Pepper stood under a truly huge weeping willow. Judging by the light, it was early afternoon. She could hear the sound of water flowing over stones somewhere close by, there was a slight nip, and the smell of growing things was strong in the air.

Pepper took a careful look at the tree, considering whether it was a good one for climbing. It passed inspection, and she was soon perched comfortably 15 feet up, bare feet securely braced, her knapsack hanging from a handy branch nearby. Pepper took out her sketch pad, thinking vaguely about what a great spot this tree made. She must remember the way here..

Where am I though? This is the woods for sure.. she paused in confusion. Everything suddenly seemed a bit unfamiliar. Was she even in the woods? Where else would this be then?

Confused are you? The voice was warm and only a little amused. Pepper looked around for the girl who'd spoken, but couldn't see anyone. Looking for me? The voice was now directly overhead. Pepper craned her head up to see a handful of flames (or was it a bird made of flames?), hanging a few feet above her head. Pepper should have ducked in reflex, but the only feeling in her was one of welcome. The flames drew closer and resolved into a tiny humanoid figure, barely five inches high. She had long hair spilling down her back, and two beautiful wings. The wings were easily twice her height, and she was completely wrapped in ethereal, wispy flames of orange, red and yellow.

I'm Miret, the fairy sat down cross-legged on a small branch at Pepper's eye level, and I'm your guardian.

Pepper didn't know she was dreaming. She didn't know this was the third time she had had a variation of this conversation with Miret, the fairy she had been granted from Jesine a few trials back. She just had the unexplained feeling of welcome as the remnant of those previous meetings.

Aren't you too small to be a guardian? Pepper asked.. Oh... maybe you can burn things...

Miret smiled politely, having fielded a variation of this a number of times now. No... I mostly protect you like a good teacher does... Miret had perfected the approach that seemed to work best with Pepper. Miret understood that the child had gone through some nasty dreams due to a boy's recent death, and maybe that's why her mind wasn't willing to jump into lucidity straight away. There was also the body's tiredness from a bad fever to consider. So she'd decided that repeating the key motifs in dreams till Pepper naturally became aware of the real world was going to be key.. Maybe tonight would be the day..

I tell you what's dangerous, and a bit of what's possible.. Miret straightened and began to slowly float down, Come, walk with me..

As she agreed in thought, Pepper found herself standing at the foot of the tree, not clear how she'd got there, and not bothered by the gap. Memory was largely absent, but also absent was any need to make logical sense of things.

Miret led Pepper out from under the tree's canopy and very casually mentioned, I hear you met Dan recently..

The forest around them changed from the spring of Ashan to the cold of Zi'da within a few steps, yet Pepper didn't notice. Yes.. some doubt had leached into her voice and a faint weight was making itself felt in her heart, I did.. He wasn't happy with me though..

It was clear Pepper didn't have any control over her dreamscapes yet, she wasn't even aware of the change most of the time, but it'll come in time. out aloud, Miret replied That's all right, friends do fight occasionally.. I'm sure he doesn't bear you any ill will. she dared to send the merest trickle of calm and acceptance through their bond.

Pepper nodded, fragments of her earlier dreams slotting in to make a facsimile of a memory.. You know someone else said something about Dan.. I met this lady.. Pepper strained to remember the details.. Almost subconsciously her fingers went to the nape of her head, perhaps remembering being marked.

This was encouraging, this was progress, Miret was well satisfied with the work today.. She had the idea that if Pepper recalled Jesine in dreaming, she might remember the rest of it, and attain lucidity. She could properly introduce herself then. Miret was preparing to stop interfering for the rest of the night and let Pepper get some real sleep and rest when Pepper's voice stopped her.

She said she was a guardian too.. Motes of light swirled around an unaware Pepper, her dreamscape's representation of her growing awareness. And.. I said I'd like to protect.. something too.. Pepper concentrated more and more and then with a strange shiver, the whole dreamscape seemed to become more vivid, more present. The wind howled wildly, and a flurry of snow obscured everything for a timeless moment.

Pepper turned to Miret, her eyes were the slightest bit strained, but with full knowledge of who she was and what had happened. She was Jesine, Dan is dead, and I'm marked.

Miret nodded, her heart filled with pride at her charge's breakthrough. I'm Miret, I'll always be there with you to guide you on this new path. I'm your guardian by Jesine's charge, but I'll be your friend if you'll let me be one..

Pepper stared at Miret for long trills, not saying anything, but her feelings were wide open in this one instant and Miret could easily hear the grief which was finally seeing the light of the day.

She moved to Pepper's shoulder and lightly touched her hair, It's okay, it's okay to let go..

Pepper crumpled to the ground and sobbed as she hadn't been able to in the waking world.

It was Pepper's bedroom, perhaps the most familiar and comforting place her mind could conjure. Pepper sat at the table and quietly sketched. Miret sat on the table and swung her legs, thinking. Pepper hadn't yet noticed her this time, should she introduce herself again?

That last dream had gone well in that Pepper had gotten lucid towards the end of it. She'd also managed to let out some of the grief and guilt she'd accumulated over the last ten trials or so.. The stormy crying in the dream had naturally wakened her and she'd had a good cry. Exhaustion had pulled her under again and after a few breaks of true rest, she was back to dreaming in fits and starts.

Miret felt torn between staying hidden and letting Pepper have some peace and showing up in front of her and risking another emotionally intense episode. After further thought she decided Pepper's feelings about Dan's death were like a festering wound, which had just been lanced. All of it needed to come out lest it turn to poison. Talking to family about it would be a part of the healing process, but dreams could be another way to let healing begin. Dreamscapes were especially well suited to exploring the self and the workings of the mind and the heart. Pepper might find the first steps to reliable lucidity painful and difficult, but Miret decided that was where her duty and Pepper's final well being lay. She'd let Pepper set the tone of their interaction.

Accordingly she moved to sit on one of the shelves that lay just within Pepper's field of sight. After a pause of a few trills, she spoke, What are you drawing?

A tree-house, came the prompt reply. Pepper glanced at Miret, gave the tiniest of smiles, and went back to sketching. Come, see.

Miret flew to Pepper's shoulder and peered at the sketchbook. A very well drawn tree in charcoal took up most of the page, and in the central gap, Pepper had begun to lightly draw some straight lines. You draw very well.. Miret continued looking at the sketch.

Pepper hummed in assent. It's easy today. Almost like the charcoal knows my mind.. The knowledge that she was dreaming was perhaps just a thin layer away, she was somewhat aware of her expected level of skills in drawing, but not aware enough to question the sudden gain in skill. She was aware enough to know Miret was someone known and somewhat expected, yet not aware enough to question how. Random not-quite thoughts flitted through her mind as her fingers busied themselves with the sketch, and as it was almost finished, Pepper spoke, Tell me about your home..

I don't rightly have one.. yet.. Miret returned after a few trills of silence. Can I stay with you?

Pepper stilled for a long moment. For how long?

Miret flew to sit near the now forgotten sketch. For as long as you'd have me. I've no other family, no friends.

Pepper blinked, she didn't know why but she had tears in her eyes. You won't go away?

Never. Miret did not waste time thinking about the rare cases a fairy was known to die.

Pepper sniffed and swallowed. Giving a watery smile, she nodded at Miret, I'm Pepper. What's your name?

Miret.. I'm Miret.
