

I shall run alone if need be,
I shall run being mocked if need be,
I shall runn forsaking riches, loved ones, or fame,
I shall run.”

importent to moderators, please read
While Ghool was the original person to review this, I feel it is important to mention said individual now, but as you can probably see from the history section, Anther’s Ettyne, as well as Viden Commissariat have been removed from Jedith’s history. I’ve not finished these yet, Whisper has not seen them, approved them, and it might be a while before this happens. For this and other reasons — a different launching point for the argumentation behind Jedith and with Jedith prompting this — I am taking a less described approach to Jedith at this point, whith more comeing out later. Still, and this of the upmost importance, I remain highly flexable about how I write Jedith, previous chat discussions aside, and if there remains issues needed to be addressed, then I shall happily do so.

Hello Jedith,

You have a very detailed character sheet here, and Jedith seems already a very well fleshed out personality for a ten year old character.

Thanks for taking the time to work out those details that were previously identified by Ghoul.

There's but two things that need to be addressed for your CS to pass review at this point, all formatting issues aside.

Your the costs detailed in your financial register are incorrect. The calculated Wealth Points or WP left over are also incorrect.

As I'm presuming you mean to start Jedith with the starting package of a city-dweller, after spending 54 wp, you would have 12 wp left over, as those starting at the maximum tier which is Tier 5 for City Dwellers, you would start with 66 wp.

Also, you don't have an inventory section in your cs that I can find.

As you applied quite a long time ago, it might be worth checking the Wealth System update, to familiarize yourself with those systems: wiki/index.php?title=Category:The_Wealth_System

Once you've sorted the two issues I've identified, please re-submit your CS for approval, and someone will look over your CS again. If it passes review, they will remove this intervention and you will be ready for play.

Thank you.
